Now the player dubbed Ballygunner’s hottest prospect since Paul Flynn is making up for lost time on the road back to Croke Park. \nHe has goaled in all three of his Munster championship appearances for a total of 3-9\, 1-4 of that at Semple Stadium on Saturday\, and won two man of the match awards. He departed to a huge ovation in the 59th minute. \nPauric Mahony added 0-10\, three from play\, as Ballygunner outscored Ballyea by 0-12 to 0-4 from the 34th minute to full-time. They have now won three of the last four Munster titles and knocked out Ballyea in their past three campaigns at provincial level. \nSince their double-extra-time victory of 2018 over the same opponents\, Ballygunner have evolved to a new level across their team and extended panel. They march into the final four in a fortnight’s time with confidence as they now bid to defend their All-Ireland title. \nIf body language was a sign of the threat Ballyea intended to pose to Ballygunner’s crown\, Tony Kelly\, who ended with 0-11\, gave fair warning that they were aiming both barrels at the Gunners. He celebrated a 16th-minute levelling point with a double first pump; one to himself\, the other to the 2\,507 crowd. A moment later\, he gave Paddy Leavey a pat on the back\, hardly in consolation\, after he was booked for his second foul on Kelly. That free put Ballyea ahead but for the last time in the match. \nBallygunner goaled from the puck-out\, Mahony slipping in Fitzgerald who skittled the sliotar low to the net. 1-6 to 0-7 after 20 minutes. \nBallyea’s threat came almost exclusively from deep positions. Bar points from Pearse Lillis\, Kelly\, and Niall Deasy\, their other eight first-half points all came from on or outside the 65. Lillis’s effort was their only point inside the 45 and that came under pressure on the old stand sideline. Stephen O’Keeffe’s goal never came under threat until Aaron Griffin flashed a shot across the posts early in the second half. \nThe bulk of the goal chances were Ballygunner’s. Peter Casey blocked a close-range shot from Dessie Hutchinson\, Hutchinson miscontrolled with another sight of gal\, and Brandon O’Connell robbed Patrick Fitzgerald as he eyed the net. Fitzgerald shot wide and forced a save from Barry Coote with two more early in the second half. \nTheir threat was more varied and based closer to green-flag danger than Ballyea’s. All six forwards registered from play in the first half as they defended that goal advantage to the half\, 1-11 to 0-11 ahead. \nKelly and Mossy Gavin narrowed that gap to one but Griffin’s goal chance was as close as they got to a lead. From there to the end Ballygunner outscored them by 0-12 to 0-4. Fitzgerald provided three from play\, Hutchinson two\, and Pauric Mahony two more\, supplemented by four frees. Kevin Mahony and Peter Hogan were the definition of industry in their work supplying those scores\, while their back-line never allowed their goal to be troubled in the frantic final minutes of Ballyea pressure. \nKelly gave a majestic display for the first 40 minutes of this defeat\, akin to his Munster final heroics for Clare against Limerick. But a missed 43rd-minute free from distance drew a gasp from the crowd\, despite the high difficulty level\, and his day ended in frustration. \nNine-in-a-row Waterford champions. Back-to-back Munster champions. A regrading in Cork meant they qualified for the provincial competition\, and they grasped the opportunity with enthusiasm. \nAn unforgettable weekend too for Shane Beston\, who got married on Saturday. They were led by an outstanding performance from the wing-forward\, a hat-trick of goals supplied by the man-of-the-match in the opening half set them on their way. He finished with 3-3 – and all from play. \nSignificant too for skipper Fionn Herlihy who captained his side to Munster honours two seasons in-a-row. \nWest Limerick side St Kieran’s were always chasing a result. As well\, they were dependent on their hard-working captain Ian Mackessy for their scores. He tallied 10 of their 11. \nWith the breeze\, St Kieran’s couldn’t have asked for a better start with Darragh Treacy pointing in the third minute. However\, Joseph O’Sullivan responded with a ’65 a minute later. \nThere was a stoppage then for an injury to St Kieran’s James Muckell\, who had to retire. When play resumed\, Shane Beston finished a great four-man move involving Barry Coffey\, Cathail O’Mahony and Seán O’Sullivan\, to the net. \nBeston’s marker Jack Ben Hartnett picked up a yellow card around the same time. \nBallygiblin\, opting for O’Mahony and Seán O’Sullivan in the inside line and to good effect\, stretched their advantage when Beston latched onto a Killian Roche delivery for Ballygiblin’s second goal in the 17th minute. \nMackessy’s fourth point from a placed ball left the score\, 2-2 to 0-5 on the approach to half-time. \nWith at least six minutes of stoppage\, there was time for plenty more action. Mackessy rifled over a huge point from out the field but St Kieran’s missed a couple of vital chances to draw level. \nWhen an O’Mahony shot came back off the post\, Beston found himself