Amond goal touch for Carlow condemns Tipp to opening day loss in league basement
Allianz FL Division 4 Tipperary 1-14 Carlow 3-10
Report by Stephen Barry for the Irish Examiner newspaper
Aaron Amond showed he has an eye for goal like his soccer pro brother Pádraig as he gave 14-man Carlow an opening victory away to Tipperary in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League.
The Old Leighlin wing-back broke free in the 63rd minute as Tipperary pressed up to spoil Paul Kelly’s first day out as home manager at Semple Stadium, following Conor Crowley and Darragh Foley’s first-half goals.
That winning score came after Colm Hulton was sent off with 20 minutes to play just as a free from Seán O’Connor (0-9) had levelled the game.
But from there, the visitors kicked the next 1-2, while a late Tipp comeback was denied a winner when goalkeeper Jack Rodgers’ shot was taken off the line by another debutant John Phiri.
With some experienced players stepping away, Kelly handed out five League debuts including to the entire half-back line of James Morris, Stephen Grogan, and Kieran Costello, plus Naas keeper Rodgers.
Shane Neville, who won a Clare SFC title with Cratloe, completed that quintet. He, along with Paddy Creedon, were both in Liam Cahill’s hurling squad this time last year but both showed their ability to take a score early in this contest.
The Barrowsiders carried over a more settled team from their positive Tailteann Cup showing last summer, while adding two League debutants from the start in Collie Byrne and Paddy McDonnell.
That greater continuity translated onto the pitch as Carlow opened brightly with four of the first five points from Ross Dunphy, Foley (0-2), and Jamie Clarke.
But Tipp were level when they exploited their opponents’ full-court press for a smash-and-grab goal. Quick kick passes from Riain Quigley and O’Connor caught the keeper behind the play and Creedon applied the finish.
Carlow responded in kind when Crowley, a late change to the team named to start, gathered a ball off the post. His dummy handpass created the space to unleash a close-range shot to the net.
They doubled their green-flag haul in the 24th minute when Dunphy turned down an easy point to handpass across goal for Foley to palm home. 2-5 to 1-3 now.
By the half-hour, Kelly had made a double sub, introducing Cathal Deely and Conor Cadell as they switched to a more aggressive press. That forced a kick-out turnover for Creedon to cut the half-time arrears to four, 2-7 to 1-6.
That had evaporated by the 44th minute after four points in a row from O’Connor (two each from frees and play).
Carlow were then reduced to 14 men after Hulton picked up two yellow cards in the space of five minutes.
The same stoppage in play saw keeper Johnny Furey exit with an injury after Luke Shanahan had a shot taken off the line, while his replacement Ciarán Cunningham soon blocked a Neville effort.
But following O’Connor’s tap-over equalising free after the red card, 14-man Carlow scored the next 1-2 as they countered with pace and precision led by Mikey Bambrick.
His charge created a point for Dunphy and Phiri pointed on his introduction.
Then, Bambrick turned over a lax pass and sent Amond free into the Tipp 65, occupied only by back-peddling keeper Rodgers. He was clinical in his finish, carrying it all the way in before pulling the trigger.
O’Connor and Jack Kennedy narrowed the gap to two but they couldn’t find the winner they needed.
