All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 1B – Tyrone 1-14 Limerick 0-8

Tyrone defeated Limerick by 1-14 to 0-8 in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 1B on Sunday June 28th at Healy Park Omagh.

SFC 1B: Tyrone do enough to beat Limerick

By Orla Bannon at Healy Park for GAA.ie

Tyrone came good in the second half of a poor first round All-Ireland SFC qualifier in Limerick with a ten-point win which flattered the home team in Healy Park.

Peter Harte’s fisted goal in injury-time gave the Red Hands a bigger margin of victory than they deserved, with Limerick in this game for the first 50 minutes.

Limerick danger-man Ian Ryan missed some free-kicks which dented the unfancied visitors’ hopes of staying in this game as long as possible, and Tyrone finished strongly, outscoring their opponents by 1-8 to 0-4 in the second half. Conor McAliskey top-scored with six points in Healy Park as Tyrone struggled to shake off the cobwebs after a six-week lay-off and they only led by 0-6 to 0-4 at half time.

Limerick battled hard in the first half but lost Cillian Fahy and Darragh Treacy to black cards. The Red Hands scored the opening three points after 11 minutes. Mattie Donnelly stroked over a long-range opening minute point while Sean Cavanagh (free) and a Conor McAliskey point put the home side seemingly in control.

McAliskey was involved at both ends of the field, drilling a shot wide of the near post and then making a superb interception at the other end after his marker, cornerback Robert Browne, made a run in behind the Tyrone defence and threatened to score a goal of his own.
Midfielder Gearoid Hegarty scored Limerick’s first point after 15 minutes but by that stage, the visitors suffered their first black card dismissal after Cillian Fahy was sent off after six minutes. Darragh Treacy also got a black card before half time.

Tyrone had a goal disallowed in the 17th minute when over-elaboration led to Cathal McCarron being blown for a square ball. Peter Harte made a strong run through the middle and laid the ball off to McAliskey. He lobbed it back across to McCarron who was already in the square.

McAliskey’s free put Tyrone 0-4 to 0-1 ahead in the 21st minute. Limerick dangerman Ian Ryan scored his first from a tight angle and Browne’s free brought the visitors back to within a point. Darren McCurry nailed a free before being substituted and although Limerick goalkeeper Brian Scanlon used the wind to nail a ’45’, McAliskey chipped over a nice point on the run to make it 0-6 to 0-4 at the interval.

Tyrone made a couple of switches at half time with Mattie Donnelly moving to full-forward as the rain began to pour down. McAliskey’s free was quickly cancelled out by Cian Sheehan’s point before a classy point from Ronan O’Neill put Tyrone three points up. Tyrone’s half-forward line malfunctioned in the first half but suddenly a few scores came from this sector, with Tiernan McCann following O’Neill in raising a white flag. Sub Mark Bradley scored from a tight angle and Tyrone were 0-10 to 0-5 ahead having scored four of the first five points in the second period by the 45th minute.

Ian Ryan missed a free that Limerick badly needed to get back in the game. They almost grabbed a goal when another Ryan free came off the upright, but Gearoid Hegarty’s fisted effort hit the side netting. Sean Cavanagh landed the best point of the day four minutes from the end to book Tyrone’s place in tomorrow morning’s draw.

Munster MHC: Tipperary honour Doyle memory

Electric Ireland Munster MHC Semi-Final: Tipperary 1-15 Clare 1-11

By Jackie Cahill at Semple Stadium, Thurles for GAA.ie

On the day the late Jimmy Doyle was laid to rest, the minor hurlers of Tipperary honoured his memory with a four-point victory over Clare in this evening’s Electric Ireland Munster minor hurling semi-final.

The Premier County held off a spirited second half fightback from Clare to book a final meeting with Limerick or Cork at Semple Stadium on July 12.

Tipp were ten points clear in the second half but the visitors came roaring back to cut the deficit to just three points late on, Martin Daly’s goal helping them along the way.

But Tipp had enough of a platform built up to squeeze through to a first provincial decider in this grade since 2012. The scoring contributions of goalscorer Tommy Nolan, Lyndon Fairbrother and David Gleeson were crucial on the night for Tipp, who led by 1-8 to 0-4 at half-time.

But Clare, with senior team manager Davy Fitzgerald’s son Colm in their ranks, hit 12 wides on the night, including eight in the first half as they bowed out. Tipp also lost the services of captain and dual star Stephen Quirke to a knee injury, with the Moyle Rovers star stretchered off in the 18th minute.
Scorers for Tipperary: T Nolan 1-1, L Fairbrother 0-5 (4f), D Gleeson 0-4, D Carey 0-2, A Tynan, G Ryan & M Connors 0-1 each.

Scorers for Clare: A Shanagher 0-5 (4f, 1 65), M Daly 1-0, C Fitzgerald (1f, 1 sl), J Cunningham & A Kennedy 0-2 each.

