Allianz HL D1B: 14-man Limerick defeat Offaly

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B

Report By Jackie Cahill for

DESPITE a 2-11 haul from Shane Dooley, Offaly remain pointless in Division 1B of the Allianz Hurling League, having lost for the third successive game this season.

Dooley had 1-9 posted by half-time and Limerick’s task was made even more difficult when John Fitzgibbon was red-carded approaching half-time.

Offaly, as they have done in recent seasons, made life difficult for Limerick again but the hosts still managed to keep their slim promotion hopes alive with a second win on the spin at the Gaelic Grounds.

Offaly bagged two goals in a minute during the second half – Dooley and Oisín Kelly on target – but Limerick hit seven of the remaining nine points on offer. Offaly had the numerical advantage from the 33rd minute but they couldn’t make it count.

Fitzgibbon’s dismissal – for a wild overhead pull on Conor Doughan – had Limerick on the back foot approaching the break. Having played against the breeze in the opening half, Limerick trailed by 0-14 to 1-13 at the break, despite hitting the first six points of the game.

Offaly responded with four Dooley frees to settle and they were level at 1-9 to 0-12 when the Tullamore hitman netted in the 27th minute.

Dooley saw his initial 20m free blocked but after Limerick failed to clear and the ball was recycled across the face of goal, the prolific forward found the net from close range.

Doughan’s point handed Offaly the lead for the first time, before Dooley and Cillian Kiely added further points.

Another Dooley free stretched Offaly’s lead to four but Limerick remained in touch with points from their leading scorer Ronan Lynch (free) and Gearoid Hegarty in first half stoppage time.

Andrew La Touche Cosgrave netted early in the second half to provide Limerick with a tonic but they had to recover from the concession of goals to Dooley and Kelly in the 50th and 51st minutes before sealing a merited win.

Allianz Hurling League Division 1B – Wexford 3-18 Kerry 0-12

Wexford defeated Kerry by 3-18 to 0-12 in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1B on Sunday March 5th in Innovate Wexford Park.

Guiney makes scoring return as Wexford maintain winning ways in 1B

Report by Brendan Furlong for

Wexford maintained their one hundred per cent record when an improved second half showing inspired them to a comfortable fifteen point victory over Kerry at Innovate Wexford Park.

Before an attendance of 2600 the Yellow Bellies made it three wins from three in Allianz Hurling League Division 1B. Perhaps the biggest cheer of the afternoon was reserved for Jack Guiney who marked his forty-seventh minute introduction with a goal and a point in his first competitive inter-county outing for two years.

While the striking aspect of the first half was the battling qualities display by Kerry, it will also be remembered for the four clear-cut goal opportunities missed by Wexford with David Redmond, Lee Chin and Harry Kehoe being the real culprits.

Kerry got the best possible start leading 0-04 to 0-03 after twelve minutes as Bryan Murphy, John Buckley and Padraig Boyle all found the target, with Lee Chin and a Conor McDonald free keeping the homeside in touch.

Wexford were winning lots of possession, spraying the ball around with purpose and accuracy, but their finishing was not going according to plan, despite further points from Chin, McDonald and Morris.

Kerry turned in a fine finish to the half with three unanswered points through Paudie O’Connor, two, and Jordan Conway, to go in level 0-07 each at the interval.

Wexford began the second half with a brace of points through McDonald and Chin, before misfortune struck for Kerry, on forty-one minutes, when Harry Kehoe intercepted a short clearance to punish with a goal.

One minute later Diarmuid O’Keeffe after his initial point attempt came back high off the upright followed up to find the net from a David Redmond pass, leaving his side leading 2-9 to 0-7.

Wexford having turned the game around in their favour were never going to relinquish their lead for the continued to dominate right through the pitch.

After Colum Harty had Kerry’s first second half point on forty-five minutes, Wexford went on to bully their opponents, picking off a string of unanswered points, as Lee Chin dominated up front.

Guiney marked his introduction with a trademark fifty-sixth minute goal, collecting a cross-field ball, before shaking off his marker to shoot low to the net. While Kerry tried hard it was Wexford who powered on to a comfortable victory.

Scorers for Wexford: Diarmuid O’Keeffe, Harry Kehoe, Jack Guiney 1-1 each; Conor McDonald 0-6 (5f), Lee Chin 0-4 (1f), Damien Reck, Matthew O’Hanlon, Paul Morris, Willie Devereux, Eanna Martin 0-1 each.

Scorers for Kerry: Colum Harty, John Buckley, Paudie O’Connor 0-2 each; Bryan Murphy, Jack Goulding, Daniel Collins, Jordan Conway, Padraig Boyle (f), Brendan O’Leary 0-1 each.

