Munster GAA are saddened to learn of the death of former Limerick and Munster Footballer Tony Fitzgerald on Tuesday October 6th.
At club level, Tony captained Ballysteen in 1964 to their first and only Limerick Senior Football Championship. Tony would go on to win 3 more Limerick Senior Football Championship titles with Askeaton in 1965, 1966 and 1972.
At inter-county level, Tony captained Limerick in the 1965 Munster Championship when Limerick recorded a semi-final victory over Cork before losing out to Kerry in the Munster Final.
Tony lined out for Munster Footballers in the Railway Cup in 1966 when the lost to Ulster in the Final and again in 1967 when Connacht defeated Munster in the semi-final.
Munster Chairman Liam Lenihan upon learning of the news said “Tony was one of Limerick’s best players during the 1960s, captaining Limerick to a famous win over Cork in 1965. Tony also lined out for Munster on a couple of occasions. On behalf of Munster Council, we extend our condolences to his wife, family and large circle of friends. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam.”
