Dominant Cork destroy Clare to book U20 Munster final date
Munster U20FC: Cork 5-18 Clare 0-13
Report by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Nothing to see here. And nobody to see it.
No more than 150 parents and friends occupied the North Stand for this Munster U20 football championship final round fixture. What they were served was a most one-sided offering, the outcome of which was known 11 minutes in.
Cork came into the game knowing they needed only to do nothing silly. Clare came needing a miracle.
Cork held up their end of the bargain and booked a Munster final ticket. Mind you, there was precious little else for them from this fixture. Where Kerry got 45 minutes of a challenge from Tipperary in Tralee, no questions were asked of Ray O’Mahony’s side.
Though no fault of their own, there was nothing here that will stand to Cork on their travels to Austin Stack Park for next Wednesday’s Munster final.
The result was long decided come half-time. The result was decided as early as the 11th minute. The hosts had already taken their advantage into double-digit territory. 2-5 to 0-1. A long and punishing evening lay in store for the visitors.
Cork broke lines and tackles as if there were no lines and tackles to break. They moved from one end of the field to the other with consummate ease. They kicked scores under little to no pressure. They fashioned goal chances as if such chances were going out of fashion.
O’Mahony’s young charges raised four first-half green flags, had another disallowed for a square ball, and saw a sixth opportunity saved by Cian Corry.
Hugh O’Connor, one of eight first-half Cork scorers, was the first to find the Banner net. He had the simple task of palming home after Ross Corkery cut in from the South Stand side before delivering a looping pass across the face of goal to where O’Connor waited unwatched.
The eighth minute major had Cork on 1-4 and Clare not yet on the board. Corkery and O’Connor reversed roles two minutes later for their second goal.
Corner-forward Dara Sheedy, corner-back Dan Twomey, and plenty more players occupying green grass between the No.15 and No.2 wrote their name on the scoresheet in the ensuing quarter of an hour.
Sheedy was creator of goal number three on 29 minutes. His was a wonderful cover-beating pass to Ed Myers. The full-forward’s finish wasn’t far off matching the delivery.
Two minutes later, Cork were in for a fourth to push them into a 4-11 to 0-3 – 20-point difference – interval lead. The goal captured Clare’s evening of woe. Goalkeeper Corry was punished for leaving his restart too short. Cork took control of possession. Midfielder Micheal McSweeney, the provider of two points, slipped to O’Connor and he struck.
Cork’s intensity and drive fell off a cliff upon the resumption. Understandably so. And although Sheedy did roll in goal number five on the three-quarter hour mark, more of the play was up the Blackrock End where Darren Keane, from the placed-ball, Luke Pyne, Seán McMahon, and Michael Kelly brought Clare’s tally into double-digits.
Aaron Mannix and Twomey twice denied Clare a goal. The goalkeeper, corner-back, and the rest of their defensive colleagues know next Wednesday in Tralee will be a far more strenuous outing.
The Rebels were in TOP form last night as they scored 5 goals in round 3 of the Munster U20 Football Championship 👏
