DESCRIPTION:St Kierans Kilkenny defeated Ardscoil Rís by 1-19 to 0-14 in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Croke Cup Hurling Semi-Final on Saturday March 2nd at Bansha. \n\n\nHeartbreak for Ardscoil Rís in All-Ireland Croke Cup semi-final https://t.co/Y9tDGZpMGQ \n— Limerick Leader / Limerick Live (@Limerick_Leader) March 2\, 2024 \n  \nHeartbreak for Ardscoil Rís in All-Ireland Croke Cup semi-final \nReport by Siadbh Redmond for the Limerick Leader newspaper \nARDSCOIL Rís’ hopes or reaching the final of the Masita All-Ireland Post-Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling Croke Cup were dashed after a 1-19 to 0-14 semi-final defeat to St Kieran’s College\, Kilkenny on Saturday afternoon in Bansha.  \nThe Limerick school’s flat first-half performance left them with a lot to do in the final 30 minutes of play as Leinster champions St Kieran’s had established a strong lead at the break. \nSt Kieran’s College\, will face St Raphaels\, of Galway\, in the Croke Cup final following the Connacht side’s dramatic victory over Dr Harty Cup holders Nenagh CBS.  \nIt was St Kieran’s College that struck first in the opening minutes in Bansha with an Aaron McEvoy free after two minutes. It took a further three minutes for Ardscoil Ris to level the scoreboard through Michael Collins.  \nThe Limerick’s team only goal chance was saved by keeper Stephen Manogue after 10 minutes of play spurring the Kilkenny team onwards scoring 1-6 in matter of minutes.  \nAfter only 12 minutes of play they found a free Sean Hunt in the full forward line\, who got around is marker with ease and finished his play with the sliothar finishing in the back of the net\, leaving St Kieran’s ahead 1-2 to 0-3 points ahead. \nArdscoil played a sweeper in the opening-half leaving Kieran’s backs wide open on every puck-out leaving them up the field easily and finding their forwards inside.  \nThings did not improve for Ardscoil Rís who struggled to gather their own puck-outs as the Kilkenny school motored on with fabulous scores from Rory Glynn\, Aaron McEvoy and Tomas Roche to put them well ahead.  \nA number of Marc O’Brien frees aided Ardscoil’s side of the scoreboard but Kieran’s continued to lead at half-time\, 1-11 to 0-7. \nArdscoil came out firing after the break with quick scores from Marc O’Brien and Michael Collins to give them some much needed confidence but Kieran’s continued to plough on.  \nAaron McEvoy was foot perfect during every free and slotted over 0-2 frees in the second-half. DESCRIPTION:St. Raphael’s Loughrea defeated Nenagh CBS by 1-20 to 3-13 in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Croke Cup Hurling Semi-Final on Saturday March 2nd at Tulla. \n\nKilleen lands late knockout punch for St Raphael’s Loughrea \nSt Raphael’s Loughrea 1-20 Nenagh CBS 3-13  \nReport by Christy O’Connor for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nAll year\, especially in the key latter of their crunch Dr Harty Cup games\, Nenagh CBS had found a way to win tight matches and\, while they looked set to do so again on Saturday\, they finally met a side that stared them in the eye and refused to blink. \nAfter going toe-to-toe with the Tipperary side all afternoon\, St Raphael’s rebounded off the ropes in the final minutes of additional time before knocking Nenagh CBS out on the final bell with a devastating counter-punch from Cullen Killeen. \nAfter absorbing everything that Nenagh had thrown at them\, the Loughrea side still looked to have run out of time as they trailed by three in the 64th minute but they reeled off four unanswered points in three minutes.  \nShortly beforehand\, Darragh McCarthy had the opportunity to put the game beyond their reach but Raphael’s goalkeeper Shane Murray made an incredible save.  \nMcCarthy pointed the subsequent ’65 but Raphael’s just refused to believe that the game had gone from them. \nAfter Vince Morgan had levelled up the match\, the seven minutes of additional time had been played\, but Nenagh CBS then had Brian O’Meara red-carded for an off-the-ball incident and referee Eamon Stapleton allowed another minute.  \nSt Raphael’s won the puckout and Killeen nailed an outstanding point from right on the sideline under intense pressure. \nReaching a first All-Ireland final in 20 years is all the more impressive again for a squad made up of just four clubs\, with two – Loughrea and Kiconeiron – accounting for 21 of the 30-man squad.  \nThis team is loaded with quality players while Raphael’s also had the outstanding player on the field in Sarsfields’ Paddy MacCárthaigh\, who ended with a huge haul of 0-8 from play. \nThis was a brilliant game. The conversion rates and levels of execution in such tricky conditions in the first half was off the charts\, with 20 scores from 25 shots. The second half was much more frantic but the dramatic ending was in synch with such an enthralling contest throughout. \nNenagh will be disappointed they couldn’t close out the match in such a commanding position\, especially when they were so used to doing so.  \nThe Galway side looked to have control in the third quarter but then they surrendered that initiative and spent the rest of the match desperately trying to get it back. \nNenagh appeared to have physically ground and worn them down in that fourth quarter\, but Raphael’s never panicked and had the class and composure to win the game with clever use of possession and ice-cold shooting.  \nThe stamp of their brilliant coach\, Franny Forde – who coached the Galway seniors to the 2017 All-Ireland – was smeared all over his side too. Even when the heat and pressure was like a furnace\, Raphael’s kept hurling and trying to do the right thing. \nRaphael’s showed that icy temperament from the first whistle in how well they were able to work and necklace the ball up through the pitch on their own short puckout. Four of their first six scores came from that source\, including their goal from Bobby Feeney in the sixth minute. \nNenagh weren’t tight or aggressive enough in their set-up or in the tackle but they pushed up more in the second quarter and began to shut down that threat.  \nAn Aodhan O’Connor goal in the 19th minute had given them some breathing space before an unanswered 1-3 in six minutes – all sourced off turnovers – left Nenagh ahead at the break by 3-8 to 1-8. \nRaphael’s thought\, had the deficit down to three inside four minutes\, before wiping it out by the 44th minute. Nenagh had to wait eight minutes for their first shot of the half\, and until the 41st minute for their first score.  \nRaphael’s had all the momentum but a delay stalled it and Nenagh gradually began to soak up their pressure\, hit more on the break\, run the ball through the centre and draw more frees.  \nAfter missing three placed balls early in the second half\, McCarthy finally found his range. \nMcCarthy was the only Nenagh player to score after half-time\, with all five of those scores coming from placed balls\, while six different Raphael’s players scored from play in that half.  \nStill\, Raphael’s had gone 15 minutes without a score before MacCárthaigh staunched the bleeding in the 61st minute. Raphael’s were still pressed hard against the ropes by then but their punches finally found a groove and a rhythm. That promotion push continues to be a “rollercoaster ride”. The Banner road back to Division 2 continues to throw up an unenjoyable amount of twists and turns. \nThe visitors to Rathkeale on Saturday evening appeared to have the two points on offer safely tucked away in the gearbag at half-time.  \nEven allowing for the stiffish breeze they’d face in the second period\, it was difficult to see Mark Fitzgerald’s charges failing to protect a nine-point interval advantage. \nIt was equally difficult to see Limerick lifting their efforts to such an extent that they were anywhere near capable of wiping out the 1-11 to 0-5 interval scoreline. \nLimerick reemerged a changed outfit. Winless and pointless and staring down the barrel of successive relegations\, they launched a defiant stand on their home patch. \nJames Naughton and Jamie Baynham fired the first shots of their comeback bid with back-to-back points inside 30 seconds of the restart. Two more followed from Naughton (free) and Cathal Downes to cut the gap to five on 40 minutes. \nThere followed a Manus Doherty point for the visitors. The corner-back’s punched effort was their sole white flag in the 25 minutes after half-time.  \nThey simply could not get their hands on possession\, and when they did\, they were incapable of holding onto it for any sufficient period of time. \nBarry Coleman (0-2)\, Naughton (free) and Cillian Fahy produced another four-in-a-row Limerick burst to leave the scoreboard reading 1-12 to 0-13 on 60 minutes. Limerick were aggressively chasing down an end to their winless and pointless state. \nThey did not\, however\, get any closer. \nCormac Murray’s volleyed white flag on the hour mark was arguably the most important score of this Division 3 derby. If lifted the siege. It allowed Clare to breathe.  \nThey secured possession from the resulting Limerick restart. Ciaran Downes fed Aaron Griffin. Another Clare point. \nAnd when full-forward Griffin brought his tally on this cold evening to four shortly after\, pushing Clare back out to five in front in the process (1-15 to 0-13)\, the Limerick comeback had crashed and was crushed. \nIt meant Mark Fitzgerald could breath a sigh of relief at another “rollercoaster ride” finishing with another two points secured. \nThe win moves Clare onto eight points\, level with both Down and Westmeath at the top of the Division 3 table. The latter pair are both in action on Sunday. \nThe turbulence and turnovers Clare endured in the second period were so far removed from an opening half where seven different players – Daniel Walsh\, Brian McNamara\, Dermot Coughlan\, Murray\, Downes\, Emmet McMahon\, and Griffin – pushed them 1-9 to 0-3 clear on 21 minutes. \nMidfield McNamara provided the goal\, while McMahon swung over three beauties from play with the right boot. \nLimerick goalkeeper Aaron O’Sullivan time and again was unable to find a green shirt from his kicking tee. Two short restarts resulted in white flags that could just as easily have been green. DESCRIPTION:Tipperary and Waterford finished level at 0-16 to 1-13 in Round 5 of the Allianz Football League Division 4 on Sunday March 3rd at Bansha. \n\nLate Waterford fightback against Tipperary earns first point of the National League \nAllianz Football League Division 4 \nTipperary 0-16 Waterford 1-13  \nReport by Michael Dundon for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nWaterford secured their first point of the National Football League when they swooped late to deprive a fancied Tipperary of a badly needed success at Bansha on Sunday. \nDespite a sub-standard first half\, at the end of which they trailed 0-7 to 1-8\, Tipperary raised their game after the break and when they hit the front (0-16 to 1-11) with a brace of Sean O Connor points in the 65th and 66th minutes\, it looked as though the home side would prevail. \nWaterford showed great fight however\, and Jason Curry was their hero converting a brace of frees in the 68th and 70th minutes to level and so break their duck in the campaign. \nIt was a result fully deserved by the Decies boys. They were by far the better team in the first half and with Curry a big threat in attack they were seven points clear of their rivals (1-8 to 0-4) after 27 minutes. Alan Dunwoody got their goal in the 19th minute punishing some slack defending by the home side. \nTipperary finished the half well with points from Jack Kennedy\, Paddy Creedon and James Morris but trailed 0-7 to 1-8 at the interval. The deficit flattered them\, an indication of manager Paul Kelly’s dissatisfaction being the introduction of four subs in the period\, only one for an injury\, that of Cathal Deely after 20 minutes. \nWaterford showed no sign of folding as Tipp raised their game in the second half. A brace of Paddy Creedon points brought the Premier boys level (0-13 to 1-10) after 58 minutes but Jason Currry restored Waterford’s lead in the 63rd minute. Back came Jack Kennedy to level for Tipp and when O Connor added two further points\, a Tipp win looked on the cards. \nHowever\, Waterford had other ideas and threw everything into attack with Curry their hero landing two frees in the 68th and 70th minutes for a deserved share of the spoils. \nThese sides meet again in the Munster championship in Dungarvan in April when Waterford will be hoping to put one over their rivals. Kildare were down four of last week’s team through injuries\, including three starting forwards in Darragh Kirwan\, Ben McCormack\, and Barry Kelly\, plus centre-back Kevin Flynn. \nBoth attacks struggled to manufacture shots into the opposition’s packed defences. Kildare only had seven into the first-half breeze but still led by the break\, 2-3 to 1-5. \nA Brian O’Driscoll snapshot got Cork up and running after a Brian Hurley turnover but the Lilywhites would hit the net with their first attempt after eight minutes. \nDaniel Flynn’s overhead flick kept the play alive and his mazy movement wrongfooted the covering defenders. He connected with Alex Beirne’s direct run and the centre-forward buried a low shot to the corner. It was Kildare’s first green flag of this League campaign\, followed by a pair of Kevin Feely points. \nHaving waited all spring for a goal\, Kildare had their second before long. \nIt came from a turnover and a speculative long ball\, which ran perfectly into Flynn’s path. He steered back onto his right to produce a clever near-post finish. 2-2 to 0-3 after 23 minutes. \nCork slowly began to produce a response\, led by their corner-backs. Kevin Flahive fly-kicked over the bar when played in on goal by Conor Corbett and his big hit started the move for Cork’s lifeline goal in the fourth added minute. \nIt was finished by the other corner-back\, Tommy Walsh\, at the end of a rapid counter-attack led by Matty Taylor. Just one point the difference at half-time. \nIf John Cleary’s half-time call to arms had the desired effect in last week’s victory over Fermanagh\, his words repeated the trick here. \nCork’s defence\, so passive in the first half\, tackled with renewed vigour. In attack\, they were kicking towering scores from all angles to tack on seven of the opening eight points. \nO’Driscoll had his third\, Conor Corbett and Brian Hurley both got off the mark with a pair\, and Colm O’Callaghan and Chris Óg Jones slotted stylish efforts. \nIn the 52nd minute\, they added a stunning goal. O’Callaghan soared backwards through the air to grab a diving mark. He was quickly to his feet to deliver a direct ball to Corbett\, who sent a rocket to the roof of the net. \nIt was 2-12 to 2-5 but Kildare pulled a goal back within a minute from the spot. DESCRIPTION:Tarbert Comprehensive (Kerry) defeated St Malachy’s Castlewellan (Down) by 3-19 to 4-13 after extra time in the 2024 Masita GAA Post Primary Schools ‘C’ Dr. Eamonn O Sullivan Cup Final on Saturday March 9th at Netwatch Dr. Cullen Park\, Carlow.  \n\nTarbert Comprehensive are All-Ireland SFC ‘C’ champions after extra-time win in rollercoaster final \nALL-IRELAND POST-PRIMARY SCHOOLS SFC ‘C’ FINAL \nTarbert Comprehensive 3-19 St Malachy’s\, Castlewellan (Down) 4-13 \n(after extra-time) \nReport by John O’Dowd at Cullen Park\, Carlow for the Kerryman newspaper \nIn the rollercoaster to top all rollercoasters\, Tarbert Comprehensive were forced to go from ecstasy to agony\, and back to ecstasy again\, before finally getting their hands on the Dr Eamonn O’Sullivan Cup following this absolute epic against St Malachy’s from Castlewellan. \nThis All-Ireland ‘C’ senior football final between the North Kerry school and their Down opponents turned into a game for the ages at Dr Cullen Park in Carlow\, with the eventual winners being put through the wringer before sealing an extra-time triumph. \nWhen John Coolahan rattled home Tarbert’s second goal in the 43rd minute\, their blistering third quarter burst had been given what appeared to be the coup de gras. From level pegging at the break to an eleven-point cushion\, 2-13 to 0-8\, the Kingdom representatives were home and dry. \nOr so everybody thought. Taidgh O’Hanlon’s green flag for St Malachy’s two minutes later was surely just a consolation score from the clearly rattled Mourne youngsters. Entering the final quarter\, they were eight points in arrears and\, to all intents and purposes\, with no way back. \nUnbelievably\, however\, a tiring Tarbert\, probably feeling that the destination of the spoils had been decided\, totally lost their control of the contest. Growing in stature\, with self-belief renewed\, and strengthening\, with each passing moment\, St Malachy’s were inspired. \nSubstitute Daire Treanor slotted home a crisp finish in the 50th minute\, and the gap was down to six. Then a mix-up in the Tarbert full-back line enabled a blossoming Eoghan Travers hammer the ball to the net from close range\, 2-14 to 3-8\, entering the closing minutes. \nIt was now the leaders who were feeling shell-shocked\, and it got even worse when the Castlewellan school\, amazingly\, struck for the fourth goal in 14 minutes\, through James Savage\, in the 59th minute. A pointed mark by Travers soon followed\, and\, beggaring belief\, St Malachy’s had hit the front. \nA 12-point swing had virtually taken place in the blink of an eye\, cutting Tarbert to the very core\, but they refused to die. First half goalscorer Jamie Moloney forced a ‘45’\, and outstanding captain Shaun Wren lofted over a superb placed ball to send this exhilarating affair to extra-time\, 2-15 to 4-9. \nThe North Kerry school had dug in\, commendably\, against the wind in the first half\, Moloney’s rebound green flag after Wren’s initial effort had been saved\, allowing them to retire at half-time on level terms\, 1-5 to 0-8\, against an opposition propelled forward by the excellence of Ruairi Madine. \nThe Kilcoo inside attacker had been a thorn in the side of Tarbert Comprehensive from the outset\, slotting over three points from play\, and seeing a superb individual goal controversially brought back for a free in\, in the 12th minute. John Coolahan had been similarly impressive at the other end. \nWith David Mulvihill switched onto Madine on the resumption\, and the likes of Paudie Finucane at midfield\, Patrick O’Connor\, Coolahan\, Wren and Caolam Moriarty sparkling up front\, Tarbert ruled the roost in the second half\, before that nerve-shredding late\, late collapse. \nHaving blown a seven-point lead in the semi-final against Ballymahon of Longford\, the North Kerry school were becoming used to nail-biting finales. How could they bounce back for extra-time on this occasion\, however? Momentum was well and truly with St Malachy’s. \nRoss Green\, Corey Trainor\, an improving O’Hanlon\, Christopher Kelly McEvoy\, Savage and Travers were now leading the way for the Down lads\, and the sides couldn’t be separated either after the first ten added minutes\, 2-18 to 4-12\, Tarbert substitute Tadhg O’Connell with the pick of the points. \nAs is typical of extra-time\, scores were now harder to come by\, with the pressure rising\, and the bodies beginning to wilt. It was going to take a moment of magic\, or a defensive mistake\, to finally break the deadlock. Or were we set to endure the torment of a penalty-shoot-out? \nThankfully\, for Tarbert Comprehensive\, John Coolahan took things by the scruff of the neck\, once and for all\, in the 76th minute. The towering Finucane caught a kick-out\, replacement Darragh Mullane supplied the assist\, and Coolahan did the rest\, with a bullet of a right-footer that Callum Travers didn’t even see. \nNow\, with a four-point advantage\, the winners were in no mood to commit another act of self-inflicted pain. Travers blasted over from close range for St Malachy’s but\, with Mulvihill minding the house expertly\, Tarbert’s game management was much\, much better on this occasion. \nWhen the final whistle was blown by referee David Hickey\, one group of players jumped to the sky in exultation\, the other side slumped to their knees in devastation. Such are the vagaries of sport. Such are the vagaries of a phenomenal\, evenly-matched All-Ireland decider. \nTo the victor\, the spoils\, and it was left to Wren to send the Tarbert Comprehensive supporters into raptures of joy\, when he accepted the winners’ trophy. DESCRIPTION:Kildare defeated Kerry by 1-21 to 1-14 in Round 4 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 2A on Saturday March 9th at Manguard Park\, Hawkfield. \n\nKildare secure first league win as they ease past Kerry \nAllianz League Division 2A \nKildare 1-21 Kerry 1-14  \nReport by Richard Commins for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nKildare deservedly recorded their first win of the Allianz League Division 2A campaign with a seven-point success over a disappointing Kerry in Manguard Park\, Hawkfield on Saturday afternoon. \nBrian Dowling’s side shrugged off the loss of top scorer Jack Sheridan\, with David Qualter deputising superbly for the Naas man on his first start after a long injury absence. \nJames Burke had already forced a fine save from Kerry goalkeeper Louis Dee when Maurice O’Connor put the visitors ahead with a second minute free\, but Kildare soon got on top and were never headed again. \nWith Simon Leacy brilliantly sweeping at the back\, and sending Kildare forward\, Qualter\, Burke and dangerous corner-forward Cian Boran kept the scoreboard operator busy\, and they were 0-10 to 0-7 ahead coming towards half-time. \nBut Kerry hit back with a superbly finished goal from O’Connor in the 34th minute\, the centre-forward finishing to the roof of Paddy McKenna’s net from Daithí Griffin’s pass. \nBurke’s point sent Kildare into the interval ahead and they took a firm grip seven minutes into the second half. \nBurke was held by full-back Evan Murphy in attempting to gather Simon Leacy’s long delivery with referee Seán Cleere pointing to the spot. Barry Murphy was a late addition in midfield. \nLiam Cahill opted for 11 changes from the experimental side that defeated Westmeath. Morris and Eoghan Connolly were back from injuries to start\, as was half-time replacement Bryan O’Mara\, although Mark Kehoe missed out. \nIt was a first half with defences on top as savage work rate met short-passing moves. A swirling wind posed further problems\, with as many shots missed as scored in the first half. \nGearóid O’Connor and Jason Forde were carrying the Tipp effort\, splitting their opening four points between them. Forde would finish with 1-7 to his name. \nLimerick only scored twice from play in the opening 30 minutes\, via Donnacha Ó Dálaigh\, who was battling to shake change out of Michael Breen\, and Lynch. While Diarmaid Byrnes was wrestling with the wind\, Aaron Gillane popped his five close-range frees. \nTipp missed a handful of frees from distance\, too\, as their entire first-half total came from play. \nOn the half-hour\, they had the opening goal. A superb sideline cut from O’Connor found Forde loitering behind and the Silvermines sharp-shooter batted the sliotar over Nickie Quaid. \n\nFirst Half Tipperary goal by Jason Forde \n\nGOAL! @TipperaryGAA sideline played into Jason Forde who takes on his man and finishes expertly #GAANOW pic.twitter.com/8wDVZohGUJ \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) March 9\, 2024 \n  \n\nThey led by five\, 1-7 to 0-5\, but Limerick had more than cancelled out the goal by half-time with the final four points from Byrnes\, two Gillane frees\, and Gearóid Hegarty. \nThe whistle came at a good time for Tipperary\, still ahead by one\, 1-7 to 0-9. \nThey re-emerged with the opening two points from Forde and Alan Tynan\, although they suffered a major blow when Kennedy pulled up with a knee injury as he checked his run. \nThe influence of Limerick’s half-back line was growing all the while with Cathal O’Neill pulling the