Comhairle na Mumhan extends its sympathy to the Doyle family and all Jimmy’s relatives and friends, his club, Thurles Sarsfields, and Tipperary GAA at this sad time. Munster Council Chairman Robert Frost paid the following tribute: “Jimmy Doyle was one of hurling’s greatest ever players. Munster SHC Semi-Final – Tipperary 4-23 Limerick 1-16

Tipperary defeated Limerick by 4-23 to 1-16 in the Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final on Sunday June 21st at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

Munster SHC: Tipperary finally shake off Limerick

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Semi-Final: Limerick 1-16 Tipperary 4-23

By Brian Murphy at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick

For two years under Eamon O’Shea, Tipperary couldn’t buy a win in the Munster Championship. At the Gaelic Grounds on Sunday, they made it look easy, picking Limerick apart with a measured and classy performance to claim their place in the Munster final against Waterford on July 12, the venue for which will be decided on Tuesday.

Two years in-a-row, Tipperary have lost Munster semi-finals to Limerick – games they should have seen out before collapsing in the closing stages. Here, they didn’t make the same mistake the third time around, with Séamus Callanan and John O’Dwyer hitting 2-5 and 0-7 respectively in a very impressive win.

Limerick enjoyed little spells of dominance either side of the break – they led by 0-3 to 0-0 after eight minutes and then pegged Tipp back to within a point in the 45th minute – but Tipperary’s class was there for all to see, while Limerick had little to offer when their opponents had absorbed all their blood and thunder and still came at them relentlessly.

Callanan came out on top in his battle with Limerick full-back Richie McCarthy and hit quality goals on nine and 22 minutes to give the Premier County a 2-12 to 0-12 half-time lead, O’Shea’s side having played against the wind in the first half. Limerick rallied and had the gap back to two points when Shane Dowling smashed home a 40th minute penalty. However, Tipp counter-punched brilliantly, and a Jason Forde goal put them back in the ascendancy before Michael Breen rounded off the win with a fourth in added time.

It was all the more impressive because Tipperary started without Cathal Barrett, Noel McGrath and Lar Corbett, three key players last year, while Michael Cahill and Gearóid Ryan were named on the bench. Limerick made just one change from their quarter-final win over Clare, with the fit-again David Breen starting at wing-forward ahead of Paul Browne.

Tipperary won the toss and opted to play into the wind. Limerick started with real purpose and were three points up by the eighth minute, Declan Hannon (2) and Shane Dowling nailing superb points from play. Cian Lynch, the star of the Shannonsiders’ quarter-final win over Clare, was being closely tracked by Paddy Stapleton, but the Tipperary defender was yellow carded early on for taking his man-marking role a little too literally.

All eyes were on the heavyweight battle between McCarthy and Callanan from the off, and it was the Limerick full-back who had the better start, beating his man to the first few balls and doing his job of protecting the ‘D’ expertly. Callanan, however, proved why he is the deadliest finisher in the game when, nine minutes in, he took a pass from O’Dwyer, sold McCarthy a dummy, and drove a shot past Limerick goalkeeper Barry Hennessy.

Tipperary had been sent out with clear instructions to go for goals, and to go for them early and often. Forde hit the side netting with another very good chance, before Callanan sent over the resultant 65, the first of a sequence of four Tipp points without reply, O’Dwyer, Shane McGrath and Patrick Maher all adding to Tipp’s lead.

By now, Tipp were utterly dominant. Captain Brendan Maher dropped back as an extra layer of cover in midfield, which gave Tipp another option from Darren Gleeson’s tasty puck-outs and also allowed Pádraic Maher to sit back and dominate Limerick’s puck-outs with another of his typically Hollywood performances.

While Shane Dowling (free) and Breen kept Limerick in the game with scores, it was only a matter of time before the hosts’ defence was breached again. The second goal came on 22 minutes, and McCarthy might decide to hide behind the couch for tonight’s highlights on The Sunday Game – he played his man from the front and was first to the ball, but allowed the sliothar to slip through his grasp and Callanan was on hand to deliver the ultimate punishment.

Callanan could and probably should have ended the game as a contest in the 25th minute, but when he was played through on goal, he uncharacteristically snatched at his shot and hit the side netting. Forde and the buzzing O’Dwyer flung over further scores to leave Tipp eight ahead, before Limerick hit back with a rally, Hannon and captain Donal O’Grady firing over much-needed scores in added time.
Facing into the wind and a six-point deficit, Limerick needed some magic, and they looked to 19-year-old Lynch to provide it. With Stapleton now gone off with an injury, Lynch made it his business to spook Michael Cahill. He was central to Limerick’s goal, forcing a great save from the excellent Gleeson – one of three successive stops in an amazing sequence – before he was chopped down and referee Brian Gavin awarded a penalty, which Dowling nailed.

Limerick had their tails up, but they failed to take advantage, firing a succession of wides before Dowling landed a 65 and a huge free to leave one in it, 1-14 to 2-12. Conor O’Brien was also brought across to curb the renascent Lynch. Strangely, Tipp were struggling with the wind at their backs, their passing having failed them when the easy option was to drive it long into the forwards. Then, around the 50th minute, they regained their composure and hit four points in a row to settle things. They lost Callanan to a blood injury and in the shake-up, Patrick Maher moved to full-forward, and his presence finally forced Limerick to capitulate.

