Ardscoil who were seeking a sixth title since 2010\, having lost in 2022. It is the third year on the trot that this competition had a maiden winner. \nThis Munster PPS U19A final was played on an immaculate Cusack Park in Ennis\, with the conditions ideal for hurling. With so much of this competition played in challenging conditions\, the 3\,014 spectators in attendance were treated to fast fare and high quality hurling from many of the games up-and-coming stars. \nA frantic opening saw talisman Darragh McCarthy and Fintan Fitzgerald trade scores inside 70 seconds\, indeed each of the first eight scores were scored be different players\, as Ardscoil took an early 0-5 to 0-3 advantage. \nFitzgerald was key throughout for Ardscoil\, and he fired over four points from distance by the 18th minute\, to push the Limerick school 0-8 to 0-5 clear. \nDespite their start\, Ardscoil were eventually matched in many departments by their counterparts from the Premier County. Nenagh certainly closed the half strongly to go in level at half-time. \nThe opening goal arrived on 28 minutes\, when Austin Duff\, the substitute stamped his mark on the game. After being introduced just four minutes prior\, he quickly fired over a point. He then raced onto a handpass from Aodhán O’Connor and dispatched to the net from a tight angle. \nDoughan’s third meant it was 1-8 to 0-11 at the change of ends. \nMcCarthy continued to grow into this contest as too did Marc O’Brien. Those two were prominent after the interval and by 40 minutes it was 1-13 to 0-15\, with McCarthy’s free from his own 65 putting them ahead. \nThree in a row for Ardscoil\, from Eoin Begley\, sub Darragh Gleeson and Fitzgerlad put them ahead entering the final minutes. However\, as it was for most of the contest\, neither side could shake free. \nNenagh went ahead before Michael Collins\, O’Brien and Kearney gave them the two point advantage. DESCRIPTION:Tipperary defeated Dublin by 2-27 to 0-22 in Round 1 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Saturday February 3rd at Parnell Park Dublin. \n\nMatch Highlights \n\nFULL-TIME HIGHLIGHTS: Tipperary get off to a winning start in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League with a win on the road in Parnell Park. \nFull Time Score:@DubGAAOfficial 0-22@TipperaryGAA 2-27 #GAANOW pic.twitter.com/jctzA8O1nO \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) February 3\, 2024 \n  \n\nTipperary ease past Dublin to start league on right note  \nTipperary 2-27 Dublin 0-22  \nReport by Paul Keane for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nA useful trip to the capital for Tipperary who took the Allianz League points with relative ease\, looked at 20 different players and had 13 different scorers. \nSean Ryan and Jake Morris struck the second-half goals while free-taker Gearoid O’Connor impressed with a dozen points overall. \nMorris was quiet initially though came strongly in the game in the final quarter and reeled off 1-2 in a row at one stage\, and 1-4 in total\, to repel a Dublin fight-back. \nDublin\, trailing by eight points at half-time\, got the deficit down to just four points with 15 minutes or so to go but never truly looked like pulling off an upset win over last season’s semi-finalists. \nMicheal Donoghue presumably targeted an early win at fortress Parnell Park to ignite their own bid for at least a top-three finish but without key players like Donal Burke and Eoghan O’Donnell the Dubs were comfortably beaten. \nThey’ll head to Antrim next Sunday in search of a belated win while Tipp will expect an even greater challenge at home to Galway in Thurles on the same afternoon. \nBoth counties bowed out of last year’s Championship on the same day in late June at the All-Ireland quarter-final stage. \nTipp retained just six starters – Rhys Shelly\, new captain Ronan Maher\, Bryan O’Mara\, Eoghan Connolly\, Alan Tynan and Morris – from that two-point loss to Galway. \nThey were missing the retired Seamus Callanan along with key figures like Jason Forde\, Cathal Barrett\, Michael Breen\, Dan McCormack and Noel McGrath. \nAs for Dublin\, they were down a number of established stars too with All-Star nominated forward Burke still recovering from injury and no signs of O’Donnell\, Danny Sutcliffe\, Cian Boland or former Cork senior Chris O’Leary either. \nBoss Donoghue was still able to start eight of the players that lined out in last June’s heavy Championship defeat to Clare. \nThere were first league starts for Mark Grogan and Darragh Power in defence as well as midfielder Brian Hayes and highly rated corner-forward Diarmaid O Dulaing. \nA decent home crowd turned out at the Donneycarney venue but the Sky Blues faithful endured a subdued start from the hosts as Tipp surged 0-6 to 0-1 ahead with only seven minutes on the clock. \nThe visitors capitalised on the stiff breeze behind them and the pick of the early points was goalkeeper Shelly’s bomb from inside his own 45-metre line. \nBy half-time\, Tipp had 10 different scorers though free-taker O’Connor accounted for seven of their scores and the majority of the rest were long-range strikes. \nWing-back Bryan O’Mara and both midfielders Willie Connors and Eoghan Connolly split the posts as inside forwards like Andrew Ormond and Ryan were left craving more possession. \nStill\, it was a mightily effective game plan and while Dublin improved in the second-half with Cian O’Sullivan their brightest performer\, they still hit the interval trailing by eight points\, 0-17 to 0-9. \nDublin had a half chance for a goal in the 32nd minute when O Dulaing sneaked the ball beyond the goalkeeper but Craig Morgan got back to clear the danger. They got off to a great start when captain\, Darragh Foley\, caught a high ball and converted the resultant mark. Colm Hulton and John Phiri added points before Waterford scored their first point from a Jason Curry free. \nCarlow played a possession game with Waterford happy to absorb the pressure and hope to counteract when chances presented themselves. \nThe key moment of the half came on 28 minutes when Jamie Clarke fired to the Waterford net after taking a good pass from Ross Dunphy. At the interval Carlow led 1-9 to 0-5 and it was hard to see where Waterford could rescue their situation. \nJust as they did in the opening half\, the home side scored the first point of the second half with Hulton again on the mark. Curry replied with a well-worked Waterford point but again this was cancelled out when Conor Crowley was on hand to fire over. Carlow were just that too good and they kept the pressure on on their rivals and added points with Foley and Hulton on the mark. \nThey emptied their bench late on and sub\, Cormac Lomax found the posts. Against a tiring defence\, the home side were unlucky not to score further goals when both Dunphy and Eric Molloy were denied by Waterford keeper\, Paudie Hunt. DESCRIPTION:Down defeated Limerick by 3-16 to 0-9 in Round 2 of the 2024 Allianz Football League Division 3 on Saturday February 3rd at Páirc Esler Newry. \n\nDown blitz Limerick to seal victory \nDOWN 3-16 LIMERICK 0-9  \nReport by John Reddington for the Irish Examiner newspaper \n“We aimed to win or two opening games before the first break so we’re very satisifed with the result\,” was skipper Pierce Laverty’s reaction after Down’s Division Three victory over Limerick in Newry’s Páirc Esler on Saturday evening.  \nAlthough they had to play second fiddle to the visitors in the opening 10 minutes\, once the outstanding Odhran Murdock let loose in midfield\, two penalties either side of a blistering goal from play had the result done and dusted well before the break. \nAnd the Ulster side were able to turn on the gas whenever their opponents threatened to fight back as they coasted to an emphatic victory. \nLimerick started off on fire with Iain Corbett getting them off the mark followed by Peter Nash from a free and from play. DESCRIPTION:Louth defeated Cork by 2-9 to 0-13 in Round 2 of the Allianz Football League Division 2 on Sunday February 4th at DEFY Páirc Mhuire Ardee. \n\n\nLouth inflict back-to-back league losses on Corkhttps://t.co/ptXF3v4m2Z \n— Irish Examiner Sport (@ExaminerSport) February 4\, 2024 \n  \nLouth inflict back-to-back league losses on Cork \nAllianz National Football League \nDivision 2\, Round 2 \nLouth 2-9 Cork 0-13 \nReport by Paul Keane for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nFor the second year in a row\, Cork have left Ardee’s DEFY Pairc Mhuire empty handed following another big National Football League win for hosts Louth. \nMickey Harte was in charge of Louth when they beat Cork in last year’s Division 2 campaign and new manager Ger Brennan celebrated his first league win this time. \nCork will kick themselves because they led by a point with 56 minutes on the clock but didn’t score again as Louth reeled off points from Craig Lennon\, Ryan Burns and captain Sam Mulroy to win it with two to spare. \nThere was drama at the death as Cork\, chasing a goal to rescue a result\, were twice denied by Niall McDonnell saves from Eoghan McSweeney and Darragh Cashman. \nIt’s back to back defeats for Cork following their Round 1 reversal against Donegal though they will at least have home advantage for the February 17 clash with Cavan. \nAs for Louth\, their first league win of the campaign will come as a timely boost ahead of their local derby date with Meath in Navan in Round 3. \nMulroy finished with five points for Louth while Ciaran Downey and Ciaran Keenan scored the first-half goals in what will go down as a crucial against the head win. \nJohn Cleary initially named the same Cork team that started against Donegal though Mark Cronin and Daniel O’Mahony were late additions for David Buckley and Rory Maguire. \nO’Mahony replaced the number six but dropped to full-back to mark Louth danger man Mulroy. \nThat was a great battle that Wee County captain Mulroy edged in the first-half\, scoring three points from frees and winning one of those frees himself following an Ian Maguire foul. \nMulroy also got out in front of O’Mahony in a straight head to head later in the half that led to a goal chance for Burns. \nRuairi Deane\, tracking back for Cork\, got in with the crucial block to deny Burns on that occasion. \nBut Louth did get in for two goals in the half that left them with a 2-4 to 0-9 lead at the break. Downey’s first in the 22nd minute came against the run of play because Cork had just opened up a 0-7 to 0-4 lead following Hurley’s third point of the game. \nThe Castlehaven man wasn’t long back on the pitch following a sixth minute black card for a frustrated drag down when a Cork goal chance came to nought. \nFrom the Louth kick-out after that 22nd minute Hurley point\, goalkeeper Niall McDonnell arrowed his delivery into the breeze and began a move that cut through the centre of Cork’s defence\, ending with Paul Mathews laying off to Downey to blast home. \nTwo minutes later\, the Cork defence was cut open again by Louth’s hard running down the right\, Conor Early this time getting free and playing the ball across for Keenan to palm in from close range. \nCork couldn’t say they weren’t warned because Louth had a 10th minute goal by Mathews ruled out for a square ball offence after ripping Cork asunder with a slick passing move down the left involving Burns\, Donal McKenny and Keenan. \nPatrick Doyle had an interesting opening half in goals for Cork. He went short with rapid fire kick-outs that were largely uncontested\, played as an auxiliary defender – something Louth have opted against despite doing so under Harte – and drilled a point from a long-range free. \nAt the other end\, Cork created several goal chances\, the best of which was Maurice Shanley’s 27th minute rocket that slammed off the post. \nThe third quarter was a tough watch. Cork dominated possession but\, battling the wind and 14 men behind the ball at times\, had to be patient. \nDeane won a free at one stage after three or four minutes of Cork possession only for Hurley to scuff his effort short. \nHurley and McSweeney points in the 48th and 49th minutes for Cork finally added some intrigue and Louth responded with a goal chance and a Downey shot that was blocked by Doyle. Brother Paudie and Tadhg Morley got their own introductions to the new campaign in the second-half as the Kingdom earned their first points of the Allianz League campaign after the opening home loss to Derry. \nIn truth\, this was a more straightforward assignment than might have been expected after that reversal in Tralee and Monaghan’s win against Dublin in Croke Park and the chief architect in that was Sean O’Shea. \nThe Kenmare man claimed a goal and seven points\, five of the latter from play\, and played a considerable wider role in the forward line in both halves. Diarmuid O’Connor and Graham O’Sullivan\, did their own solidifying work further back the field. \nIt actually started slowly but once it caught fire it blazed. The first-half came to a close with a 1-9 to 1-5 lead for Kerry that wallpapered over the to-and-fro nature of it and gave little heed to the fact that Monaghan had played most of the football. \nKerry’s scoring had come in two bursts\, one of four minutes and the other of eight\, with Cillian Burke claiming the goal approaching the half-hour with a composed sidestep to steady himself before unleashing a rocket into the top corner. \nIt was Buckley who had missed a golden goal chance midway through the half when he attempted to bounce the ball past Darren McDonnell in a one-on-one only for the goalkeeper to divert the danger with a flapping hand. \nThat chance had come in the middle of a madcap 90 seconds that started with Monaghan defender Ryan O’Toole deprived of his own three-pointer by the advancing Shane Ryan and finished with O’Toole fisting into the net after Buckley’s spurned chance. \nIf it was their inability to make the most of goal chances that irked Jack O’Connor in their league opening loss to Derry last week then Monaghan’s ability to find rich seams through his rearguard must have exercised him here more than anything else at half-time. \nRyan had had another save to make the first period\, that one from Kevin Loughran\, and Monaghan were frustrated further by some errant shooting and a handful of blocks from Graham O’Sullivan and Paul Murphy. Kerry tightened up later. \nO’Shea was already doing the bulk of the damage at the far end\, the Kenmare man stitching his name into a number of teammates’ scores and running up four of his own before the interval. His fourth\, on the half-hour\, was the first free either side kicked all day. \nIt was all very entertaining but the moment that produced the greatest jolt of electricity came in the 32nd minute when David Clifford was introduced in place of Ronan Buckley for his first inter-county appearance of the season. \nHe was on mere seconds when a shoulder on O’Toole under the main stand earned him a yellow and an ironic cheer from the home crowd\, and the Fossa man was joined by his brother Paudie for the start of the second-half. \nKerry were facing into a light and intermittent wind on the restart but Monaghan never managed to press the issue throughout the third quarter with six points shared evenly and O’Shea continuing to play the role of lead actor. \nCrucially for the Kingdom\, there were no more goalmouth scares as they dictated possession and territory far better\, and the sense of a day falling into place extended to Morley’s introduction near the end of the third quarter. \nThe last significant act came with O’Shea’s goal\, a long-range point attempt that swirled in the breeze and\, somehow\, over the goalkeeper and into the net. By that stage they were trailing 1-9 to 0-3. \nBrandon Barrett reduced the deficit to eight points with a well-struck free. It looked like a Kingdom goal was on the cards soon after\, but but Maurice O’Connor\, after gathering a highball and flicking it to Goggin\, struck a shot the wrong side of the crossbar. \nKavanagh and Nolan were on top form for Carlow. Kavanagh had a tally of five points in the opening period while Nolan struck 1-5\, as the visitors powered to a 1-14 to 0-7 lead at the break. \nKerry began the second half the brighter as Maurice O’Connor cut the gap down to eight with two quick points\, Kavanagh however was accurate at the other end\, a free and a score from play restored the 10-point margin by the 40-minute mark. \nAs the third quarter was nearing completion\, Carlow struck a second goal as Fiachra Fitzpatrick made a strong drive from the back\, gathered possession and raced into the area. He struck a rocket past Dee for a 2-16 to 0-9 lead. \nKerry were still plucking away and searching for a route to goal\, Carlow kept their shape and Kerry had to settle for points. Mark Rodgers started the new half with four pointed frees and it