DESCRIPTION:Kerry defeated Cork by 2-10 to 0-11 in the Electric Ireland Minor Football Championship Final on June 2nd at Austin Stack Park Tralee. \n\nGoals key as Kerry keep Cork quiet to land Munster minor title  \nKerry 2-10 Cork 0-11   \nReport by Eoghan Cormican for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nEfficient rather than excellent\, Kerry shut down and shut out Cork to reverse last month’s quarter-final result between the counties and wrestle back the Munster minor crown. \nThe five-point victory delivers the Kingdom a 51st Munster title and progresses them to an All-Ireland quarter-final against beaten Leinster finalists Kildare next weekend. Cork\, meanwhile\, must regroup for a daunting last-eight bout with Dublin. \nThis was a Munster final serviced far more by mistakes than scores. So often the wrong decision was taken\, a fact of proceedings that was amplified late on as Cork chased an equalising goal. \nThe required green flag never looked like emerging. Kerry’s every-man-behind-the-wheel approach in the closing minutes made certain of that. \nKerry’s two injury-time points to wrap the green and gold ribbons around the silverware were breakaway scores. The final’s closing white flag – a Paddy Lane free – saw Cork’s Frank Hurley black carded. Having already picked up an earlier yellow\, the full-back’s removal constituted a sending-off. \nThe outcome of this Munster final had been much less clear-cut when Cork kicked the opening three points of the second period to draw level\, 2-4 to 0-10\, on 42 minutes. The problem for the visitors was the energy expended in getting back on parity. \nThere had been two goal chances – one off the crossbar and one saved – and two wides\, along with the three points from David O’Leary\, Dara Sheedy\, and Timothy Cullinane. \nFor all their third quarter pressure and probing\, Cork would have hoped for a bigger return. \nPaddy Lane’s 46th minute free was Kerry’s first score of the second period. The resultant Cork kickout was won by the opposition. It was a recurring theme all evening. Tomás Kennedy promptly sent the ball back between the posts. \nLane’s fourth free reestablished Kerry’s three-point interval buffer. Just like that\, they had wiped out Cork’s recovery work. Their economy in attack was way superior to their opponents. \nCork managed only one score from the 42nd minute onwards. Kerry overpopulated their defence in the fourth quarter\, issuing a strict barring order in the scoring zone. \nCork had had the breeze at their backs in the opening half. You wouldn’t have known such from the half-time scoreline. 2-4 to 0-7 they trailed. Kerry is home to many difficult and steep climbs. Name any one of those mountains and they’d have aptly captured the second half task facing the visitors. \nKerry’s second green flag was the Collins Dictionary definition of a sucker punch. Cork’s two previous attacks had finished in a Séan Coakley wide and a David O’Leary point attempt blocked down. \nEither of them would have nudged Cork back in front. Instead\, Ray O’Mahony’s charges found themselves three behind. \nThe assist for Kerry’s second goal on the half hour mark\, the same as the first\, was provided by number three Ben Murphy. The finish was applied by Dara Hogan. \nIt was Hogan’s fellow corner-forward Paddy Lane who had supplied their opening major on 22 minutes. On that occasion\, a handpass to Odhran Foley wasn’t taken cleanly by the Cork half-back\, Murphy gathered the breaking ball\, and delivered a lovely kickass inside to Lane who had got on the right side of his marker. \nThe goals were so hurtful to a Cork team who were getting their hands on plenty of possession\, but lacking in ideas and invention when it came to picking locks in Kerry’s defensive set-up. \nIt certainly didn’t help the travelling cause that their two go-to figures in attack\, Dara Sheedy and Séan Coakley\, were receiving the most suffocating of attention from Gearoid Evans and David Mulvihill respectively. Evans and Mulvihill did their jobs superbly\, as did the rotating Kerry sweepers. \nThe acres of green grass Cork ran into and made hay from during their Munster quarter-final win over the Kingdom last month were fenced off here with barbed wire. \nThe other issue for Cork in that opening half was retaining possession from their own kickouts. Sean Ó Cuinn’s 12th minute point to tie matters at 0-3 apiece came from a third consecutive Cork restart won by a player in green and gold. That the ensuing restart was also lost made it a four-in-a-row of Kerry takes. \nThe goalkeeper in question\, Billy Curtin\, came forward to kick a free shortly after and when Coakley followed a minute later with a point from play\, Cork