The wing-back showed composure in striking low to the net past Kerry debutant goalkeeper Diarmuid Quirke. \nBy the quarter’s end\, the Déise had some breathing room for the first time leading 1-4 to 0-3\, this served as a real catalyst for the visitors who kept doing the right things in the forward line\, moving clear by eight approaching the interval. \nShy of the break Waterford were dealt a double blow. \nConor Prunty was shown a black card for a pull-down on Michael Leane inside the area. Up stepped Conway to dispatch the resulting penalty with a bullet of a strike to the net. \nJack Prendergast capitalised on a Kerry error to notch the second goal for Waterford to lead 2-13 to 1-7 at the end of the third quarter. \nMaurice O’Connor gave Kerry a lifeline with a goal after Dan Goggin turned over possession close to the Déise net\, the gap was now down to six. \nWaterford showed their strength to score a third goal after the hour mark. \nMichael Kiely\, grabbing a third assist\, set up Paudie Fitzgerald to strike from close range to rubber-stamp the result. \nConway would strike a second penalty to the net a few short minutes later. The showers kept coming and kept pelting those who had to be here and those whose sanity you’d question for being here of their own volition. \nThe post-Christmas restlessness would want to have been particularly acute to drag you out into the unsheltered elements of Clarecastle on this squally and sopping Wednesday night. \nOn January 3\, season 2024 didn’t so much roll out the good table cloth in welcome as it did force a half-time change of clothes. \nMark Fitzgerald went without his hat in the second half. The rain\, mercifully\, held quiet. It allowed a passage or two of actual football be played. \nBehind by 0-4 to 0-3 at the break\, Ciaran Downes converted three successive frees in the eight minutes after the restart to double Clare’s total and direct them into a two-point lead. \nMention here too for the three home players\, Ronan Lannigan\, Shane Griffin\, and Dermot Coughlan\, who won the three converted frees. \nDuring a horrid opening half\, young Griffin had been muscled off possession by the vastly more experienced Mattie Taylor. Winning as he did that early second half free drew a clinched fist of delight from the Lissycasey corner-forward. \nIt was one of few second-half Clare wins. After the third of Downes’ placed-ball kicks\, the Banner endured a barren spell running 25 minutes. \nA Daniel Walsh point attempt dropped short on 48 minutes finished with a Darragh Cashman white flag at the far end. Cashman\, making his competitive full Cork debut\, impressed with a pair of points. Along with the experimenting of Brian O’Driscoll at No. 7\, Cork have options plenty in the half-back line. \nCashman’s point began a 2-7 burst. The opening 1-2 of that game-sealing tally arrived in a three-minute hurry. \nCork’s opening green flag of the year belonged to Conor Corbett. He palmed to the net a rare passage of flow that included the quick hands of O’Driscoll and Paul Walsh. The game’s outstanding point also belonged to Corbett from out near the far sideline. \nBeyond 2019 minors Corbett and Cashman\, the other standout Cork positive was the bench press. \nMark Cronin kicked 1-3\, Chris Óg Jones landed 0-2. 1-5 from the dugout three days into the new year keeps everyone on their toes. Cronin’s goal\, six minutes from time\, was clinically stitched into the corner. \nIan Maguire\, among the nine Cork subs used\, made his presence felt with a couple of assists. Nothing new there\, says you. \nAnother replacement\, Ruairí Deane had to be helped from the astroturf close to full-time with what appeared to be an ankle injury. \nThe overall bench impact was rather welcome given only one member of the travelling front six – the aforementioned Corbett – chalked a flag from play. \nThat there wasn’t a massive amount of experimentation in the Cork selection says that John Cleary and Kevin Walsh\, now into the second year of their partnership\, know who and what they want. That’s certainly no bad thing. \nAn opening night win notched\, Cork aren’t out again until January 14 when they host Waterford. \nClare are in Lemybrien this Sunday. They’ll chase a few corrections from here. Timmy Daly (Churchill)\, the head groundsperson who rendered the field as playable as anyone could after a month of hard Kerry rain – and an inter-county hurling game the evening prior. \nEarly doors\, of course\, but at least any half-conclusions from the night’s opening McGrath Cup exchanges had a ring of authenticity about them\, rendering all the aquatic clichés unnecessary. \nFor Kerry’s goalkeepers\, it was all a little too real as the clock ticked down the throw in: Dr Crokes’ Shane Murphy limping out of the warm-up