WATERFORD boss John Owens heaped praise on his understrength team after stunning Tipperary in this McGrath Cup quarter-final at Walsh Park yesterday. The visitors started well with points from James Egan (free), Peter Acheson, and Barry Grogan. But Waterford settled and efforts from Kevin Power, Mark Ferncombe and Brian Wall (free) had them level by the 20th minute. Scores from Egan and Seamus Grogan edged Tipperary ahead but Waterford finished the half in style and points from Power, Shane Briggs, and John Hurney had them 0-6 to 0-5 ahead at the break. After early Tipp pressure on the resumption, Waterford responded with a brace of superb points from full forward Patrick Hurney. Tipp had two late goal chance but a home defence, in which Shane Briggs was outstanding, comfortably held out.

Waterford 0-11 Tipperary 0-9
WATERFORD ARE through to the semi-finals of the McGrath Cup after a two point win over Tipperary in Walsh Park yesterday. Tipperary started the game very strongly and with Barry Grogan looking very dangerous, they raced into an early three-point lead. However, Waterford soon settled down and with corner-forward Seán Fleming very prominent, they were level after 20 minutes with Kevin Power kicking the first of his three points.
The sides were level until Waterford centre-back Shane Briggs broke upfield to kick a fine point which sent his side in at the break with a one-point lead. Waterford were the first out of the blocks in the second half with Eamonn Walsh and then Kevin Power scoring to extend their lead to three points. Waterford were boosted by three second-half points by full-forward Patrick Hurney, which were enough to help them seal a morale-boosting victory.