strings from centre-back and Colin Coughlan getting off three early shots\, converting two. \nIn the 49th minute\, they took the lead for the first time as Ó Dálaigh smartly finished a quick sideline before Gillane added his first from play. The in-form Ó Dálaigh was rising to the occasion\, arrowing over a lovely individual point before turning over possession for Lynch to point. \nMike Casey burst forward to add his name to the scoresheet but just as it all seemed to be falling into place for Limerick\, Tipp struck back. \nPatrick Maher didn’t give up on a lost cause\, flicking the sliotar out of Coughlan’s grasp and dashing for goal to unleash a bullet past Quaid. Robert Downey\, who struck 0-3\, stood out in a well drilled defence that denied Offaly their first win of the season and held the hosts to just five points from open play. \nIt’s Cork’s biggest win of the campaign following losses to Clare and Kilkenny in the opening rounds and leaves them safe in the knowledge that a win over Wexford next Saturday will secure a top-three finish at least in the table and top tier hurling in 2025. \nRock bottom Offaly will host Clare in their final round game in Birr on Saturday. \nCork changed almost two thirds of their team from the narrow Round 3 defeat of Waterford. \nThere were eight changes in the official lineup with recalls for goalkeeper Patrick Collins\, defenders Niall O’Leary\, Eoin Downey and Robert Downey\, Brian Roche and Luke Meade at midfield and forwards Connolly and Dalton while Tim O’Mahony was a late change to the scheduled team\, replacing captain Ciaran Joyce. \nCork’s half-back line immediately took control and with Robert Downey particularly dominant on the left wing\, they had a platform to launch attack after attack. \nThey finished up with 2-12 in all in the first-half though they had five more wides on top of that and two attempts that dropped short. \nConnolly racked up 2-1 by the interval and his first goal\, in the 20th minute\, left Cork with a 1-7 to 0-3 lead and went a long way towards killing the contest even at that early stage. \nO’Mahony fetched well and delivered a long ball into the danger zone for the first goal while Conor Lehane helped set up the second. It wasn’t over yet as Kilkenny rallied\, only to see scrambled efforts from Mikey Butler and TJ Reid both prevented by goalkeeper Eamonn Foudy before Shane Murphy fired agonisingly wide of the post. \nBeing in the ascendency for the majority\, Clare just about merited their latest victory and can take great heart from what was a more experimental side than their opponents as only eight of the 18 that faced the Cats in Croke Park were in action in contrast to eleven from the visitors. \nThe returning TJ Reid was as talismanic as ever\, helped in the scoring stakes by Paddy Deegan in the opening period and substitute John Donnelly after the break. \nHowever\, a more balanced Banner cold boast eight different scorers including an impressive five points from play for the elusive David Fitzgerald. \nPlaying into the breeze\, the home side warmed to their task with four of the first five points as Peter Duggan\, Mark Rodgers\, Conor Leen and David Reidy catapulted their side into the lead. \nKilkenny kept in touch through Reid’s placed balls which contrasted five missed frees for Clare through three different takers. \nKilkenny capitalised to finally regain parity by the 33rd minute after a four point unanswered rally\, two from Reid\, only for the hosts to finally find their range as Aidan McCarthy converted a brace of injury-time frees to ensure a 0-11 to 0-9 interval edge. \nThe second half proved equally as compelling as these sides went blow for blow for the majority. Mark Fanning made a magnificent second half save from Neil Montgomery. \nA late Waterford fightback fell short. Jamie Barron shot four points from play\, Calum Lyons and Jack Prendergast scored three each while Padraig Fitzgerald got 1-2 on his introduction. Davy Fitzgerald’s side registered thirteen wides and will ply their trade in Division 1B next season. \nThree-time All Star Barron made his first start of 2024 for the home side. The Deise made six changes from the loss to Cork. Wexford All Star Lee Chin missed out with a hamstring injury. \nWaterford raced five points up after nine minutes. Midfielder Paddy Leavey was put in the unfamiliar role of free taker and knocked over two from long distance. Jack Prendergast\, Michael Kiely and Shane Bennett (free) also raised white flags. \nSeamus Casey got Wexford off the mark with an eleventh minute free. Jamie Barron marked his return to the starting fifteen with a point before Casey replied. Shane Reck cut in along the end line and laid off to Casey who clipped the Waterford post. \nTwo more Jamie Barron singles from the stand sideline kept the home team five in front. On 20 minutes\, a Shaun O’Brien short puckout then went awry and Cian Byrne punished it with his second point. Wexford won the next long lockout and Conor Hearne split open the Deise defence and batted the ball past O’Brien (0-9 to 1-5). Hearne pushed Mark Fitzgerald into the post after he scored the goal and Colm Lyons flashed a yellow card. \nWaterford cancelled out the goal quickly with points from Bennett (free)\, Calum Lyons and Jack Prendergast. Shane Bennett and Casey traded frees before a solo run from Shane Reck set up Kevin Foley for the equaliser. Matthew O’Hanlon punched the air when he sent the purple and gold ahead on 48 minutes. Cian Byrne fired over his fifth from play. \nOn 52 minutes\, a high ball from Seamus Casey landed in the Waterford net as Simon Donohue followed it in (2-19 to 0-19). The Deise went back up the other end as half time sub Neil Montgomery was denied by a spectacular save from Mark Fanning. Montgomery flicked the rebound over the bar. Donohue sent Wexford seven points ahead. \nWith ten minutes left\, Waterford sub Padraig Fitzgerald intercepted a back pass from Niall Murphy and planted the sliotar past Mark Fanning (2-21 to 1-20). The other sides\, Clare and Waterford\, meet on Saturday afternoon. The top two from the group will progress into another group phase\, involving Kerry and Cork. It appears to be a welcomed addition of competitive football\, with the knockout format doing little for the progression of football outside of the ‘top two’ in Munster. \nSince winning the U21 provincial title in 2015\, The Premier have managed just two wins (both in 2021)\, at this grade. Limerick have had their struggles too\, though they defeated Waterford in 2023. \nRising Limerick senior star\, Emmet Rigter\, curled over the opening score inside two minutes\, this one of four frees the Treaty would score in a wasteful opening half. Kicking five wides\, Shane Kelly also say his men drop plenty short as they struggled to negotiate Tipp’s deep lying defence. \nA bizarre and perhaps fortunate goal from the left food of Darragh McVicker put Niall Fitzgerald’s men ahead. His effort\, with his weaker left foot\, dipped into the net after five minutes. \nRigter replied with Limerick’s sole point from play in the opening half. Orrin Jones\, Joseph Lawrence and McVicker helped open up a four-point Tipp lead. \nThe half drew to a close with a black card to Ballina’s Charlie King. He felled Murray who was rampaging through the middle. Ronan Quirke slotted the free\, before Lawrence replied. The home side led 1-4 to 0-5 at the interval. \nA tremendous finish from Orrin Jones pushed Tipperary five clear on 33\, but the visitors didn’t give in. \nA superb second half from Ronan Quirke was arguably why Limerick got a result. His four points from play in an old-school full-forward role saw his side push ahead with six unanswered points. \nHowever\, subs Daithi Hogan and Paddy O’Keeffe swung the pendulum once more but the final say went to Hynes who curled over to tie the game. Clare. \n\nFlying Flanagan leads Newport to All Ireland title at the expense of Colaiste Einde Galway \nAll Ireland Senior D hurling final \nSt Mary’s\, Newport 6-17 Colaiste