were 0-5 to 0-3 in front. The remainder of the half went 2-1 to 0-2 in favour of the home side. While both sides created an equal number of chances\, the Premier had Jack Kennedy kicking most of theirs and that helped them build a 0-9 to 0-2 lead by the half-hour. \nThe Clonmel Commercials dangerman kicked five (0-3 from play) plus another spectacular effort from his brother Conall. \nWhile it took Waterford 21 minutes to score\, through a Darragh Corcoran free\, they were carving out goal chances. Corcoran forced Michael O’Reilly into a fine low save and Jason Gleeson flicked over after they failed to make the best of another opening. \nGleeson created their 31st-minute breakthrough\, with Conor Murray latching on to rifle low to the net. \nThat sparked a 1-2 run\, a heavy blow to any hopes of Tipp clawing back their score difference disadvantage\, although they steadied with one last Jack Kennedy free. 0-10 to 1-4 at half-time. \nThe Déise kicked on with four of the first five points to level for the first time within seven minutes of the restart. Clifford outscored the Rebels by 1-2 to 0-1 in that 10-minute spell with an extra man. He ended with 1-5. \nTheir first meeting back at Páirc Uí Chaoimh since Mark Keane’s shock strike knocked the Kingdom out of the Covid Championship in 2020 ended with another high ball raining down on the Kerry defence. This time\, 14\,081 fans were present to see them hold out. \nThey join Cork and Mayo on two points in Group 1\, with the Westerners to meet winless Louth tomorrow. \nSeán O’Shea showed sparks of his 2022 form from the off. He was well up for this one\, fist-pumping his first from play in the seventh minute (one of three early points set up by Paul Geaney) before adding two more. Maurice Shanley was soon switched to pick him up. \nShanley’s run had created Cork’s opener for Chris Óg Jones\, with Brian O’Driscoll and Brian Hurley (free) keeping them in touch. \nKerry kicked three in a row thereafter to push them four up\, with Adrian Spillane\, Paudie Clifford\, and O’Shea keeping them in control. \nPowter was deployed as the Cork sweeper\, while Paul Murphy took up the free role at the other end. Powter did advance with a skillful give-and-go for a deflected point as both defences denied goal chances. \nDaniel O’Mahony was trusted with tagging David Clifford and they shared an engrossing duel. Clifford got off the mark in the fifth minute but O’Mahony dispossessed him twice shortly after. \nClifford retreated further outfield as the rate of scoring began to dwindle. He launched one missile between the posts from outside the 45 on the half-hour to end a nine-minute scoreless spell. He soon found himself playing crossfield passes within his own 45 as Cork seemed pleased to keep Kerry within sight against the wind. \nA Hurley free brought them within one score but Paudie Clifford made it 0-9 to 0-5 at half-time. \nJack O’Connor sent Ruairí Murphy on for Spillane at the break but it was Cork who got the jump on the restart. \nThey had four points inside seven minutes against one O’Shea free\, with scores from Hurley (a mark and a free)\, Powter with a turn of pace\, and Killian O’Hanlon\, who fired a potential goal chance over. \nThe heat was being turned up in the Páirc Uí Chaoimh sun\, with the crowd getting involved\, but one turnover would turn to disaster for the hosts. \nPowter coughed up possession after taking a wrong turn\, Jack Barry sent Geaney into space and he exchanged a one-two with Tom O’Sullivan. \nPowter\, desperate to make up for his mistake\, brought Geaney down outside the box but David Gough ruled it was cynical\, flashing a black card and awarding the penalty. \nDavid Clifford stepped up and sent the goalie the wrong way. \nKerry would stretch their lead to five with the man advantage thanks to two more Clifford points before Powter’s return. 1-12 to 0-10 with 13 minutes to go. \nCork kept fighting and their subs were making an impact\, with Eoghan McSweeney scoring with his first touch and a huge Steven Sherlock point helping to cut the gap to two. \nDavid Clifford burst through a packed defence to point but it didn’t quite settle Kerry. Wicklow had suffered disappointing defeats to the same opposition. \nOn this occasion Oisin McConville will like much of what he saw\, as despite a sluggish start\, they kicked into gear and held a four point half-time lead.  \nTheir scores arrived in a burst\, with 1-5 coming in 12 minutes where they dominated proceedings. This came after the opening 16 minutes where James Naughton (two frees) and Peter Nash had given Limerick a 0-3 to 0-1 advantage. \nBut Wicklow’s firepower\, which had helped them gain promotion from Division Four of the Allianz Football League\, came to the fore in the second quarter. Mark Jackson landed a superb touchline free from near 45 meters\, while John Paul Nolan clipped over two\, the second a mark. \nHe would turn have Treaty defence in knots on 26 minutes\, collecting a long delivery and rounding his man and the goalkeeper to fire home. \nLimerick closed the half with points from Hugh Bourke and a third free from the boot of James Naughton. \nJackson somehow denied Naughton moments into the second half\, getting a foot to the low shot and deflecting it onto the crossbar and away to safety. \nBy the 50th minute\, efforts from Conor Fee\, Dean Healy and Jackson had pushed Wicklow 1-9 to 0-6 clear\, with Cian Sheehan’s point all Limerick could muster in this 15 minute window. \nA 10 minute cameo hauled Limerick back to within a point. Cathal Downes and Brian Donovan both found the target before a 60th minute penalty made it 1-10 to 1-11. Mark Jackson fouled sub Robbie Bourke\, before captain Iain Corbett picked out the top corner. \nThere was a quick response from Wicklow\, with Jack Kirwan netting within two minutes. They conceded a pair of goals early and late but in between\, they were unstoppable. \nTheir defence led by Eoghan Gunning\, James Hegarty\, and Jamie Moylan limited a Galway attack that had outscored their opponents by 100 points across six games. \nAt the other end\, they took a Galway defence that had never allowed more than 0-14 in any match for 2-22\, with the goals arriving at the start of the second half from Ógie Fanning and Hegarty. By the end\, they had 12 scorers\, including four subs. \nThey celebrated their first title at this grade since the double of 1997 with Gunning raising the Irish Press Cup in Semple Stadium’s New Stand. \nGalway had two goals inside 13 minutes but their shooting was otherwise pock-marked by wides (six in that same period). \nAn Aaron Niland free from inside his own 45 proved more dangerous when dropping short. The towering Jason Rabbitte snatched it out of the air and flicked into the empty net. \nThen\, Conor Gilligan was first onto a breaking ball and sent Cullen Killeen into space. He shook off a foul and used the advantage to roof the sliotar past the covering defender and keeper. \nBut each time Clare came back to level and then lead. They had four of the next five points after Rabbitte’s goal\, with an early brace for Michael Collins. \nOnce Killeen netted\, they enjoyed the best spell\, scorching over five of the next seven points\, with two each from Seán Arthur and free-taker Marc O’Brien as well as a sensational Fanning effort. \nWhen Rabbitte raised a 27th-minute white flag\, it was Galway’s only point from play all half. \nA Niland bouncer tested Mark Sheedy’s reflexes\, but Clare finished the half ahead\, 0-12 to 2-5. Their defence started in the full-forward line and was summarised when they intercepted back-to-back short puck-outs\, although both were shot wide\, before forcing the goalie to overcarry for a tap-over free. \nClare lost full-back Ronan Keane to an apparent hamstring injury while Galway centre-back Donnacha Campbell was also removed at the break. \nGalway’s skillful short-passing game was being tested like never before and it came under greater stress when Clare added two goals within seven minutes. \nO’Brien’s run created the first. Monaghan had 10 players on the scoresheet as they hit 1-19 from open play. \nA high-octane start produced six points from six shots in as many minutes\, with Clare getting four of those through Darragh Bohannon\, Cathal O’Connor\, Keelan Sexton and Mark McInerney\, while Monaghan’s replies came via wing-backs Karl O’Connell and Conor McCarthy. \nClare continued their clinical finishing through Emmet McMahon\, Sexton and Daniel Walsh as they built up a three-point lead\, not registering their first wide until the 25th minute. Offaly worked incredibly hard to generate chances against a resolute Cork defence and an imperious half-back line\, but two or three in a row proved elusive\, particularly with Ben Cunningham beginning to find his groove. \nThe depth of the Cork panel came to the fore as Eoin O’Leary and Adam O’Sullivan put in big shifts of the bench\, and while Shane Rigney did fire in a late goal for the Faithful County\, it was far too late to put any real pressure on the rampant Rebels. \nIt was all so different from the first half\, when the hurling was physical\, intense\, and of the highest quality. Cork got a huge early boost when Diarmuid Healy pounced on a loose ball and clinically found the bottom corner with a perfectly placed daisy cutter of a shot\, but the real star of the show was Adam Screeney\, who was almost unstoppable in the left corner