Limerick hang on as Waterford fightback falls short in Munster U20 football championship
Limerick 2-7 Waterford 2-6
Report by Tom Clancy for the Irish Examiner newspaper
A late implosion from Limerick almost saw them relinquish the win in the Munster U20 football championship, however, in the end, the clock saved them as Waterford’s late flurry proved fruitless.
Overall, Limerick were the stronger side, enjoyed more territory and possession but Gavin Whelan’s side failed to throw in the towel in their search of a win at the grade. The win has the Treaty well placed ahead of the final game at home to Clare, while Waterford are guaranteed a spot in the B final (3rd v 4th), ahead of their game with Tipperary.
There was plenty of players who showed well from both sides, but almost all in spurts. Limerick dominated for 25 minutes, Waterford were courageous against the wind but left it too late to make their move.
Early scores from targetman Ronan Quirke and midfielder Emmet Rigter set the home side on their way. They were dominant at midfield as Rigter and Darragh Murray used their size and athleticism to good quality.
Goals from Senan O’Brien and Diarmuid Hynes had Limerick dreaming of a routine win – the second of those pulling them 2-4 to 0-2 ahead against a strong wing in Ballyagran. There was three points from Rory Fennell in the opening half, his last leaving it 2-4 to 0-4 at half-time.

The third quarter was score-shy, but Waterford wasted the first of two penalties. Three minutes after the restart, Sam Pender was felled. He took the kick himself, but his effort cannoned back off the inside of the post and away to safety. There was just three scores in this period, Limerick through Conall Ó Duinn and Murray, either side of a Pender free.
With the game looking like winding down to a routine win for Shane Kelly’s side, Waterford found something. A blackcard as Jason Hassett pulled down Darragh Murphy also gave the Déise a penalty. This was dispatched by Mikey O’Brien.
In the five additional minutes, a Rigter point – which typified his display – gave Limerick a five-point lead. However, John Bruton flashed an effort over in a goalmouth scramble, before Michael O’Sullivan stabbed home their second goal with the last act.
While only a moral victory for Waterford, they certainly made Limerick sweat down the home stretch. Waterford’s struggles at all codes in the Munster Championship hasn’t ended just yet, but they’ll be positive ahead of a final outing Phase One outing against the Premier. Limerick will need improvement to cement a top two spot.
