Round-up – where to begin – 49 scores, numerous missed opportunities (17 wides for Tipperary, 9 wides for Cork), outstanding performances on both sides. A tribute to both teams with Tipperary just about getting over the line in the end. It would have not taken much for the result to go the other way. Two tired sets of players make their way off of the hallowed ground of Semple Stadium having given their all. All those present certainly got their money’s worth but it is Tipperary who progress to the semi-final and a meeting with Waterford.

6:50pm – Both teams teams have a lot of Senior experience in their ranks with Tipperary holding the favourites tag with 9 of last Sunday’s panel in the starting line-up tonight. However, going back 3 years ago there was little between the counties when at Minor level with Cork winning the Munster title before losing out to Tipperary in the All-Ireland. Players like Paudie O’Sullivan and team captain Patrick Horgan hold down central positions for Cork and will be in direct opposition to Seamus Callanan and Padraic Maher from 7:30pm onwards – two fascinating match-ups but there are similar line-ups all over the field. Cork are managed by John Considine fresh from his 2 match stint as the interirm Senior Hurling manager during the National League. Considine’s counterpart Declan Carr is in his second year having captured Munster honours last year, a title that is on the line here tonight. The referee tonight is Pat Casey of Waterford – there is a light breeze blowing towards the Killinan End in Semple Stadium with a warm sun keeping the patrons warm. The heat will die down surely as the game goes on but the use of fresh players as substitutes in the second half is sure to have a bearing. Check back in before the throw-in for the team news ahead of the throw-in.

AFTER an enthralling 80-minute saga, Tipperary eventually edged past Cork in last night’s Bord Gáis Energy Munster U21HC quarter-final at Semple Stadium.

In a match that crackled with electricity throughout, Tipperary conjured up two key factors to enable them to breast the tape in first place. Plundering the only two goals of the game was of immeasurable value, while their big names came to the fore as the action trundled into extra-time.

Defensive lynchpins Padraig Maher and Thomas Stapleton generated storming finishes, while Noel McGrath hurled a world of ball when switched to midfield. In attack, Seamus Callanan made several lung-bursting runs deep into the Cork defence, while Pa Bourke’s gilded attacking play registered a hefty 1-9 total against the backdrop of a team total of 17 wides.

It was rough justice on Cork to wind up with the losers’ garlands. They fought vigorously from the start with a robust defence to base their challenge on. Paudie O’Sullivan was immense at centre back with Aidan Walsh and Conor O’Sullivan putting in great shifts elsewhere in the backline.

In attack Patrick Horgan was in luminous form but struggled lacked of a supporting cast. Subs Luke O’Farrell and Padraig Gould did enough when introduced to suggest they should have started, while Lorcan McLoughlin did swing over three fine points.

Normal time was a gripping affair with the sides sticking close to each other from the off. In all there was equality on the scoreboard on 13 occasions during the 60 minutes.

The first half was peppered with goal opportunities that Tipperary missed but before half-time they got the move and execution just right.

An errant handpass in the Cork defence was seized by Pa Bourke who transferred to Callanan, and the centre-forward eschewed the option of tapping over the bar to dispatch the ball towards Shane Bourke. The JK Brackens man turned neatly and lashed a drive to the far corner.

In the scoring stakes the match could have been distilled down to a shootout between the side’s respective free-takers in the first half, Patrick Horgan and Pa Bourke displaying laser-like accuracy from dead balls.

Horgan also sparkled from open play with a beautiful brace of points to complement his three frees, while Bourke arrowed over six points in the first half. Midfielder Leigh Desmond chipped in with an important pair for Cork as well, but it was Shane Bourke’s late salvo that saw Tipperary lead 1-8 to 0-9 at the interval.

Cork composed a splendid start to the second half reeling off points from Horgan, 3) and Andy Walsh to nudge themselves 0-13 to 1-9 in front.

But then Tipperary pounced for a critical score. Callanan made a lung-bursting run on the wing, passed inside to Patrick Maher who was fouled and Pa Bourke crashed the resultant penalty to the net.

