Jason Forde struck 1-11 (1-4 from play) in defeat. \nA change of venue to Mallow\, with Fraher Field waterlogged\, spared Cahill a return to action on Waterford soil but Cathal Barrett’s red card\, after two yellows\, the second in the 58th minute\, gave the Déise the impetus to outscore Tipp by 0-7 to 0-4 from there to the end. \nWhat did Fitzgerald take from it? “Not much. It’s the third of January\, I’m not an idiot\,” he chuckles. \n“This is a million miles away from what’s going to happen in Semple Stadium in May playing Tipperary. I wouldn’t read a whole lot into it.”  \nFitzgerald was happy\, though\, to see so many putting their hands up in the absence of a dozen players from last year’s Championship team. When asked what he’s looking for at this time of the season\, Fitzgerald replied with one word: “Character.” He found it in Paudie Fitzgerald\, who scored two points in a five-minute match-winning cameo at the end. \n“There was a lad at the end\, he wasn’t feeling well the last few days\, and I needed him to go on because we had an injury. When he went on\, he did well and he was after playing a full game yesterday\, an Under-20 final. \n“He’s a young lad and Paudie in the next few years will be deadly but fair play to him tonight. He did well.”  \nBoth managers were keen to reinforce messages to their young sides. Fitzgerald brought his trademark 100% effort on the sideline\, protesting referee decisions and bemoaning misplaced passes. Liam Cahill\, never slow to make an early sub\, did the same in his own way\, hooking Joe Fogarty after 27 minutes of his county debut. \nDavy sought to sow confusion from the start\, positioning five of his forwards inside the 21 for the first three minutes before they fanned out. No sweeper\, certainly\, as the half-forwards dropped deep to run at Tipp. They were effective in creating space. Colin Dunford\, the only forward out the field at the start\, got the first score. Waterford nailed their first five shots\, while Tipp missed their first five. \nWaterford would land eight of the first nine points\, four from Reuben Halloran frees. Forde\, having missed four frees wide or short into a biting wind\, left aside his earlier misses to lead the Tipperary revival\, nailing four on the trot\, two from play. \nTipp eked out the goal chances\, too. Paddy Creedon had an effort saved by Billy Nolan and Conor Bowe was smothered after fielding a high ball on the edge of the square. At the other end\, Michael Breen\, seconded from midfield to full-back\, warmed to his task after an early DJ Foran point and assist. \nWaterford\, from fewer chances (13 to Tipp’s 18)\, led 10-6 at the break. \nThere was still four in it when Stephen Bennett\, just on and just booked for some handbags with Barrett\, raced in on goal. Pauric Campion fouled for a penalty. Bennett had his second chance but didn’t catch it crisply and Rhys Shelly\, on his debut between the sticks\, made the save. \nHalloran pointed the subsequent 65 but Forde came alive to blast 1-2 in four minutes. He caught a Johnny Ryan delivery and fended off the full-back to bury low to the net before converting two placed balls\, the first after Jack Ryan forced Nolan into a save. \nTipp were reduced to 14 men when Barrett received a second yellow for hauling down James Power. Forde and Cian O’Dwyer twice more struck equalisers\, Forde’s a fine rob and score from under the stand. \nBut Waterford struck for home with four points in a row heading into stoppage time; two from Paudie Fitzgerald\, one with his first touch\, and one each from Mark Fitzgerald and Austin Gleeson. \nAs for Davy\, did he enjoy his sideline return? \n“It’s great to be back! You miss it. The year out was great and it was great to be a pundit and all that but I kinda like being out there. It’s nice when you win but I just enjoy being on the training field and being with the lads. Waterford\, without manager Ephie Fitzgerald through illness\, replied. They levelled through fine efforts from Donal Fitzgerald\, Brian Lynch and Dermot Ryan. \nBut Limerick pulled clear\, 2-5 to 0-7 at the break\, Downes netting on 18 minutes. Brian Fanning found two points while Paul Maher clipped the bar when looking for a goal. \nThe raft of Déise changes didn’t aid their challenge and Limerick were six clear early in the second half. Any lingering doubt over the result evaporated when Downes found the net and within seconds\, Killian Ryan turned over a kickout and finished neatly for another green flag. \nThe Treaty cantered to the win\, with Dempsey able to introduce youth and experience late in the contest. For Waterford\, they kicked two late scores\, but were largely off the pace. The 22-point hammering\, though\, came with a sizable caveat as it was an U20 team put out by Kerry on account of the seniors holidaying abroad. \nThere was no sizable caveat beside this evening’s 2022 McGrath Cup opener. There was no senior team holiday to explain away Cork’s 12-point winning margin. \nYes\, there was an element of callowness to the Kerry team put out by Jack O’Connor\, but it was a lineup that still contained only three debutants. It was a lineup that also contained five players who featured in last year’s All-Ireland final win.  \nThe experienced hands\, however\, were unable to steer those lesser educated at this level. \nCork’s hand was less experimental. Their starting team contained two-thirds of the 15 that began last year’s All-Ireland quarter-final defeat. Add onto that the returning Daniel O’Mahony and Brian O’Driscoll\, as well as debutant Conor Corbett. \nThe latter was pulling on the red shirt for the first time since rupturing his cruciate ligament in the 2021 Munster U20 final. And although the senior newcomer was not among the scorers\, he had a direct hand in two of Cork’s five goals. \nThe second of those was a delicate lob to Brian O’Driscoll for Cork’s opening goal of the second period and fourth overall. Midfielder Colm O’Callaghan supplied their fifth to bring his personal tally for the evening to 2-4. \nThe second half was a dead affair\, the result long decided. Kerry made seven subs at half time. No difference did it make. They managed just two converted frees in the first 25 minutes of the second period. \nBack to the first half. That’s where the story of the game lies. \nIt was a first half of Cork running and Kerry rustiness. It was a first half of Cork goal raids and malfunctioning Kerry restarts. It was a first half where the hosts had almost as many green flag opportunities as Kerry kicked white ones. It was a first half that ended with Cork 3-7 to 0-6 in front. And if we’re to be blunt about it\, the visitors were fortunate not to be another three or six behind onto that. \nBrian Hurley was the rebound supplier of Cork’s opening goal on six minutes. It came from a superb change of foot and pace from experimental centre-forward Seán Powter. You’d venture a guess that it will become less and less of an experiment and more and more of a permanent move as 2023 grows hair. \nTwo more goal chances went a begging before Corbett turned over a short Kerry restart on 20 minutes. The senior debutant promptly offloaded to Hurley\, who just as promptly offloaded to Chris Óg Jones. \nGoal number three was started by midfielder Ian Maguire and finished by his midfield partner O’Callaghan. The latter\, who enjoyed a near perfect finish to half\, trotted back to the dressing-room with 1-3 beside his name. \nBrian O’Driscoll was another busy middle-third Cork operator. He kicked two from play and was also strong in the assists department\, as was his half-forward colleague Powter. \nScores were much sparser at the other end. Half of Kerry’s interval total arrived from the deadball. If Cork were surprisingly bold – and bullish – for the first Wednesday of the New Year\, then Kerry were surprisingly blunt. The Kingdom has this illogical fascination with trying to find Killian Spillane each time they pressed\, and while the corner-forward won an early free and split the posts\, Cork soon copped on to Kerry’s one-dimensional approach. \nCase in point was Brian O’Driscoll’s 23rd minute white flag\, a score that stemmed from five red shirts encircling and relieving Spillane of possession. \nSpillane’s inside colleague Darragh Roche flung over two first half beauties. They were probably the sole highlight of a haphazard start to their 2023 season. \nIn Jack O’Connor’s nine seasons at the helm\, he’s rarely tasted such a sizeable defeat. Behind by 12 at the break\, not even two second half Podge Boyle goals could make the tiniest inroad on that deficit. \nThe ease at which Boyle twice found the net was among the few red marks on the Cork copybook as they pulled out of Tralee and made for home. His first was a long-range free that sailed all the way to the net\, while the full-forward found himself inside the cover and in acres of space for his second on 49 minutes. \nAs Cork selector Fergal Condon remarked afterwards\, you simply have to defend better in both instances. \nEven in this routine victory\, the two green flags offered a January reminder\, especially to the panel’s younger members\, that there can be no momentary switching off at this level. \nCompeting to overshadow Cork’s season-opening win were the injuries sustained by Shane Kingston and debutant Ben Cunningham. As alluded to elsewhere on this page\, Kingston pulled up early in the second period\, while debutant Cunningham wasn’t two minutes introduced when he walked back out to the sideline. The hope is that neither injury will prove in any way serious. \nCork’s opening win of 2023 had been secured by the time referee Alan Tierney sounded his interval whistle. At 1-16 to 0-7 in front\, the visitors were not for catching. And even though Kerry would enjoy the backing of a strongish breeze upon the change of ends\, they’d have needed a gale of red alert proportions to bridge the 12-point half-time gap. \nIt was actually the home side who were first off the mark in that opening half\, Shane Conway splitting the posts 11 seconds in. They’d not score again from play\, though\, for another 18 minutes. By that midway mark of the half\, the Kingdom were five in arrears\, and counting. Only Fionan MacKessy for the hosts was making a nuisance of himself. \nThe Cork goal arrived four minutes later. Debutant Ethan Twomey supplied the ball in from midfield and fouled was Declan Dalton. The latter promptly dusted himself down and dispatched the resulting penalty. \nAlan Cadogan and another debutant Cormac Beausang both threw over three from play in the opening half\, with Conor Lehane clipping one less. \nTop-scoring was Kingston\, the corner-forward firing over five frees and one from play. He looked to be in for a certain goal in the play following his fourth converted free on 16 minutes. But producing a fine save was goalkeeper John B O’Halloran. \nO’Halloran was beaten for a second time five minutes into the second half by substitute Shane Barrett. Combining in a one-two move with David Clifford\, his low finish was the third time Castletown goalkeeper Jonathan Ginnitty was beaten. \nBetween them\, the Clifford brothers David and Paudie scored nine points\, the former posting six from play\, although he spurned a couple of goal opportunities. Paudie was in dazzling form\, blocking shots at one end and delivering oodles of ball to his inside forwards. \nFossa had a hefty breeze at their backs in the first half but would have been expected to be ahead going into the break notwithstanding the conditions. \nThey went about their business diligently in the opening eight minutes\, going four points to no score ahead. David Clifford picked off a couple from play and Paudie Clifford’s DNA was on all but one of his team’s scores. \nCastletown settled with