SHC Semi-Final: Cats survive Limerick storm

GAA Hurling All-Ireland Senior Championship Semi-Final: Kilkenny 2-13 Limerick 0-17

Report from GAA.ie

Kilkenny are through to the All-Ireland final following a heroic defeat of Limerick in a thrilling semi-final at Croke Park on Sunday.
Goals from Richie Hogan just before the break and Eoin Larkin in the second half proved the difference for the Cats, who were under intense pressure for long stages of a gripping, if manic, game played in terrible conditions.

Without a championship win over Kilkenny since the 1973 All-Ireland final, Limerick led by three points on the half hour mark and then by two midway through the second, but Kilkenny’s goals came at just the right time on each occasion, and Brian Cody’s charges repelled Limerick in the closing stages to record a narrow win.

Limerick hurled up a storm in the first half, but still went in two points down at the break. They were 0-6 to 0-4 up after 17 minutes, having played with a manic intensity that caught everyone – even Kilkenny, it seemed – by surprise. Their first five scores all came from play and came from five different players.

Kilkenny, by contrast, hit eight wides in the first half and only Michael Fennelly, who had a super opening 35 minutes, seemed at the pace of the game in the early stages, even if his younger brother Colin did manage to fire over three first half points. Limerick were still three up, 0-10 to 0-7, by the half hour mark, Shane Dowling scoring an audacious one-handed point after getting the better of JJ Delaney.

But the zip went from Limerick’s play and Kilkenny came to life in the driving rain. Colin Fennelly and Pádraig Walsh snapped over points and, on the stroke of half-time, Kilkenny got a killer goal. TJ Reid, who was well marhsalled by Séamus Hickey, was fouled by Donal O’Grady, but he managed to offload to Richie Hogan who fired home a terrific goal to leave Kilkenny 1-9 to 0-10 ahead.

Limerick regained their composure in the second half and, amid a monumental shower that darkened the skies to such an extent that the lights had to be switched on, they came at Kilkenny again with a spell of sustained pressure. Shane Dowling brought the Shannonsiders level and then Seánie Tobin and Dowling again had them two clear and in a commanding position midway though the second half.

However, in the 56th minute, shortly after Cody had brought Henry Shefflin and Richie Power off the bench, Kilkenny hit back with a killer goal. A high ball was played into a crowded square, and while Richie Power looked to have gotten his hurl to it first, but subsequent replays appeared to show that Larkin flicked the ball to the back of the net.

TJ Reid clipped over a free soon after the goal and Kilkenny were two clear. Declan Hannon replied with a beauty from play, but Kilkenny should have had a penalty near the end when Donal O’Grady fouled Power when the Carrickshock man was through on goal. In the end, James McGrath awarded a free which Reid tapped over.

Limerick came at Kilkenny as relentlessly as the rain in the closing stages, but the Cats defended like dogs, and in a final act of defiance, it was Paul Murphy who emerged from a crowd of players with the ball in the final play before McGrath blew his whistle, sparking wild celebrations from Cody and the Kilkenny players, who failed to make the last four in 2013.
