Clare extended their Cusack Park hold over Kilkenny after a grandstand finish consolidated their unbeaten start to this year’s Allianz Hurling League in front of 6,824.

While the Cats were victorious in back-to-back All-Ireland Semi-Final showdowns between these heavyweights over the past two seasons, it’s now eleven years since Kilkenny garnered anything from Ennis after the Banner hit the final three points to edge an inch-tight battle.

With a succession of misses and saves only adding to a tense finale, a share of the spoils seemed inevitable as the sides were locked at 0-16 to 0-16 entering the final few minutes.

However, a momentum-fuelled blitz by the 70 minute mark through Aidan McCarthy, Diarmuid Ryan and Peter Duggan provided some clear daylight for the first time since the opening half. It wasn’t over yet as Kilkenny rallied, only to see scrambled efforts from Mikey Butler and TJ Reid both prevented by goalkeeper Eamonn Foudy before Shane Murphy fired agonisingly wide of the post.

Being in the ascendency for the majority, Clare just about merited their latest victory and can take great heart from what was a more experimental side than their opponents as only eight of the 18 that faced the Cats in Croke Park were in action in contrast to eleven from the visitors.

The returning TJ Reid was as talismanic as ever, helped in the scoring stakes by Paddy Deegan in the opening period and substitute John Donnelly after the break.

However, a more balanced Banner cold boast eight different scorers including an impressive five points from play for the elusive David Fitzgerald.

Playing into the breeze, the home side warmed to their task with four of the first five points as Peter Duggan, Mark Rodgers, Conor Leen and David Reidy catapulted their side into the lead.

Kilkenny kept in touch through Reid’s placed balls which contrasted five missed frees for Clare through three different takers.

Kilkenny capitalised to finally regain parity by the 33rd minute after a four point unanswered rally, two from Reid, only for the hosts to finally find their range as Aidan McCarthy converted a brace of injury-time frees to ensure a 0-11 to 0-9 interval edge.

The second half proved equally as compelling as these sides went blow for blow for the majority. Clare did manage to largely keep their noses in front through McCarthy’s frees and Fitzgerald who also had a shot tipped over by goalkeeper Eoin Murphy at the turn of the final quarter at 0-14 to 0-12.

Kilkenny carved out a glorious opportunity of their own entering the final ten minutes but Reid and substitute Donnelly were both denied by the inspired Foudy.

John Donnelly did level up the tie for only the fourth time entering the final five minutes but despite a ten minute barren patch, the home side finally sparked into life with three points in just two minutes to ultimately seal victory and effectively a place in the last four.