in the right place to complete his hat-trick. It enabled the north Cork team lead at the interval 3-2 to 0-7 at the interval. \nTwenty seconds into the second-half\, Beston added a point to his tally. Mackessy did his best to try and reel them back in\, but Joseph O’Sullivan made sure he kept the Ballygiblin scoreboard moving\, 3-6 to 0-9 at the three-quarter mark. \nAs the wides added up for St Kieran’s\, Joseph O’Sullivan stretched the lead with unerring accuracy for Dave Moher’s charges. \nHeading into the fourth quarter\, they outscored the Limerick club six points to two. \nIn a game with just four scorers – two for each side – it is Ballygiblin who head into the All-Ireland series. Eleven of those were dead-ball efforts. \nIt was O’Dwyer who was at the heart of Monaleen’s clinical second-half start that ultimately proved the game’s defining period. \nAhead by 0-11 to 0-10 at the break\, the Limerick champions outgunned their opponents 0-7 to 0-1 in the 10 minutes after half-time. It was a burst that put seven between the sides. It was a burst where O’Dwyer converted five frees. Half-back Ronan Lyons and full-forward Ed Doyle were also on the mark as the Limerick lads stretched their legs and their lead. \nDoyle was to be a pivotal actor in this provincial deicder later in the second period. Roscrea fought and fought to peg back the seven-point deficit. Contradictory too. \nA dozen wides had been split evenly between the sides as early as the 13th minute. Both radars had had a Sunday lie-in. The overworked umpires were flat out waving. \nThe 12 wides dwarfed the four points registered inside these opening 13 minutes\, also split evenly between the sides. We also had a Monaleen saved goal chance. The target was as elusive as it was evasive. \nAnd then\, like the flick of a light switch\, the floodgates opened. Scores rained in from all manner of angles and distances. A drought to a deluge. 12 points\, again split evenly\, in 10 minutes. A 10-minute period that contained not a single wide. \nThe opening period was level eight times. It finished with Monaleen one ahead\, 0-11 to 0-10. \nO’Dwyer was the game’s top scorer breaking for a half-time cup of tea. He clipped four frees and one less from play. His corner-forward teammate Donnacha Ó Dálaigh was also making a nuisance of himself. He twice rose white flags. \nAt the other end\, Luke Cashin had five to his name. Four from the dead-ball. Evan Fitzpatrick and Conor Sheedy both contributed a pair. \nBut Roscrea lost a yard of pace on their opponents at the beginning of the second half. That yard became a couple of metres. The gap eventually became too big to bridge. \nA year after being relegated from the Limerick senior ranks\, Monaleen have bounced back with county and Munster titles. The tie remained delicately poised as a result of traded points between Slashers wing-back Clare Farrell and opposition attacker Aoibhe O’Shea (sister of Lorraine)\, before the Longford side created additional daylight through Jessica Barry and marauding defender Orla Nevin. \nThere was even more reason for Slashers to be cheerful on 23 minutes\, when a speculative effort from Grace Shannon crept into the back of the Mullinahone net. \nThe impressive Nevin subsequently broke forward for a second point and while Lorraine O’Shea knocked over another free at the far end of the Jones’ Road venue\, Slashers ultimately led 2-4 to 0-4 at the interval. \nThis six-point gap remained intact after dead-ball specialists Lorraine O’Shea and Barry cancelled out each other on the resumption\, but the Longford and Leinster supremos pulled further in front with a mini scoring blitz. \nPreceding a point by wing-forward Kyana Lee\, Grace Shannon got on the end of an intricate team move to clinically secure her second goal of the contest. \nAlthough Aoibhe O’Shea interrupted this sequence with a fine point\, unanswered scores from sisters Kate (two) and Grace Shannon left Mullinahone with too much of a mountain to climb. \nMoving into the final-quarter\, Aoibhe O’Shea and Kate Shannon swapped points in advance of Nevin rattling the net in ruthless fashion. \nThe tireless Lorraine O’Shea did offer Mullinahone considerable solace with superbly-taken goals in the 52nd and 56th minutes\, but even though Chloe Gunn bagged a late point\, last season’s All-Ireland junior finalists couldn’t deny the magnificent Slashers. \nScorers – Longford Slashers: G Shannon 2-0\, O Nevin 1-2\, A Cosgrove 1-0\, J Barry (0-2f)\, Kate Shannon 0-3 each\, C Farrell\, K Lee\, Kara Shannon 0-1 each. In the intervening period\, Newcastle West scored twice\, the first a free by Eoin Hurley after Sheehan had been upended. Shane Stack sent over a long effort from play in the 11th minute. \nSavage sent over a 50-metre free in the 13th minute to square matters but Newcastle West were back in front when Hurley converted another free earned by the roving Sheehan. \nFour yellow cards were dished out in the opening 16 minutes in some testy exchanges and some of referee Seán Lonergan’s decisions drew the ire of both sets of supporters. \nThe only goal chance of the half