Superb Spain fires Waterford to victory over Limerick

Waterford 1-20 Limerick 0-14
A stunning personal haul of 1-13 from Ballygunner starlet, Cormac Spain, ensured Waterford eventually broke the Limerick resistance in the Munster Minor HC clash in Dungarvan.
His late goal cemented this round-robin victory after a very even opening three quarters.
Following a narrow victory away to Tipperary last Friday, the expectation was that Waterford would make it two from two. Limerick, despite suffering a defeat to Cork, made this game a real fight from the start. Donal O’Grady’s Treaty are now pointless from two outings.
The reliable and at times unmarkable Spain was assisted by Gearóid O’Shea and Jamie Shanahan in attack, while for the Treaty, the hard-working wing-backs, Seán Fitzgerald and Michael Hanly were able to provide a launchpad for Rory Hanly and Killian Begley in attack.
In the opening half, the sides were level six times. This was in no small part due to the sharpshooting of freetakers Spain and Waters. The largest lead of the half, was a short-lived one, of just two points.
Waters and Paul Murphy got the men in green off to a perfect start before Spain and Shanahan ensured the sides were level 0-3 each, inside ten minutes.
There was nothing to choose between the sides. Both sides had half chances for goals, but neither keeper was called into action. For Limerick the directness of Rory Hanly at centre-forward was a real handful.
The second half belonged to Spain and his sparring partner, Shane Power. They forged too many openings against the wind and with Spain unerring from placed-balls, the lack of creativity for Limerick was punished.
The first glut of scores for either side saw six of seven points go to the hosts as Spain and Power were on target. Limerick, with a reply through sub Gavin O’Brien – failed to get the turnovers and possession that served them so well in the first half.
When a late goal opening arrived for Limerick, midfielder David O’Keefe saw James Comerford deflect if for a 65, which was pointed by Waters. That would have given feint hope but this half belonged to James O’Connor’s youngsters.
The corner forward then torpedoed to the net late on to push eight between them and he had time to add one more and set up De La Salle’s Power for the final score.
In round three, Waterford are idle, before they travel to Cork, while the Shannonsiders will travel to Tipperary on April 18th. The other round two clash sees Clare entertain the Rebels on Saturday, April 12th.