of the Offaly attack. A six-point Dublin deficit transformed into a three-point winning margin. A winning goal seven minutes into injury-time. An almost equalising Cork goal eight minutes into injury-time deflected just wide. \nWhen Cork full-forward Seán Coakley converted a 42nd minute penalty to stop dead in its tracks rising Dublin momentum and shove the beaten Munster finalists 2-12 to 0-12 clear\, Ray O’Mahony’s young charges were in pole position for a successful championship relaunch and an All-Ireland semi-final spot. \nCork\, though\, would not score again for the remainder of proceedings. Cork slowly retreated into themselves. Dublin slowly advanced forward and gradually began nibbling away at the six-point deficit in front of them. \nA converted ’45 from sub Andrew O’Reilly on 58 minutes had them back within two\, 2-12 to 0-16. When it was announced shortly after that there would be six minutes of injury-time\, a roar went up from the capital following. They had the whiff of blood in their nostrils. \nLenny Cahill left the minimum between them at the beginning of the six additional minutes. And while the corner-forward subsequently dropped short an equalising free\, parity was restored on 65 minutes. Sub Shane Mullarkey\, with the left boot\, showed commendable nerve. \nFast forward a minute and a half. A short Cork restart was given to full-back Frank Hurley. He offloaded to Niall O’Shea. The corner-back went to return possession to the goalkeeper\, but Dublin’s Paddy Curry stole in and shook the net. \nIt was the first time Dublin had led this All-Ireland quarter-final since the 11th minute. Perfect timing. \nThere was somehow time for Cork to try and fashion an equaliser. But not before an episode of pushing and shoving in the middle of the field resulted in a second yellow for Dublin half-back Ryan Mitchell and black for Dublin centre-forward Luke O’Boyle. They’d finish with 13. They’d finish on top. Mark O’Brien’s equalising goal attempt was deflected narrowly wide of the target. \nWhile Dublin made an amount of schoolboy errors throughout\, in the end\, it paled in comparison to Cork’s poor\, poor game-management of their six-point lead. Their decision-making on the ball in the final quarter spoke to the fact that they are but 16 and 17-year-old lads. \nIt had been oh so different in the opening period. \nA massively impressive and massively important 1-4 burst midway through the first half was at the root of Cork’s 1-10 to 0-8 interval lead. \nCork trailed by two\, 0-5 to 0-3\, when the young Rebels put their opponents into an eight-minute headlock. When they eventually let the Leinster champions up for air\, Dublin found themselves five adrift. A seven-point swing. \nThe goal was a Seán Coakley point attempt on 12 minutes that didn’t have the legs. Denis O’Mullane caught the dropping ball ahead of Dublin ‘keeper Cillian Murray and finished. O’Mullane finished the half with 1-2 from play. \nThe first of Cork’s four unanswered points in this 1-4 sequence\, supplied by Timothy Cullinane\, came from an avoidable Dublin turnover in the middle third where Noah Byrne failed to hold possession. And that really was the story of the first half; Dublin cheaply and almost inexplicably coughing up possession\, Cork clinical in punishing with a white flag. \nCork’s lead was greatest when swelling to seven – 1-10 to 0-6 – after a three-in-a-row from Dara Sheedy\, Seán Coakley\, and centre-back Gearóid Daly late in the half. \nDublin\, mind\, did claw back some ground just shy of the interval whistle. Paddy Curry’s point on 31 minutes was only their second since the 11th minute. Then again\, they didn’t need to be. In this All-Ireland quarter-final\, they did enough and no more. \nThe Munster champions only once trailed the beaten Leinster finalists. The last time the two teams stood level was on 34 minutes. \nPaul O’Dea and the excellent Joey Cunningham had kicked back-to-back points to bring the Lilywhites level at 0-8 to 1-5. They were the first two points Kildare had kicked from play\, their three first-half white flags coming from the placed-ball. \nThe Kerry response was to put down the boot for the first time in this fixture. Whether the green flag was intentional or not\, we’re not sure. \nBen Murphy and Tomás Kennedy chipped in with a pair. From level pegging to Kerry six in front. 