Einde\, Galway 1-7 \nReport by Michael O’Connor for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nA whirlwind start for Munster champions St Mary’s Newport that produced (2-3) in the opening ten minutes was the foundation that saw the Niall McInerney cup make its way to Newport on Saturday afternoon after they overcome Colaiste Einde from Galway city. \nA four goal salvo from joint captain Shane Flanagan\, who was well supported by colleagues Brian Tobin\, Tommy Cusack and Darren Collophy\, were the key reasons for Colaiste Einde’s inability to bridge the scoring gap between the two sides. \nDarren Collopy and Shane Flanagan in the fifth and ninth minutes respectively were the Newport goalscorers while Cillian Collins (2) and Brian Tobin were the point scorers and Cian Corcoran was the sole scoring threat from frees in the opening 20 minutes for Colaiste Einde. \nAfter 25 minutes Colaiste Einde had stifled the Newport attack but could not hit the goals their challenge really needed to back up their effort as Newport led 2-6 to 0-5. \nThe final five minutes of the opening half witnessed four further Newport scores from Tommy Cusack (2)\, Cillian Collins and Brian Tobin to hold a commanding 2-10 to 0-5 half time advantage. \nThe physical power of Colaiste Einde\, possessed by the Walshs up front\, was of no real advantage as the pace and first touch of Newport ensured no let up to the pressure on the Colaiste Einde defence.  \nCian Corcoran had the opening score of the second period before Callum Poole and Cillian Collins set up Shane Flanagan for his side’s third goal after 34 minutes. \nEvan Duffy in the Newport goal had to be smart to clear off his line after 39 minutes as did Jason McDonagh in the Colaiste Einde goal minutes later. Dublin. \n\nEarly Garron Tower blitz gives Blackwater Lismore too much to do \nAll-Ireland Senior Schools B hurling final: St Killian’s Garron Tower (Antrim) 4-13 Blackwater CS\, Lismore (Waterford) 0-13  \nReport by Séamus McAleenan for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nTHREE goals in the opening 12 minutes set Blackwater Community School from Waterford an almost impossible task in this Masita Paddy Buggy Cup in Abbottstown on Saturday afternoon and a physically powerful St Killian’s Garron Tower emphatically completed the season on a high in winning the Danske Bank Mageean Cup for the first time in 60 years. \nRuairí Óg Cushendall wonder kid Joseph McLaughlin\, who has already featured for Antrim seniors against Dublin and Galway this spring\, led the Garron Tower charge\, but his half-forward colleague Cormac McKeown picked up the Player of the Match award to add to the one he collected in the provincial final. \nOran McCambridge\, with two of those opening three goals\, was another to worry the Lismore defence\, while at the other end the St Killian’s corner-backs John Scullion and Colla Ward closed out the threat of Stephen Murphy and Ben O’Sullivan. \nJoseph McDonnell\, Joseph O’Keefe and Jake Henley got on a lot of ball\, but the gap the Tower opened in the first 12 minutes was just too much for the Waterford side to close. \nMcLaughlin hit the opening goal in the second minute\, finishing a fine move involving Cormac McKeown and Oran McCambridge. Worse was to follow two minutes later when a high ball from Callagh Mooney was taken down for McCambridge to find the net. The third goal in the 12th minute was quite similar with McKeown’s high delivery dropping in on the Lismore goalie and McCambridge diverted it over the line. \nBlackwater hit a decent spell with four unanswered points between the 20th and 27th minutes\, but St Killian’s finished the half strongly with points from McCambridge and McKeown (two) and the Ulster champions led by 3-8 to 0-6 at half-time. \nLismore started the second half with three points inside six minutes from Charlie Lineen\, Joe O’Keefe and a Cummins free\, before McLaughlin landed three points in reply to get St Killian’s back on course. Although Murphy\, Adam Cummins and O’Keefe then found the range\, the gap was still 3-12 to 0-12 with 54 minutes gone. \nThe north Antrim side then slammed the door shut with a lightning move that put Orrin O’Connor through for their fourth goal. \nFrustration led to two late red cards for the Munster champions. DESCRIPTION:Cork defeated Meath by 1-15 to 1-11 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 2 on Saturday March 16th at Páirc Tailteann\, Navan. \n\nCork finish with a flourish in Navan to maintain upward momentum \nAllianz FL Division 2: Meath 1-11 Cork 1-15  \nReport by John Fogarty for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nCork scored the last seven points of this affair in Páirc Tailteann to secure victory and in turn their Division 2 status. \nWhether it will be enough to ensure their passage into the Sam Maguire Cup remains to be seen but they were resurgent in the closing stages having trailed Meath by three points in the 56th minute. \nSteven Sherlock produced three points from the bench as Cork\, fresh from their training camp in Portugal last week\, illustrated their superior fitness and character to claim a third straight win to move into fourth spot in Division 2. \nTwo Conor Corbett points opened up the second half for Cork. Between them\, a goal beckoned when Seán Powter honed in on goal but his hand-pass intended for Brian Hurley at the back post was cut out by Daithí McGowan. \nA couple of converted placed balls restored parity for Meath before Powter punched another hole in their rearguard and put the visitors a point ahead in the 50th minute. \nMathre Costello then turned the game on its head. Catching a ball above his marker Daniel O’Mahony\, he sent over his second point of the game and then repeated the trick seconds later for his 54th-minute goal\, taking receipt of a diagonal ball from Shane Walsh to put Meath ahead for the first time since the early exchanges. \nHowever\, Cork’s finish was resounding. A brace of points from Luke Fahy began the fightback in earnest and Corbett’s second point levelled the game in the 65th minute. Sherlock\, Mattie Taylor and Mark Cronin all got in on the scoring act and Cork weren’t going to be beaten. \nMeath were cut open far too easily in the fifth minute when Brian O’Driscoll found Conor Corbett who delivered a composed\, low finish to the net despite being off balance and coming under pressure. \nIt was the first of a few goal openings for John Cleary’s side in a first half that was pockmarked by awful ball handling and sloppy passes. Conditions were tricky but not so much as to mitigate the basics being butchered. \nMeath themselves had a three-point opportunity in the 10th minute but Shane Walsh fired wide after Kevin Flahive passed the ball to him\, one of six they put either side of Christopher Kelly’s goal in the opening half. \nPoints by Hurley and Chris Óg Jones\, a breakaway point similar to Cork’s first goal against Kildare two weeks ago\, put them three up in the 20th minute and Hurley restored that cushion in the 24th following a Ruairí Kinsella score. \nCork went four up less than two minutes later when O’Driscoll ensured Cork had something for a counterattack move that threatened to end with Donal Keogan blocking down a Hurley strike at goal. \nHowever\, most of the second quarter belonged to Meath as they claimed the last four scores of the half. All of them were from distance\, two in a row from Eoghan Frayne\, Walsh’s first and Seán Brennan’s second converted 45 of the game squared matters going into the interval. \nScorers for Meath: M. DESCRIPTION:Wicklow defeated Limerick by 0-9 to 0-8 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 3 on Saturday March 16th at Echelon Park\, Aughrim. \n\nWicklow hold off Limerick to keep survival hopes alive \nReport By Brendan Lawrence for RTE.ie \nThe win that Wicklow were desperately seeking since the start of this Division 3 campaign arrived amid savage drama when they toppled Limerick by 0-09 to 0-08 at Echelon Park Aughrim on Saturday