wasn’t until Patrick Horgan responded with one of his own in the 50th minute that Cork scored in that period. \nSeán O’Donoghue came up from the back to score Cork’s first from play in 22 minutes. However\, Clare were able to augment their total with points from Morey\, Meehan and Rodgers\, who sent over his 13th of the afternoon. \nClare won the toss and chose to try and harness the wind element in the first half. Leading by a point at the break\, 0-14 to 2-7\, they didn’t exploit it as much as they liked. \nIndiscipline and failing to track Cork’s runners were the root causes of it. Taking a Horgan sideline\, he looped the ball over the Clare cover to find Tommy O’Connell running into space. Played in poor conditions with a swirling wind throughout\, Tipp deserved their win on the balance of play. \nSix times in the second half Longford cut the gap to one point but Tipp were able to go down the field and get the vital score. \nLongford made a fine start to the game with points from Darren Gallagher (free) and Michael Quinn putting them ahead by two points after nine minutes. Jack Kennedy from JK Brackens got Tipp’s opening point in the 10th minute. \nTipp defender Jimmy Feehan blocked Mark Hughes’ goalbound shot in the 12th minute. Longford then kicked over two points to give them a three point lead in the 15th minute but that was to be their final score until first half stoppage time. \nTipp took a hold of the game and created a number of goal chances while also kicking over six points in a row; Clonmel’s Jack Kennedy kicked over two points (one ‘45 and a free)\, Stephen O’Brien kicked over an excellent point but had to go off injured. \nOisin O’Toole and Gallagher blocked efforts before Longford keeper Micheál Hughes pulled off a save to keep his goal intact. \nLongford were guilty of giving away the ball cheaply when in possession and being overturned on a number of occasions. Once again Gallagher was Longford’s best player and in stoppage time he kicked over a fantastic pointed free to cut the gap to two going in at the break – 0-5 to 0-7. \nGood play from Cathal McCabe and Gallagher cut the deficit to one point but Tipp replied with two points from O’Connor (one free). \nJayson Matthews and Mark Hughes kicked excellent efforts to close the gap to one but Tipp were ahead by three in the 47th minute with the brilliant O’Connor kicking over his fifth point of the game. \nDylan Farrell kicked over three frees for Longford but two pointed frees from O’Connor and a great effort from the excellent Paddy Creedon edged Tipp in front by three in the 64th minute. \nAfter he signaled to the bench to go off after picking up an injury Gallagher kicked over a superb point to keep his side in the game. DESCRIPTION:Westmeath defeated Clare by 1-11 to 0-13 in Round 2 of the Allianz Football League Division 3 on Sunday February 4th at TEG Cusack Park Mullingar. \n\nDolan happy to get the breaks as Westmeath pip Banner  \nWestmeath 1-11 Clare 0-13  \nReport by Gerry Buckley for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nWestmeath manager Dessie Dolan said he would “take a bit of luck any day of the week” after his side had eked out a somewhat fortunate one-point win against Clare in a dramatic game played in very windy conditions in Mullingar. \nThe very strong wind in Mullingar favoured Clare in the first half\, but Westmeath had total control of the ball for the opening four minutes and were rewarded with a soft goal from Conor Dillon\, whose point attempt was deflected into the net. However\, the home team only scored once more during the remainder of the half courtesy of Ronan Wallace. They also shot five poor wides\, with Dolan saying afterwards that they “had butchered several of them”. \nFor their part\, the Banner County men were much more economical\, with Dermot Coughlan particularly impressive at wing forward and he fired over a hat-trick of quality points. Ciaran Downes also scored three points\, including a ’45’ in the seventh minute. Arguably the best point of the half was a wonderful long-range shot from goalkeeper Stephen Ryan in the 19th minute. Clare deservedly led by 0-10 to 1-1 at the interval. \nLorcan Dolan was black-carded within a minute of the resumption of play and it took Westmeath a long time to settle with the wind behind them. Indeed\, they only scored two points in the third quarter via O’Toole and Loughlin (a free)\, while Aaron Griffin’s well-taken point in the 48th minute kept the scoreboard ticking over for the visitors. When Alan Sweeney pointed in style in the 59th minute\, Clare looked set to pick up their second set of league points. \nHowever\, Dessie Dolan’s charges then had a purple patch and they kicked six points without reply\, including a brace from Sam McCartan (the first of them with his fist). Westmeath now led by a single point (1-10 to 0-12) with 67 minutes on the clock. \nCoughlan soon picked up his second yellow card of the afternoon before the fourth official signalled a minimum of six minutes’ added-time. Brian McNamara rifled over a great equaliser and the game looked set to finish level when the home team spurned two good chances\, including a McCartan ’45’. In the fourth minute of injury-time\, Mark Fitzgerald’s troops had a ‘goal’ disallowed\, Cormac Murray’s slapped effort from point-blank range ruled out for a square ball. Westmeath made the most of this let-off when All Star nominee Ronan O’Toole kicked a superb winning score. There was still time for Westmeath sub Matthew Whittaker to be black-carded for a cynical foul. \nUnderstandably\, Dolan commended his players for “their spirit when their backs were to the ball”. His opposite number Fitzgerald said his men were “gutted” and “should have taken something out of the game”. Put on ice was their New Year homecoming. \nStaging it up the road in Thurles took the sting out of the inevitable February fanaticism. \nMoreover\, that the opposition were not Clare\, or Cork\, or Kilkenny\, or any such heavyweight crowd\, meant there was no microscope pulled out of the cupboard to see where Limerick and their drive for five are at on the first week of February. \nAll such ingredients enabled John Kiely to field an experimental line-up that contained only four starters from last year’s All-Ireland final win. \nOne of those four\, David Reidy\, opened their account on four minutes. And in a humdrum opening half\, it was the sporadic brilliance of this experienced quartet that drew loudest noise from the decent Limerick support. \nDan Morrissey rising highest on the edge of the square to fetch an incoming Antrim delivery – a roar. Dairmuid Byrnes doing likewise under the opposition restart – a roar. Gearoid Hegarty flicking possession up into his hand close to his own 20-metre line 10 minutes in – a roar. \nAntrim had the wind in their sails in the opening half. Little use they made of it. No.15 Fred McCurry was withdrawn to the middle third\, freeing up centre-back Ryan McGarry to sweep. \nTheir stickwork and passing up to halfway was at the prerequisite level\, but it was the final product – be it an aimless delivery or an off-target effort – that was so lacking and so let them down. \nThe aforementioned McCurry\, put through by Rian McMullan and Aodhan O’Brien\, struck for goal on 18 minutes. And when midfielder Niall O’Connor horsed Barry Murphy out of his way enroute to a huge point three minutes later\, Antrim had a 1-6 to 0-7 lead to work with and add to. \nLearn more\nThey’d not score again\, though\, for another quarter of an hour. In the meantime\, Limerick’s youthful inside line of Donnacha Ó Dálaigh\, Shane O’Brien\, and Adam English put on a fine audition for John Kiely. Ó Dálaigh turning over goalkeeper Tieran Smyth before throwing over the sliotar on 29 minutes was the outstanding example of such. \nÓ Dálaigh finished the half with three from play\, one more than O’Brien\, while English clipped four from play and five from the placed-ball. \nThe trio’s strong contribution to a nine-in-a-row burst took Limerick back under the tunnel 0-16 to 1-7 in front. \nThe second half was even more humdrum. A Paddy Burke mistake inside two minutes of the restart allowed Shane O’Brien raise a green flag. What came after was another patch of nine unanswered Limerick points. \nThe clock read 50 minutes when Rian McMullan opened Antrim’s second half account. It was one of only two second-half Antrim scores. \nLimerick subs Micheál Houlihan and Graeme Mulcahy were among the Treaty’s second-half contributors. Mulcahy coming on and Mulcahy firing over received two more roars to rival what his first-team colleagues had been treated to early on. \nLimerick are away to Westmeath next weekend. Another low-key outing. Limerick won’t mind at all. DESCRIPTION:Waterford defeated Offaly by 3-20 to 0-17 in Round 1 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Sunday February 4th at Glenisk O’Connor Park Tullamore. \n\nAllianz HL D1: Lively Waterford triumph \nWaterford 3-20 Offaly 0-17 \nBy Ciarán Burns at Glenisk O’Connor Park for GAA.ie \nTwo first half goals in the space of just 30 seconds ensured that Waterford never looked like losing this afternoon’s Allianz Hurling League opener in Tullamore\, despite solid resistance from an Offaly side that showed flashes of potential at various stages of the game. \nIt was an experimental Waterford side that took to the field at Glenisk O’Connor Park and Offaly certainly tested the young Déise side in the opening exchanges\, albeit with a fresh breeze assisting their cause.   \nOffaly’s Brian Duignan started the game well by winning a free close to goal\, enabling Eoghan Cahill to opened his account. The Birr man went on to put Offaly three points up within the first 10 minutes. \nWaterford were never far away from the home side\, however\, as they began to get a hold of Offaly’s shooters\, keeping them quiet from inside positions. Offaly were forced to shoot from range and in the first half they duly did so\, with Killian Sampson\, Jason Sampson and David Nally all getting fine scores from distance. \nWides continued to be a problem for the midlanders however\, with 10 in the first half – and 14 in total – restricting their ability to run up a score. \nWaterford made hard work of getting the ball up the field\, some sloppy play would surely have frustrated their travelling support\, but throughout the game the Munster men had a dangerous inside line. Sean Walsh was on target for their first goal midway through the half and the result of the tie felt inevitable when Stephen Bennett snagged two in a minute not long after. \nHis first came out of nothing\, or a butchered free to be more precise. The Waterford captain dropped the ball after rising it\, before managing to get it back in his hands and rifling it into the far corner. \nOffaly shot themselves in the foot straight from the restart. A loose pass reached Bennett again who took a similarly precise strike into the corner of the net\, ensuring a comfortable 3-8 to 0-10 lead at half-time\, and a second half which was much more about practice and sharpness than a genuine pursuit \nMistakes were common and the soft ground may have made life more difficult for two sides who aspired to play fast hurling\, more suited to summer conditions. \nBoth teams will be disappointed with some wasteful play\, but Waterford caught Offaly out with powerful running in behind the Offaly half-back line\, with off the shoulder runners capitalising on good short\, sharp passing. \nAfter a shaky start they really grew into this game thanks to the sharpness of their inside line particularly. Stephen Bennett scored 2-4 and Sean Walsh 1-1\, showing their prowess in front of the posts. Michael Kiely and Patrick Curran also helped them tick through the middle\, nabbing 0-3 and 0-2 respectively. \nWith Offaly marksman Eoghan Cahill leaving the field after picking up an injury\, full forward Duignan took over Offaly’s frees with great effect in the second half. \nHe managed to keep his side in the hunt and they really came into the game\, pulling the lead back to three points at one stage. The Kerry side was missing a number of last season’s regular starters\, and they were forced to field without their talisman Shane Conway\, who also missed the opening defeat at home to Carlow through injury last weekend. \nThe visitors had the use of a strong wind in the first half\, thanks to an early Michael Leane goal; they used it to telling effect as they showed great heart with nine different scorers in the opening period. They led at halftime by 1-15 to 1-11. The only question was whether that seven point lead would be enough because Down would have the use of the elements in the second half. \nKillian Hayes fired over from play as did Darragh Shanahan\, Kyle O’Connor and Gavin Dooley (2) which put Kerry 1-9 to 0-9 to the good by the end of the first quarter. They increased the lead to five 1-12 to 0-10 when Fionan Mackessy fired over a long range effort from play. \nThe long puck champ was in stellar form and he also converted a long range free. Points by the ever busy Dan Goggin\, Maurice O’Connor and Niall Mulcahy rounded off the opening half scoring to give Kerry a half-time lead of 1-15 to 0-11. \nDown completely took over in the contest in the second period and Kerry failed to register an opening score in the second half until the 57th minute. By that stage Down hit 2-8 without reply between the 35th and 52nd minutes to leave them in a commanding position. \nDaithi Sands got the first goal\, blasting to the roof of the net. More history. \nA week after Nenagh CBS won a first Harty Cup\, a new name was similarly inscribed on the Corn Uí Mhuirí. Mercy Mounthawk\, in their first final appearance\, celebrated a first final win. \nWith no team having got closer than six points to them on the road to Austin Stack Park\, an inordinate amount of pressure and expectation fell on the young shoulders of the Mounthawk students to live up to all that had been said and written about them. \nAnd for spells of this Tralee derby decider\, that pressure and expectation told\, and told visibly. But when backed into a corner in the closing stages of this final\, they showed the true mark of champions. \nBacked by the elements\, Tralee had succeeded in halving a six-point deficit to trail 0-12 to 0-9 on 50 minutes. Three minutes further on\, Oisin McGibney’s foot block on a Darragh Cunnane point attempt saw referee Conor Lane award a Tralee CBS penalty. \nRonan Carroll stepped forward and coolly slotted the ball into the right corner. Draw game. Game on. \nThe urgency that had for so long been absent from Mounthawk’s efforts was there in spades in their response to the levelling score. \nTomás Kennedy\, Paddy Lane\, and Ben Murphy kicked three points in-a-row to get them over the line and into the history books. \nMercy Mounthawk had led 0-9 to 0-4 at half-time. They were in front from the third minute\, had limited their opponents to just two points from play\, and yet there’s every chance they were the more disgruntled dressing-room at the break. \nMounthawk had the wind blowing out their sails in the opening half. They applied a suffocating press on Tralee goalkeeper Oisín O’Halloran’s restarts. Their three inside operators and three half-forwards held their respective position\, with five black shirts then lining the 65-metre line. They won the first five Tralee restarts. \nThey even went a man up late in the first-half following a black card to Andrew Kerins on 27 minutes. \nAgainst this backdrop\, their five-point lead was nothing hectic. And they’ll have known such. They wouldn’t have needed Aidan O’Shea to tell them so during the break. \nThey engineered three green flag openings and took none. Goalkeeper O’Halloran saved twice from Odhran Ferris and Lane\, while the latter had a palmed goal correctly ruled out for square ball. \nFerris had them on the board in the third minute. Of their remaining eight first-half points\, Lane accounted for six. His breakdown was three from play\, two frees\, and a mark. Busy in the assists department was Daniel Kirby and half-back Pádraig O’Halloran. \nAt the other end\, their defence was patient in shutting down Tralee’s attempted incisions. In one passage of play\, midfielders Liam Óg O’Connor and Pat Brosnan had their point efforts charged down before Andrew Kerins had his pass intercepted. \nRonan Carroll kicked a superb point into the elements on the half hour to leave the scoreboard reading 0-8 to 0-4. The five-point deficit facing the Tralee CBS students upon the change of ends would not have daunted them\, especially when Mounthawk had so many teams buried by this juncture. \nTralee CBS came with a ferocious second half effort. Jerh Brosnan won frees. Daragh Cunnane\, Luke Rochford\, and Hugh Lenihan rose white flags. \nSo telling\, though\, was that when they restored