1-11 to 1-5. Job done. Semi-final spot booked. \nMurphy and Evan Boyle were an impressive midfield partnership. It was Murphy\, after Kerry had lost Kennedy to a black card on 58 minutes and Kildare had closed to within four following a smattering of fine points from Joey Cunningham\, who charged through the centre for a 61st minute goal to make certain of the outcome. \nBy comparison with the high-octane opener at Nowlan Park\, the pace to the Kerry-Kildare first half wasn’t so much pedestrian as it was going backwards. It was a first half of little energy or lift. \nWhat saved it was the talent and trickery of Kerry corner-forward Paddy Lane. He had 0-4 to his name by half-time\, all bar one coming from open play. His first was kicked within a few seconds of the throw-in. An indicator of what was to come. \nHe and Kerry could have finished the half with greater tallies (0-7 to 1-3 they led at the break). Lane was off target for a white flag on one occasion. On another\, his green flag shot was deflected by Kildare goalkeeper Cathal Moore onto the post. \nWhen Harry Redmond goaled on 21 minutes to move Kildare in front for the first and only time in this quarter-final\, it was Lane who posted the Kerry reply less than a minute later to bring them immediately back on level terms. Fellow corner-forward Dara Hogan added his name to the scoresheet two minutes later to reposition them back out in front. \nIn essence\, that was the quarter-final in a nutshell. The result avenges their one-point defeat to the Banner in April\, at the same venue. Late points from Cathal O’Neill pushed Limerick clear and despite a Tony Kelly score\, the Banner couldn’t find the levelling score. \nLimerick become only the second county to achieve that remarkable five-in-a-row in the province\, matching the Cork side of 1975 -1979. John Kiely has now overseen five Munster successes\, three league titles and four All Ireland wins since taking charge in 2017 – all without losing any of the 12 finals they have contested. \nOver 43\,000 supporters attended a sold-out TUS Gaelic Grounds\, there was a jovial and excited crowd in situ long before referee Liam Gordon threw the ball in. These sides played a classic in Thurles 12 months ago\, with Limerick needing extra-time to defeat their neighbours on that occasion. \nIn a frantic clash\, it was Clare who looked the sharper early on – able to find space in the Limerick defence\, with Aidan McCarthy and Tony Kelly prominent. When the space wasn’t there\, there was efforts from Diarmuid Ryan and Cathal Malone from distance. \nTrailing to the opening pair of Limerick points\, four on the trot put Clare into the ascendancy. \nIt was an opening half where Aaron Gillane led the Limerick charge\, with seven points\, including two from play. But Limerick always held the late lead and sub O’Neill pushed them two clear in stoppage time. These arrived from Cathal Downes’ long-range effort\, a Barry Coleman score and a James Naughton mark. \nLaois did reply quickly and superbly\, they kicked the next four points with Mark Barry and Patrick O’Sullivan on the scoresheet. They would hold a slender lead for much of the half\, but weren’t able to shake a pacy Limerick\, who were group winners after winning their opening two clashes last month. \nLaois tagged on a few scores to move 0-9 to 0-6 ahead\, as Murphy’s mark and a score from James Finn helped them take advantage of some good kick passing. But Limerick finished the half strongly. Despite being denied by Killian Roche for a couple of goals\, there was scores from Hugh Bourke and a trio of James Naughton frees to push the Shannonsiders ahead by the minimum at the interval. \nWith it 0-10 to 0-9\, Mark Fitzgerald would have been content\, he would have been ecstatic when his side opened with the first four efforts of the half. These put them 0-14 to 0-9 ahead as Brian Donovan\, Bourke and McSweeney were all accurate. This\, by the 47th minute\, would be the last Limerick score. \nLaois came back\, as points from Barry (free) were quickly added to by Evan O’Carroll and another from Brian Daly. Suddenly\, there was energy in the Laois legs and they were to within a point inside the final five minutes. \nA stray pass from a Limerick defender was intercepted by Murphy\, who from a tight angle\, rounded Donal O’Sullivan before finding the net. \nIt appeared Limerick needed a goal\, particularly when they trailed by three after a superb Killian Roche ‘45’. Instead they worked the ball through the lines and ruthlessly hunted and pounced on defensive errors from the home side\, wasting no time in racking up the scores. \nFive points in the opening five minutes set the tone\, three of them from the stick of Jason Forde\, who was making his first appearance since their draw with Cork in Munster. However once Mark Kehoe snaffled a short puckout and danced in for the game’s first goal\, the metaphorical clouds were gathering for Offaly\, as well as the physical ones. \nTen minutes had passed by the time Eoghan Cahill whipped over Offaly’s first point\, and already Tipp