Mayo outclass Cork to book All-Ireland minor football semi-final spot
Mayo 3-15 Cork 0-6
Report by Rob Murphy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Connacht champions Mayo booked their place in an All Ireland semi final, with a blistering display against Cork in Cusack Park, Ennis on Saturday afternoon.
An early goal, a suffocating press on Cork kick-outs and some sharp shooting set the tone for the westerners as the Rebels just couldn’t find the answers and suffered a second successive heavy defeat in the championship to end their summer in disappointment.
Cork needed a good start in this game to settle their confidence, but it was Mayo who burst out of the blocks with a series of attacks.
From a loose shot that dropped short, Mayo got an early goal as Dylan Flynn rose high above two Cork defenders and broke the ball down to Oisín Dean on the penalty spot. With only the Cork goalkeeper O’Flaherty to beat, the Crossmolina forward finished on the half volley and Mayo were up and running.
Over the next ten minutes, Cork just couldn’t get enough clean possession from kick out as Mayo were hoovering up breaks and turning over possession with determination and the scores followed.
McDonald with a free, Dean from play and then Flynn from a mark. Three young Crossmolina stars, all over the scoresheet as Cork were left with a mountain to climb.
Cork manager Michael O’Sullivan made an immediate change ten minutes in with dual minor Liam Kelleher introduced for Cian Cooney but Mayo continued to dominate with McDonald scoring two from play and one from a free. David Hurley added a further score with only Oisín Harrington managing a response for Cork.
As half time approached, Cork offered some hope with points from Sean Whelton and Danny Miskella, but the Mayo side coached by David Heaney and Tom Reilly were not for letting up.
Another hard won turnover, set up goal number two with Lahardane half back Mark Sheerin pouncing on the loose ball, Kobe McDonald helping it into the path of Andrew Quinn and the Mayo Gael’s forward quickly released Flynn in on goal.
Cork goalkeeper James O’Flaherty fouled the Mayo forward and was immediately black carded. McDonald then stepped up and dispatched the penalty into the corner, leaving temporary keeper Sean Whelton with no chance. Mayo led 2-8 to 0-3 at half time and the game was beyond the Rebels.
After the break, Mayo’s spread of scorers increased with full back and captain Tom Hession scoring first before Sheerin crowned a fine display with two scores from play off both the left and right foot.
McDonald had another point before Cork scored twice on the bounce with Dylan O’Neill and Whelton scoring but it was Mayo who crowned the win with 1-2 in the closing stages, Oisín Dean getting the goal.
Awaiting Mayo in the semi final are Armagh. Beaten by five in the Ulster final by a strong Derry team only to bounce back on Saturday with a fine victory over Leinster champions Longford.
They will be looking to make it to their first final since 2009. On that occasion, they beat the Connacht champions Mayo for their second All Ireland title and first since 1994.
They haven’t been back in a final since and will provide stiff opposition to the Connacht champions in two weeks’ time.