fell to Tommy Walsh in the 23rd minute when he caught and turned only for his shot to be blocked. Savage then dropped another long-range free short and in a moment that summed up O’Rahillys’ frustrations and had shades of the semi-final David Moran was penalised for charging. \nRegistering five first-half wides\, Newcastle West themselves were edgy but they looked sharper with ball in hand and Iain Corbett shot a mighty point to double their lead in the 29th minute. \nA Walsh mark in additional time brought the Kerry club champions to within a point\, 0-3 to 0-4\, after a largely forgettable half of football. \nScorers for Kerins O’Rahillys: T. In sunshine or in sleet\, on a summer’s day big stage or a Baltic field in the depths of winter\, David Clifford reigns supreme. Fossa are Munster club junior champions. Their prized son adds another jewel to an already glittering crown. \nHe finishes 2022 with a winner’s medal from the McGrath Cup\, National League\, Munster championship\, All-Ireland championship\, Kerry county championship\, Kerry junior championship and this provincial final. His calendar year scoring tally is a frightening 20-169 after ten points today. \nIt started with a roar. Kilmurry won the throw-in and took off. When David McCarthy received possession at the edge of the square\, the goal was on but his fisted effort crept over. The cheer from the stand was thunderous. It would be 15 minutes before they would score again and once more it was a goal chance. Daniel Cahalane handpassed over an oncoming defender and regathered before rifling over a right-footed effort. \nMeanwhile\, Clifford started putting the finishing touches on his 2022 masterpiece. It was a diverse tapestry of scores; starting with a free from the 45. He came on the loop and slotted over for his first from play\, by now a trademark turn. By half-time his total was six. \nTo their credit\, Kilmurry came to terms with the tie and centre-forward Liam Well can claim the honour of score of the game with a monster from range. After a slow start\, Paudie Clifford came to the fore working a one-two from a long-distance free and scoring before adding another just after. At the turnaround\, the gap was five. \nIt was telling and a tribute to coach Éamonn Fitzmaurice that Fossa deployed a full 12-man press after frees. Trickle down tactics in action\, a move Kerry successfully used to crack Stephen Cluxton now the method of choice in a junior fixture. \nWhile this junior decider was always likely to be defined by the grandeur of already one of the greatest players in Gaelic football’s storied history\, Kilmurry’s spirited challenge deserves praise. At the start of the second half a long kick towards McCarthy saw him win possession out in front and square to Wall who finally raised a deserved green flag. They went after the kick-out and Padraic Berhanu followed it up with a point. \nA second yellow for Eoin Talbot saw Fossa reduced to 14 and they needed a response. They got it from their pair of brothers. First\, Tadhg fed Emmett O’Shea for his second of the day. Then Paudie Clifford kicked his third and David added three more frees. \nAs the clock ticked down\, the announcer repeatedly pleaded with supporters to not enter the field. An effort to keep the pitch clear for the following game and inadvertently avoid the now routine Clifford invasion. \nHeavy lies the head? Spiers kicked six of those\, while Kerry goalkeeper Shane Ryan\, playing at corner-forward\, showcased his long-range kicking with a 45 and free. Their points from play came from impressive captain Mark Ryan and John Moynihan. \nNa Piarsaigh’s points were spread across the opening half but all four came from play\, with Kieran Daly scoring two. They trailed by five when Reuben McCarthy sent Cathal McMullen in on goal but his punched effort was deflected over the bar by full-back Andrew Moynihan. \nRathmore came right down the other end and Cathal Ryan played in Fionn Holohan but Eoghan Sherlock pushed it around the post. \nDaly got Na Piarsaigh up and running with a 45 on the restart and he almost had them right back in it when cracking a shot off the crossbar after Dylan Cronin intercepted the subsequent kick-out. When Daly added another from play\, the gap was four. \nBut Spiers added his first from play and kept tapping over his frees. When the goal came in the 44th minute\, that ended it. It was Darragh Rahilly who made the incisive run\, picked out by James Darmody\, and finished to the net. It was his final act\, replaced by Mark Reen to cheers from the Rathmore support. We’re county champions\, we’re provincial champions\,” said O’Connell. \n“I’m delighted. We’ve had a long day\, early set-up but the girls just kept their eye on the ball. They opened up a little\, they were very good.   \n“We didn’t make it easy for ourselves for a period in the second half but they were very good. We knew there was going to be a sting there somewhere.” \nIt was the first ever Ladies football All-Ireland final for Salthill-Knocknacarra\, with Caltra Cuans the only other Galway club to win this particular competition\, when they were victorious back in 2010.