afternoon. \nThe tension at the death when Jimmy Lee’s charges came hunting for at least a levelling score\, if not a match-winning goal\, will be remembered by those who braved the heavy drizzle to watch Oisin McConville’s side give themselves every chance of preserving their league status. \nThe win and Antrim’s defeat in Clare means that the Garden County travel to Corrigan Park next weekend knowing that victory over the Saffrons will see them remain in Division 3\, a prospect that has looked unlikely at various stages of this campaign. \nWicklow headed to the dressing room at the break with a 0-06 to 0-02 lead having played against the breeze\, Limerick’s scores coming from the boot of impressive netminder Josh Ryan (two frees)\, the Treaty men coming up against a capable defence marshalled by Malachy Stone\, Tom Moran and Eoin Murtagh. \nAt the other end\, Kevin Quinn enjoyed a very positive day\, while Gavin Fogarty and Darragh Fee were constantly sniping and capable of damage. \nQuinn opened the scoring from a free after three\, but it would be 15 minutes later before Dean Healy bagged their second with the home side registering two wides and having a stunning JP Nolan point chalked off due to a player stepping onto the field when taking a sideline in the lead up to the score. \nThe lofty Josh Ryan also plucked a fine Kevin Quinn effort out of the sky at least two feet above his own crossbar\, while Jimmy Lee’s men would prove wasteful in front of the posts themselves\, clocking five wides in the opening 35. \nFogarty scored what might be Wicklow’s score of the league after 18 minutes\, getting on the end of a flying move started by Paddy O’Keane. Numerous Limerick frees were moved in for backchat and petulance\, and Josh Ryan converted one of these for the Treaty’s opener. \nWicklow replied through Matt Nolan and a Quinn free before Dean Healy drifted over a beautiful effort off the outside of his right boot. \nWith 27 gone\, Healy was shown a black card by Cavan official Pat Clarke\, but Limerick could only add to their lead through another Ryan free to leave it 0-06 to 0-02 at the break with Wicklow having the benefit of the elements in the second half. \nLimerick were far superior in the second half\, the introduction of Bryan Nix playing a big part in that\, the Newcastlewest man bringing a serious energy and ambition to proceedings. \nThe visitors popped over two points from the boots of Cillian Fahy and Robbie Childs (mark) while Wicklow would drop two efforts short and kick two wides in the opening 19 minutes of the second half. \nThe drought was ended when Kevin Quinn blasted over after being picked out by a dreamy Chris O’Brien ball following a Wicklow theft of possession with Josh Ryan way up the field. The Blessington man will know he should have had a goal. \nO’Brien swung over a wicked score from distance\, but Limerick hit back through Ryan (free)\, but Wicklow came within inches of a major when Healy’s missile from deep towards an open goal crashed back off the crossbar as Ryan scampered back to his line. \nSubstitute Oisin McGraynor made it 0-09 to 0-06 for the home side after 70 minutes but Limerick came powering back into the game with points from James Naughton (free) and Bryan Nix to leave just a point between the sides deep into the four minutes of time added on. \nBack came Limerick\, their pressure on Shane Doyle’s kick-outs relentless\, but a foul on the ball deep in Wicklow territory led to a free out and the final whistle sounded soon after much to the joy of McConville and his players. \nThe Armaghman has said that one win could turn their season around. DESCRIPTION:Cork defeated Wexford by 3-21 to 1-15 in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Saturday March 16th at Chadwicks Wexford Park. \n\nPositives for Cork but no semi-final place despite defeat of limp Wexford  \nAllianz HL Division 1: Cork 3-21 Wexford 1-15 \nReport by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nSlim pickings in the south east. \nA blitzkrieg opening half bought Cork a third consecutive League win. It bought them little else\, though. \nKilkenny’s victory over the road in Walsh Park meant Cork were unsuccessful in attempting to jump from fourth to second in the table and securing themselves a semi-final spot in the process. \nCushioning the not so significant blow of missing out on the League’s knockout stages was another Alan Connolly hat-trick\, 12 different scorers\, more match minutes into Darragh Fitzgibbon on his first start of the year\, and a most assertive showing from Ciarán Joyce at the heart of the visiting rearguard. \nOut the gap at half-time when leading 2-13 to 0-6\, Cork’s urgency and intensity waned considerably at the change of ends. They clipped only three points in the 23 minutes after half-time\, Brian Hayes accounting for two of that minuscule third quarter total. \nAlan Connolly\, having been denied a third goal on three occasions throughout the second period\, eventually got his hat-trick in the first minute of injury-time. A black card Eoin Ryan foul on Shane Barrett delivered Cork a penalty which Connolly just about squeezed past Mark Fanning. \nCork began like a team hell-bent on reaching a League semi-final. Or at the very least positioning themselves as prominently as they could for a last-four berth. \nWexford\, on the other hand\, started and continued like a team who couldn’t care less about the League semi-finals. Their level of disinterest in maintaining their unbeaten start to 2024 was baffling. \nThe hosts were so inexplicably abject from the off. Even outside of their dreadful shooting\, which included three wides and three more short inside the opening 10 minutes\, their decision-making and first touch were terrible. \nOn 27 minutes\, Darragh Carley took possession on his own 45-metre line. There was only one Wexford player to aim at inside the opposition 45. Carley dillied and dallied. The crowd groaned impatiently. The inaction greatly irked them. \nCarley eventually hit a crossfield ball to Kevin Foley. Foley\, though\, ran out over the sliotar and Cork promptly secured the turnover. \nCork\, in every facet\, were sharper. None were sharper than Connolly. After his 3-1 outing against Offaly\, Connolly continued to remind hurling folk what Cork had been missing in recent seasons. He had 2-2 scribbled beside his name by half-time. \nHis opening goal arrived 80 seconds in. Patrick Horgan played the ball across the large parallelogram\, Connolly swept to the net. His opening major came part of an unanswered 1-3 from the visitors by the fifth minute. \nConnolly’s second on 26 minutes was another piece of collaboration from the north and southside of the city. Eoin Downey launched the delivery\, Horgan got a touch\, and Connolly applied the finish. \nCork had seven different names on their interval scoresheet\, including goalkeeper Patrick Collins and the half-back pair of Joyce and Rob Downey. \nThey were untroubled in building from the back and could have added another two green flags as Connolly flashed wide and ‘keeper Mark Fanning – one of only three Wexford scorers in the opening half – deflected away a Hoggy drive. \nHaving hit seven wides in the opening half\, Wexford continued their wayward ways in the second period. Derek Lyng lost All Star defender Mikey Butler to an ankle injury while Mikey Carey hobbled off with a hamstring problem. \nPatrick Curran and Dessie Hutchinson netted first-half goals for Waterford as Davy Fitzgerald’s men mixed their game between short and long. It’s a fourth straight defeat for the Déise ahead of their Munster championship opener against Cork on April 21. \nHutchinson made his first start of 2024 for the home side. Kilkenny boss Derek Lyng went with ten of the team that lined out in the All-Ireland final defeat to Limerick last July. \nOn a grey afternoon\, Cats captain Paddy Deegan won the toss and elected to play with the wind. Full forward Luke Hogan scored two points and got fouled for a free which TJ Reid converted (0-3 