were motoring with 1-7\, and talk of records was beginning to gather across the stadium. \nLiam Cahill’s men didn’t let up\, and their scoring rate of approximately a point a minute continued. Alan Tynan\, Jake Morris and Conor Stakelum shot 12 points from play between them in the first half\, five each for Morris and Stakelum\, while two goals in as many minutes from Jason Forde and Seamus Callanan\, both of which penalised Offaly errors\, helped push the lead out to 25 points with less than half an hour gone\, 3-24 to 0-8. \nA strong run from Cillian Kiely saw Dan McCormack pull across the Kilcormac-Killoughey player and led to Johnny Murphy issuing a black card to McCormack for careless use of the hurl denying a clear goalscoring chance\, and Eoghan Cahill’s penalty gave the beleaguered home supporters something to shout about. \nTo Offaly’s credit\, they were much more competitive for long stretches of the second half\, and goals from Cillian Kiely and Charlie Mitchell kept the margin at the around the 20-point mark for long periods. Tipperary were always in control of the game and some wonderful scores from Bryan O’Mara\, Morris and Forde proved that they were still a class apart\, but with ten minutes to play\, it looked like the game would finish with a similar winning margin to what lay between the teams at the interval. \nLate in the game the heavens opened however\, and Tipp rained further misery on their hosts in the process too. Catch the highlights with #GAANOW. pic.twitter.com/noyFpTeEfQ \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) June 21\, 2023 \n  \n\nDerry see off Clare to power into quarter-final \nAll-Ireland SFC Group 4: Derry 1-19 Clare 1-13  \nReport by Michael McMullan for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nUlster champions Derry advanced straight to the All-Ireland quarter-finals after topping their group with victory Clare on Saturday evening in Longford. \nIt was the last game in charge for Banner boss Colm Collins who stepped down\, telling his players afterwards in an emotional and tearful send-off. \nVictory now gives Ciaran Meenagh’s side a week off before entering the last eight of the race for Sam Maguire. \nThe sides were level four times in the first half and they were wedged tight at half-time\, 0-9 to 1-6\, with Emmett McMahon’s 22nd-minute goal the key score after Derry’s control early on. \nShane McGuigan nosed Derry ahead before goalkeeper Odhrán Lynch landed one for two first-half points to settle them into the game. \nMcMahon opened Clare’s account in the ninth minute but Derry continued their dominance. They closed down Ryan’s long kick-outs over the top and were tigerish in the tackle as the Banner carried the hall into contact. \nEthan Doherty and McGuigan added scores as Derry threatened to break clear. The Oakleafers led 0-5 to 0-3 when goalkeeper Stephen Ryan threw a leg at Niall Loughlin’s shot after being played through by Ethan Doherty. \nDerry had another opening but a failed attack led to a turnover and when Clare counter-attacked McMahon dummied Lynch before slotting beyond the despairing dive of Conor Doherty on the line and into the corner of the net. \nLynch and McGuigan hit points but Clare were always able to stay in the game with McMahon (2) and Daniel Walsh. \nDerry hit six first-half wides and lacked the composure their early dominance would’ve justified. \nIt was a more clinical and revved up Derry after the break. A foul on Ciaran McFaul saw Loughlin dissected the posts before Paul Cassidy and McGuigan set Derry into their groove. \nDerry maintained their high press around midfield and rode their luck at times with Clare not having the potent pass to hurt the Oaks over the top. \nPaul Cassidy\, McGuigan and Niall Loughlin extended Derry’s lead with Clare still probing on the break. \nJamie Malone kicked two fine efforts with substitutes Mark McInerney and Micheál Garry keeping the scoreboard ticking over. Cork and Mayo’s plus-three score difference was identical but the Rebels got the nod on points scored (2-48 to 2-44). \nSteven Sherlock changed the game when introduced in the 40th minute for the injured Ruairí Deane. He kicked 1-5 from six shots in the final half-hour as Cork charged back from a 1-11 to 0-8 deficit. \nSherlock accounted for the first 1-4 of that comeback\, the goal from a penalty\, to edge Cork ahead before fellow impact subs John O’Rourke and Chris Óg Jones gave them the necessary three-point margin by the 74th minute. \nMayo had a last-gasp scoreable free. Had they pointed\, they would’ve earned the home tie as Group 1 runners-up. Had they worked a goal\, they’d take the bye to the quarter-final off of Kerry as Group One winners. \nAidan