Allianz Hurling League Division 1A – Waterford 1-18 Tipperary 1-17

Waterford defeated Tipperary by 1-18 to 1-17 in Round 3 of the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A on Sunday March 6th at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Derek McGrath’s Waterford claimed a tenth successive Allianz Hurling League victory this afternoon as Austin Gleeson banged over a brilliant winner to deny Tipperary in the fourth minute of stoppage time at Semple Stadium. Waterford’s run stretches back to last year’s campaign and they made it three from three in Division IA this year with a come from behind win.

Trailing by five points early in the second half, Waterford hit 1-4 without reply, including Tom Devine’s 59th minute goal, to turn the game on its head. But Tipp looked to have won it when John McGrath netted two minutes from time – before Waterford staged a late revival.

McGrath’s goal handed Tipp a 1-17 to 1-16 advantage in front of 6540 spectators in Thurles but after Patrick Curran converted his ninth point of the game, and seventh free, to level matters, Gleeson bombed over the winner from 100 metres.

Tipp, like they did against Kilkenny at Nowlan Park, lost a game down the home straight from a winning position and they missed goal chances again here. Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher was denied by Waterford goalkeeper Stephen O’Keeffe in the first half and with 12 minutes left, a minute before Devine’s goal, Niall O’Meara went desperately close.

This was a tough one for Tipp to take as they led by 0-12 to 0-8 at half-time, and by 0-14 to 0-9 early in the second half. But League champions Waterford gained a stranglehold around the middle third and turned the screw. John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer finished as Tipp’s leading scorer on the day with 0-11, including nine frees, but he was fortunate to escape with just a yellow card in the 20th minute after a wild pull across Jake Dillon’s shins.

Ahead of the Tipperary Allianz Hurling League Roinn 1A round 3 fixture against Waterford in Semple Stadium at 3pm next Sunday, March 6th, Tipperary manager Michael Ryan has made 3 changes to his side looking for a second home win in this year’s league. As anticipated Seamus Callanan from Drom & Inch returns to his customary full forward berth on his seasonal debut while Barry Heffernan from Nenagh Éire Óg makes his league debut at right half back. Tipperary SH Update Ahead of Waterford game

Following the short break in the league the Tipperary Senior Hurling panel are now looking forward to the Allianz League Round 3 fixture against Waterford in Semple Stadium on Sunday next, March 6th at 3pm. Waterford, currently top of the table on maximum points with 2 wins out of 2, are going to provide an excellent challenge for Tipperary against the current League holders.

After a busy schedule for our players, competing in the Fitzgibbon Cup competition last weekend and their own normal training schedule, Tipperary management have injury concerns which will impact on the availability of the following players; Jason Forde picked up a hamstring injury playing for UL last weekend while James Barry has picked up a foot injury and are both ruled out for this weekend.

These setbacks, however, are offset by having Seamus Callanan and Kieran Bergin available for selection once again which the Tipperary management are pleased with.

Due to the impending adverse weather forecast Semple Stadium management committee have decided in advance, rather than leaving it to the last minute, that the Semple Stadium pitch would not be able to hold both fixtures on Sunday next as originally programmed.

As a result the Allianz Football League Roinn 3 fixture between Tipperary and Offaly has been moved to Sean Treacy Park, Tipperary Town with a 12.30pm throw in on Sunday next, March 6th.

The Allianz League Roinn 1A Senior Hurling fixture between Tipperary and Waterford will go ahead as planned in Semple Stadium but has been moved back to the later time of 3pm to facilitate patrons who may wish to attend both matches.

Both stands will be open in Semple Stadium and due to different price structure at both venues, as indicated patrons attending the football fixture in Tipperary Town who may wish to attend the hurling fixture also will receive a concessionary ticket to allow them pay a reduced admission price in Semple Stadium.

The Match day programme will be the same for both fixtures.