to 0-0). At the other end\, Eoin Murphy saved from Patrick Curran after Calum Lyons made a defence-splitting run. Shane Bennett slotted a free for Waterford. \nIn the eighth minute\, Bennett mishit a 65 but Patrick Curran flicked the sliotar to the Kilkenny net (1-1 to 0-3). Jamie Barron added a point. \nAll-Star defender Mikey Butler limped off with 11 minutes on the clock. \nThe Kilkenny full forward line caused problems as Martin Keoghan supplied a point for Eoin Cody. \nOn 14 minutes\, Paddy Leavey sent a ball into Shane Bennett. The Ballysaggart man shrugged off two black and amber defenders before he offloaded to Dessie Hutchinson who fired home (2-2 to 0-4). \nMark Fitzgerald then blocked a Cian Kenny attempt at goal. Peter Hogan hooked Kevin Blanchfield before Martin Keoghan blasted over. Dessie Hutchinson split the uprights from a tight angle before a slick short passing move was finished by Mark Fitzgerald (2-4 to 0-5). ‘Davy\, Davy\, Davy’ cheered a group of young fans in the stand. \nThe incessant rain saw the pitch start to cut up. Points from TJ Reid (free)\, John Donnelly and Kevin Blanchfield. reduced the arrears to two at the break (2-5 to 0-9). \nWater splashed up off the surface throughout the second half. Eoin Cody made it a one-point game within two minutes of the resumption. Another flowing Waterford move was finished by Jack Prendergast. TJ Reid slotted a free before Shane Bennett nailed a beauty from the stand sideline (2-7 to 0-11). \nWaterford were penalised for steps three times in the second half\, much to the frustration of Fitzgerald and his management team. Reid’s fourth free and Cody’s third from play levelled matters by the 51st minute. \nJamie Barron then sent Neil Montgomery through on goal and the Déise sub was only a whisker away from raising a green flag. Eoin Murphy brought down Shane Bennett after a misplaced pass in the Kilkenny defence. Bennett converted the subsequent free. \nAt the opposite end\, Darragh Lyons brought down Adrian Mullen. Lyons got a yellow and TJ Reid edged Kilkenny 0-15 to 2-8 in front. The seven-time All Star converted another as Shane Bennett and Padraig Fitzgerald were off-target for the hosts. \nInjury-time singles from substitute Billy Ryan and top scorer TJ Reid sealed a hard fought away victory. DESCRIPTION:Clare defeated Offaly by 0-23 to 1-19 in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Saturday March 16th at Grant Heating St. Brendan’s Park Birr.  \n\nShadow Clare side sneak victory over tired Offaly \nAllianz HL Division 1A: Clare 0-23 Offaly 1-19 \nReport by Ciaran Burns for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nClare came away from Birr on Saturday with a smash-and-grab victory against an Offaly team who led for virtually the entire game\, but just about failed to hang on in the closing minutes.  \nClare travelled with a shadow team\, their place in the league semi-finals secured\, and Offaly will rue their failure to take a golden chance to get one over their visitors and post a second positive result in this division\, following on from their draw with Wexford. \nOffaly won many of the opening exchanges and started to get the small crowd into the game. Jack Clancy got on the end of a sharp pass by Eimhin Kelly before beating Eibhear Quilligan in the Clare goal from close range\, really bringing the home audience to life. \nEoghan Cahill impressed from dead balls\, notching five frees and a 65  before half-time\, while Clare were far less clinical from their own chances\, with seven wides before the break. Offaly\, meanwhile\, kept their misses tally to just three. \nTrailing by 1-12 to 0-9 at the break\, Clare didn’t take long to exert their dominance over a tiring Offaly side. Against Kilkenny\, the Faithful men saw a big lead reeled in within ten minutes\, but here it was more gradual\, building to a dramatic finale. \nClare’s forwards came alive from the restart and began to put Offaly on the back foot. Ian Galvin and Patrick Crotty scored seven from play between them and Offaly did just enough to stay at this pace before beginning to flag as the game entered the final quarter. \nWith ten minutes left\, Offaly held a one-goal advantage at 1-18 to 0-18 but they struggled to make good use of their puckouts\, with Clare swallowing up any space around the middle. Rory Hayes and Paddy Donnellan scored two consecutive points from play to narrow the gap to a single point. \nOffaly looked tired but a positive result should have been within their control. They squandered two scoreable chances before Clare equalised through a David Reidy free. DESCRIPTION:Tipperary defeated Antrim by 2-21 to 0-12 in Round 5 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Saturday March 16th at Corrigan Park Belfast. \n\nForde and Morris steer Tipperary into league semi-final clash with Clare \nAllianz HL Division 1B Antrim 0-12 Tipperary 2-21  \nReport by David Mohan for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nIT all went to script for Tipperary in Belfast on Saturday as they claimed the win they needed to move into a League semi-final next week. \nIt wasn’t a vintage performance by Liam Cahill’s side\, but nonetheless they did what was required with Jason Forde landing a dozen points between frees and play\, while Jake Morris rattled the home net in each half. \nThe draw between Galway and Limerick ensured any type of victory for Tipp would suffice for a place in the semi-finals and there was no danger of anything but that outcome as they held the upper hand across the board. \nAntrim just didn’t have enough going forward to keep pace with the visitors despite being full of endeavour and their campaign ends in a whitewash with five defeats. But they will now look to build into the Championship where they will hope to have their lengthy list of injuries begin to clear. \nAodhán O’Brien actually gave Antrim the initial lead\, but Sean Kenneally replied instantly. \nAn O’Brien free cancelled out Jason Forde’s first of the day\, but this would be as good as it got for the Saffrons with Tipp rattling off the next five scores with Forde dead-eyed from placed balls\, while Kenneally grabbed his second and Jake Morris found his range. \nO’Brien was Antrim’s sole scorer in the opening period\, adding another pair of frees as Eoghan Connolly got in on the act for the visitors\, who weren’t exactly setting the world alight either. \nThe hosts had a let-off when carved open for the first time after 29 minutes when a goal seemed certain but play was brought back for a throw. There would be no such reprieve minutes later as Conor Stakelum made the burst forward and popped into Morris to finish\, while Forde’s sixth of the first half put the Premier into a 1-10 to 0-4 lead. \nForde and O’Brien traded pointed frees straight after the restart and the pair would continue to lead the way in the scoring stakes\, both doubling their half-time tally. DESCRIPTION:Omagh CBS defeated Mercy Mounthawk by 3-14 to 0-11 in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Hogan Cup Football Final on Saturday March 16th at Croke Park. \n\nDynamite Donnelly inspires holders Omagh CBS to emphatic Hogan Cup success over Mercy Mounthawk \nHogan Cup final: Omagh CBS 3-14 Mercy Mounthawk 0-11  \nReport by John O’Dowd for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nWith an emphatic second half performance\, inspired by the brilliance of midfielder Charlie Donnelly\, Omagh CBS retained the Hogan Cup in clinical style\, comprehensively dispatching Mercy Mounthawk in the All-Ireland Colleges senior ‘A football final at Croke Park. \nWhen the defending champions only took a one-point lead to the interval (0-7 to 0-6)\, and would start the second half with influential centre-forward Ruairí McCullagh in the sin-bin\, the destination of the spoils appeared to be in the melting pot. \nHowever\, the Tralee school couldn’t raise a gallop on the resumption\, hindering their own assault on the title with terrible defensive errors that proved to be so\, so costly. As