after an unwelcome hamstring twinge\, prompting an unexpected debut for Beaufort’s Sean Coffey\, the son of legendary ladies stylist Mary Joe Curran. Paul Kelly has been appointed new gaffer and\, if the local bush telegraph is accurate\, hasn’t been slow to draw his lines in the ground. His side could have turned their ass to this after the early double-blow\, but they played their way into the half\, and Clonmel’s Sean O’Connor helped himself to five first-half points. Nominally a corner forward\, he dropped into midfield with his sizeable frame out of possession\, but moved and looped like a natural inside forward for two points from play\, a pair of converted frees and a mark. \nKerry held the advantage of the early goals into the break\, 2-7 to 0-7\, their last point a sweet effort from the left foot of Beaufort’s Sean O’Brien. He was one of seven green and gold tyros making a first senior start\, but the man making the big early impression was Joe O’Connor. The midfielder was making his first start in well over a year after an ACL rupture. Often the biggest impediment to getting it all back is psychological but O’Connor showed no ill-effects as he impressed in aerial combat. \nMicheal Burns was busy\, and pointed really well after holding off tight Tipp marking in the 17th minute to make it 2-4 to 0-3. However it was Tipp less pleased to hear the half time whistle as they bagged three points in a row before Barry Dan O’Sullivan and Beaufort’s O’Brien restored Kerry’s six-point lead. \nKerry made a raft of interval changes\, and not just because of that\, the crowd lost the will to stay engaged. They were never in any real danger once they generated a head of steam and travel plans for next weekend were being hatched in the crowd long before the finish. \nThere was a yawning gulf in class in the opening half as the Kerry men dominated possession and territory while Lahardane struggled in almost every department. Listowel went to the dressingroom with a healthy 10-point lead\, 1-8 to 0-1\, and they fully deserved the advantage given the standard of their display. \nEnda Murphy’s men were faster\, stronger and much more decisive than the Connacht champions who became more frustrated with every passing moment. The Mayo men also fell foul of referee Kevin Faloon who moved frees forward on numerous occasions after his decisions were questioned. \nListowel ruled the airways around the middle with Eddie Browne\, Joe Joe Grimes\, and Darragh Leahy winning much more than their share of the ball. There were times in the first half when Lahardane were cleaned out on their own kick-out and the decisive score of the match arrived after 19 minutes when a short-kick out was gobbled up by Bryan Sweeney and he calmly chipped retreatinig goalkeeper Joe Queenan to puit his side seven clear\, 1-4 to 0-0. \nAt that stage\, Lahardane had been restricted to just one effort at the posts\, a speculative shot from Adrian Leonard which drifted wide\, an in truth the result was almost decided at that stage. \nListowel were just vastly superior in every dimension and prevented Lahardane from building even the slightest sense of momentum. David Keane was very accurate from frees and Sean Keane looked dangerous every time the ball came his way in attack. \nNiall Collins was powerful\, composed and comfortable behind midfield for the Munster men and with Eddie Healy racing forward from the half-back line Lahardane were pinned back consistently. \nFull-forward Cormac Mulvihill used the ball well when it came his way and kicked three fine points to leave the men in amber and black more than comfortable at the interval\, leading 1-8 to 0-1. \nThey stretched the lead to 12 early in the new half when Sweeney and David Keane split the sticks but\, amazingly\, the scores dried up after that and despite dominating matters the leaders went 21 minutes without raising a flag. \nListowel still owned the ball and refused to give Lahardane a sniff of a revival in their fallow period\, but will look to be more productive in the final next weekend against Ulster champions Arva from Cavan. \nThe leaders found their shooting boots again momentarily in the run-in when substitute Darragh Lynch converted a free but they had been dree-wheeling home long before hand. \nLahardane finished on the front foot with pointed frees from Darragh Walsh and James Maughan but the Mayo men were crestfallen at the end\, having never once found their feet at the end of a season which yielded so many great moments. The opposition net was twice shook in the space of 29 seconds to take the Cork and Munster champions from one behind to five in front. \nMicheál Ó Deasúna finished first. He palmed home a sweeping move involving Ciarán and Daniel Ó Duinnín. \nThe ensuing restart was sent straight to Maidhcí Ó Duinnín. He passed to Daniel Ó Duinnín. A neat step and toe poke had Cill na Martra dreaming. 