Electric Ireland All-Ireland MHC quarter-final: Impressive Clare advance
Clare 2-16 Wexford 0-13
Report By Ronan Fagan at FBD Semple Stadium for GAA.ie
Defending All-Ireland Minor hurling champions Clare overcame Wexford in the closing quarter of Monday afternoon’s quarter-final at FBD Semple Stadium to surge back into the last-four.
Defeated Leinster semi-finalists Wexford, having bowled over Cork a week earlier, appeared to be posing a significant threat after the talismanic Seán O’Brien shaved the gap from 1-8 to 0-6 after 35 minutes to 1-8 to 0-10 seven minutes later.
But after Wexford then squandered a goaling chance, relieved Clare emerged from their temporary slumber to produce a decisive eight points without reply between the 46th and 54th minutes.
And that set Brian O’Connell’s charges on course for a penultimate round showdown against Leinster champions Kilkenny, while Galway and Tipperary cross paths on the other side.
Beaten Munster finalists Clare settled neatly as they led 0-3 to no-score inside nine minutes. Harry Doherty drew first-blood after thirty seconds, before Mathew Corbett and Doherty obliged from frees and defender Dara Kennedy also chipped in.
Clare wasted opportunities to steal ahead as they added three quick wides while Wexford eventually crafted settling scores through Seán O’Brien (free) and Colin Carley to be within 0-4 to 0-2 after 20 minutes.
While another Corbett free increased the gap to three, Wexford struck back with a brace of frees from sharpshooter O’Brien to shave the gap to 0-5 to 0-4 after 27 minutes.
However, the Clare attack was showing glimpses of their potential, and they eventually broke through for a major blow on 27 minutes.
Tadhg Lohan hared in and was blocked before having the presence of mind to off-load to full-forward Paul Rodgers to flash home for a double-scores lead (1-5 to 0-4).
Wexford displayed good composure nevertheless as a brace of O’Brien frees sandwiched Harry Doherty’s third for Clare to have the purple and gold within 1-6 to 0-6 at the break.
And while Clare resumed with points from Doherty (free) and wing-back Kennedy’s second, Wexford gained the ascendancy for a spell.
Indeed, a quartet of points from O’Brien (three frees) saw Michael Jacob’s crew close within 1-8 to 0-10 just before Colin Carley was unfortunate to boot a goaling chance wide.
And things quickly unravelled for Wexford from that moment as Clare produced a decisive surge with eight unanswered points.
Graham Ball, Doherty (three), subs Ryan Hayes and Jerry O’Connor (two frees) and Liam Murphy swelled the gap to 1-16 to 0-10 after 54 minutes.
Wexford fought gallantly – midfielder Jack Nolan drawing a goal save – but Liam Murphy sealed Clare’s passage back to the All-Ireland semi-finals when gathering a long clearance and cutting in from the right to plant an angled finish to the net in added-time.