two Kevin Ross points\, one from play\, but Fossa’s four-point advantage was restored by the 17th minute as David Clifford obliged with one from play and the other for a free following a foul on his older brother. \nThe margin was three in the 20th minute when Fossa found the net for the first time. Paudie Clifford did so well to find Emmett O’Shea and he hoisted a hand-pass to the edge of the square where Cian O’Shea gladly palmed the ball home. \nTwice in a matter of seconds Fossa spurned goal chances\, the latter of them from Emmett O’Shea\, but the corner forward made no mistake when an opening presented itself in the 27th minute as Paudie Clifford squared a hand-pass for him to touch to the net. \nCastletown were keeping Fossa honest\, though\, and saw out the half with a couple of scores to trail by 0-6 to 2-7. \nScorers for Fossa: D. A Leinster club has never won the title and they have lost 16 out of 19 semi-finals. \nIt was a first half of three acts. The first\, St Mogue’s on top but wayward. They kicked five early wides which seemed desperately necessary in light of what was to follow. \nOnce Rathmore’s press began to pen Mogue’s in from kick outs\, they struck for 2-5 without reply. Shane Ryan had the first goal in the 12th minute\, showing his goalkeeping instincts by rising high over Mogue’s keeper William Doyle to bundle the ball home. \nIt was the Ryan brothers dominating\, between Mark (who kicked 0-2) and Cathal in midfield and Shane\, with John Moynihan adding a goal after Cathal caught a mark from another Mogue’s kick-out. Moynihan could have instead claimed an attacking mark and easy point but his instinct to zig-zag toward goal proved correct. \nBut then Mogue’s began to make headway. Joe Sutton and Richard Waters provided the drive forward. County hurler Mikie Dwyer\, left thigh heavily strapped\, logged their first point after 23 minutes. Morgen Ellis had a shot on goal blocked down by Dan Murphy. Then\, in the 28th minute\, Waters charged behind the cover to rattle the net. Cian Byrne dropped a free onto the crossbar\, tapped over by John Tubritt. \nThe gap\, once 11\, back to four at the half; 2-5 to 1-4. \nMogue’s kept with Rathmore a while longer but never closed within that four-point deficit. Kenny followed it up with a point\, Aidan Jones added his second of the game and Crokes thought they were out of reach O’Rahilly’s mustered just one point in the third quarter\, a Jack Savage free\, and 19 minutes passed before Tommy Walsh sent over the side’s eighth score of the semi-final. The Munster champions rallied to thrice reduce the difference to five points. In additional time\, they cut the gap to three but a nervy Crokes couldn’t be reeled in. \nMoran’s prominence on kick-outs was key to O’Rahillys staying in touch in the first half. At both the outset and end of the period\, he was either winning the restarts\, being fouled on them or causing enough of a distraction to Crokes to allow a team-mate to collect the ball. \nCrokes were scoring more freely\, though\, and all but Shane Walsh in the forward line had scored from play by the 20th minute. They had also come the closest to scoring the first goal of the game through Shane Horan in the seventh minute and Hugh Kenny in the 22nd minute when he was set up by Shane Walsh. However\, Shane Foley was equal to his shot. \nWalsh opened his account with a free in the final minute of first half regulation time but O’Rahillys struck the last two points of the half\, corner-forwards Conor Hayes and Barry John Keane splitting the posts\, before they earned bookings on the stroke of the interval. \nScorers for Kilmacud Crokes: H. O’Connor\, meanwhile\, was a model of ball-winning industry and accurate free-taking at centre-forward for Tipp. \nTipperary had five early wides and a Ryan shot on goal well saved by Éamonn Foudy but they tidied up their shooting\, with no wide in the 20 minutes to half-time\, while Ryan made no mistake when in on goal again\, with Alan Tynan supplying the decisive pass. Tipp ahead now\, 1-6 to 0-8. \nClare didn’t show the same eye for goal but they did get their chance three minutes later when Davy Conroy was hauled down by Bryan O’Mara for a penalty. The Tipp centre-back was sent to the sin bin for the rest of the half but Barry Hogan saved him further admonishment with a stunning flying save to push Duggan’s penalty over the bar; a second Tipp penalty save in two games after Rhys Shelly’s midweek heroics. \nThat brought it level and they traded scores from there to half-time\, with Séamus Kennedy\, effective at wing-forward\, dropping back to hold the fort in the absence of O’Mara. 1-10 to 0-13 at the break and all six forwards on the board at either end. \nRyan\, Tipp’s biggest goal threat\, teed up Mark Kehoe on the restart but the full-forward whipped it high and wide before O’Connor forced Foudy into another fine save. \nRyan was a revelation\, winning the ball for an off-the-hurl point\, fouled for another pointed free\, and pulling off an exquisite overhand handpass so unexpected it seemed to catch O’Connor by surprise. \nJake Morris was then twice fouled for penalties in the space of five minutes. Jason Forde\, just on\, saw the first pushed over by Foudy but his lower second effort evaded the keeper. Our door is open. We’re constantly working towards trying to get some of our better players back.  \n“Colin O’Riordan is going back to Australia. Ballygiblin’s Darragh Flynn fired home after just nine seconds on the clock to send the Cork men on their way to an emphatic nine point win against Easkey to become AIB All-Ireland junior club champions. \nHaving lost the final last season\, Cork hurling star Mark Keane charged right from the throw-in and drove right through the heart of the Sligo side’s defence to lay off to Flynn to fire to the net. \nFlynn with ten on his back moved from the wing to the forty was an inspired decision. The switch\, the start\, the finish. It all accumulated in the victory for the Cork men\, the sixth side from their county to do so at this level. \nNamed on the GAA Champion 15 last year Sligo’s Andrew Kilcullen showed exactly why for his club. Easkey responded through the full forward and stayed in touch through his marksmanship. \nHowever\, the goal would prove to be the difference and would remain the closest margin between the two sides. In their best spell with three successive scores Kilcullen (brace) and Joe McHugh pulled it back to 1-4 to 0-4. \nJoe O’Sullivan was in excellent form for Ballygiblin though and finished with 10 points to his name. His free taking and leadership saw his side pull ahead just at half time and especially upon the resumption. \nCork football panelist Cathail O’Mahony made it 1-8 to 0-6 at the turn\, the first of his three points but there was more to come and an air of inevitability surrounding Croke Park such was the Cork side’s control and experience. \nKilcullen and impressive Dónall Hanley pulled scores back but Easkey needed goals and with Ballygiblin only conceding one goal throughout their All-Ireland winning run\, that kickstart never looked likely. \nO’Sullivan took control with three points in a row midway through the half and O’Mahony enjoyed himself after missing last season with injury. DESCRIPTION:Monaleen (Limerick) defeated Tuairín (Mayo) by 1-17 to 1-15 in the 2022 AIB GAA Hurling All-Ireland Intermediate Club Championship Final on Saturday January 14th at Croke Park. \n\n\nREPORT: @monaleengaa finished with a real flourish to defeat @TooreenHurlers in the @AIB_GAA All-Ireland Club IHC Final #GAA \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) January 14\, 2023 \n  \nAIB All-Ireland Club IHC Final: Monaleen finish with a flourish \nAIB All-Ireland Club IHC Final \nMonaleen 1-17 Tooreen 1-15 \nReport By Colm Gannon at Croke Park for GAA.ie \nMonaleen are heading home as All Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Champions after a thrilling contest in Croke Park against Tooreen. \nThe Limerick men didn’t lead in the game until the 53rd minute of the contest\, but when it counted at the end they finished strongly with Mark O’Dwyer and Donnacha Ó’Dálaigh leading them home. \nThe Mayo champions exploded out of the blocks early on and were 0-4 to 0-0 up inside 10 minutes through points from Shane Boland\, Cathal Freeman\, Liam Lavin and Seán Regan with Monaleen seeing four efforts go wide of the target\, before Ed Doyle got their scoring going 11 minutes in. \nTooreen responded through a Shane Boland free and a second huge score from distance from Regan to push themselves five clear\, before Luke Murphy got the Limerick sides second point of the day. \nAndrew La Touche Cosgrave rose high to win the ball and crack it over the bar to leave just three between the teams and a minute later it was all square when Dan Power was left free inside the Tooreen penalty area and he made no mistake firing it low past Bobby Douglas to leave it all square at 0-6 to 1-3 with 20 minutes gone. \nEoin Delaney responded almost instantly with a fine score from play to put the Mayo side back into the lead as the game really began to heat up in the biting cold of Croke Park. \nDavid Kenny stretched Tooreen’s lead to two with a well hit score from under the Cusack Stand side of the field\, but the lead was cut back to one seconds later when Mark O’Dwyer pointed a long range free and it was wiped out not long after when the same man pointed after a smart sideline move. \nTooreen weren’t going away and the next score was the second goal of the day\, Bobby Douglas lanced a free down the field the ball was worked to Eoin Delaney and onto Liam Lavin who drove the ball to the back of the net to put his side three clear. Shane Boland added one from play in the seconds after and Ray Larkin’s men were four clear with time almost up in the half. \nMark O’Dwyer cut the gap back to three with a free just as injury time slipped into play and La Touche Cosgrave cut it back to just two with the final play at the end of an exhilarating half of hurling. \nTooreen drew first blood in the second half with Delaney getting a point seconds after the restart and then Shane Boland tagging on a free to have his side four clear early doors. Donnacha Ó’Dálaigh cut it back to three points and then on 40 minutes O’Dwyer added a point from a free to leave two in it. \nFergal Boland got his first point of the night to push his side three to the good again after a slaloming run through the middle of the field. \nÓ’Dálaigh kept his side right in touch with a fine score\, sweeping the ball over the bar under pressure from the Cusack Stand side of the field. O’Dwyer showed his class in 45 minutes\, ghosting across the 21m line to collect the ball and slot it over on the turn to leave just one it it. \nThe same man had a great chance to get his side’s second goal of the day when Luke Murphy spotted him behind the cover but his effort flew across the face of the goal from close range. \nCathal Freeman put two between the teams again with a long range score – but Monaleen weren’t going to go away that easily. \nO’Dwyer hit two on the spin\, the first from a fee and the second a huge effort from distance to level it up at 1-13 each and then Ó’Dálaigh put the Limerick men in front for the first time in the evening with seven minutes left on the clock. \nFreeman levelled it up once more two minutes later\, but it was the Munster men who were finishing strongest. They roared back out to hit 1-17 after the break\, Aidan McCarthy leading the way with ten points. \nWaterford lined out with seven changes from the team that beat Tipperary earlier this month. By and large\, though\, this was January fare. Expectations among the large gathering had to be tempered. \nThe play was loose\, messy in parts. And yet\, it has been