the Mounthawk mistakes mounted up\, Omagh CBS were in no mood to look a gift horse in the mouth. \nA handling error by Mercy Mounthawk corner-back James Fisher allowed Omagh full-forward Paudí Dillon to blast home his side’s first goal in the 40th minute and\, six minutes later\, came the second hammer blow for the Kingdom representatives. \nOn this occasion\, after initially preventing Dillon from finding the net again\, Michael Tansley saving from point-blank range\, wing-back Pádraig O’Halloran’s intended hand-pass to a team-mate was cleverly intercepted by the returning McCullagh\, who easily slotted home. \nNow eight points adrift (2-9 to 0-7) heading into the last quarter\, there was no way back for Mercy Mounthawk. However\, despite letting an eight-point cushion slip to just three by the relieving sound of the final whistle\, Mark Fitzgerald’s side\, who even had a numerical advantage for over half the tie\, now head to Down next weekend with something tangible to play for in the promotion stakes alongside their hosts and Westmeath. \nAn early trio of Ciaran Downes frees opened up an early gap for the Banner at 0-4 to 0-1 but the real drama was saved for the last ten minutes of the half. An off-the-ball knee on marker Gavin Murray brought a clear red card for Antrim midfielder Colm McLarnon. That was sandwiched by a sequence of home points as Cormac Murray\, Aaron Griffin\, Mark McInerney and Dermot Coughlan boosted Clare to a seemingly unassailable 0-9 to 0-3 interval advantage. \nVisiting goalkeeper Michael Byrne kept Antrim’s slim comeback hopes alive by keeping out an early Joe McGann shot but he did point the rebound before earning a free for Mark McInerney to convert and power the hosts to an 0-11 to 0-3 lead by the 40th minute. \nIt should have been game over but typifying the majority of their previous encounters\, Fitzgerald’s side inexplicably took their foot off the gas. It allowed a Patrick McBride-inspired Antrim to somehow creep back into contention. \nThree McBride points began the rousing rally that ended up outscoring their hosts by 0-9 to 0-3 in the last 30 minutes\, with impact substitute Ryan McQuillan scoring two points. He could easily could have snatched a late goal\, only for his 69th-minute effort to clear the crossbar. \nAll well that ends well for Clare who despite their inconsistency within games\, have managed to dig out results. Roscommon fighting for their Division 1 lives in front of a healthy 6\,464 home crowd. \nInstead\, Kerry masterfully navigated their way into the eye of it and resided there comfortably for the duration of the contest. \nBillowing sheets of rain greeted Kerry’s management for their pre-game walk of the pitch. Fencing in front of the renovation work at the main stand came crashing down. \nIf Kerry had any sense of foreboding about this task\, they channelled it seamlessly. \nRoscommon won the toss and elected to play with the stiff breeze first\, so Kerry won the throw-in and kept the ball for the opening three minutes. \nEventually Joe O’Connor raced along the endline and fisted over for the perfect start. The breeze did the home side no favours\, as they struck six wides in the opening half hour. \nThankfully\, the rain subsided before the throw-in and stayed away for the afternoon. \nIn the first half\, Jack O’Connor’s side made hay. They led 0-8 to 0-4 at the turnaround without a single wide from play. \nThe only blemishes were a David Clifford penalty skied over the bar and an uncharacteristically wayward Sean O’Shea free. \nThe Kenmare Shamrocks star should truly have had a goal\, but referee Noel Mooney elected to award a penalty for a David Murray pull after O’Shea had bundled a short Darragh Roche shot into the goal. \nO’Connor’s charges deserve credit for maintaining control on a fixture that was liable to swirl away from them. \nThat humbling Croke Park hammering at the hands of Dublin has not sent them into a spiral. \nAfterwards\, the Kerry boss was asked if that defeat was a blip. He was in no mood to go that far\, but he did suggest that they can try make it count down the road. \n“That was an alarming enough performance\,” O’Connor said. “You wouldn’t dismiss that one at all. If it helps us improve and makes us revisit a few issues\, it might be a positive in the long term. \n“Look\, any day you get a beating like that isn’t a good day.” \nWhat have they changed? \n“A few failings were shown up and we have done a bit of work on them since. \n“It remains to be seen — we will have bigger tests than today\, I’m sure. For today\, it was adequate.” \nKerry’s conversion was an impressive 70% yesterday. \nThey turned down possible goal opportunities\, such as an O’Shea free that hit the post and dropped in the square\, in favour of simple points. \nHaving gone man-on-man against the All-Ireland champions\, against Roscommon it was a nominated sweeper depending on who was freed up first. A spell early on saw Paudie Clifford\, Gavin White\, and Joe O’Connor man the top of the D for successive plays. \nIt is still liable to breaches if a defender is soundly beaten. \nDiarmuid Murtagh beat Sean O’Brien on the outside and squared across for sub Cathal Heneghan to goal. \nSuch moments only reinforce the importance of expert markers. Unfortunately for the Kingdom\, Jason Foley went down with a concerning ankle injury late on\, with Armin Heinrich coming on in his place. \nOtherwise\, there was positive squad developments. Stephen O’Brien came on and scored. Paul Geaney was sensational\, scoring two points and laying across to O’Connor for an injury time goal. \nWith a new defensive structure still bedding in and a training camp abroad scheduled for the week before the league final\, Kerry do not appear to be full of ambition for another outing in HQ. Should they be? It is hard to say. \nAfter one worrying match\, they’ve steadied the ship and answered all other questions asked of them. DESCRIPTION:Wexford defeated Tipperary by 4-10 to 0-8 in Round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 4 on Sunday March 17th at Fethard Town Park. \n\nWexford overpower Tipp to keep promotion bid on track \nWexford 4-10 Tipperary 0-8  \nReport by Michael Dundon for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nTipperary had no answer to a rampant Wexford at Fethard as the Leinster men maintained their strong push for promotion from division four of the National Football League. \nWexford had this brace of points firmly in their grasp by half-time as they hit a struggling home side for three first-half goals to build a commanding lead which Tipperary never looked like catching. \nTipperary fielded a much-changed side from what was originally selected and were out of their depth against opposition that were faster\, physically stronger\, and who were bent on scoring goals at every opportunity. \nIt took 10 minutes to get their first goal\, Sean Nolan finishing a smart three-man move to put them 1-2 to 0-1 ahead. Connor Kennedy\, a late replacement for Ben Brosnan\, scored their second goal after 22 minutes from a Sean Nolan pass and Mark Rossiter claimed Wexford’s third goal after 27 minutes as they pushed 3-6 to 0-5 clear of an out-gunned Tipperary by half-time Any faint hopes Tipp had of a second half revival were dashed six minutes after resuming when Rossiter nudged home his second goal for Wexford in a goalmouth scramble. \nThe win keeps Wexford firmly on course for promotion\, their prospects greatly enhanced by the boost to their scoring difference of a 14-points win. They dominated from start to finish with key performances from such as Mark Rossiter\, Dylan Furlong\, Glen Malone\, Eoghan Nolan\, and Gavin Sheehan. The game marked a record-equalling 174th appearance for the county of Ben Brosnan who came on as a second half sub to score two points from frees. \nTipp were never really in the hunt. Out of contention in the league their focus is on the championship against Waterford next month with several players not available through injury at present.