2-8 to 0-9. \nIf those two goals saw their ticket to Croke Park punched\, they spent the next 25 minutes holding onto said ticket for dear life. \nCill na Martra wouldn’t score again for another 14 minutes. Castlerea spun three on the bounce in the meantime. Darren McDermott\, Padraig Joyce\, and Shane Keenan the providers. The gap back to two. \nTwo separate exchanges of points meant the gap was still at two heading into injury-time (2-10 to 0-14). And what a drama-oozing six minutes of injury-time we got. \nJack Keane and Eoghan O’Connell both had goal chances to sneak Castlerea in front. Both were denied by the most last ditch of defending. Goalkeeper Pádraig Ó Críodáin and the forest of white shirts in front of him stood dense. \nAdam McDermott’s fifth free left the minimum between them on 65 minutes. Referee Brendan Cawley afforded Castlerea an opportunity to engineer an equaliser. They couldn’t. Cill na Martra continue on to meet St Patrick’s Cullynanna on Sunday week. \nThe sides were tied come the half-time tea. They shared the same 0-6 total\, they did not share the same half-time reflections. \nCastlerea\, having lost midfielder Michael Conroy to a black card midway through the half and having spent the entire half leaning on full-forward Adam McDermott to fashion and finish scores\, were delighted with themselves to be on level footing with the Cork champions. \nThe Cork champions\, meanwhile\, would have been privately disgusted at not being in front. \nCill na Martra kicked four first-half wides\, Castlerea kicked none. Ciarán Ó Duinnín was short\, Micheál Ó Deasúna was too slow with his shot and had it smothered. \nJohn Evans’ lads had more possession\, more opportunities. They were\, though\, without urgency. They were strangely lax for an All-Ireland semi-final. They went into the 10-minute period of numerical advantage 0-4 to 0-3 in front. They came out of it pegged back at 0-5 apiece. \nMaidhcí Ó Duinnín\, Daniel Ó Duinnín\, Micheál Ó Deasúna (0-2 frees)\, Colm Mac Lochlainn\, and Damien Ó hUrdail all split the posts as Cill na Martra never trailed at any point in the opening half. Bobby Nugent\, Brian Derwin and Ben O’Carroll were all on target with some wonderful points\, as they kept every single effort on target and delighted the 3\,352 crowd with some sumptuous interplay. \nCastlehaven looked strong at midfield where Mark Collins and Andrew Whelton dominated the battle for contested kickout and generally offered a powerful physical presence\, while up front\, Michael Hurley was lively\, shaking off any pre-match injury concerns\, and Cathal Maguire was direct and effective at centre forward. \nHowever most of the analysis in advance of this tie focused on the importance of the battle between the two county stars\, Brian Hurley and Brian Stack – and after an incredible 2023 campaign where he bested more or less every direct opponent\, Stack had his hands full with Hurley today\, conceding three points from play and also two converted frees. \nYet in the first half\, the West Cork side simply couldn’t get enough ball into the hands of their attackers\, and they could only watch as Roscommon U-20 star Bobby Nugent kicked three points\, with Ben O’Carroll adding two\, as well as setting up a close range goal for Brian Derwin. \n1-7 to 0-4 after 26 minutes was a fair reflection of the contest up to that point\, but points from Brian Hurley and Maguire before half-time gave Castlehaven something to hold onto\, and they carried on in the same vein after half-time. \nThat St. Brigid’s allowed the Cork champions back into things couldn’t be disputed. Paul McGrath did brilliantly to intercept a handpass just 25 metres out from the Castlehaven goal and with the defence wrong-footed\, he had the ball with colleagues either side and just one defender to beat. Sean Ryan struck 1-12 for Liam Cahill’s charges. \nThere was a covering of frost in front of the stand but sun covered the rest of the pitch. The match was delayed by five minutes due to crowd congestion at the turnstiles. 