Tipperary book spot in Munster final after narrow win over Limerick

Munster MHC: Limerick 0-12 Tipperary 0-13

Report by John Keogh for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary booked their spot in the Munster MHC Final following a 0-13 to 0-12 victory over Limerick at Mick Neville Park, Rathkeale.

James Woodlock’s youngsters were pushed all the way by a gallant Limerick side that finished their campaign without a point to their name.

Moneygall youngster Eoghan Doughan’s haul of six points proved crucial to Tipperary’s victory and they now play Clare in the provincial decider.

Limerick were playing for pride and restored that following a tough campaign that finished with four losses for Shane Dowling’s charges.

Tipperary made a sensational start to the contest by registering the first five points of the half but Limerick fought back to cut that gap to two at the break.

The teams were level twice heading down the stretch but two scores from play by Cathal Minogue eased Tipperary nerves late on.

Patrick Kearney’s seventh of the contest gave Limerick hope in added time but Tipperary held on for the victory.

It took just 11 seconds for Tipperary to register the opening score with Euan Murray landing a fine point from play.

Doughan then doubled the advantage with a free and then he added a sumptuous effort from play to stretch the lead to three.

The Tipperary centre forward sent over his third of the game to emphasise Tipperary’s control and then Darragh O’Hora made it 0-5 to 0-0 with eight minutes on the clock after excellent work from Minogue.

Limerick eventually settled into the contest with the lively Kearney bisecting the posts with a shot from play.

The same man got Limerick’s second score moments later but strikes from Doughan and O’Hara restored Tipperary’s five point advantage at the quarter hour mark.

Limerick hit five wides in that time but a Danny Sheehan score and a Kearney free brought the gap back to three in the run up to half time.

Minogue got on the board with a well-taken score that began with a superb sideline cut from the impressive Jake Donelan-Houlihan.

Limerick, however, continued to stick to their task with two frees from Kearney seeing the score at 0-8 to 0-6 in Tipperary’s favour at half time.

The home side needed a quick start to the second half and got it when midfielders Eoghan Maher and Patrick Cagney combined from the throw in to see the latter make it a one-point game.

Murray soon had Tipperary two to the good once more with a shot from distance but two long range frees from Jack Cosgrave levelled the contest for the first time with eight minutes of the second half played.

Doughan’s fifth and sixth of the game saw Tipperary go two clear but Limerick kept in the game with a fierce work ethic.

A snapshot from Malachy McKenna and a free from Kearney levelled the contest for a second time and it was all to play for with 10 minutes left to play.

Tipperary needed something to lift them and it was Minogue that was able to rise to that call in the final stages.

He landed a superb score to put Tipperary back in the ascendancy and then made it a two-point lead with another on 58 minutes.

Kearney’s free deep into added time did give Limerick hope of a draw but they ran out of rope and fell to a fourth Munster loss in 2024.
