Strong second-half display sees Clare overcome Cork

ALLIANZ HURLING LEAGUE DIVISION 1 GROUP A

CLARE 1-25 CORK 2-19

Report by John Fogarty for the Irish Examiner newspaper

A storming third quarter by Clare against the wind was key to this opening day win over Cork in Ennis.

In front of a 7,380 crowd, Cork weren’t able to build on a good opening period facing the breeze.

Unrecognisable from the first half where they were caught on their heels for two goals, an energetic Clare had fashioned eight-point lead by the 54th minute. Mark Rodgers started the new half with four pointed frees and it wasn’t until Patrick Horgan responded with one of his own in the 50th minute that Cork scored in that period.

Seán O’Donoghue came up from the back to score Cork’s first from play in 22 minutes. It started a revival of sorts and the gap was cut to two but substitute Seadna Morey put paid to it with a 65th minute goal.

Seadha Morey second half goal for Clare

Cork narrowed the margin once and a brace of Shane Barrett scores slice the deficit to three. However, Clare were able to augment their total with points from Morey, Meehan and Rodgers, who sent over his 13th of the afternoon.

Clare won the toss and chose to try and harness the wind element in the first half. Leading by a point at the break, 0-14 to 2-7, they didn’t exploit it as much as they liked.

Indiscipline and failing to track Cork’s runners were the root causes of it. With a trio of unanswered points, Clare led by six in the 19th minute but the advantage was halved when Horgan’s drop shot found the net after strong solos by Seán Twomey and Shane Kingston leading up to it.

Patrick Horgan first half goal for Cork

Patrick Collins kept out a Rodgers’ strike in the 25th minute and while the Clare forward had the consolation of converting a 65 the margin only improved to three, which was then cancelled out by a second Cork goal.

This time, it was ingenuity and vision from Robbie O’Flynn that created the score. Taking a Horgan sideline, he looped the ball over the Clare cover to find Tommy O’Connell running into space. He sidestepped before sending a rasping shot past Eibhear Quilligan.

Tommy O’Connell first half goal for Cork

Clare outscored Clare three points to two to ensure they had something to show for the half at the interval but Cork could consider it half a job well done. Ultimately, that’s all it was.
