Corn Sheamais Ui Dhonnchu (under-17 B hurling): John The Baptist CS Hospital 4-14 Tralee CBS 1-17

The scoreline might suggest a six-point difference but John The Baptist CS Hospital will testify that it was a game of inches in this Corn Sheamais Ui Dhonnchu (17 B H) final.

The Limerick school were marginally the better side against a CBS The Green side who gave up four gilt-edged goal chances while Hospital scored four, all coming from full-forward Conor Anthony O’Dwyer.

Crucially, it was his fourth goal in the 56th minute that pushed his side five clear, when the game was on a knife edge.

It was a game that John The Baptist CS looked as if they might pull away from the Tralee school in the opening half but CBS fought back on each occasion.

Mickey Corridon gave Tralee CBS an early lead with two frees but Conor Anthony O’Dwyer struck his first goal in the ninth minute when he finished Christian Higgins’ delivery to the Tralee net.

But by the 12th minute, Tralee were back in front when Mikey Corridon fielded a high cross, before rounding his marker and batting the ball to net.

By the 20 minute-mark, John The Baptist had moved 1-7 to 1-3 in front thanks to points from O’Dwyer, Conor Shanahan, Cian McNamara and Jamie O’Shea but the Green refused to lie down.

They fired over five of the last six points of the half, through Matthew O’Sullivan (0-2), Corridon, the outstanding Jake Rochford and Alex Relihan, while Ryan Hanly – with a classy point – was the Limerick side’s sole reply.

Tralee were denied a goal when ‘keeper Ciaran Hyland made a double save to deny Relihan and Matthew Shanahan and he also denied Shanahan again on the stroke of half time as the sides retired level, 1-8 apiece.

Tralee CBS began the second half on a bright note as Corridon and Luke Hannafin gave them the lead twice in the opening five minutes.

But in the 38th minute, John The Baptist struck for two goals from O’Dwyer and suddenly the Limerick side were five clear (3-9 to 1-10), as Tralee shot four wides in the same period.

But Tralee CBS, driven on by Tadgh O Slatara, Matthew O’Sullivan, Brody Leen and Jake Rochford added five points, four from O’Sullivan frees and by the end of the third quarter, it was level pegging at 3-9 to 1-15.

The game was now in the melting pot as Colm Cleary and ‘keeper Hyland kept the Green at bay, until 56th minute when John The Baptist, leading by two but under the cosh, broke upfield and O’Dwyer scored his fourth goal from close range, with the Tralee defenders claiming a square ball.

But the goal stood and despite a late scare, when Hyland saved from Relihan who was through one on one, John The Baptist CS Hospital just about deserved their win after a gripping contest.