That score nourished Tipperary’s hopes and they stormed on looking far more assured. McGrath’s switch to midfield paid a handsome dividend as he dictated plays, corner-backs Donagh Maher and Kevin Maher attacked the ball with great success and when McGrath clipped over a 49th minute point, the tide of momentum seemed to lay behind Tipperary as they led 2-12 to 0-15.

But Cork summoned up a wonderful recovery and created a gripping finale. They strung together a sequence of points from Gould, O’Farrell, 2) and McLoughlin to creep ahead by one. Tipperary’s retort consisted of Bourke and Callanan points to restore them to the ascendancy, but an exquisite sideline cut by Desmond tied it up again.

Substitute John O’Neill, who had an enterprising cameo when introduced, appeared to have nailed victory for Tipperary only for a rousing score by McLoughlin to deliver the spectre of extra-time, at 2-15 to 0-21.

Tipperary made a clinical burst early on in extra-time and it proved essential to the outcome. Callanan started to weave incisive runs and his brace helped send them 2-18 to 0-22 clear. Cork replied forcefully with a Horgan free but the Glen Rovers dangerman was then denied a goal by a point-blank save by Bill McCormack.

It proved Cork’s best chance at getting the goal their challenge badly required and Tipperary were in no mood to relinquish superiority from thereon in. Callanan and Bourke teamed up to insert daylight between the sides late on, and O’Neill applied the coup de grâce to seal their passage through to a semi-final date with Waterford on July 15.

Prolific Horgan not enough to stop Tipperary advancing

HOLDERS Tipperary clinched a dramatic extra-time victory against Cork at Semple Stadium last night in front of 4,138 spectators.

The Premier County now travel to Walsh Park to face Waterford in the semi-final on July 15.

Lorcan McLoughlin’s 59th-minute point for Cork sent the tie into extra-time but both sides missed chances to win it before two additional periods of 10 minutes.

This incredible tie was level on 13 occasions, including eight times in the first half before Shane Bourke’s goal on the stroke of half time handed Tipp a 1-8 to 0-9 lead.

Tipp grabbed a second goal when Pa Bourke netted a penalty eight minutes into the second half.

Last year’s beaten All-Ireland finalists Tipp, with nine senior panellists in their starting team, registered 17 wides and struggled to shake off a dogged Cork, inspired by 12 points from Patrick Horgan.

However, leading by 2-18 to 0-23 after the first period of extra-time, a late surge sealed it for Tipp.

Tipperary deny Cork again

HOLDERS,TIPPERARY dug deep in extra-time to oust Cork in a thrilling Munster U-21 hurling championship tie at Semple Stadium, Thurles, last evening.

In a tame first half the sides traded points with Pa Bourke (Tipp) and Cork’s Pat Horgan, deadly accurate. Cork were a point ahead after 29 minutes when Burke and Seamus Callanan combined to set up Shane Bourke for a smashing goal which gave Tipp an interval lead of 1-8 to 0-9.

When Pa Bourke blazed a penalty to the Cork net eight minutes into the second half, it looked like Tipp might take over but Cork never gave up and four points between the 48th and 52nd minutes had them ahead.

Now it was Tipp’s turn to chase the game. They managed to get ahead again but two minutes from time Lorcan McLoughlin equalised for Cork, 2-15 to 0-21.

Tipp edged the first half of extra-time adding three points to Cork’s two, but Tipp goalkeeper Bill McCormack denied Pat Horgan a Cork goal in the ninth minute. In an exciting second period, Tipp added points by Pa Bourke and Callanan to Cork’s sole effort from Pat Horgan, to clinch victory.

Full forward Patrick Maher, Padraic Maher, Thomas Stapleton, Seamus Callanan, Noel McGrath and Pa Bourke were key players for Tipp. Pat Horgan, Lorcan McLoughlin, Leigh Desmond, Aidan Walsh, and Paudie O Sullivan impressed for Cork.
