Con O’Callaghan hat-trick sees Dublin put sorry Kerry to the sword

DUBLIN 3-18 KERRY 1-14

Report by John Fogarty for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Con O’Callaghan’s hat-trick of goals put a sorry Kerry to the sword in Croke Park this evening.

O’Callaghan’s scuffed but well placed finish in the 64th minute ended all hopes of Kerry gaining anything from a game they deserved little from.

Clifford’s presence would have attracted many neutrals in the 36,807 crowd to GAA HQ but it was O’Callaghan who delivered the star turn with a most handsome 3-5.

Ten points inferior on two occasions in the second half, Kerry were still nine behind at half-time (2-11 to 0-8). A Joe O’Connor goal in the 42nd minute sliced the difference to four and for less than a minute they were three behind.

The margin was four up to the 61st minute when Tom Lahiff sent over a mark and O’Callaghan grabbed his third. Brian Fenton sent over a point off his left and Seán Bugler added his third to win the second half as well for the All-Ireland champions.

This wasn’t a Dublin team we had seen in any of their three previous games nor was it the Kerry team witnessed in their games against Derry, Monaghan and Mayo. Half-hearted in their press on the Dublin kick-out, they were often caught out with long David O’Hanlon restarts in the first half.

Dublin’s first goal in the sixth minute came far too easy. A kick-pass by Niall Scully down the sideline to Peadar Ó Cofaigh-Byrne was clever but the tracking of John Small was poor. He found O’Callaghan and the Cuala man struck to the net despite being off balance.

Kerry offset some of the damage with a couple of points, the first from David Clifford that he fizzed over the bar. It was one of several regrets for the two-time player of the year as he recorded three wides and had another half-blocked effort drop short.

At the other end, the closest to this throne O’Callaghan was enjoying himself. Consulting his umpires, Conor Lane awarded a penalty for Dylan Casey’s silly pull on Paddy Small and O’Callaghan had a second goal to his name by the 15th minute.

A third almost came his way in the 18th minute but Shane Ryan got down quickly to keep out his low shot. But Dublin’s onslaught continued and by the 20th minute they were nine points to the good.

Less than a minute later, Clifford struck a free off target. From a mark, he exchanged a point with Niall Scully before hitting the side-netting in the 23rd minute and in a tale of a two stars O’Callaghan pointed his fourth seconds afterwards.

Before the interval, Jack O’Connor was down from this perch in the Hogan Stand to join his assistant Micheál Quirke on the sideline, the lengthy conflab between the two punctuated by O’Connor’s throw of a water bottle.

His team outscored Dublin three points to two for the last 11 minutes of the half. It was a marginal gain for Kerry on an evening when it seemed from a long way out that all was lost.
