Kerry became the first – and probably the last – winners of the special Munster Under 17 football competition following a deserved victory over Cork before a fine attendance of 1,631 at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park this evening. It was a tough encounter between these age old rivals with no quarter asked or given and while Cork may have had as much possession as the winners, Kerry were the better side at taking the chances that came their way.

Cork it was who got off to the better start reeling off three points within the first four minutes courtesy of Blake Murphy (free and play) and the towering Mark Keane and at that stage Kerry certainly looked like they were in for a torrid evening of it. Sean Doherty opened Kerry’s account in the 5th minute but then Kerry had a let-off when Conor McMahon hit the cross bar when he looked like goaling. Kerry, with the aid of the wind, improved and points from Michael Slattery and Michael Kelleher levelled the game up after 15 minutes by which stage Cork had kicked four wides.

Kerry showed a gradual improvement and Michael Kelleher’s pointed free was followed by good scores from Dara Casey and Michael Slattery who had by now moved out to centre forward to good effect. Minor player Mark Cronin had his first point in the 24th minute for Cork followed by another from Blake Murphy but Sean Keane responded for the homeside and the sides swapped points again before the break with Blake Murphy for the visitors and Michael Slattery for the home side pointing to leave the half time score reading 8 points to 6 in Kerry’s favour.

Emotions were high as the sides left the field but Kerry resumed in a determined mood and had three quick-fire scores inside the opening five minutes of the half before Cork had settled. Each of them, from Franz Sauerland, halftime sub Dáire Cleary and Barry Keane , could arguably have been goals as Kerry made inroads for the first time through the centre of the Cork defence and Kerry were 11 to 6 clear. Mark Cronin and Conor Russell responded as Cork began to use the wind advantage and while Sean Keane had a good score for Kerry, Blake Murphy was almost in on goal but settled for the point to leave Kerry three ahead at the three quarter stage.

Cork were on top by now but poor finishing was to cost them while Kerry also had a couple of bad wides from good positions. Sean Keane gave Kerry breathing space with a point in the 20th minute and Fergal Barry had a great run out of defence which ended with him being hauled to the ground at the other end at the expense of a black card as he bore down on goal. The free, from an advantageous position, was missed but the siege at the other end had been lifted and Kerry added two more points from the impressive Dáire Cleary and Michael Kelleher either side of a Mark Cronin point for Cork. At the very end Sean Keane had a great chance to wrap it up when he was one on one with Cork keeper Cian Lankford but the Corkman stood his ground.

So a very satisfying win for the homeside who recovered from a shaky start to take the game to their opponents. Kerry’s next outing will not be until the August weekend when the semi finals – Munster V Connaught – will be played. The final is on August 20th. After the game the Chairman of the Munster Council, Jerry O’Sullivan presented the Cup to winning captain Sean O’Connell who had put in a great hour’s work around the centre of the field.

The Kerry Under 17 Football Team to play Cork in the final of the Munster GAA Under 17 Football competition at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park at 7pm on Tuesday evening has one change in personnel from the side that defeated Tipperary in the semi final; Donal O’Sullivan misses the final due to a hand injury sustained in the closing stages of the Minor semi final between the sides and is replaced by Sean Doherty of Glenflesk with Barry Slattery of Legion joining the match day squad.

The team contains three players who saw action in that Minor semi final; Goalkeeper Deividas Uosis and centre back Eddie Horan started in that game while Michael Slattery was introduced as a sub. Under 17 captain Sean O’Connell and Dylan Casey were also members of the Minor panel.

Kerry and Cork go head to head again in the Under 17 Final

Following fast on their Munster Minor Championship semi final clash last week, Kerry and Cork go head to head once again, this time in the Munster GAA Under 17 Football Final in Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Tuesday evening at 7pm.

Both sides have a number of players from that Minor Semi Final eligible to play; Kerry can call on the likes of goalkeeper Deividas Uosis , Edward Horan, Michael Slattery and Dylan Casey and Cork have the likes of their towering midfielder Mark Keane, wing forward Jack Murphy and corner forward Mark Cronin available.

Kerry will be without Donal O’Sullivan who picked up a hand injury in the closing stages of the minor semi final and he will be a big loss to the home side. A feature of the Kerry panel of players is the spread of clubs and in particular the fact that a lot of the smaller rural clubs are represented.

Cork have had two games in the competition defeating Waterford by 6-24 to 0-1 in Fraher Field in Round 1 and they then accounted for Limerick by 5-18 to 1-6 in the semi final. Kerry have played just one game in the competition when defeating Tipperary by 3-11 to 1-6 in the semi final in Austin Stack Park.

Donnacha O’Callaghan of Limerick will be the referee on Tuesday evening and following this final, the competition will be parked until later in the Summer.

The Semi finals will be played on the August weekend – Munster V Connaught – and final on August 20th.
