Munster Council Meeting – September 27th 2012

Saturday 29 September 2012

Thursday September 27th 2012 will go down in history as the first ever meeting to be held in the new Munster GAA offices at Castletroy, Limerick. Munster GAA Chairman Sean Walsh welcomed all present and paid tribute to the officers and delegates past and present who helped to achieve the objective of building a purpose built facility to provide a home for all GAA activities in the province of Munster. The official opening of the new Munster GAA offices by GAA President Liam O’Neill will take place on Saturday September 29th.

Munster Council delegates agreed to extend the contract of the current Munster GAA CEO Pat Fitzgerald by a further five years to 2018.

A meeting of the Munster CCC was held earlier in the evening. Delegates were informed that the GAA Senior Championship draws in hurling and football would take place on Thursday October 4th. The suggestion of a seeded draw in the Munster Senior Football Championship was brought up at a full meeting of Munster Council on June 8th but was never more than a topic for discussion in conjunction with many other topics. While there was much subsequent comment on the proposed return to a seeded draw in Football, the reality is that no request or motion for a change to this rule has been made and consequently, the draw for the 2013 Munster Senior Hurling and Senior Football Championship will be open as in previous years.

Munster GAA CEO Pat Fitzgerald confirmed that the inter-county competitions in Junior Football and Intermediate Hurling will remain in place for the 2013 season.

The Munster CCC also confirmed that the 2013 Waterford Crystal Cup Senior Hurling competition would begin in mid-January to look to avoid a direct clash with the Fitzgibbon Cup competitions which caused problems for third-level colleges teams in 2012.  The McGrath Cup Senior Football competition will begin as normal on the first weekend of January.