1\,500 tickets were pre-sold for this fixture. \nThe teams bore little resemblance to their last competitive meeting in the Munster championship last May. In Clarecastle the All-Ireland champions returned to action for the first time in 2024 and overcame rivals Clare by five points in their Munster Hurling League clash. \nJohn Kiely was a content figure post-match having watched all six of his starting front eight score\, Patrick O’Donovan leading the way with seven points from nine shots. \n“Decent performance overall\,” said the Limerick manager boss. \n“Plenty of errors in there but at the same time our intent was good. We used the ball well. We worked hard. A lot of fresh faces out there\, great to get them on the pitch and get game time into them and have a look at them. All told\, a good workout.” \nClare vs Limerick means a sell-out regardless of the season. It means an uncompromising and competitive contest with the odd collision crossing the line\, Shane Meehan picking up a yellow card for a high hurley tackle on Micheal Houlihan in the opening half and David Reidy receiving similar after catching goalkeeper Jamie Power\, a late change for David McCarthy who was not in the matchday panel. \nNickie Quaid backed up on the bench. \nIt means classic Limerick shooting\, peppering the posts and racking up six wides before Clare hit one. Marty Murphy fired the other goal for Tullogher Rosbercon and it arrived in the opening minutes to put them on the road to success. \nHaving blasted 18 goals since capturing the Kilkenny title\, it was another impressive show of their scoring ability from Michael Doyle’s side who will operate at the intermediate ranks in Kilkenny in 2024. \nSt Catherine’s dared to dream after bouncing back from their county final defeat – victors Erins Own couldn’t compete in Munster because it was their second team – with a strong provincial campaign that included a win over former All-Ireland junior winners Ardmore of Waterford. \nBut they struggled to put Sligo champions Easkey away at the All-Ireland semi-final stage\, winning by 0-12 to 0-11\, and were under real pressure straight away here. \nIt didn’t help that they were shorn of key figures like Daniel Mangan and Darragh Morrisson through injuries picked up earlier in the campaign though both were named as substitutes. \nTullogher Rosbercon took full advantage and with only nine minutes played were already 1-5 to 0-1 up. \nThey dominated in all the key areas; off their own puck-out and\, crucially\, off the St Catherine’s puck-out while their power and stickwork and the individual ability of Walsh all combined to leave the Munster champions with a giant headache. \nMurphy sniped the first Tullogher Rosbercon goal after just three minutes and showed his ingenuity to strike to the net with a batted finish from close range\, making sure trailing defender Kian O’Donoghue didn’t have the opportunity to hook him. \nA great catch from Oisin Fitzgerald was a feature of the buildup to that goal and when Walsh made a similar catch in the 15th minute and took off on a blistering solo run through the centre\, there seemed only one outcome. \nIt duly transpired that way as the 2012 All-Ireland final replay hero for Kilkenny hammered the ball to the net for his team’s second goal. Walsh hit 1-3 on his Kilkenny debut in that famous game against Galway in 2012 and had 1-2 racked up by half-time on this occasion. \nFree-taker O’Donoghue filled his boots too\, racking up eight points in the first-half alone. St Catherine’s player Shane Cotter talked beforehand about competing in a 2006 All-Ireland minor semi-final for Cork at Croke Park\, a day when a young Joe Canning slotted a point from a sideline cut for victors Galway. \nCotter winced again 18 years on as O’Donoghue this time sliced over a score from a line ball beneath the Cusack Stand. It was all too easy for the Kilkenny men and one passage of play summed up their dominance. \nRory Galvin sniped a 14th minute point for St Catherne’s after a ball was kicked out of a ruck to him\, a rare score that relied on a piece of craft. Not even the great Henry Shefflin could steer them to the promised land when he took over for a spell in 2021. \nNoel Doherty has managed to do it this season though\, firstly presiding over a landmark county success and then guiding an utterly determined and singled minded group of Thomastown players to provincial and now national honours. \nTruth be told\, they never looked like losing this final and\, save for a wobble for 10 minutes or so midway through the first-half\, were always in control. \nJohn Donnelly\, in Kilkenny’s team for last July’s All-Ireland senior hurling final against Limerick\, was highly influential too and scored four points while Robbie Donnelly\, on the frees and placed balls\, top scored with nine points. \nThere were strong cameos as well from last year’s county U-20 players Luke Connellan and Zach Bay Hammond while the entire defence stood firm with just 0-13 conceded. \nIt was a tough defeat for Castlelyons to take as they experienced their own final setbacks within Cork in recent seasons before finally claiming the Premier Intermediate title down south before blitzing Munster. \nThomastown are the eighth Kilkenny team to claim the All-Ireland intermediate crown and look set to make a big impact now on the senior scene locally. \nSetting up with Niall O’Leary as their