O’Shea lobbed it in\, but Míchéal Aodh Martin claimed the high ball as Cork celebrated a first victory over Mayo in 21 years. \nThere were two late changes on either side. \nCork decided to draft Tommy Walsh and Eoghan McSweeney in for Kevin O’Donovan and Jones. Instead of Jones\, it was Deane who partnered Brian Hurley up top at the first whistle\, while Colm O’Callaghan drifted in as another high-ball option at every opportunity. \nMayo introduced Donnacha McHugh and Diarmuid O’Connor for Sam Callinan and Fionn McDonagh. As a unit\, however\, they were lost for ideas to penetrate the Rebels’ blanket defence. \nO’Shea did force a save from Martin\, but it took them 22 minutes for their first score from play\, via the excellent Jordan Flynn. \nCork were never more than two points ahead but it was the underdogs’ ravenous appetite for turnovers and speed of counter-attack which impressed most. Rory Maguire\, wearing no.3\, displayed his kicking abilities by getting forward to finish off two fine moves\, while his tackle to strip a Mayo attacker resulted in another for McSweeney. \nDeane drifted around to assist two more points for O’Callaghan and Walsh as well as a goal chance for Ian Maguire\, well turned away by Colm Reape. \nCork ahead 0-6 to 0-5 at the break. \nBut Cork couldn’t sustain such a breakneck pace for a full 70 minutes as Mayo were able to congest their attacks and get their runners into space in the third quarter. \nFlynn was happy to take on the shooting responsibility. He found plenty of success drifting from the right wing across to the left to kick three further points\, while winning a mark which resulted in a Ryan O’Donoghue converted free. \nO’Donoghue was plenty involved in open play too\, setting up a point and the breakthrough goal for half-time substitute Tommy Conroy after Killian O’Hanlon spilled the ball in the 57th minute. 1-11 to 0-8 now. \nCork hit right back from the kick-out. O’Callaghan drove at the heart of the Mayo defence and was fouled for a penalty. Sherlock sent Reape the wrong way. \nThat goal and those subs re-energised the Rebel challenge as Mayo completely wilted. \nSherlock had 1-5 within 25 minutes of his arrival\, with his latter point giving Cork their first lead in half an hour. When O’Rourke added another\, they led by two entering stoppage time. \nThe signal was given in to the players. Just one more point would be enough. \nSherlock was the man to win the final Cork kick-out as they worked it through the hands of Conor Corbett and Ian Maguire to send Jones in on goal. Kerry maintained the intensity of the first with the opening 1-5 upon resumption. After being awarded a free when Roscommon fouled the ball\, the home side were able to work an opening and Seán Powter fed Ian Maguire\, who in turn found sub O’Donovan and he fisted the ball over the bar. \nThere was time for Roscommon to find another levelling score and send the game to extra time\, but a late red card for Enda Smith for an off-the-ball incident ate up some of that and Cork were able to see out the victory. \nFollowing on from the Mayo win\, it marks the first time since 2009 that the Rebels have beaten two Division 1 counties in the same championship and they will be full of belief going into Monday morning’s quarter-final draw. \nThey had to show different sides to their game\, but a lack of panic was a central theme – at 0-7 to 0-3 down\, Cork kept plugging away and were rewarded by going in just a point down at half-time; then\, after seeing the five-point lead evaporate\, they kept their heads to find a winner. \nThat they had assembled such an advantage was down to a big improvement on the resumption. While Rory Maguire had them level at 0-7 each soon after the restart\, they had to be thankful to goalkeeper Micheál Aodh Martin for a brilliant save to deny Diarmuid Murtagh in the wake of that. \nThough Roscommon goalkeeper Conor Carroll came forward to stroke over the resultant 45\, Cork were generating some momentum and had five of the next seven points between the 40th and 51st minutes. With Brian O’Driscoll prominent and Matty Taylor shining among a defence that never ceased working\, they seized the upper hand and Steven Sherlock’s fifth point gave them their biggest lead they had held up until then\, 0-12 to 0-10. \nAfter Roscommon’s Daire Cregg replied with a point from a mark\, Sherlock looked to have made it a two-point game again but the shot was waved wide\, to the dismay of many in the crowd of 14\,294. \nHowever\, those misgivings were soon forgotten as sub Conor Corbett exchanged passes with Powter and sent a low shot past Carroll\, the ball rolling in off the post. When impressive sub Chris Óg Jones added a point\, they