parity\, they were never afforded a single opportunity to hit the front and their last-ditch play to fashion an equaliser was snuffed out by Mounthawk students on a mission. \nMission accomplished. Donnelly put Kilkenny up once more in additional time and Shane Kingston’s chance to level or even find the net was lost when his touch betrayed him. \nCork had three goal openings inside the first 10 minutes of the second half\, two of them spurned. Less than two minutes after the resumption\, Patrick Horgan’s effort was admirable but went wide and the attack was overplayed\, as was Kingston’s chance in the 43rd minute. \nSo quiet in the first half\, Kingston put the afterburners on again and made a beeline for goal but Eoin Murphy was equal to his shot. At least Cork tied up the game in the 50th minute and went ahead for the first time in the 58th but those opportunities should have been two points at the very least. \nFor two-thirds of the first half\, Cork’s play wavered between the abject and the impractical. Inside the first 13 minutes\, they had posted four wides and dropped a couple of shots short. Their inside forward line looked forlorn as the little ball that came their way was either overhit or misplaced. \nKilkenny\, on the other hand\, were sharp and the work ethic of their forward line was causing panic for a Cork back line who insisted on playing the ball through the hands. \nCork were loose with their puck-outs too and far too pedestrian when Kilkenny were restarting. A couple of their first six points in the opening 10 minutes were assisted by goalkeeper Eoin Murphy. \nLuke Meade had a penalty call turned down in the 14th minute. In truth\, he oversold the foul and it spoke of the desperation in the Cork play at that time. The next four points came from the visitors whose advantage jumped to eight points by the 20th minute. \nCork needed to rejig and while the introduction of Ger Millerick for Rob Downey didn’t make an instant impact\, his presence gave the home defence more composure. \nKilkenny scored three of the next five points to lead 0-13 to 0-4 by the 26th minute. However\, they failed to point for the remaining 11 minutes of the half as Cork finally made a game of it. \nIn the 33rd minute\, they strung together two successive points for the first time in the game and Patrick Horgan followed it with his third free of the game when Huw Lawlor was booked for a high foul on Conor Lehane. \nCork still had concerns – Tommy O’Connell’s last-gasp hook tracking Mikey Carey was vital in the 35th minute. In front of 3\,951 fans\, two injury time efforts from the Banner full forward saw Brian Lohan’s men scrape the narrowest of victories.  \nMidfielder Sean Rynne also shone for the visitors with two points from play. A late Waterford rally fell just short. Davy Fitzgerald’s side lost 2020 All Star Stephen Bennett to injury in the second half. Conor Ryan and Sean Walsh impressed for the home team.  \nThe Déise won the toss but elected to play against the wind. Sean Walsh opened the scoring for the hosts after just ten seconds. Aidan McCarthy replied within 30 seconds. Waterford joint captain Stephen Bennett converted three frees while Clare speedster Ian Galvin clipped over two from play at the other end.  \nOn 12 minutes\, a Shaun O’Brien short puckout found Paddy Leavy and the Ballygunner midfielder picked out Sean Walsh in the corner. The number fifteen billowed the far corner of the Clare net (1-4 to 0-3). Ironically\, it looked ominous for the small home following early on\, Limerick coming close to scoring a goal after 25 seconds when Graeme Mulchay’s rasping shot came back off the crossbar. David Williams was on song from placed balls at the other end and he converted seven frees in the opening half (one of them from well over 100 metres)\, in addition to slotting over a great point from play from a tight angle in the sixth minute. \nThe home team’s only other score from open play in the first moiety came from the stick of midfielder Shane McGovern just past the half-hour mark. John Kiely’s troops were untypically lethargic and they needed late points from Darragh O’Donovan and Ó Dálaigh (his third) to tie the contest. Their other scores (all from play) came via David Reidy\, Micheál Houlihan (two)\, Seamus Flanagan and Mulcahy. At the interval\, the scoreboard read: Limerick 0-9 Westmeath 0-9. \nMost spectators expected the Shannonsiders to dominate the second half with the wind behind them\, but this expected dominance never materialised as the Lake County men continued to show great heart and no little skill\, with sub Joey Boyle to the fore. Niall Mitchell opened the scoring with a great point. Limerick continued to be wasteful and they shot three wides in the opening five minutes before Cathal O’Neill settled their nerves with a neat point. Tit-for-tat scoring saw the underdogs still on level terms (0-14 apiece) with 56 minutes on the clock\, and a sensational result was not out of the question at this juncture. \nWilliams then untypically missed a scoreable free before the Munster men pounced for a crucial 1-2 without reply The points came via a Tom Morrissey free and Reidy’s second long-range point of the afternoon\, before Morrissey teed up Ó Dálaigh for a well-taken goal from a tight angle. Another Williams free preceded a missed chance of a goal by Mitchell whose shot flew over the crossbar in the 68th minute. With that\, the chance of a massive shock all but ended and Limerick closed out the game with well-taken late points from subs Mark Quinlan\, Patrick O’Donovan and Conor Boylan. So\, this clash was being billed as a real test of the sides and especially for the newcomers dotted in the starting fifteens. \nIt was also a big occasion for Galway selector Eamon O’Shea who was facing his native county and a side he guided to All-Ireland success for the second time only five years ago – his son Donal lined up at midfield for Galway and had a big impact on the game. \nThough the day was good and dry\, the going was heavy enough with persistent rain throughout the weekend leading to energy sapping underfoot conditions – use of the bench would prove vital as the match proceeded. \nThere would be 29 scores on the board by the half way mark with the hosts enjoying a 0-16 to 0-13 lead in what had been a very entertaining contest. But crucially Tipperary had lost both Jake Morris and Bryan O’Mara by the 20 minute mark at a time when they were leading by six points. And thereafter Galway hit eight of the next 12 scores to bring themselves right back into the match. \nTipp had raced into a 0-6 to 0-2 lead with Gearoid O’Connor as their chief protagonist – he finished the half with 0-8 to his name ( 7 frees) but they also had Willie Connors (2) Jake Morris\, Alan Tynan propping up with points\, whereas Galway’s Conor Cooney\, Tom Monaghan (2) and Donal O’Shea were on target. \nO’Connor and Connors traded scores with Cianan Fanhy and Evan Niland\, while Sean Kenneally had another for a Tipp side which threatened a goal on a number of occasions but did not deliver – Galway keeper Darach Fahy saving well from Sean Ryan. \nGalway were finding their feet though and they pointed through Niland (3)\, Conor Whelan\, Gavin Lee and Conor Cooney to cut the deficit to two as half time approached. Tipp hit back though with Craig Morgan – their eighth scorer in the half – and O’Connor helping them to that three point interval margin – Conor Whelan producing a beautiful point from out near the sideline to complete the Tribesmen’s tally. \nThe game was still very much in the melting pot at the break – all to play for. \nTipperary started the second half in a whirlwind and had five points from play without reply on the board inside seven minutes – Mark Kehoe getting three of those with Gearoid O’Connor getting the other two. DESCRIPTION:Nenagh CBS defeated Kilkenny CBS by 3-19 to 2-11 in the Masita All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Croke Cup Hurling Quarter-Final on Saturday February 17th at Rathdowney. \n\nHarty champs Nenagh CBS march on in Croke Cup \nCroke Cup quarter-final: St Joseph’s CBS\, Nenagh 3-19 Kilkenny CBS 2-11  \nReport by Shane Brophy for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nFirst-time Harty Cup champions Nenagh CBS showed they are hungry for more success after seeing off Leinster runners-up Kilkenny CBS in the All-Ireland Post Primary Schools Senior ‘A’ Hurling quarter final in