a January full of green shoots for the Cork footballers. \nA first final win since 2018. A long\, overdue end brought to the county’s run of seven final defeats. A run of three consecutive victories for the first time since the summer of 2021. A whole host of faces integrated back into the fold after absences stemming from 12 months to four and a half years. \nYou have half-forward Brian O’Driscoll back in red and motoring well. Daniel O’Mahony is back in the number three shirt. It’s a defence that has also welcomed back Tom Clancy. The latter started his first game on Friday evening since the Division 3 League win over Down in February of 2020\, while the returning Killian O’Hanlon made his first competitive start since that year’s Munster final defeat. \nThe early results of the Sean Powter centre-forward experiment continue to read encouragingly. Behind him at midfield\, there’s a confidence to Colm O’Callaghan’s play and point-taking that manager John Cleary must be rubbing his hands at. In front of Powter\, Brian Hurley’s voracious appetite for work and white flags is a microcosm for the attack as a whole. \nHurley’s remarks in his acceptance speech that Cork have “a lot of work done” is plainly evident for anyone who took in their three McGrath Cup matches. \nThis time last year\, an injury-hit Cork were thumped by Kerry to the tune of 12 points in the McGrath Cup final. Twelve months on\, the injury list is gathering dust. Such are the healthy options at their disposal\, management are in a position that they can rest some of the bigger names who were on Sigerson duty midweek. Not that centre-back Rory Maguire was showing any ill-effects from lining out in his second game in the space of 24 hours. \nFor all the green shoots\, and they are plenty\, the real stuff starts now. Cork have a daunting opening schedule to their Division 2 League campaign. Meath on Sunday week\, then Kildare\, then Dublin. \nIf points aren’t accumulated\, the shine will quickly fade from what has been\, up to now\, a heartening start to their 2023 season. \nBack to Friday evening. It was a poor McGrath Cup final. There wasn’t a whole lot of structure or shape to it. Limerick were poor full stop. Cork were more mixed. Some of their play was fluid and incisive\, other bits were lapse and unnecessarily messy. \nThe winners were probably a touch disappointed to have a lead of only one point at the break. Rewind to the 21st minute when Brian Hurley kicked the point of the half when throwing over a mark with almost nonchalant ease despite the distance and angle facing him. Hurley’s second and Cork’s sixth had them five in front. It was a lead reflective of the game. \nOne inviting ball across the Cork danger area and foul on Jack Ryan later handed Limerick a ticket back into proceedings. Iain Corbett confidently dispatched the spotkick. And when the centre-back kicked from distance their first point from play on 26 minutes\, the gap closed to one. \nIn front by 0-7 to 1-3 at the break\, Cork squeezed on the accelerator. In the first 12 minutes after the restart\, they outgunned Ray Dempsey’s Limerick 0-7 to 0-1. Game over. Three of those were Hurley points\, four were Sherlock frees. Three of the bunch came from Limerick being turned over well inside the Cork half. \nDavy Lyons\, at the third time of asking\, banged in a Limerick goal on 54 minutes. It cut the gap to three. No closer they came. This was Cork’s night. This has been a good January for them. They were level seven times on that October day in Cappamore\, and it served as an accurate indication of what to expect at the Limerick venue – level seven times once more on this occasion. \nExcept for the Ardscoil Rís opening point\, Cashel CS were never led in this encounter. They were ahead 0-8 to 0-6 at the break\, and subsequently had to sustain a large barrage of pressure from the All-Ireland champions as the North Circular Road school levelled this hugely entertaining game four times in the second-half. \nAs one would expect with so much at stake\, there were mistakes – a wide count of 13 (Ardscoil Rís) to 10 – but regardless of that statistic\, Cashel CS celebrated wildly at Cathal McAllister’s final whistle. \nSignificant contributions came from every line of the field. Jack Quinlan and Ger O’Dwyer were excellent in defence. Joint-captain Ronan Connolly angled over some really difficult frees. Goal-scorer David McGrath and Adam Daly sparkled in attack\, while number 12 Oisin O’Donoghue starred as an extra-defender. \nIt was a devastating loss for Liam Cronin’s Ardscoil Rís\, but credit their opponents whose undeniable hunger was a key element in victory. \nCashel CS\, managed by Brendan Ryan\, took a narrow lead 0-4 to 0-3 after the first quarter. It was left to free-taker Fintan Fitzgerald to tie matters\, 0-11 to 1-8 in the 49th minute. As well\, Cashel CS Ciarán Byrne produced an outstanding save when he cleared the sliotar off of his own line. \nThe final 10 minutes saw the teams tied three times. \nCashel CS hadn’t scored in quarter of an hour\, Connolly’s 51st minute free a welcome flag. No question but the Premier County has a fine crop of youngsters coming through. \nHammered by 15 points at this very juncture 12 months ago\, Thurles CBS won through to the school’s 19th Harty Cup final with 16 points to spare in this their latest semi-final appearance. \nAhead by 2-9 to 1-6 at the break\, the game was done as a contest within 80 seconds of the restart. \nFirst\, a Robbie Ryan free. This was a second period owned by the winners. \nTo the fore in this Thurles demolition job were Ryan and fellow inside colleague Jimmy Lahart. They finished with 1-5 and 2-2 respectively. Joe Maher and Robbie Stapleton were next up with four each from play. \nThurles’ half-time position was a commanding one. Their six-point interval lead was born out of a second quarter where they hit four points