were 1-13 to 0-11 to the good. \nRoscommon didn’t yield and two Diarmuid Murtagh points had the deficit down to a goal. That might have been doubled as Jones had a chance of a green flag – he shot wide but Cork felt he was being fouled. After that let-off\, Cregg\, Diarmuid Murtagh and Ciaráin Murtagh all reeled off points and Roscommon were level. Four first half goals helped the Banner ease to victory\, with Mark Rodgers and hat-trick hero\, Tony Kelly\, shooting big totals for the winners. \nThis was a return to the field of play for Clare\, following their agonisingly frustrating one-point loss in the Munster final\, two weeks ago. Dublin were aiming to kick on after a preliminary quarter-final victory over Carlow\, though they never hit the level required against a battle hardened Clare. \nBrian Lohan’s Clare needed little time to find a first goal\, Kelly racing through the middle to find the net inside three minutes. They were quickly 1-2 to 0-0 ahead\, when Rodgers landed a free. \nDublin lost marksman Donal Burke to an early hamstring issue\, which saw Cian O’Sullivan assume placed ball duties. The St. Brigid’s forward got the boys in blue off the mark with a ‘65’ after eight minutes.   \nFrom here\, Dublin grew into the contest\, hitting five of six points\, including Fergal Whitely’s sideline effort\, their first score from play. This had them to within one\, 0-5 to 1-3. Shane O’Donnell tidied up a loose ball\, to point\, after Seán Brennan had saved from Ian Galvin. \nMicheál Donoghue’s charged led for the first time\, when Darragh Power goaled\, rifling to the corner from a tight angle\, but Dublin couldn’t build on this. Clare’s second green flag arrived from Mark Rodgers\, off a David Fitzgerald pass. \nClare led 4-8 to 1-8 by half-time\, with a late spurt pushing them clear of the Leinster opponents. A run of 2-3 without reply in just three minutes helped ease any stress caused by nine first half wides. Kelly needed their third\, again\, Fitzgerald involved\, before Shane O’Donnell pounced for a quickfire 1-1. \nAny hope of a Dublin revival was quickly extinguished after half-time with a fifth Clare major – as Kelly completed his hat-trick. The Ballyea man would finish with 3-4\, while Mark Rodgers contributed 1-11. \nDublin had their leading scoring contribution from Cian O’Sullivan\, while their second half-goal came from sub Alex Considine. Although John McGrath’s goal put them within a point\, they never truly looked like saving their Championship prospects in front of 34\,180 fans at the Gaelic Grounds. \nTipperary were blessed to go in just three points down at half-time. Galway’s execution was flawed\, too. \nTipp chose Dan McCormack to tackle Whelan\, with Cathal Barrett out on Brian Concannon\, but they reversed those roles as Whelan slipped both markers for back-to-back goal chances. \nMeanwhile\, Galway deployed Seán Linnane to track Noel McGrath all around the Ennis Road. Although the Tipp captain got off three early shots\, they never adjusted to the wind with each drifting wide. \nThe sides evenly shared the first 12 scores before Galway began to sense Tipp were there for the taking. \nSéamus Callanan picked up on a giveaway puck-out but his run for goal ended with a Gearóid McInerney block. From there\, all the rest of the goal chances were Galway’s. \nWhelan slipped inside twice\, once forcing a fine save from Shelly but having to settle for a pointed Evan Niland free from the next. \nGalway went on a four-point streak\, with two each from Niland and Whelan\, although Shelly again saved Tipp when deflecting the latter Whelan effort over with his trailing leg. \nBarrett then made a crucial sliding tackle to sweep the sliotar away from Whelan with the goal gaping. \nA Jason Forde free (his fifth point) left Tipp just three back\, 0-10 to 0-7. \nBut Cahill’s half-time team talk was thrown to the wind when Tipp conceded a goal straight from the throw-in. Just 20 seconds had passed by the time Whelan had taken advantage of Barrett’s slip and on this occasion\, he made no mistake to dispatch his seventh goal of this campaign. \nMichael Breen took his turn as Tipp’s third defender seconded onto Whelan. \nGearóid O’Connor and Conor Bowe were drafted in for last week’s hat-trick hero Mark Kehoe and Callanan as Tipp tried to reel in Galway. \nO’Connor and Alan Tynan split the posts before the latter skittled a shot across the Galway goal from a tight angle. \nBut when Cianan Fahy (0-2)\, Daithí Burke\, and Whelan reeled off the next four points\, the gap was eight. \nTipp responded with four of their own\, from Forde (0-2)\, Ronan Maher\, and Johnny Ryan as they began to dig in. \nSomehow\, on 62 minutes\, Tipp were back within one.