Rathdowney on Saturday. \nWith the finalists in Munster\, Leinster & Connacht making up the All-Ireland series participants\, the runners-up from those are joined by a provincial champion for a quarter-final on an annual rotational basis. It was Munster’s turn which left Nenagh with just a two-week turnaround to come down from the high of their historic Harty Cup triumph. \nThey were full value for their win\, although overcoming a sticky patch in the first half\, an Eanna O Casaide goal on 20 minutes giving Kilkenny CBS the lead after Nenagh started on the front foot with Darragh McCarthy on target inside 25 seconds. However\, the Nenagh skipper had an off-day from placed balls and five first-half misses prevented the Munster champions from making their dominance count on the scoreboard. \nThey responded to the Kilkenny goal with one of their own from Danny Quinn in the 28th minute\, set up by Austin Duff who once again made a massive impact off the bench. Points from McCarthy and Eoghan Doughan\, who took over the free-taking duties\, gave Nenagh a 1-9 to 1-5 half-time advantage. \nThe Munster champions kicked on in the third quarter with Jake Hackett marshalling the defence well from centre-back while points from Ciaran Foley\, McCarthy\, the free-taking of Doughan and livewire sub John O’Dwyer pushed them 1-15 to 1-8 clear on the three-quarter mark. \nKilkenny CBS changed their approach and started running the ball at Nenagh and it yielded three points in a row\, although one was from a penalty on 47 minutes when Greg Kelly’s shot rose after the bar after their best forward Ryan Corcoran was pulled down in the square. \nThe Leinster runners-up had momentum\, but Eoghan Doughan responded with a timely point for Nenagh from play. The home side also missed three second-half frees. \n“I don’t understand how people can turn their noses up at Waterford football. When I was with Tipperary\, we struggled to beat them. They are hard to beat down here and I admire them.” \nThe O’Byrne Cup winners stepped it up in the second half. Three points apiece from Mark Hughes and Darren Gallagher gave Christie’s men their first win of the Division 4 campaign. \n“At half time\, Waterford were up by a point but they should have been up by four or five. They were the better team. We were very poor. There was a bit of bite missing with us and that changed at half-time. A few of the senior players stood up and were counted. You could see a dramatic change. It went from a five out of ten to an eight out of ten very quickly. Waterford have a decent team. They live in the shadows of the hurlers down here but it is always hard going to beat them. They are full of fight and full of grit.” \nThis game was switched to the Ballygunner GAA grounds on Saturday afternoon as the SETU Arena was deemed unplayable. Long-range points from Dermot Ryan\, Michael Mullaney and Robbie McGrath gave the hosts a 3-2 advantage after eight minutes. The visitors hit back with four unanswered points from Dessie Reynolds\, Jayson Matthews\, Darren Gallagher and Daniel Reynolds. \nWaterford levelled up matters with three white flags in as many minutes via Jason Curry\, Stephen Curry and Ryan. An injury time free from Tom O’Connell edged them 9-8 ahead at the break. \nLongford re-emerged with more intensity. Bryan Masterson split the posts within 20 seconds of the restart before Joseph Hagan put them in front. O’Connell made it all square for the eighth time with a fisted effort. \nDarren Gallagher took over at midfield for Longford as Waterford went 20 minutes without a score. Points from Gallagher\, Paddy Kiernan and Mark Hughes moved them 14-10 up. \nGallagher was dismissed on 65 minutes for a second bookable offence but the Déise couldn’t capitalise. O’Connell converted three late frees for Paul Shankey’s side. A third straight league defeat has edged Cork closer and closer to Tailteann Cup football this summer and Division 3 League fare next spring. \n14-man Cavan\, having gone scoreless from the 52nd minute to the seventh minute of injury-time\, claimed the two points on offer when sub Oisin Brady and top-scorer Paddy Lynch threw over back-to-back white flags deep\, deep in second-half injury-time to push the visitors two in front. \nDespite referee Brendan Griffin having signalled for six minutes of second-half injury-time\, he allowed play to continue on and allowed Cork a chance to fashion a game-winning goal. \nA foul on Matty Taylor just outside the 20-metre line presented sub Steven Sherlock with a free that was deflected over the crossbar in the last play on 79 minutes. \nUnder-pressure Cork were the first of the two teams to lose a man. Luke Fahy\, black carded in the opening half\, saw yellow on 44 minutes. At the time\, the sides were level at 0-12 apiece. \nCavan immediately capitalised on their numerical advantage. Three Paddy Lynch frees\, coupled with Lynch and Ciarán Brady white flags before the Fahy sending off\, completed a Cavan five-in-a-row to move them 0-15 to 0-12 ahead on 52 minutes. \nProblem for Raymond Galligan’s charges was that they’d not score again until the 77th minute. They also lost Padraig Faulkner during this period\, the half black picking up a black on 64 minutes to go with his yellow from a few minutes earlier. \nCork\, through a succession of dead-ball efforts from Mark Cronin and Sherlock\, were able to get level on 73 minutes. They were not able\, however\, to maintain level footing. \nTheir failure to register a single second half point from play is not a pretty stat for a side in a deep hole to save their Division 2 status. The first-half\, too\, had not been overly convincing in front of the opposition posts. \nCork’s surging finish to the opening half – they kicked the last four points\, including three in injury-time – went someway to compensating for four first-half goal chances not taken. \nThe first of this wasted quartet was by a distance the most clearcut. On 13 minutes\, Ruairí Deane and Mattie Taylor combined to put Eoghan McSweeney in front of an empty goal. McSweeney\, though\, touched Taylor’s lofted pass against the crossbar. \nIan Maguire later saw his effort blocked\, while in the case of Mark Cronin and Chris Óg Jones\, both ended up with white rather than flags. \nCronin’s point on 22 minutes had Cork 0-7 to 0-4 in front. The hosts were temporarily operating with 14 at this juncture\, Luke Fahy having been black carded four minutes earlier for dragging down Paddy Lynch. \nIt was the game’s second black card\, Killian Brady shown the line on 12 minutes for needlessly blocking Brian Hurley. \nCavan’s most productive spell arrived after falling three behind. Their response was a four-in-a-row from Lynch (two frees and one play) and sub Conor Rehill to pull ahead on 33 minutes\, 0-8 to 0-7. Cork’s favoured restart option of overloading the left flank struggled here\, with the visitors stealing more than one opposition kickout. \nA Chris Óg Jones pair – the second could easily have hit the net – returned the hosts in front. More Clifford magic as he wins it with the last kick of the game for @Kerry_Official #GAANOW pic.twitter.com/5AjWKMvFlP \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) February 17\, 2024 \n  \n\nHaving lost to Mayo in League and Championship last year\, Kerry will be happy enough to have shown Mayo to the door in Tralee on a drizzly Saturday night\, but Jack O’Connor will ruminate deep into the week on a scrappy performance that had Kerry scrambling for the win from a game they were only ever behind in for a minute at the very beginning. \nHaving trailed by three points on the 60-minute mark\, and with stand-out defender Sam Callinan sent off on a yellow followed by a black\, Mayo dragged themselves back into the game until Ryan O’Donoghue’s converted free squared the scores\, 0-15 apiece\, in the 70th minute. \nThe allotted three minutes of additional time had almost elapsed when Kerry patiently worked the ball for one last counter-offensive\, Sean O’Shea getting the ball to David Clifford and the Footballer of the Year doing the rest. \nIt was a win Kerry possibly just about deserved\, though nine wides and a couple of shots dropped short could have denied them on another night. Mayo\, too\, will rue some sloppy shot execution\, but the visitors couldn’t have been begrudged a share of the points but for Clifford’s late magic. \nFergal Boland punched Mayo into the lead after 25 seconds before