sweeper\, Castlelyons sought to stifle Thomastown’s attack and to exploit the wide open spaces at the other end where David Morrison and Anthony Spillane operated in a two-man inside forward line. \nThe Cork and Munster champions found it tough going at the start and didn’t get a score on the board until the 14th minute when placed ball expert Alan Fenton\, their top scorer with 0-7\, split the posts. \nIn the meantime\, Thomastown hit five points – three from Robbie Donnelly and two from John Donnelly – and appeared to have little trouble cutting through the Castlelyons defence. \nShooting became a problem for Thomastown though and six wides in a relatively brief period\, and seven in the first-half\, allowed Castlelyons to come back into it. \nThat opening Castlelyons score by Fenton was followed by points from O’Leary and an Oscar Hallihan pearler from the left wing and suddenly there was just two points in it\, 0-5 to 0-3. \nThat was as close as the gap got though and Thomastown finished the half strong with two three-point bursts to lead by 0-11 to 0-6 at the interval. \nBoth sides had goal opportunities in that opening half. Stephen Donnelly was denied in the 15th minute while Anthony Spillane was twice denied for Castlelyons\, once by a well-timed Peter Connellan challenge and then by goalkeeper Diarmuid Galway. \nStephen Donnelly\, a former Kilkenny U-20 who briefly featured for the seniors under Brian Cody\, eventually got his goal after the restart and it was a beauty when it arrived. \nJohn Donnelly did the spadework with a surging run up the left before cleverly hand-passing across to Donnelly who was in acres of space in a central position 20 metres out. Truth be told\, Arva could have won by more given their dominance in the second-half. \nMan of the Match Brady and midfield colleague Tristan Noack Hofmann had huge games for the Ulster champions. \nFree-taker Kevin Bouchier helped himself to four points too while Peter Morris’ three points were significant as well. \nArva were boosted by the availability of Conal Sheridan and Thomas Partington\, both of whom were doubtful following injuries in last weekend’s semi-final defeat of Kildare and Leinster champions Milltown. \nFinbarr O’Reilly’s side kicked the first two points too\, from skipper Brady\, who was played in by midfield colleague Noack Hofmann\, and then Morris. \nBut the Ulster side\, a senior outfit as recently as 2017\, paid a high price for a series of poor wides after that with Morris\, Sheridan and Bouchier all missing from reasonably straightforward positions. \nEddie Healy did something similar at the other end after a terrific solo run up the field for Listowel who didn’t score themselves until the 14th minute when Cormac Mulvihill finally split the posts. \nThat score seemed to ignite the Kerry men who enjoyed a strong second quarter\, outscoring Arva by 0-7 to 0-2 from the 14th minute until half-time. \nMulvihill and free-taker David Keane accounted for a brace of points apiece. \nArva were under pressure and it was only momentarily relieved when Hofmann\, the former Irish underage soccer international and League of Ireland player\, clipped over a tidy 19th minute point. \nThe Ulster champions\, who defeated Ballymaguigan\, Lisnaskea and Blackhill to claim their provincial title\, must have known that scores were going to be hard to come by. \nListowel had only conceded 2-2\, 1-2 and 0-3 tallies in their three games since collecting the Kerry junior title by beating Ballymacelligott after extra-time. \nWith former Cork senior footballer Joe Joe Grimes at midfield\, and captain Niall Collins spinning over a beauty on the run from the left wing\, Listowel were full value for their 0-7 to 0-4 half-time lead. \nThere was an intriguing few minutes immediately after the restart as Arva returned reinvigorated and piled on the pressure but\, true to the pattern of the first-half\, their wasteful play cost them. \nThey carved out five scoring chances in the first five minutes of the second-half but only Brady and Bouchier converted with Partington striking a couple of poor wides and Noack Hofmann hitting the post with a free. \nListowel weren’t in a position to capitalise on those misses and when they did launch a heart-raising breakaway at the other end\, Arva full-back James Morris came flying from nowhere to block Bryan Sweeney’s shot. \nA real barnburner was in full flow now and after fighting back to level terms at 0-8 and 0-9 apiece\, Arva took the lead for the first time through Bouchier in the 47th minute. \nThey were a man up at that stage as Listowel lost Ger McCarthy to a black card sin-binning for a wild lunge at Noack Hofmann. \nArva continued to be wasteful and spurned a couple more decent chances but still stretched the gap to two and