Déise shake off gutsy UL fightback

McGrath Cup: Waterford 1-16 University of Limerick 2-7

Waterford withstood a second-half fightback from UL to post the first victory of Tom McGlinchey’s tenure at a calm Carriganore yesterday. The Déise held an 11-point lead at one stage but two Gearóid Hegarty goals brought the students within three. But Waterford settled and late points from Patrick Hurney and Gavin Nugent secured the win to set up a quarter-final against Cork IT next week. McGlinchey was pleased and his side’s display saw nine different scorers and 1-15 from play.

“It was good to get the win and we are happy we have another game Sunday,” he said. “There was a lot to work on but they started well. We knew UL would be physically fit and they came at us in the second half. The lads weathered the storm well and finished strongly. There is a lot to work on but still very happy with the performance.”

The new boss welcomed back full forward trio Patrick Hurney, Gavin Nugent and Joey Veale to the fold after a year away and they contributed 1-7 from play between them. “We want the best players playing for Waterford and it’s great to have those three back because they hadn’t played last year, for one reason or another. All three made a huge contribution. Joey was a big loss when he went off with an injury but he will be right again. Gavin Nugent carried the game in the second half when we needed him at centre forward and Podge is only getting back training now so once he has another few weeks under his belt, he’ll get better again.”

Michael O’Halloran and Ray Ó Ceallaigh made competitive debuts in an experienced line-up. The hosts started well and a direct approach yielded a 1-8 to 0-2 half-time lead. A flowing three-man move featuring Veale and Paul Whyte allowed Hurney goal after seven minutes. The returning Ballinacourty attacker posted 1-3 in all. Paul Whyte orchestrated things at centre-forward and kicked four points (three from play).

Waterford raced 11 points clear on the restart as David Grey and Tommy Prendergast landed points. But then the students, managed by Liam Kearns, staged a mini-recovery. Gearoid Hegarty caught a Denis Daly delivery on 48 minutes and fired to the bottom corner. The Limerick midfielder touched home a second to leave just three points separating the teams. But late doubles from Hurney and Nugent lifted the pressure off Waterford.