David Clifford equalised a minute later\, and Kerry were never behind after that. \nIn what was a passive sort of contest Paudie Clifford put Kerry 0-3 to 0-1 ahead although missed chances were more the order of the half than brilliant scores. \nCallinan’s eighth minute score was notable\, but so was David Clifford’s uncharacteristic scuffed effort two minutes later to create a shot on goal that Colm Reape easily gathered. \nSean O’Shea and O’Donoghue exchanged pointed frees\, then David Clifford and Callinan traded scores to make it 0-5 to 0-4 after 27 minutes. \nAidan O’Shea set up O’Donoghue for another Mayo point\, before Jason Foley stormed forward to kick Kerry into a 0-7 to 0-5 half time lead. \nWith a strong wind it was a slim Kerry lead to take to the interval\, having registered seven wides in the opening period. Dylan Geaney’s point opened up the game’s first three-point gap early in the second half\, but Mayo found an extra gear in the second half and cut the deficit to a point by the 53rd minute. \nDiarmuid O’Connor and Paudie Clifford extended Kerry into a 0-14 to 0-11 lead\, and when Callinan was sent off in the 59th minute for a black card on top of an earlier yellow\, Mayo’s challenge looked. However\, Reape converted a free\, and O’Donoghue scored twice to make it 0-15 apiece with three additional minutes to play. \nIt took Kerry all of that time to engineer the one chance they needed when they got the ball to Clifford. London were snapping at their heels from stimp to stern. Though it was London’s Cahir Healy  who grabbed the injury time equaliser\, the hosts will justifiably feel they could have taken both points on offer. Both sides kicked eight wides. \nTipp must have felt they had the win bagged after a par of late scores from full-back Shane O’Connell and full-forward Jack Kennedy but a wonderful effort from distance from Healy salvaged a valuable point with virtually the last kick. \nThe two sides traded early scores before Paul Kelly’s side began to assert their superiority with four points on the spin – three from the lively Sean O’Connor from dead balls. The UCC man was the figurehead in attack and London looked like a side gasping for air at this stage. \nHowever\, a point from Ruarí Rafferty reduced the deficit and moments later a quick London break concluded with the ball in the hands of midfielder Liam Gallagher who calmly slotted the ball past Jack Rodgers in the Tipp net. Game on. \nRodgers came dangerously close to gifting London a second goal just before the interval when he fumbled the ball in the square. Ruarí Rafferty pounced to capitalise but Jimmy Feehan did well to clear. The sides went in level at the interval 1-3 to 0-6. \nThe second half saw a noticeable increase in tempo and intensity\, London starting the quicker with a couple of points from the impressive Cathal Lacey. However London would soon be without Lacey who was helped off for treatment after picking up a nasty knock while going for his third score in a row. His injury would take some time and care which added 11 minutes to the clock at the end of the game. \nAfter a lengthy delay\, Ruarí Rafferty edged London three points ahead\, and a surprise looked on the cards. In the space of a little over 15 minutes\, Clare – who in over 200 minutes of football up to that point\, had scored 1-23\, or just over one point for every eight minutes of play – somehow roused themselves to score 2-6. \nAs for Offaly\, and new manager Declan Kelly\, this one will hurt\, and may even cripple. Upcoming home games against Limerick and Wicklow mean that relegation is not a certainty yet\, but the Faithful County  have failed to take anything from three tight games now. \n“It’s one that shouldn’t have been left behind\,” said Kelly\, while Mark Fitzgerald\, his Clare counterpart\, understandably sought to praise the contribution of his subs. \nOff the bench\, Diarmuid O’Donnell led the Banner resurgence with 1-2\, while Cormac Murray managed a point\, supplementing his and Éinne O’Connor’s explosive impact. \nFitzgerald was quick to highlight their influence. “The lads were brilliant when they came on. Éinne was brilliant\, Diarmuid came on and he got 1-2\, Cormac gave us great impetus as he has done all year\,” he said. \n“We played awful in the first half after getting a good start. I think complacency set in\, we made stupid mistakes and doing all the things we said we wouldn’t do.” \nIn a frustrating half of slow and laborious football\, there wasn’t much to report. At two points apiece\, Clare squandered two golden goal chances which would really have sucker-punched the midlanders. \nKevin McDermott looked certain to fire in a goal for Offaly after a mazy run. His one-on-one effort was pushed wide by the foot of Stephen Ryan. The home side pushed on and garnered a four-point lead after the 20-minute mark. \nThey began to make hay thanks to frees from Dylan Hyland and Nigel Dunne. As a result\, Offaly led 0-7 to 0-3 at half time but neither team could have been happy with what they showed early on. \nThe second half sprung to life with a lovely Nigel Dunne point after the restart. Offaly appeared to turn the screw with an Anton Sullivan goal that came after competing with Stephen Ryan under a dropping high ball. This put Offaly 1-10 to 0-4 up. \nClare did not give in\, nor did they stop running. They responded very well and began to put pressure on Offaly’s kickouts and countered quickly from breaking ball. From this pressure\, Emmet McMahon added his only three points of the game all from second half frees. \nOffaly began to sweat and were shaken by a Ciarán Downes penalty scored on the 60-minute mark. At 1-10 to 1-06\, O’Donnell notched two quick-fire points for Clare before pouncing on an Ian Duffy save that rolled out to his onrushing boot. \nClare had the score at 1-11 to 2-10 but with seconds to go in injury time Offaly were awarded a penalty. In keeping with their tragic tale\, Peter Cunningham blazed the spot kick over the bar\, and if ever hearts falling into boots was visible\, it was the case in Tullamore yesterday. \nFor Clare\, promotion is back on the table. “‘You have to be confident after that” said Fitzgerald. \n“You come back from nine points down and winning two out of three\, though it probably should have been three to be honest with you. Tipperary. \n\n\nMounthawk turn the screw in second half to see off Naas and reach first Hogan Cup Finalhttps://t.co/yg30aCXXiM \n— Irish Examiner Sport (@ExaminerSport) February 24\, 2024 \n  \nMounthawk turn the screw in second half to see off Naas and reach first Hogan Cup Final \nAll-Ireland Post Primary Hogan Cup semi-final: Mercy Mounthawk (Kerry) 1-15 Naas CBS (Kildare) 1-10  \nReport by Murt Murphy for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nA 1-3 salvo in a four-minute spell before half time saw Mercy Mounthawk take a two-point lead at the interval and a more controlled second-half display saw the Kerry side kill off 13-man Naas CBS challenge in this Hogan Cup semi-final played at Bansha this afternoon. \nIt is Mounthawk’s first appearance in a Hogan Cup final but it did not look likely after 20 minutes. Naas CBS dominated the early exchanges as Niall Cramer was keeping the lid on Mounthawk danger man Paddy Lane.  \nAfter early misses on both sides\, Tomas Kennedy fired over the opening point for Mounthawk but Naas CBS responded with two points on the trot from defenders Matthew Kelly and Rob Murray but Paddy Lane leveled with a converted free after Ben Murphy was fouled. \nBut Naas CBS were winning breaking ball and attacking in numbers. After Tom Kelly kicked a fine point\, Naas CBS struck for a 15th-minute goal. Liam O’Connor raced through the heart of the Mounthawk defence and found Ferdia O’Domhnaill with an inch-perfect pass\, and he slid the ball to the corner of the Mounthawk net.  \nWhen fullback Brian Hoctor traveled the length of the pitch\, Naas CBS had raced into a 1-4 to 0-2 lead after just 16 minutes. Garry O’Riordan and Daniel Kirby then thundered into the game as Mounthawk finally got going with Kirby being fouled twice and Lane converted both frees.  \nKirby\, after a Ben Murphy surge\, then kicked a massive point from play\, and suddenly Mounthawk trailed by only two (1-4 to 0-5) after 20 minutes. \nBut Naas were a side bristling with quality and points from Gilmartin brothers\, Evan and Daire\, pushed Naas four clear as the game approached the final five minutes of the opening half. \nBut Garry O’Riordan proved the catalyst for the Mounthawk comeback with a lung-bursting run to set up Paddy Lane for a point. Then when Kennedy forced a turnover\, Lane found Noah Townsend inside the cover and buried the ball in the Naas net. \nKirby added an inspirational point and Tomas Kennedy scored from a mark and from being four down\, Mercy Mounthawk led by two at half time\, 1-8 to 1-6 at half time. \nThe Kerry school resumed a fired-up side as Paddy Lane moved out to the half-forward line and Mounthawk assumed complete control thanks to the Murphy brothers\, Ben and Jack\, Gary O’Riordan\, Daniel Kirby and the unstoppable Lane.  \nHe kicked the first point of the second half and two more Lane points and another from Kirby had Mounthawk 1-12 to 1-8 clear by the end of third quarter. \nThe game then took a turn when Liam O’Connor received a second yellow in the 49th minute and that ended the Naas CBS challenge. DESCRIPTION:Tipperary defeated Westmeath by 3-25 to 2-21 in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Saturday February 24th at FBD Semple Stadium Thurles. \n\nTipperary made to battle but survive Westmeath scare \nAllianz Hurling League Division 1 Group B: Tipperary 3-25 Westmeath 2-21  \nReport by Stephen Barry for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nA stoppage-time own goal from keeper Noel Conaty helped Tipperary survive a late scare against Westmeath and move closer to a place in the Allianz Hurling League semi-finals. \nTwo Mark Kehoe goals in the space of a minute put Tipp on course for their third win on the spin before being withdrawn at half-time. \nThey had led by 14 points with 19 minutes remaining but Westmeath\, who pushed Limerick to the pin of their collar last time out\, created havoc with long balls in the second half. \nNiall Mitchell was the target and David Williams the major beneficiary\, scoring 2-12 and seeing a penalty saved by Rhys Shelly. \nThey closed the gap to four entering two added minutes before Conaty spilled the ball into his own net under pressure after saving from Jason Forde. \nIn a team featuring 14 changes from the victory over Galway\, Liam Cahill gave league debuts to David Kelly\, Seán Hayes\, and Fitzgibbon Cup winner Cathal Quinn\, a first start to Billy Seymour\, and first appearances of 2024 to Dan McCormack\, Noel McGrath\, and Forde. \nAn early-season tune-up for some\, a final chance to impress for others as Cahill expects to trim his panel in the coming week. \nForde had hit 2-20 between Tipp’s two recent victories over Westmeath and he added 0-12 (11 frees) to that record\, while Conor Stakelum contributed 0-6 from play in front of 1\,962 fans at Semple Stadium. \nTipp ran up the first four points without appearing in full flow; the best of the bunch a superb Kehoe catch and run which flashed just over the crossbar. \nManager Joe Fortune and a Westmeath sideline official were both yellow-carded by referee Seán Cleere soon after for some over-zealous protests. \nTipp almost had a goal when Hayes played in Quinn but Conaty’s outstretched leg deflected the sliotar over the bar. \nTommy Doyle raided forward from wing-back and Williams added two frees as Westmeath clipped three points on the spin to cut the deficit to one\, 0-7 to 0-6. \nBut Tipp pressed the accelerator with a 2-3 burst in the next five minutes. Points from Forde (0-2) and McGrath were followed by two goals in the space of a minute from Kehoe. \nHis first came after Andrew Ormond drew in two defenders to find the Kilsheelan-Kilcash attacker\, while the second was a fine angled finish after being found by Stakelum. \nTipp stretched the lead out to 11 before Westmeath closed the half with the final three points\, from Joey Boyle and Williams (0-2). \nPatrick ‘Bonner’ Maher replaced Kehoe and he had three assists within five minutes as Tipp tacked on the first five points of the second half. He supplied a brilliant goal chance for the unmarked Stakelum\, who just couldn’t keep his shot down. \nStakelum had five points after the break which equalled the impact of the Westmeath subs bench (two each from Killian Doyle and David O’Reilly\, plus one from Ciarán Doyle). \nThey were motoring once the long-ball tactic began to pay dividends. \nAs Mitchell caused panic\, Williams whipped a loose ball to the net in the 53rd minute. \nWithin a minute\, they had a penalty to bring it back to a seven-point game. Barry Heffernan wrestled Mitchell to the turf but he was bailed out by Shelly\, who turned Williams’ strike around the post. \nWilliams landed the 65 to bring it back to nine although Tipp appeared to steady thereafter. \nThe gap was still 10 with four minutes remaining when Westmeath drilled 1-3. DESCRIPTION:Limerick defeated Dublin by 3-30 to 1-18 in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Saturday February 24th at Croke Park. \n\n\nLimerick beat Dublin by 18 points on Kyle Hayes returnhttps://t.co/ERzylOuS6a \n— Irish Examiner Sport (@ExaminerSport) February 24\, 2024 \n  \nLimerick beat Dublin by 18 points on Kyle Hayes return \nAllianz Hurling League Division 1B: Dublin Limerick 3-30 Dublin 1-18  \nReport by Paul Keane for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nKyle Hayes returned to the Limerick team and lasted the duration as the National League holders maintained their 100% record this season\, beating Dublin by 18 points. \nDonnacha O’Dalaigh struck 2-1 and his opening goal after just 13 seconds put John Kiely’s crew on the road to the big win. \nTom Morrissey grabbed the other major and finished with 1-4 while free-taker Adam English helped himself to 0-8. \nThe result leaves Limerick sitting pretty at the head of their group ahead of ties against Tipperary and Galway though Dublin are in real danger now of a bottom three finish\, meaning second tier hurling next season. \nThey have games against Galway and Westmeath to come and with just one win so far\, they need to put points on the board quickly. \nCian O’Sullivan and Donal Burke shared 10 points evenly between them and the return of Burke after a long-term hamstring injury was a giant boost while former captain Chris Crummey\, who didn’t feature in 2023\, also lined out. \nDublin were neck and neck with Limerick for the first 30 minutes or so but played second fiddle thereafter as Limerick’s quality and experience told. \nLimerick went with a much changed lineup from the side that defeated Westmeath in Round 2\, retaining just six players from their lineup in Mullingar. \nOf the nine that came into the team\, four of them – Nickie Quaid\, Mike Casey\, Hayes and Will O’Donoghue – were making their first starts of the league campaign. \nHayes slotted into the familiar left half-back position and was an influential figure throughout the first-half\, scoring a point\, blasting another wide and playing a role in a score for Adam English. \nQuaid impressed on his return to the team too and pulled off two great saves in the first-half to deny Sean Currie and then Cian O’Sullivan goals for Dublin. \nO’Dalaigh was the name on everyone’s lips initially with a brilliant goal for Limerick after just 13 seconds. \nLimerick worked a move from the throw-in that led to Gearoid Hegarty feeding O Dalaigh on the left and his sniper’s shot flew into the far corner. \nThe fear among Dublin supporters may have been of a rout with a three-point handicap essentially placed on them. \nBut they rallied brilliantly and trailed by just a point at the half hour mark. Boss Donoghue made sweeping changes to his team too with James Madden\, Chris Crummey\, Sean Gallagher\, Ronan Hayes\, Donal Burke and Danny Sutcliffe all returning to the starting team. \nBurke jumped onto the frees straight away and converted three in the first-half along with another from a 65. \nInterestingly\, centre-forward Burke had Cathal O’Neill for company as Limerick opted to deploy their own number 11 as a centre-back. David Reidy was named at number six initially but was replaced by Tom Morrissey who switched into the half-forward line. \nMorrissey was excellent in the first-half and finished it with 1-2. His 30th minute goal was a beauty and was struck from a similar angle to O Dalaigh’s earlier major. Hegarty did well in the buildup with a clever diagonal pass to pick out Morrissey. \nO’Neill surged forward for a couple of points late in the half too and Limerick hit the interval with a 2-13 to 0-11 lead.