then three points with scores from Bouchier and Peter Morris. \nWhen Brady put them four ahead in stoppage time they were in dreamland with the finishing line close at hand. \nGrimes struck to the net for Listowel in the 63rd minute and while there was controversy as it was ruled out for a free in the build up\, it would have been only consolation anyway. \nArva scorers: K Bouchier (3 frees)\, C Brady (0-4 each); I am happy with the win but it is how we perform that I am looking at\,” he said. \n“We have a young team. Defensively and athletically we improved on our last game. We are five or six weeks behind where I would like our preparations to be so it was nice to see the team driving on in the closing stages.” \nIn what was always a tightly contested affair\, Tipperary moved 0-4 to 0-1 clear after 16 minutes\, goalkeeper Evan Comerford pointing two frees before retiring injured. Limerick’s James Naughton hit three points from frees for the visitors to level by the 34th minute but on the stroke of half-time Stephen O Brien pointed a forty five to give Tipp a 0-5 to 0-4 advantage at the break. \nThe second half followed a similar pattern with Tipperary just keeping their noses in front. On the hour mark they led 0-8 to 0-7 and the crucial score came after 65 minutes when Luke Shanahan punished a handling error in the Limerick defence to score a Tipperary goal. \nTipperary finished the stronger and comfortably protected their four points advantage to the end. \nWith Tipp’s opening game in division four of the National Football League against Carlow two weeks away\, the injury to goalkeeper Comerford is a concern for Kelly. \n“We don’t really know at this stage how he is. This McGrath Cup decider would instead proceed straight to penalties. \nWelcome January silverware for Cork. The New Year might only be three weeks old\, but for a building group off to Jim McGuinness country next weekend\, they’ll never not appreciate turning over a market leader\, even if that market leader was of only middling strength. \nPatrick Doyle was the shootout saviour. The Cork goalkeeper\, between the sticks while Micheál Aodh Martin continues to rehab a groin injury\, struck Cork’s opening penalty and saved Kerry’s fourth from Darragh Roche. Kerry’s third taker\, Micheál Burns\, had lifted his effort over the crossbar. \nThese back-to-back misses handed the initiative to the hosts. Barry Dan O’Sullivan had to nail Kerry’s final penalty. He did. It was not enough. \nMark Cronin\, following the successful dispatches of Doyle\, Fionn Herlihy\, and Chris Óg Jones\, delivered the winning kick. \nPenalties were required after Cork twice answered lead Kerry scores on the run in. Blake Murphy replied to Darragh Roche’s second free. \nTwo minutes into injury-time\, sub Darragh Cashman displayed the necessary composure and confidence to cancel out Micheál Burns’ white flag of a minute earlier. \nIt was a second half where Cork wouldn’t let go of their opponents and their opponents squandered the opportunities to make more strenuous Cork’s need for constant answering. \nThe hosts turned around for the second period 1-7 to 0-7 in arrears. By the 47th minute\, the hosts were ahead. 1-10 to 1-9. \nA Chris Óg Jones goal on 43 minutes\, either side of white flags from Brian O’Driscoll\, Eoghan McSweeney\, and Luke Fahy was the Cork comeback. \nTom O’Sullivan and Seán O’Shea were short at the far end. Stephen O’Brien and Keith Evans were wide. \nThese misses were not replicated by Cork. They pushed two in front with a quarter of an hour remaining. \nA Kerry three-in-a-row from subs Conor Geaney and Roche (two frees) forced Cork into further comeback efforts. They provided all the right answers. \nA robust first half had preceded it. Tackles and turnovers trumped flare and finesse. The message: You’ll get nothing soft today. \nO’Driscoll soon got the same message delivered back to him. Newcomer Cillian Burke crowded and crowbarred possession from him. The turnover ended with a Brian Ó Beaglaoich goal shot saved by Patrick Doyle. \nBurke\, a few minutes further on\, was forced into overcarrying possession and coughed up a free. Doyle was later guilty of dragging Cork into a corner from which they coughed up the ball. The Kerry press on this latter instance was hard and high. \nIn short\, there was nobody getting away with anything. Well\, almost nobody. \nCork centre-forward David Buckley and the Kerry pair of Joe O’Connor and Killian Spillane were the exceptions. \nSpillane kicked three first half points off the left. He was the one who dislodged the ball from Luke Fahy during the above mentioned Kerry press. O’Connor was equally effective around the middle. \nOn the Cork side\, Buckley won and converted three opening half frees. He also added a fourth from