2024 Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship – Clare 2-22 Cork 0-19
Clare defeated Cork by 2-22 to 0-19 in Round 5 of the Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship on Thursday May 9th at Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

A resounding nine-point victory for Clare in the Electric Ireland Munster MHC in SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh on Thursday night. As a result, the All-Ireland champions remain on course for back-to-back provincial titles, and based on the superior skill and composure they showed in the second-half of this round 5 contest, you wouldn’t bet against them when they take on Tipperary in the final on Monday May 20.
They topped the group on full points. Tipperary were second.
With Cork and Clare all square at the break, 1-9 to 0-12, the Banner outscored Cork 1-13 to seven points in a devastating second period.
Fresh from his hat-trick against Tipperary last week, electric corner-forward Liam Murphy raised both green flags for his team.
All is not lost however for Cork, they will play in the All-Ireland preliminary quarter-final after finishing in third place (Waterford also qualify after finishing in fourth).
Once again, Mark O’Brien was top-man for the home side accruing 11 points.
Clare came to Cork unbeaten, and they had conceded no goals in their three games to date. They managed to preserve that stat. Their ability to do so was due in no small way to the cool head of goalkeeper Matthew Crotty. He denied the Rebels time and time again.
Their manager Brian O’Connell was forced into one very late change with corner-forward Conor Ralph crying off in the warm-up due to injury, and he was replaced by Jerry O’Connor.
There was a blistering start to proceedings with three points in the first minute, two of these from Clare’s Paul Rodgers and Jerry O’Connor.
Cork soon found their radar hitting four without reply, Mark O’Brien’s accuracy from placed balls telling, including one monster free from inside his own half-back line.
There was a goal shot from Luke Murphy as well, but Clare were relieved to see it go out for a ’65, which O’Brien converted, 0-5 to 0-3, after a mere eight minutes.
The visitors got back on track when first Harry Doherty landed a free, and this was followed by a goal from Murphy who was in the right spot to fire home after goalkeeper Josh Goulding saved from Rodgers in the 13th minute.
Murphy added a point to leave Clare two up after quarter of an hour.
Michael Brosnan went near goaling for Cork, again O’Brien rifled over the resultant ’65.
The contest continued at high tempo, the sides trading points as Clare managed to keep their noses in front with five minutes to go to half-time, 1-7 to 0-8.
An outstanding point from Luke Murphy from over his shoulder and a fifth placed ball from O’Brien levelled the game.
Tied twice more, they couldn’t be separated after a lively opening 30 minutes, 0-12 to 1-9.
Cork restarted on the goal hunt but Crotty was equal to the task. A brace from Patrick Finneran regained control for Clare. By the 40th minute, there was a clear goal between the sides, 1-13 to 0-13.
By the 50th minute, that same difference remained, 1-17 to 0-17. Cork were getting very little scope, mainly due to the tenacity of the Clare rearguard.
With the game still in the balance though, Murphy put paid to any hopes of John Meyler’s outfit getting back in contention. He had work to do, but he found his way towards the posts and his finish was superb in the 53rd minute.
In the remaining seven minutes plus stoppage, Clare out-hurled Cork five points to two.
Among the players to raise white flags in those closing stages were subs Ryan Hayes and Darragh Ball.
And if they can get Ralph fit for the final, it all augurs well for the future.