Allianz FL D2: Clare triumph in Ennis

Allianz Football League Division 2

CLARE 2-11 CORK 0-9

Report By Peter O’Connell for

Played in front of an attendance of 985 at Cusack Park the Clare footballers scored a first League win over Cork in 23 years.

In a match played in driving rain, wind and occasional sunshine, Clare played exceptionally well in the second half to record their second win of the season. One of the key moments was when Donal Og Hodnett’s goal was disallowed, 21 minutes into the second half. That came just after Joe Hayes made a superb save from Colm O’Neill. Hodnett put away the rebound but having consulted with his umpires, referee Niall Ward deemed that the Cork player was in the square.

Although Cork dominated possession in the opening 20 minutes the teams were tied at half-time. Points from Aidan Walsh, a Luke Connolly 45 and centre back James Loughrey, left Cork leading 0-3 to 0-0 after 21 minutes. While Cork had the vast majority of the possession they found it very difficult to penetrate a Clare defence, which regularly had 13 players behind the ball.

Yet while Clare were defending in a disciplined manner, they showed very little threat in attack until wing forward Cian O’Dea goaled from close range 10 minutes before half time. Midfielder Ciaran Russell made an incisive run up the left wing before laying off to Keelan Sexton, who squared for O’Dea. Suddenly, despite Cork’s dominance of possession, the game was now tied.

Clare should have goaled again a minute later when Shane Brennan found Jamie Malone alone in front of goal. Malone pulled on hit but his shot was taken off the line by Cork full back Tom Clancy.

Earlier, Clare midfielder Cathal O’Connor’s delivery, from inside his own half, had to be deflected for a 45 by Cork goalkeeper Ryan Price. While Cork virtually owned the ball, Clare managed to created three first half goal opportunities. Points from wing back Tomás Clancy and a Niall Coakley free, left the teams level at the interval, following a brace of Eoin Cleary points for the home county.

Clare started the second half with points from Shane Brennan, David Tubridy and a superb Cathal O’Connor effort, leaving them 1-5 to 0-5 ahead.

While Niall Coakley and Colm O’Neill replied for Cork, Jamie Malone, Tubridy and Ciaran Russell did likewise for the winners. However Jamie Malone’s goal, four minutes from time, sealed an exceptional result for Colm Collins’ team. Cork meanwhile were left reflecting on a very poor second half display which included a Colm O’Neill penalty hitting the post in second half injury time.

Scorers for Clare: Jamie Malone 1-1, David Tubridy 0-4 (2fs), Cian O’Dea 1-0, Eoin Cleary 0-3 (1f, 145), Shane Brennan, Cathal O’Connor, Ciaran Russell 0-1 each.

Scorers for Cork: Niall Coakley 0-2 (2fs), Colm O’Neill, Tomas Clancy, James Loughrey, Aidan Walsh, Michael Shields, Paul Kerrigan, and Luke Connolly (45) 0-1 each.

Allianz Football League Division 4 – Westmeath 3-13 Waterford 2-11

Westmeath defeated Waterford by 3-13 to 2-11 in Round 4 of the Allianz Football League Division 4 on Sunday March 5th at Ardmore.

Martin ramps up Westmeath promotion bid

Westmeath 3-13 Waterford 2-11

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Westmeath extended their unbeaten League run at Ardmore as Kieran Martin’s brace fired them to their third straight win. The visitors made the most of the high winds to lead by 11 at halfway. Martin’s second goal wrapped up the points for the promotion chasers.

“With the conditions, to play that well and create so many chances, we’re very happy,” said Westmeath boss Tom Cribbin. “We’re not playing at our best but we’re starting to get momentum.”

Cribbin is targeting a top two finish after sliding down from the heights of Division 1 in 2014. “We had a lot of injuries and luckily this year we’ve been blessed that way,” he said. “Our panel is stronger this year.” Waterford slipped three points behind the Lake Men, and promotion is now a distant hope.

Westmeath engineered six first-half goal chances, denied by a series of goal-line blocks before Martin netted on 22 minutes following an end to end move.

Joey Veale registered the Deise’s solitary first half point as they trailed 1-9 to 0-1 at the break. Martin netted a second on 44 minutes. Veale punched in a consolation. Ger Egan lashed a penalty over the bar before Thomas O’Gorman carried the ball over his own line in an attempt to deny Cormac Boyle. Darren Quinn misjudged Gavin Crotty’s wind assisted attempt in the sixth added minute as the ball landed in the Westmeath net.

