Super second half display sees Wexford brush Waterford aside

Allianz Football League Division 4: Wexford 0-21 Waterford 1-7

Report by Brendan Furlong for the Irish Examiner newspaper

A dominant second half display from Wexford saw them cruise to a comfortable eleven point victory over Waterford in their Allianz National Football League Division 4 game at Chadwicks Wexford Park.

Both teams entered the game off disappointing starts, with Wexford having gathered just two points from three games, while Waterford were pointless, leaving the home side needing both points should they entertain hope of getting themselves back into the promotion race.

It was Waterford who looked the more impressive side during the opening thirty-five minutes and but for their lack of finishing could have troubled the home side even more.

After Tom O’Connell had pointed the visitors in front after three minutes, Wexford responded with points from Eoghan Nolan, free, and Glen Malone, but the sides were deadlock 0-4 each after twenty-three minutes.

Both sides were guilty of poor finishing in what was a mediocre clash, with Wexford moving further in front through points from Sean Nolan and Graeme Cullen to lead 0-6 to 0-5 at the interval.

The opening minutes of the second half saw Wexford take total control with quickfire points from Dylan Furlong, Kevin O’Grady and Sean Nolan to lead 0-9 to 0-5 after thirty-eight minutes.

The gap continued to widen as Waterford had faded completely from the game, with their attacks becoming less infrequent, as the home side continued to pile on the points to lead 0-13 to 0-5, before the visitors opened their second half account after fifty-four minutes through a Jason Curry point.

Wexford continued to create the chances with Brosnan, Eoghan Nolan and Glen Malone sending over some fine points, with Waterford getting their goal in additional time from full-forward Tom O’Connell who found the net from close in.