play. He had the far more experienced Paul Murphy in bother. \nCork led 0-6 to 0-4 after the third of Buckley’s frees. Kerry then came with a charge. Seán O’Shea (free) and Burke tied proceedings before the arrival of the final’s first green flag. \nStand-in ‘keeper Doyle was penalised for faffing too long over a restart. Referee Donnacha O’Callaghan awarded a throw-in. \nThe ball was pushed goal bound. Dylan Geaney snapped and stitched. Conor Geaney finds the net for @Kerry_Official – just 1 point between the sides #GAANOW pic.twitter.com/t3IxeRSmqF \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) January 27\, 2024 \n \n\nThose green flags came in the final quarter as Kerry cut a six-point deficit\, 0-10 to 0-4\, after 40 minutes back to parity\, 2-7 to 0-13\, by the 64th minute\, but the hosts seemed to lack the composure to engineer a lead score. \nStephen O’Brien was put through on goal in the 66th minute\, but inexplicably tried to find a marked Sean O’Shea with a pass when an easy point or more difficult shot on goal were the wiser options. \nEarlier in the half Jason Foley was probably the wrong man in the right place when Dara Moynihan picked his full back out with a great pass\, but Odhran Lynch was out quickly and bravely to save at Foley’s feet. \nPlaying with a stiff wind in the first half\, Derry set up as Derry tend to do – with all bodies behind the ball when defending\, and then breaking at speed on the counter-offensive. Three minutes in and the system worked a treat – the visitors turning over a Kerry attack\, Ethan Doherty doing the main haulage of the ball and Glass delivering the game’s first score. \nFour minutes later Brian Ó Beaglaoich set up Sean O’Shea for a Kerry equaliser\, and in the 11th minute O’Shea converted a free after a foul on Joe O’Connor\, but thereafter for the majority of the first half Derry were on top. \nThree points in quick succession from full back\, Chrissy McKaigue\, Shane McGuigan and wing-back had Derry two ahead after 16 minutes\, a lead they led 0-7 to 0-2 after 25 minutes\, with Glass and Brendan Rogers having the upperhand at midfield on Joe O’Connor and debutant Sean O’Brien. \nSean O’Shea (free) and Moynihan scored to cut the gap back to three points before Rogers fired Derry into a 0-8 to 0-4 half time lead. Surrendering almost all of their eight-point lead\, it took a Ruairí McCann goal to wrestle back control over a new-look Treaty outfit. \nAndy McEntee will be thrilled with the success\, particularly when the Saffrons had collected just a brace of wins in their league season in 2023. They were far more efficient in attack\, with Limerick’s wastefulness symptomatic of their slump over the last 12 months. \nThis game had a brace of penalties\, four goals and two black cards – all shared evenly between the two sides\, but the telling difference was Limerick’s shooting. As well as eight wides\, they had two efforts hit the posts\, while a number also fell short. Antrim\, by contrast\, looked more assured when shooting\, especially in the opening half. \nEoin Hynds opened the scoring from the first play\, with a Michael Byrne free doubling the Antrim advantage. Captain Iain Corbett replied for Limerick\, with a trademark run cutting through an organised defence. \nPlaying with the gusting breeze\, McEntee’s men picked holes in a new-look Limerick rearguard and found the net from a 22nd-minute penalty. After collecting a dropping shot\, keeper Aaron O’Sullivan coughed up the ball and fouled Niall Burnes\, with Dominic McEnhill converting. \nIt was 1-7 to 0-2 by the time Ruairí McCann (Cregán) opened his account on 30 minutes\, but bothers Robbie and Tommie Childs kicked the last two points for Limerick to cut the gap. \nDermot McAleese was black carded for a body check on Paul Maher seconds into the second period\, though the amount of contact was disputed by the Antrim captain. This gave Limerick the impetus – first O’Sullivan knocked over a 45\, before Corbett sailed over another. \nCorbett\, by far the most experienced player in the Limerick panel\, brought the score to 1-6 to 1-7 when he netted a penalty\, which was conceded by Byrne who was adjudged to have lay on the ball in the square. \nThe Shannonsiders were wasteful\, with Corbett and clubmate Eoin Hurley kicking wides when they looked to have all the momentum. This was punished when Antrim found their feet with three quick points. \nBack to 15 men\, McCann\, Byrne and McEnhill reopened the four-point margin\, but Limerick got their second goal on 56 minutes. Forcing a turnover\, Tommie Childs struck first time to the top corner. But Patrick McBrearty would score 1-6 and Odhran Doherty’s three at a stage in the contest when it was still in the melting pot\, were important. \nAnother factor and a