Resignation of Munster Council Secretary

Monday 21 January 2008

It is with regret that Munster Council GAA received the resignation of the current Munster Council Secretary, Simon Moroney, last night (Thursday, January 17th). The resignation is to take effect in late June 2008. Mr. Moroney has been employed as Council Secretary for the past four years under a secondment arrangement with his employer, Clare County Council. Mr. Moroney is resuming his employment with the local authority in Clare following four years at the helm in Munster.

The reason for his resignation is that his proposal for the creation of an adequate staffing structure for the council, which he outlined in his report to last year’s Annual Convention, and supported by the other Council Officers to meet the increased workload of the Council Rúnaí arising from statutory, but very necessary and welcome, membership by the Rúnaí of national Committees (CCC, NISC, Insurance Workgroup etc.) over the past two years and the introduction of modern work methods in Council HQ was not accepted by the Council at last year’s Annual Convention or at a subsequent Council meeting early last year. Other similar sized councils have this staffing structure in place.

The Council was very complimentary last night on the manner in which Mr. Moroney efficiently discharged his duties as Council Rúnaí during his term. The Council will advertise early next week for a replacement Secretary. The council also decided last night to recruit a Deputy Secretary this year. The Council Treasurer, Mr. Ger Hickey, and PRO, Mr. Willie O’Connor, also end their three-year terms as Council officers at Annual Convention to be held in Clare next month.
