Munster Minor Football Championship Phase 1 Round 3
Tipperary 2-10 Clare 1-08
Report by Eoin Brennan for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Tipperary will take a perfect record into their Daryl Darcy Final rematch after lowering hosts Clare in their dress rehearsal in Páirc Naomh Mhuire in Quilty.
Having both qualifed for the knock-out stages of the Munster Minor Football Championship with a game to spare seven days earlier, the real prize comes in a fortnight’s time when the sides face-off for provincial B honours before taking on perennial superpowers Cork and Kerry in the last four.
The visitors were by far the sharper and more efficient side for the opening three-quarters of the tie, something that will partucularly please joint-managers Michael Donnellan and Shane Hennessy having made nine changes from the team that overcame Waterford last time out.
The Banner meanwhile only made four alterations but one would be forgiven for thinking it was the other way around as Tipperary dictated matters from the outset despite facing into a stiff breeze.
Goals at the end of the first two quarters effectively steered Tipperary to victory as their impressive midfield unit of Dylan Cotter and Dayle Hogan cut through the home defence repeatedly.
Cotter teed up Patrick McDonagh for the first in the 13th minute while a quick free from Ned O’Meara only minutes from half-time was ruthelssly finished by Hogan to the right corner of the net as a buoyant Tipperary took a 2-4 to 0-4 advantage into the break.
In contrast, a Conor Burke goal chance at the start of both halves were repelled by goalkeeper Mark Conroy, first diving full length to tip away a tenth minute effort while the second was a more straight-forward block to deny the Kilmurry Ibrickane clubman another goal on his home patch in the opening minute of the new half.
Burke did take his tally to four points with a 32nd minute free but Tipperary’s response was decisive as main protagonists Dayle Hogan (2), Dylan Cotter, Ned O’Meara and Patrick McDonagh tacked on the next four scores to put the result beyond doubt at 2-9 to 0-5 entering the final ten minutes.
Clare emptied their bench to good effect, with replacements Caleb Walsh and Darragh Townsend insturmental in a welcome goal for debutante Kevin Hanley in the 53rd minute.
However, in spite of adding three of the last four points, all from the foot of substitute Liam Clune, it only lessened the final damage for Dermot Coughlan’s side who were made to suffer their first reverse of the campaign.
The real championship only commences in two week’s time however.