considerable one at that\, was the breeze\, with the ripples on the back of Donegal’s sorts in the opening half. After their Dr McKenna Cup loss to Derry\, on a windy night in Omagh eight nights beforehand\, McGuinness admitted they had won the toss and\, a little perversely\, played their best passages of play came against it and not with it. \nIn Ballybofey\, their intentions were clear from the start\, kicking over the first four scores inside of eight minutes\, two of which came from McBrearty’s frees. \nCork had little of the ball initially and saw Hurley miss a pretty routine free\, although he was back involved moments later\, in the 15th minute\, when the visitors finally for off the mark. Hurley\, Ian Maguire\, Ruairi Deane all played cameos before a slap-in goal from Eoghan McSweeney. \nBrian O’Drissoll\, with the first of two first-half scores\, brought Cork level at 1-1 to 0-4 and\, as conditions worsened\, Donegal looked to be losing their way. \nHowever\, Doherty pointed the way\, with three excellent long-rangers\, making the most of the wind\, and Ryan McHugh. Ciaran Thompson and Peadar Mogan followed suit\, to give Donegal a lead of 0-9 to 1-2 four minutes before half-time. \nJones pulled another one back from Cork\, although Donegal – perhaps taking collective responsibility in the absence of their main score-getter Gallen – finished the half well. Daire Ó Baoill\, Brendan McCole and Shane O’Donnell added the names to the scoresheet\, meaning the side managed by McGuinness had nine different first-half scorers. \nAt the break\, they were 0-12 to 1-3 ahead\, although every member of the 5\,092 in attendance knew the second half was likely to be an entirely different affair. \nDonegal pushed up and pinned Cork in\, scoring the opening two points of the second half\, through McBrearty and Ó Baoill. But for Patrick Doyle in the Cork goal\, that might’ve been more as he narrowed the angle and got behind a Thomspon swing on the ground. \nAt the other end\, Gavin Mulreany had to be alert too\, getting down well to stop an O’Driscoll from Cork’s first meaningful attack of the second half\, eight minutes in. Moments later\, Mulreany was knicking over a free\, so 50 minutes in\, Donegal were 0-15 to 1-3 up. \nA Cork goal\, though\, showed them a track\, when they were losing their way. A Donegal attack broke down and Deane’s long ball bounced over McCole and with Mulreany up the field\, Chris Óg Jones skipped away and stroked into the empty net on 51. Darragh came in there\, filling those shoes\, and did very well. You need to have a focal point and Darragh was that for us today.” \nSecond-half goals from Evan Sweeney and Riordan O’Rourke sealed a comprehensive win for the promotion hopefuls\, their first victory since March 19\, 2023. “We didn’t mention it all week but we haven’t won a game since we lost to Sligo in the last game of the league last year. It was very important for us to win that game.” \nBeirne wasn’t named on the Leitrim panel for the trip to Fraher Field. \n“He’s working very hard away from it to try and get back in\,” Moran explained. “It’s a waiting process. We just have to see if Keith wants to commit and if he puts in the work to get back in. If he does\, it would be great. What a player and we would love to have him back in at some stage.” \nWaterford boss Paul Shankey was disappointed with four missed goal opportunities including a late penalty from Jason Curry. “You have to take your chances. If you don’t take your chances at this level\, you get punished. We left a lot behind. Very happy with the effort\, very happy with what has gone on in the last couple of weeks but we have to be a little more clinical.” \nThe Déise were down ten starters from their last Tailteann Cup match of 2023 against Tipperary. Shankey gave league debuts to Robbie McGrath\, Michael O’Brien and Willie Beresford. \nWind assisted Leitrim led 0-7 to 0-2 at the break. Darragh Rooney delivered four points (three frees). Defender Jamie McGreal got the score of the half off the outside of his right boot. \nMichael Curry kicked Waterford’s first point on 17 minutes after a pinpoint pass from Willie Beresford. Midfield partner Jack Keane blasted a goal chance over the bar. \nRooney added four more to his tally within four minutes of the restart (two from play and two from frees) as Leitrim cracked the Waterford kickout. Barry McNulty then punched the ball off the crossbar. On 50 minutes\, Rooney supplied substitute Evan Sweeney who flicked to the net (1-12 to 0-3). \nWaterford replied two minutes later as Alan Dunwoody crossed for Dermot Ryan to fist home. Ryan rifled over 1-2 in the second half. \nDéise substitute Tom O’Connell won a penalty eight minutes from time but Nevin O’Donnell denied Jason Curry from the spot.
