Kerry blow away Roscommon with strong first half in All-Ireland minor football quarter-final

KERRY 3-18 ROSCOMMON 2-3

Report by John O’Dowd for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Playing a brand of stunningly intelligent and efficient football against the wind, Kerry ripped the heart out of the Roscommon challenge with an eviscerating first half display in this All-Ireland MFC quarter-final rout at Cusack Park in Ennis.

Although the Connacht runners-up opened the scoring in the first minute, through a pointed free from Dean Casey, they would, amazingly, with the elements in their favour, fail to register another score before the half-time whistle.

Kerry, with wing-back Seán Ó Cuinn lighting the fuse with two excellent white flags by the fifth minute, completely took control of all sectors of the pitch, especially through the high-fielding Killian Dennehy at midfield. As a result, a blisteringly-sharp attack ran riot before the break.

The precociously-talented Gearoid White, man-of-the-match in the Munster final, soon got into his stride with three of the next four scores, and with wing-back Gavin O’Keeffe adding another, the Kingdom were five up at the end of the first quarter (0-6 to 0-1).

In the second quarter, there was no respite for Roscommon, with Kerry full-forward Ronan Carroll now coming into his own. Four points on the trot from the Austin Stacks club-man had the margin out to nine, and it was already damage limitation for the losers.

With their aspirations of reaching the last four already shot to pieces, the last thing the Connacht side needed before half-time was a Kerry goal, but that’s exactly what happened in the 29th minute when Joey McCarthy’s shot for a point was misjudged by Patrick Gaynor and the ball landed in the net.

That fortuitous green flag was the proverbial icing on the cake for Wayne Quillinan’s charges, whose shooting accuracy was of such a high standard that they had ten points from their first ten attempts at the posts. Leading by 13 points at the break, 1-11 to 0-1, the contest was done and dusted.

The winners, understandably, took the collective foot off the accelerator on the resumption, with their huge cushion giving management the opportunity to replace key figures like captain Ben Murphy and White. An early second half black card for Eoin Collins added further to Rossies’ tale of woe.

The highlight of the second half was the impact of Kingdom sub, Ryan O’Driscoll, who struck for a brace of goals, both set up by fellow replacement Cian MacGearailt.

In the space of an action-packed four minutes, Roscommon also struck for two green flags, courtesy of Keelan Kelly and Collins.