without reply. Probably more important though\, they held their opponents scoreless from the 15th minute onwards. \nMidleton\, by redeploying Timmy Wilk from half to full-back\, did succeed in curbing the influence of outstanding Thurles full-forward Jimmy Lahart during that second quarter. Their problems were now at the other end. \nWhere the Midleton forwards were turning and troubling the Thurles rearguard throughout a frenetic first quarter\, the avenues toward goal and scores completely dried up in the second 15 minutes. Key to this was the sweeper role effectively employed by Thurles centre-back Jim Ryan. \nIn an incredible 94-second period around the eighth minute\, this Harty semi witnessed three goals. First up was Lahart. Lahart again. \nBoth sides then traded a series of excellent points\, with the efforts of Jack Leahy for Midleton and Robbie Ryan for Thurles standing out. \nOn 15 minutes\, the scoreline read 2-5 to 1-6. There was no indication of the Thurles onslaught that was to follow. When we got the ball into the opposition’s half we were more accurate with our shooting. It was a tough physical battle in fairness as conditions were a bit sticky\, particularly in the first half and both sides got involved in rucks. But overall it was a good day out\, we have a good bit of work done and we haven’t picked up too many knocks so happy out.”  \nKerry were in the game for the opening quarter as they worked hard to limit a razor-sharp Limerick side who opened with two David Reidy frees\, and two points from impressive defenders Mark Quinlan and Aaron Costello. Kerry were contesting every ball and Shane Conway converted two frees while Eoin Ross landed two superb efforts from play. \nBut Limerick took over and went on a 0-8 run with Reidy adding three from frees and play while Ronan Connolly\, Barry Murphy and Michael Houlihan also got on the scoresheet. Kerry’s powerful midfielder Fionan Mackessy stopped the rot with another long-range effort but Limerick finished the half with another Mark Quinlan point\, as Limerick retired 0-13 to 0-5 in front at half time. \nIn the second half Kerry lacked the intensity they had against Cork\, with Ballybrown’s Colin Coughlan firing over an impressive four points\, while Quinlan impressed with three points from wing back with corner back Costello also catching the eye. \nFor Kerry Evan Murphy\, Keith Carmody and Daniel Collins were superb defensively along with swas buckling midfielder Fionan Mackessy who scored two points as did his partner Eoin Ross. \n\nInterview with Limerick Manager John Kiely \n\nJohn Kiely reacts to @LimerickCLG's win over @Kerry_Official in today's @CoOpSuperstores clash. The visitors had outscored their opponents by 1-13 to 1-3 in the preceding 40 minutes. At one stage midway through the second period\, Tipp’s lead was eight strong. \nAnd although a Brian Hayes goal on 55 minutes put a minor dent in the Tipp advantage\, a lead of six with only four minutes of regulation time remaining should have been sufficient\, particularly given the way Tipperary had held the whip hand throughout the second period. \nAnd then\, from nowhere\, Cork roused themselves for a madcap conclusion. \nSub Conor Lehane pointed. In the next play\, he provided the final pass to fellow sub Jack O’Connor. Goal Cork. O’Connor followed his goal with a point. The deficit down to one. \nIt was all Cork. Tipperary thought they and the silverware were on the bus and halfway back up the road. They hadn’t bargained for this. \nBrian Roche’s second brought the hosts level. A Patrick Horgan free\, following a foul on his Glen clubmate Robert Downey\, put Cork in front for the first time since the 25th minute. Jason Forde tied matters with his 14th. \nBut the final say of this contest went to Cork. O’Connor won the free\, Horgan did the necessary. \nTipperary had led 1-9 to 1-6 at the short whistle. Considering they trailed their hosts from the fifth to the 26th minute\, it was a lead they would have been more than content with. \nIt was a lead\, drilling down\, that had its source in the 1-4 Tipperary reeled off without reply in the 13 minutes before half-time. \nCork’s last score of the half was Robbie O’Flynn’s white flag on 21 minutes. It left them 1-6 to 0-5 in the clear. \nCorner-forward Colin Walsh had a chance shortly after to extend the gap out to five. His effort dropped short. It was the first of two occasions in the second quarter where a point attempt of his didn’t have the legs. There were also two Patrick Horgan missed frees during this 17-minute barren Cork spell. \nTipperary had been the more wasteful of the pair early doors. And although their interval wide count was greater\, seven to five\, they sharpened their collective radar as the half wore on. \nTheir goal arrived on 26 minutes. A one-two between Sean Ryan and Conor Stakelum ended with the former hitting the corner of the net. \nAs for their four unanswered points during this spell of blue supremacy\, three were Jason Forde frees. No more than Hoggy\, Forde was not as razor sharp as usual. Then again\, we’re still in mid-January. \nGo back to the Tipperary goal. The delivery was provided by half-back Brian McGrath. He struck the opening point of the game\, was fouled for a Jason Forde converted free\, and his catch set in train the move that ended with Seamus Kennedy firing over Tipp’s fifth of the afternoon. \nMcGrath ended up receiving the man of the match award. The main silverware\, though\, stayed on Leeside. The last Cork school standing of the five that made the Corn Uí Mhuirí quarter-finals\, responsibility for breaking the Kerry stranglehold on this competition sits with them. \nRoco’s comfortable victory in this afternoon’s all-Cork semi-final books the city school a first final appearance since 2015. That was also the last time a Cork school reached the decider. \nPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne edged the Roco class of 2015\, after a replay\, meaning you have to go back to Coláiste Chríost Rí in 2011 for the last time a Cork school held aloft the silverware for Munster’s premier schools football competition. \nThe last 10 editions of the Corn Uí Mhuirí have been shared by three Kerry schools. The challenge for Rochestown is to prevent an 11th consecutive season ending with success for a Kingdom nursery. Their final opponents will be reigning champions St Brendan’s College\, Killarney. The final is slated for two weeks from today. \nDespite not scoring their first point from play until the 26th minute\, St Francis led 0-5 to 0-4 at the interval. \nThe winners had struggled for so long to plug gaps in a parked and organised Bishopstown defence. At one point midway through the first half\, Rochestown midfielder Mark O’Rourke\, encircled by a cluster of red shirts 30 metres from the opposition posts\, handpassed possession to nobody and the attack broke down. It was just one of many similar examples. \nRob Hanley finally had Rochestown on the mark from play after 26 minutes. The beginning of a mini burst. Next up was Cork U20 hurler Kevin Lyons\, his 30th minute point capping an impressive first half shift from the Roco midfielder. Completing the Rochestown three-in-a-row was Evan O’Connor\, his point originating from a turnover by Coláiste an Spioraid Naoimh’s Odhran Foley at the other end of the field. \nRobert Quirke’s free for Bishopstown in the fourth minute of first half injury time was their first white flag since Gary Holland put them 0-3 to 0-1 in front 10 minutes in. \nRochestown’s lead swelled to four in the fourth minute of the second period\, Mark O’Rourke collecting the breaking ball and scrambling it to the net. Corner-back Tim O’Brien split the posts two minutes later\, the winners now having outscored their opponents 1-5 to 0-1 from the 10th minute onward. \nFour was as close as the Bishopstown students got during a scrappy and stop-start second half. It was in keeping with what was a poor game lacking any semblance of fluidity. And so while delighted to be back in the final\, Rochestown won’t need telling that they’ll have to pull a performance from a much higher draw next time out. \nDerry Howard could have had a second goal for Rochestown\, his effort well kept out by Sean Cronin. Callum Cronin beat Michael Tansley in a footrace and kicked the ball into an empty net to put his side 1-6 to 0-6 to the good. Jamie Moynihan then made it a four-point game at the break. \nMounthawk’s Paddy Lane forced a big save out of Shay O’Meara in the Sem goal in the third minute as the majority of scores in the first period came from turnovers. Bobby Byrne was black-carded for Mounthawk in the 22nd minute as they had led on the scoreboard for much of the first period until a Luke Crowley free put the Sem 0-6 to 0-5 up in the 24th minute. \nThe Sem would have been very happy to have led at the break only 72 hours after their quarter-final win over Bandon. Watch it with #GAANOW. pic.twitter.com/04y97eX1U5 \n— The GAA (@officialgaa) January 31\, 2023 \n  \n\n\nGlen duo start as Derry cruise past Limerick in league opener https://t.co/Z375VXrVwv \n— Irish Examiner Sport (@ExaminerSport) January 28\, 2023 \n  \nGlen duo start as Derry cruise past Limerick in league opener \nAllianz League Division 2  \nDerry 0-16  Limerick 0-4  \nReport by Michael Wilson for the Irish Examiner newspaper \nNine-point Shane McGuigan kicked Derry to a comfortable victory over Limerick in their Division 2 opener at Owenbeg on Saturday. \nMcGuigan was superb in a game in which the home side never had to get out of second gear to pick up the two points as Ray Dempsey’s competitive debut as Limerick manager ended in defeat. \nAll the pre-match talk centred on the inclusion of Derry’s Glen trio Conor Glass\, Ethan Doherty and Conleth McGuckian and despite rumours to the contrary\, both Glass and Doherty started in a strong looking Derry 15. \nThe Ulster champions were odds-on favourites to start with a win and the one sided opening half did little to dispel the notion\, McGuigan hitting four points as Gallagher’s team eased to a 0-7 to 0-2 half-time lead without ever hitting anything like top gear. \nLimerick were without last season’s leading scorer Josh Ryan and his absence was keenly felt as the Treaty County saw Adrian Enright register Limerick’s solitary score of a half in which the often sat deep and invited Derry on. The visitor’s kick-out was inviting pressure and Derry had the ball in the net after only two minutes but Lachlan Murray’s joy was short lived as the goal was ruled out with Ethan Doherty having been adjudged to have over carried in the build up. \nDerry were far from their best\, wayward shooting puncturing their almost constant attacking\, but once Paul Cassidy got the scoreboard up and running on seven minutes\, there was only one winner. \nNiall Toner (free) and McGuigan had Derry three up before Enright’s fisted effort for the visitors but thereafter it was one way first half traffic as McGuigan (3) and Toner eased Derry to their five point interval advantage. It probably could have been more as both Paul Cassidy and McKinless were close to finding the net but despite the lead\, the Oak Leaf boss will not have been satisfied with the opening 35 minutes. \nThe second half was a similarly one way procession for the home side\, the only doubt Derry’s margin of victory. McGuigan and Gordon Browne traded scores inside the opening five minutes\, as did McGuigan and Iain Corbett\, but thereafter the home side regained dominance with a minimum of fuss. \nEthan Doherty had the ball in the Limerick net again but referee Niall Mooney had already blown for a free while Cillian Fahy produced a superb block to stop Murray’s goal-bound effort but the lack or threat at the other end meant those misses were never going to be