AIB Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter-Final
Moyle Rovers 0-25 Kilgarvan 1-10
Report by Enda Treacy for Tipperarylive.ie
Moyle Rovers started their AIB Munster Championship campaign in commanding fashion with an impressive dismissal of Kerry Intermediate champions Kilgarvan in the quarter-final clash played in Ardfinnan on Saturday afternoon.
Dara Ryan led the Tipperary champions to victory with a brilliant individual display as they had far too much threat around the pitch for their Kerry counterparts to deal with, and really, the scoreline could have been a lot healthier come the final whistle, such was the dominance of the Monroe club.
The result was never in doubt in truth, and even without the services of Stephen Quirke again, the Rovers forwards were in prolific form and they got going from the off when Daire Luttrell scored a classy opening point from the dugout side in Ardfinnan to get his side going.
Dara Ryan was the driving force behind the strong start. He scored eight points in the first half for a total of 15 for his team. His free-taking was imperious as the rest of the team made hay from play.
Points from Shane English (2), Killian Butler, Riain Quigley, and Anthony Phelan had the Tipp champions in pole position at the break as the Kerry men struggled massively to make an impression up front with Sean Godfrey scoring two points along with scores from Gearoid Fennessy and Glyn Egan. Rovers in control at 0-15 to 0-4 at half-time.
It was all a little too easy from a Moyle Rovers viewpoint and the expectation would be that Kilgarvan would come out swinging in the second half, and that’s exactly what transpired; the Kerry side scoring 1-1 in the opening five minutes.
The goal came in classy fashion in the 34th minute when a Gearoid Fennessy sideline cut floated dangerously into the goalmouth and with sublime precision, full forward Daniel Casey pulled overhead with the ball flying past Brian Gleeson into the back of the net.
That had Kilgarvan back in contention and Rovers nearly had the perfect response when Shane English had a powerful goal effort saved excellently by Patrick O’Shea and with Dean English pouncing on the rebound to goal, it looked like the perfect response. The joy was short-lived though as the referee consulted with his umpires and after a quick consultation, the goal was ruled out for a square ball.
However, it never instigated a comeback for the Kerry side as Rovers went back into cruise control thereafter, and found the scores way easier once Dara Ryan had scored his side’s first point of the half two minutes later and with his half-forward counterparts Shane English and Killian Butler getting in on the act again, along with the score of the game coming from a searing Rory Collins run, they had the job done after three-quarters of the contest.
The result was a foregone conclusion now and Moyle Rovers finished the game with some fantastic scores from Dara Ryan again, with Ben Owens finding the target from distance late on, it was the cherry on the cake for the Tipp champions who now go forward to face Cork champions Russell Rovers on Saturday, November 16th in a Cork venue.
That game represents a big opportunity for Moyle Rovers to reach a Munster Final at this grade, and while they are firmly in bonus territory, they will be hoping for another similar performance in two weeks that just might take them to a first provincial decider since 2007.
