Waterford Crystal Cup Senior Hurling Preliminary Round – Kerry 1-20 IT Tralee 1-15

January 29, 2012 @ 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm

KERRY LEAVE IT LATE AS TRALEE ARE FLOORED BY A FLYING BRICK

The Waterford Crystal Hurling – Preliminary Round

Kerry 1-20 IT Tralee 1-15

By Murt Murphy for kerrygaa.ie

KERRY recorded their first ever Waterford Crystal Cup victory thanks to Shane Brick’s 12-point haul against IT Tralee in a preliminary round game at Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney today. John Egan scored the first point of the 2012 for Kerry and overall it was a useful exercise. Kerry boss John Meyler spoke to www.kerrygaa.ie after the game “We were just a small bit rusty today. It was our first competitive match and we scored 1-20, which I was delighted with. It was great to have Shane Brick back. At times we played very well and there were times when we turned over the ball too much and gave away some silly frees. But overall I am pleased with the effort and that is what you are looking for at this time of the year” The Kerry boss is very much looking forward to playing Cork next Sunday and he believes it will be educational for the Kerry lads ” I think that the Cork game is important now, and they will test us. We will see where are weak because they will expose us, it will be quicker hurling and we try and work on that this week. It will also be very good preparation for the start of the League.”

In fact it’s to the start of the League that Meyler’s thoughts are now firmly focussed “It has to be our main objective this year. There are six teams in Division 2 this year and they all are capable of winning Division 2 and each county will have its their goal, to win Division 2 and get into Division1B. The likes of Westmeath, Carlow, Down and Wicklow have made great strides so it is going to be extremely competitive. Our first match is away to Westmeath, four weeks today and they were down today having a look at us.”

The Kerry boss is looking forward to getting some players back. “We had a few problems coming into today with the four lads getting their Christy Ring awards in Dublin last night and Tom Murnane and Shane Nolan was playing with Munster yesterday afternoon so it wasn’t the greatest preparation in terms of today. I was delighted to have Shane Brick back, he is vital to us. Rory Horgan came in and made a good start to his intercounty career. Hopefully now we will have Andrew Keane back, Willie O’Dwyer ( not for game against Cork), Padraig Boyle into the forwards so have another four players to come back into the squad and that will strengthen us again”

But Meyler thinks that the Cork game is ideal “Look it is important against Cork that we keep our shape and our structure because Cork will be too strong for us. It like doing honours maths in the Leaving Cert – you are going to be tested – but it’s better to get a pass in an honours paper than an honour in a Pass paper and it’s an education we want next Sunday – the touch- the pace, the striking of the Cork lads will be superior than anything we have met or are likely to meet for the rest of the year so it will an ideal outing for us in many ways. But I was pleased with today and it gets the year off on the right note”

After IT Tralee enjoyed the better of the first half, leading 1-10 to 1-9 at half-time thanks to Eamonn Brosnan’s 1-5 and Mark Deegan’s 0-3, Kerry cranked up the pressure in the second half but they left it late to make a winning move. Tied four times in the second half, with 10 minutes left it was 1-14 apiece but Brick (0-4) and Kerry goal-scorer Darragh O’Connell (0-2) helped Kerry to set-up a quarter-final against Cork next weekend.
