Crowds gathered to the north campus in the University of Limerick on a cold Friday morning as St Mary’s secondary school of Newport and Hazelwood College of Dromcollogher came face to face in the TUS Munster GAA Post Primary Schools Under 17 C Hurling Final on Friday morning.
The match got into full swing with St Mary’s winning the throw in and Hazelwood coming back up the field to take the first point of the match. Both teams going back and forth with possession saw one point being responded with another, impressive scores being taken by both teams including players Conor McLoughlin of St Mary’s and Paul Murphy of Hazelwood College.
With St Mary’s only a point up Charlie Tobin worked the ball through the Hazelwood defence leading to a goal finished by Kion Quigley. As more points were swapped, the Hazelwood defence including the great effort of goalie, Jack O’Reilly, denied St Mary’s another goal opportunity. Both teams continued to take their points and St Mary’s defence worked hard to finish the first half leading by a point, with the scoreline 1-9 to 0-9 to St Mary’s.
Nerves were felt as the second half throw in, was closely followed by a free for Newport. Clearances from both defensive lines meant both teams kept the scoreboard tipping with points. However, after St Mary’s received a yellow card, Hazelwood seized their first goal of the game from wing forward John Lenihan. Tensions built on the pitch with the score line close at 1-16 to 1-15 to Hazelwood College.
Although the St Mary’s defence showed strong performance from players like Aaron Lane and Luke O’Sullivan, Hazelwood had a determination that could not be stopped and following the momentum gained from the goal, Hazelwood would continue to convert their points and win the game on a scoreline of 1-18 to 1-14.