critical. \nFive points in succession from McGuigan (2)\, Paul Cassidy\, Murray and Toner eased Derry to a 0-14 to 0-4 lead more representative of their control with five minutes left. \nA late black card for Limerick’s Paul Maher only made the run in al the more comfortable for the home side as both Doherty and Glass were withdrawn in the closing stages. \nA beautiful late McGuigan solo effort capped an excellent individual display from the Slaughtneil man\, one that brought him nine points\, and it was job done for Derry. But Conor Francis’ goal gave them the cushion they needed in front of 1\,013 spectators at Semple Stadium. \nDown defended in numbers\, denying Tipperary so much as a shot from play in the first half\, as the Premier’s high ball tactic failed to make any inroads before their bench began to make an impact. \nWhen Down attacked\, they went for the jugular. Eamon Brown took a simple scorable free from the 21m line short\, seeking a goal\, while Barry O’Hagan was reluctant to kick another at the target from 35 metres out in front of the posts. In the end\, he hurriedly booted it wide. It was a rare blip in those opening stages. \nPat Havern showed superb movement floating around the attacking zone and kicked their opening two points\, the first from a mark\, followed by a fine Odhrán Murdock score. \nSeán O’Connor had four scoreable frees but only pointed one\, on 15 minutes\, before being taken off at half-time. Their other two first-half placed balls from distance were taken by Jack Kennedy\, scoring a free in the 31st minute. \nDown made their winning move at the start of the second quarter\, firing 1-3 in the space of six minutes. After slotting two points\, Eamon Brown picked out Havern with a brilliant reverse pass that wrongfooted the Tipp cover. The full-forward made no mistake when in on goal. \nWhen Havern added a 22nd-minute point\, it was Down’s last of the half. \nO’Hagan was black-carded for a late tackle on Teddy Doyle and the visitors set about killing the clock\, restricting Tipperary’s efforts to two frees in that 10-minute period. Kennedy’s effort left it 1-6 to 0-2 at half-time. \nSteven O’Brien was brought into the Tipp attack at half-time and the big Ballina man made an immediate impact\, carving out an opportunity from Sweeney. It was Tipp’s first chance and first point from play in the 38th minute. \nMcParland was sent off for his second yellow card\, after a high tackle\, and Tipp supporters started to sense an opportunity as Mikey O’Shea brought the gap back to five. \nThe teams were trading frees before Mark Russell\, just on a sub\, kicked two huge points with his first two touches to twice narrow the deficit to four. Each time\, however\, Down substitute Andrew Gilmore kicked the next point. \nTipp appeared to have given away their chance when keeper Michael O’Reilly got caught under Gilmore’s high delivery and Francis tapped into an empty net. 2-10 to 1-9 after 61 minutes. \nBut Tipp hit back three minutes later when Doyle capitalised on a loose ball to finish to the net. Donough Leahy\, another sub\, added the next two points\, either side of Gilmore cracking the Tipp crossbar with a vicious shot\, to leave it a two-point game entering six minutes of stoppage time. \nHavern won and pointed a free to settle Down nerves but they felt shakier when a goal chance fell to O’Brien from a 45. Opening round deflation for John Cleary and Cork. \nDespite failing to lead this game between the eighth and 52nd minute\, two second half goals were crucial in sending Meath back up the road with maximum points. \nFor Cork\, their inability to make a winning start in Division 2 remains perfectly and unwantedly intact. Since dropping to the second division for the 2017 season\, they have failed to win their opening round game in the six seasons since. The outlier during this period was the 2020 winning start in Division 3. \nA significant problem in this latest opening round League setback was the complete lack of spread in terms of scorers. Steven Sherlock kicked all bar five of their 0-19 total. Failure to capitalise on even just one of their many goal chances also hurt the hosts. \nMeath’s decisive burst came between the 52nd and 57th minute. During this five-minute spell\, they kicked 1-4 without reply to move from three behind to four in front. Jordan Morris with the goal\, Jason Scully with the assist. \nSherlock replied with a free. But then another Meath goal. Cillian O’Sullivan the provider. In 10 minutes\, they had outscored the hosts 2-4 to 0-1. \nAt 3-12 to 0-15 in front\, they would not be caught. \nCork had led 0-11 to 1-6 at the interval\, seven of those 11 white flags coming from the boot of Sherlock. \nIt was a first half where Cork were the more dominant side\, as evidenced by the fact that Meath managed only one score in the opening 17 minutes. Crucially\, though\, that score was a Shane Walsh goal\, a green flag that kept Meath more than in the hunt at a time when they were second chair in most sectors of the field. \nCork’s use of possession in the opposition half of the field was too lateral. It lacked for incisiveness. \nOn one occasion where they did cut through\, Sean Powter slipping Mattie Taylor inside the cover on 18 minutes\, the latter’s goal shot was saved out for a ‘45 by Meath ‘keeper Harry Hogan. \nHis opposite number Michéal Aodh Martin was equally effective later in the half\, producing a superb double save to deny Darragh Campion and Jordan Morris. \nThe goal chances were far more plentiful in the Meath ledger. Still\, despite being profligate in the second half when hitting ten wides they looked to have done the hard work when taking the lead for the first time in the 60th minute when Malone raided from the half-back line for a point to make it 0-9 to 0-8. \nThey’d trailed by 0-6 to 0-3 at half-time after Louth were largely dominant when playing with the breeze.
