The game got off to a tentative start on a chilly November morning in Austin Stack’s Park with neither side playing the expansive attacking style of football generally associated with both schools. Despite playing against a slight breeze, it was the Green who got a grip on the game midway through the first half with Adam McDonagh who was only promoted to the starting fifteen just before the game being one of the standout players in the opening half. Surging runs from Togor Silong of Austin Stacks along with goals from Colm Browne and Daragh Cunnane meant that The Green took a five-point lead into the second half.

The second half was much more free flowing with St. Brendan’s finding their groove about ten minutes after the restart. Jack Fogarty of Kilcummin was excellent in winning possession in defense and then distributing the ball to his forwards. Padraic Moynihan also gave great service to the inside forwards of St Brendan’s. The interplay between the St. Brendan’s half and full forward lines caused all sorts of problems for the C.B.S. backline but they couldn’t turn this great play into scores.

A key moment in the game came when The Green’s keeper Sean Collins misjudged a sliding challenge on Luke O’Neill. Collins made up for this by saving the spot kick. St. Brendan’s continued to pepper the CBS goal and if it wasn’t for an inspired performance from Collins who saved two penalties on the day the Munster Div 1 trophy could have been heading out to Killarney. CBS improved defensively after this spell with Jake Foley making some vital blocks. The introduction of Ruari Reen, Aaron Nolan and Sean Barrett for the Green and a goal from Damien Hogan also helped them to see the game out.

All in all, St. Brendan’s will feel aggrieved that they did not take their chances to possibly win the tie but it was a deserved win for St. Mary’s CBS The Green who added another title to their long list of accolades.
