May 18, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 9:30 pm

Celtic Challenge 18th May 2016 (Group A)
South Tipperary 4-21 Waterford City 0-10
After receiving a bye in the second round of the Celtic Challenge Under 17 hurling competition, South Tipperary got back to competitive action in Golden on Wednesday 18th May with a victory over Waterford City.

With three personnel changes to the team that started against Carlow in the previous game, South Tipperary were quick out of the blocks and led by 1-2 to 0-1 after eight minutes with the goal coming from Niall Hoctor. Further Tipperary points from Hoctor and Cathal Bourke either side of a Niall Dunphy free for Waterford city followed as did a point from South Tipperary corner forward Ross Bonner on receipt of a great long distance pass from corner back Eoin McCormack. Bourke for South Tipperary and Dunphy for Waterford city traded points until the game swung in South Tipperary’s favour in the eighteenth and nineteenth minutes with two goals from Hoctor and Conal Donovan and a point from Eoghan Brett.

Waterford City responded with a free from Dunphy and a well taken point from Brian Cooke which were cancelled out by points by Hoctor and Bourke. Johnny Flynn scored a point for the visitors which was added to by another Dunphy free but from then until the end of the first half South Tipperary tacked on three further points from Bourke (2) and Hoctor to leave the half time score South Tipperary 3-12 to Waterford City 0-7.

South Tipperary opened the second half with three unanswered points from Brett, Bourke and Hoctor which were followed by a goal from Josh Macken. The game was now effectively over as a contest and both management teams availed of the opportunity to make interchanges (substitutes). Waterford City concluded the game with points from Dunphy and Mikey Mulcahy whereas South Tipperary had points from Hoctor, Fergus Halligan, Brett and Bonner.

For South Tipperary this was a progression from the first round performance. Newcomers Killian Hayde, Eoin McCormack and the very impressive Niall Hoctor all played well as did Fiachra Scott, Paul O Heney, Andy Byrnes, Conal Donovan and Cathal Bourke. Whereas many plaudits may be laid at the feet of an improving forward division this result was ground out by the meticulous work of a determined defensive unit all of whom had their moments. For Waterford City, Luke O Brien, Brian Cooke and Niall Dunphy played well.

Paul O’Heney was nominated by the referee (Ritchie Byrne, Kilkenny) and his officials as South Tipperary’s “Best and Fairest” award winner. This accolade is bestowed upon the player on each team who is judged to have best reflected the following principles during the course of the game:
• Displayed a high level of skill and endeavour
• Displayed respect towards Match Official
• Displayed respect towards his fellow Players
• Displayed respect towards the Playing Rules

South Tipperary’s next game is against South Wexford on Wednesday 25th May at 7.30pm in New Ross.
