A masterful display from Conor Lehane ensured that Cork earned the All-Ireland SHC Round I Qualifier spoils and dumped Wexford out of the championship in a convincing fashion at Innovate Wexford Park. Lehane was brilliant throughout and finished with 1-6 from play.
This game looked over at the end of the first half when the Rebels racked up a 14-point advantage.

Awestruck supporters packed like sardines in the stands watched on when Anthony Nash’s puck-out from the Clonard End goal was fired in like an bomb after five minutes. Lehane plucked the ball as it flew at the opposite end and finished a neat shot off his right to leave Wexford reeling.

At this stage the visitors led by 1-3 to 0-1. Lehane (2) and Pa Horgan obliged to extend their lead and even when Wexford’s sole scorer for the first 26 minutes, Ian Byrne, landed a brace of frees, Cork fired back with a string of four points, putting Jimmy Barry-Murphy’s men ahead by 1-10 to 0-3 on 19 minutes.

Seamus Harnedy, who also impressed before a hamstring injury forced him off in the second half, scrambled the ball to the net after he was aided by Conor Lehane. A brace from Brian Lawton and another point from Lehane rounded off a rout of a first-half that had Cork leading by 2-16 to 0-9.

In fairness to Wexford in front of their enthusiastic home support, they didn’t lie down. Their purple-patch forced Cork to endure a 21-minute scoring-drought, during which Wexford carved their deficit back to six points.

However, leadership from Andrew Shore and Lee Chin was not enough for the hosts as they could never break past Cork’s full-back line and score the goal they needed. Conor Lehane closed the game with a pair of points as the Midelton clubman led Cork’s crusade for victory.