\nDonoughmore\, Glanmire\, and Aghada had all tasted success for the Rebel County in the junior decider in recent years\, but Naomh Abán couldn’t bring that confidence and momentum in the opening quarter. \nSalthill-Knocknacarra were 0-3 to 0-0 ahead by the 12th minute with efforts from Kate Thompson\, Laura Kelly\, and Lauren O’Donnell. Thompson (two) and Kelly added further points before the break and Salthill-Knocknacarra looked in complete control. \nBut Naomh Abán had been impressive in their journey to the final and scored the first three points of the second half. Eimear Murphy\, Grace Murphy\, and Lydia McDonagh were all on target. \nKelly stopped the rot for Salthill-Knocknacarra and with Naomh Abán pushing to get back on terms\, the leaders broke before Manley finished off a swift move to seal the win in the 60th minute. \n“Everyone wanted to play it today. They were full value for their two-point lead when Cathail O’Mahony – one of two inside forwards along with Sean O’Sullivan – pointed a minute later. \nHoreswood had plenty of chances\, but they had to wait until the 13th minute for teenager Cathal Parker to raise a flag after the referee consulted with his umpires. \nThe north Cork side moved 0-3 to 0-2 ahead on the quarter hour mark. They received a timely boost when O’Mahony set up Darragh Flynn for a cracking goal on 19 minutes. \nSurging runs through the middle from Declan Murphy resulted in Sean Stafford and Conor Foley points. \nBallygiblin\, however\, kept their opponents at arms length. Both Mayo and Limerick clubs will be at this stage for the very first time. \nThese sides were level 11 times\, with five of these coming in the opening half. The Wicklow side\, wind assisted\, inched ahead\, 0-11 to 0-10 at the short whistle. The lead came from the stick of sharpshooter Christy Moorhouse\, who ended with 13 points. He was joined on the scoresheet by the dangerous Michael Boland. \nIn reply\, Monaleen had Ed Doyle in top form\, while Luke Murphy and Donnacha Ó Dalaigh took scores when they found some room. \nThe third quarter proved to be equally as tight\, with youngster Ronan Lyons stepping up with long-range scores for the Limerick outfit. \nBut Bray didn’t go away and led when sub Brian Nesbitt landed a wonderful effort on 52 minutes. But moments later Andrew La Touche Cosgrave buried low\, having received a handpass from Ed Doyle. \nBray got the next two from Moorehouse to level again\, but Monaleen kicked for home\, with Dan Power landing the crucial goal. A green flag could have saved Bray\, but as it did in Leinster\, it eluded them. \nUltimately the game had 21 scores to 20\, it was decided by the goals\, something Monaleen manager Eoin Brislane was quick to point out. \n“We got the goals at the right time. All credit to Bray\, they were super\, especially after playing a Leinster final last Saturday. \n“We had to grind it out today\, a real battle\, a great game”\, beamed the Toomevara native. \nThe second goal\, on 58 minutes\, was from a tight angle. \n“Doctor Dan (Power) did a serious operation at the end\, he sliced it in. You have to be in the right position to get those goals. We had a man on the shoulder and we stuck to the plan. \n“When I met the committee at the start of the year\, it was ‘get us to the last four in Limerick’… now we are in the last two in Ireland. We are enjoying the journey. Reid’s first penalty strike two minutes later when Philip Mahony brought down Colin Fennelly. \nHowever\, Reid’s second bite of the cherry in the 49th minute was too hot for him. Reid himself had been tripped by Shane O’Sullivan just as he was about to unload from close distance. \nReid later stretched the gap to five points and while Ballygunner twice came within three of them\, Shamrocks held out\, Dean Mason making a vital save himself from Dessie Hutchinson in the 50th minute. \nEven if Ballygunner had the better of the first half in general play\, O’Keeffe had to pull off two top-drawer saves. The first denial came in the 10th minute as Adrian Mullen angled in from the left wing and O’Keeffe’s parry was sent over the bar by Colin Fennelly. In the 28th minute\, O’Keeffe was again level to a Mullen effort after a slick move involving Darragh Corcoran and substitute Niall Shortall. \nShamrocks were forced to make two injury-enforced changes in the opening half\, Brian Butler coming on for Darren Mullen and Shortall for Cuddihy seven minutes later. For a side that made no alterations during their nervy Leinster final win over Kilmacud Crokes\, it was awkward but they went into the break on equal terms with the Munster champions\, 11 points apiece. \nShamrocks had run up a three-point lead after two minutes but Ballygunner had cancelled it out by the 10th minute and went ahead for the first time in the 16th minute. O’Keeffe’s puck-outs were even more exemplary than his shot-stopping and he was key to a couple of scores midway through the half. \nOn three occasions\, Ballygunner opened two-point leads in the opening period\, the last of them when Mike Mahony sent over a 27th minute score.