Scorers – Westmeath: K Martin 2-1, J Heslin 0-6 (4fs), T O’Gorman OG 1-0, P Sharry (3 ’45s’), G Egan (1f, 1 pen) 0-3 each.

Sheehan helps Limerick stop the rot

Limerick 1-13 London 0-12

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Cian Sheehan’s goal propelled Limerick to a much-needed victory at the University of Limerick’s 4G pitch after opening their campaign with three successive defeats. Limerick led by 0-6 to 0-2 as half-time approached but three scores on the bounce by Mark Gottsche, Rory Mason and Luke Gavaghan left the bare minimum between the sides at the break. Excellent points from James Naughton and Sean O’Dea widened the gap on the resumption, and Sheehan’s goal put them in complete control.

London fought back to get back to within two points but Limerick finished the game strongly and two Ger Collins points late on secured their first competitive victory of 2017. “Relieved isn’t a word I like to use too much,” said Limerick manager Billy Lee. “I am happy: happy with the performance and happy with the attitude. It’s enjoyable to get the first win. We played some nice football in patches but there are still some things for us to do but that will come in time.”

Allianz Football League Division 1 – Kerry 1-19 Roscommon 1-13

Kerry defeated Roscommon by 1-19 to 1-13 in Round 4 of the Allianz Football League Division 1 on Sunday March 5th at Dr. Hyde Park.

Allianz FL D1: Kerry finish strongly

Allianz Football League Division 1

Report By Declan Rooney for

Paul Geaney fired an added-time goal to end Roscommon hopes of a first win of the Division 1 campaign as Kerry earned a deserved win at Dr Hyde Park.

Ciarain Murtagh’s 67th minute penalty had cut Kerry’s lead to just a point, but Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side finished out the game in style with James O’Donoghue and Stephen O’Brien points either side of Geaney’s goal.

Kerry were the better side throughout and deserved their second win of the spring, and a bright second-half from O’Donoghue will please the Kingdom’s management.

But it was Paul Geaney that set them on the road to victory with six first-half points, while Roscommon finished the game with 14 men after John McManus’ red card 12 minutes from the end.

It was a brave comeback from Roscommon as Diarmuid Murtagh made a big impact after his half-time introduction, while Tadhg O’Rourke also impressed at midfield for Kevin McStay’s side. But ultimately they lacked a small bit of composure in the first-half especially when they conceded six points in an 11-minute spell with just one in return.

After a difficult start to their league campaign the last thing Roscommon ended was an in-form Jame O’Donoghue to show up in Hyde Park, but it was his full-forward line partner Paul Geaney who got his side off to a bright start with two points in the opening three minutes.

Despite the slow start, McStay would have been delighted to see his side level by the sixth minute after Fintan Cregg’s point off his left and Cian Connolly’s fisted effort.

Both sides experienced decent periods of dominance and three points in a row from Kerry in two minutes – two from Geaney and a third from Keane – saw them into a decent lead.

This was a spirited display from Roscommon and after Donie Smith added two close range frees, Connolly made it 0-5 each with a great score on the turn.

But between the 19th and 30th minutes Kerry upped reeled off a series of good points. With Jack Savage getting off the mark, Geaney, Paul Murphy and David Moran also found the target.

The only Roscommon score in that spell came from Darren O’Malley from a long range free, which was earned after a clash between Donnchadh Walsh and Enda Smith, and the Kerry man was black carded in the incident.

Ciarain Murtagh cut Kerry’s lead to four two minutes from the interval, but Kerry took a 0-12 to 0-7 lead into half-time when skipper Peter Crowley crept in for a good point.

Savage added his second point shortly after the restart to stretch Kerry’s advantage and on a few occasions they led by six points in the second-half. O’Donoghue reeled off three points in a row midway though the half, and despite McManus’ red card Roscommon rallied.

Diarmuid Murtagh pointed two frees after his brother Ciarain also found the target, and when Tadhg Morley was deemed to have fouled Enda Smith, the captain’s penalty put just a point between the sides.

But in the end Geaney was cool under pressure and his goal brought the comeback to an abrupt end.

Scorers for Kerry: Paul Geaney 1-6 (4fs), James O’Donoghue 0-4 (1f), Jack Savage 0-2, Barry John Keane 0-2, Shane Enright 0-1, Peter Crowley 0-1, Paul Murphy 0-1, David Moran 0-1, Stephen O’Brien 0-1.

Kerry forced to dig deep to overcome Roscommon

Roscommon 1-13 Kerry 1-19

Report by Brendan O’Brien from the Irish Examiner newspaper

Kerry were made to dig deep to secure a league win that eases relegation fears back home in the Kingdom and one that leaves Roscommon looking anxiously at the growing prospect of Division Two football next spring
Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s side led by five points with just over ten minutes of normal time to play on Sunday afternoon against an opponent that had just lost a man to a sending-off but the deficit was reduced to the bare minimum before the visitors pulled away again.

A lack of rainfall, a manageable wind and the new surface laid at the Hyde over the off-season laid the foundations for a decent afternoon’s entertainment and the two sides obliged with a lack of sweepers and a frequent commitment to play the long ball from the keepers.

Kerry played the first period with that wind at their backs and it was probably worth a handful of points on the day. As it was, the visitors led by five at the interval with full-forward Paul Geaney accounting for half of their dozen white flags.

Two of his came from play in tn opening period when Kerry lost Donnchadh Walsh to a black card after 25 minutes due to an apparent body check on the onrushing Enda Smith. It may have been an obstruction borne of earlier events.

Roscommon came within a sniff of goal at least three times in the first-half, all on the back of penetrative runs at the heart of the visiting defence, with Brendan Kealy having to deflect away a Cian Connolly effort as early as the sixth minute.

Yet it was Kerry with the more reliable supply chain and that was down to no-one more than David Moran who made a number of marks in the midfield and generally provided the sort of base on which those around him could launch forward. He was superb all day.

Up by five at the break. Kerry continued to lean on Moran and Geaney with the latter turning from poacher to supplier for points from Jack Savage and James O’Donoghue and, by the turn into the third quarter, Roscommon had made no inroads into the half-time deficit.

The likelihood of the hosts turning the tables down the home straight lengthened with over a dozen minutes still to play when defender John McManus was shown red for a light slap across James O’Donoghue’s face after the award of a free to the Connacht side.

Instead, Roscommon pushed harder against a Kerry outfit that has made a habit of fading out of games in the last quarter and a goal from a Diarmuid Murtagh penalty with two minutes of normal time to go squeezed the gap to just one point.

The chance was earned thanks to a foul on Enda Smith that may or may not have been inside the area but Paul Geaney struck for an injury-time goal to make certain of the win and ensure that the post-match talk wouldn’t be defined by one refereeing decision.

The visitors played into the dressing-room end in the first half and appeared to have the swirling breeze behind them, but Kilkenny were 0-3 to 0-1 up on five minutes, talisman TJ Reid operating close to the Cork goal and Richie Hogan coming outfield.

The men in red pulled Seamus Harnedy outfield and kept Conor Lehane and Alan Cadogan in a two man full forward line, and the latter tied the game up on ten minutes, 0-4 each.

Reid and Lehane swapped scores, with Kilkenny nudging one ahead on twenty minutes. The Cats’ efficiency pushed them three ahead as half-time approached – they had two wides to Cork’s six in those 35 minutes – but Lehane’s accuracy from placed balls cut that to one at the break, 0-11 to 0-10.

The nip and tuck continued on the resumption until Kilkenny cut loose – Conor Martin, Reid, Hogan (two) and Walter Walsh (two) pushed Kilkenny six ahead on 48 minutes: Cork’s three wides in a row in response looked fatal, and the visitors needed Anthony Nash to make a terrific save from Colin Fennelly.

However, when Cormac Murphy got a straight red with ten minutes left it removed any chance Cork had, and Kilkenny had plenty to spare at the finish.

Scorers for Kilkenny: TJ Reid (5 frees, 0-7); R. Hogan (0-5); W. Walsh, R. Leahy (0-3 each); E. Murphy (frees, 0-2); C. Buckley, C. Martin (0-1 each).

Tipperary defeated Clare by 0-28 to 0-21 in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Sunday March 5th at Semple Stadium Thurles.

10 points from John McGrath help Tipperary to victory over Clare

Tipperary 0-28 Clare 0-21

Report from John Fogarty of the Irish Examiner newspaper

John McGrath was in impeccable form as All-Ireland champions Tipperary continued their 100% Division 1A in front of a 7,254 Thurles attendance.

McGrath helped himself to 10 points, five from play, while older brother Noel and Steven O’Brien added three and John O’Dwyer five in a well-earned victory over Clare who made it competitive until the closing stages.

With substitute Ian Galvin making his presence felt, Clare were within a goal with five minutes of normal time remaining but Tipperary turned the screw in the closing stages. O’Dwyer sent over two points in the space of a minute followed by John McGrath and Paul Flynn scores.

Tipperary were 0-5 to no score up by the seventh minute, former footballer O’Brien and John McGrath each helping themselves to a brace. McGrath’s first was a splendid example of stickwork, controlling the ball on the stick and splitting the posts from distance.

Against the wind, the score was all the better but Clare worked their way into the game and had narrowed the gap to two points by the 21st minute when John Conlon sent over his second of four first-half points.

Tipperary went 12 minutes without scoring between a third McGrath point from play and Niall O’Meara’s 34th minute score. In that time Clare went ahead, sending over six points without reply as Conlon continued to dominate down the left wing, which was confirmed by the replacement of Seamus Kennedy before the break. A John McGrath free in additional time cut the margin to one, 0-11 to 0-10.

Allianz HL D1: Waterford overcome plucky Dubs

Allianz Hurling League Division 1A

Report By Paul Keane for

Waterford’s Croke Park losing streak is finally over after a Stephen Bennett inspired Allianz hurling league win at the venue, their first in competitive fare since 2008.

Full-forward Bennett helped himself to 2-2, including goals at the start of both halves, as Derek McGrath’s men finally came good at the Jones Road venue.

Free-taker Pauric Mahony, with 0-12, was excellent for the 2015 league champions too who hadn’t won at the venue since beating Tipperary in the 2008 All-Ireland semi-finals.

Derek McGrath’s side are in a strong position now for a knock-out place with two games to go in the group though were disappointed to lose wing-back Stephen Daniels to a red card late on for two bookable offences.

Donal Burke, a minor last year, scored 1-7 for Dublin but their young side slipped to a second loss in three games and are battling relegation.

Waterford got the best possible start with 1-1 inside the opening six minutes to open up a four-point advantage. It was all going to plan for the favourites with Mahony pointing and Bennett shooting a clever goal.

Bennett was first to react for the goal when he swept the ball home after Mahony’s point attempt cannoned down off the post. Dublin have turned Parnell Park into a fortress of late and it looked as if they might once again come unstuck at nearby GAA headquarters.

But five points on the trot was a sign of their resolve with Burke and Dillon contributing a brace of scores each. Eamonn Dillon, wearing number 14 but starting at centre-forward, used his pace to trouble Waterford while Burke, with 0-11 from his two previous games, started brightly.

The Na Fianna teenager poked a 20th minute goal home among a group of players following a long ball in from Chris Crummey and Dublin suddenly led by five, 1-07 to 1-02. The remainder of the half was all Waterford’s though and Derek McGrath’s men outscored Dublin by six points to three in the run up to half-time.

Kevin Moran displayed his captain’s credentials with back to back long range points and Hurler of the Year Austin Gleeson intercepted a puck-out before splitting the posts. Dillon did win a free after a trademark solo run which Burke converted on the stroke of half-time, taking his tally to 1-4, but Dublin led narrowly now, 1-10 to 1-8.

Bennett’s second goal after the restart, when he beat Dublin ‘keeper Conor Dooley to a loose ball, put Waterford into the lead and they held onto it from there.

In truth, it was a much improved Waterford in the second-half and they powered past Dublin with some excellent play. Bennett added two points to his goals and Mahony continued to convert from placed balls as Dublin slipped further behind. Maurice Shanahan was introduced for the back to back league finalists and nailed a fine point too.

Scorers for Waterford: Pauric Mahony 0-12 (0-10f), Stephen Bennett 2-2, Kevin Moran 0-2, Austin Gleeson 0-2, Maurice Shanahan 0-1.

Scorers for Dublin: Donal Burke 1-7 (0-7f), Eamonn Dillon 0-4, Ryan O’Dwyer 0-2, Rian McBride 0-2, Chris Crummey 0-1, Niall McMorrow 0-1.

WATERFORD: Ian O’Regan; Noel Connors, Barry Coughlan, Shane Fives; Conor Gleeson, Tadhg de Burca, Stephen Daniels; Jamie Barron, Kevin Moran; Michael Walsh, Shane Bennett, Pauric Mahony; Austin Gleeson, Stephen Bennett, Patrick Curran
Subs: Maurice Shanahan for Curran (49), Mikey Kearney for Barron (50), Brian O’Halloran for Shane Bennett (61), Jake Dillon for Stephen Bennett (67), Darragh Lyons for C Gleeson (68).

DUBLIN: Conor Dooley; James Madden, Eoghan O’Donnell, Shane Barrett; Ben Quinn, Liam Rushe, Chris Crummey; Niall McMorrow, Caolan Conway; Rian McBride, Eamonn Dillon, Eoghan Conroy; Donal Burke, Ryan O’Dwyer, Fionntan MacGib
Subs: Cian Boland for Conway (47), Cian MacGabhann for Madden (55), Chris Bennett for Conroy (61), Cian O’Sullivan for Quinn (69), Fionn O Riain Broin for Barrett (72).