‘Bonner’ Maher set up Forde for the killer goal on 55 minutes, while James Woodlock and the brilliant O’Dwyer chipped in with further scores to leave nine points in it. At that point, the game was up and the Limerick supporters started drifting out of the ground, resigned to their place in Monday morning’s Qualifier draw. All that was left was for Tipp to further enhance their reputation before the Munster final with some superb scores. By the time Breen landed their fourth goal in added time, they had delivered a clear warning message to their rivals this year.

Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final – Limerick 1-23 Tipperary 2-13

Limerick defeated Tipperary by 1-23 to 2-13 in the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship Semi-Final on Sunday June 21st at the Gaelic Grounds, Limerick.

Willie Griffin leads Limerick into Munster decider with Cork

By Jackie Cahill for the Irish Examiner

Limerick 1-23 Tipperary 2-13: Don Flynn’s Limerick made it through to a first Munster intermediate hurling final since 2011 with a comfortable seven-point victory over Tipperary in yesterday’s semi-final at the Gaelic Grounds.

The Shannonsiders had a 1-11 haul from their lethal inside line as they set up a July 8 provincial decider against Cork. Tipp have contested the last three Munster finals in this grade but were outclassed by their opponents as captain Willie Griffin led by example once again for Limerick. Griffin bagged 2-6 in the quarter-final victory over Waterford and hit 0-5 yesterday.

Full-forward Tom Morrissey collected 1-3 and in the other corner, Mike Fitzgibbon helped himself to 0-3. Limerick had nine different scorers on a day when Tipp were over-reliant on Adrian Ryan and Liam McGrath for attacking inspiration. McGrath, Tipperary’s 2011 All-Ireland minor winning football captain, finished with a haul of 1-5, including a late consolation goal. Ryan scored four points, split evenly between both halves, but Tipp didn’t help themselves with a haul of 13 wides.

And it was Limerick, despite playing against the breeze from the start, who roared into a 0-6 to 0-0 lead within 10 minutes. McGrath finally opened Tipp’s account with a 10th minute free but Limerick led by 1-10 to 0-7 at half-time, as Morrissey pounced for a 30th minute goal after Griffin’s initial effort was saved. Tipp were 11 points down on three occasions in the second half but did manage goals from Kieran Morris and McGrath to make the final scoreline more respectable.

Limerick had class running through every line of their starting 15, starting with the presence of 2007 All-Star Brian Murray between the sticks. At centre-back, U21 star Diarmuid Byrnes stood out and the Patrickswell man banged over four trademark scores from long-range placed balls.

“We never got to the pace of it at all today,” Tipperary boss John Carroll admitted, while Limerick boss Don Flynn reflected: “Tipp beat us by a point last year and we wanted to turn them over today. We were well up for it.”

All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 1A – Offaly 1-20 Waterford 1-7

Offaly defeated Waterford by 1-20 to 1-7 in the All-Ireland Senior Football Championship Qualifiers Round 1A on Saturday June 20th at Fraher Field Dungarvan.

1A Qualifiers: Offaly too strong for Waterford

GAA Football All-Ireland Senior Championship Round 1A: Waterford 1-7 Offaly 1-20

Offaly secured their first championship success since 2011 as a scorching second half performance proved too much for Waterford on a boiling Saturday afternoon in Fraher Field.

Pat Flanagan’s outfit outscored the hosts by 1-11 to 0-2 after the resumption to coast home by 13 points. Man of the match Nigel Dunne totalled eight points as he stepped up in the absence of the injured Niall McNamee. The away side bolted out of the blocks and sprinted five points clear with only six minutes on the watch. No. 14 Dunne slotted two as Graham Guilfoyle, Joseph O’Connor and Anton Sullivan also split the posts. Mark Ferncombe landed Waterford’s opener after eight minutes and JJ Hutchinson added another. Guilfoyle and Bernard Allen extended Offaly’s lead to six but they missed glorious chances to put Waterford out of sight. The home side hit a purple patch before the interval.

On 32 minutes, Joey Veale put the finishing touches to a splendid counter attack as he fired low to the back of Alan Mulhall’s net. Boosted by further points courtesy of Ferncombe and Patrick Hurney, Tom McGlinchey’s charges trailed by 0-9 to 1-5 at the halfway stage.
Despite this wobble, Offaly re-emerged with a strong third quarter showing. They notched four points in a row to move 0-14 to 1-6 in front. Dunne was deadly accurate for the Faithful as he punished Waterford indiscipline. The Shamrocks front man accounted for six second half singles. Johnny Moloney and Peter Cunningham also blasted fantastic long range efforts as ten different scorers contributed.
On 65 minutes, Anton Sullivan’s point attempt slipped through Seán Barron’s grasp and Dean Crowley couldn’t prevent the ball from travelling across the white wash. Waterford could only register two second half points in response from Joey Veale and Liam Lawlor.

Munster U21 Hurling Q-Final – Waterford 1-21 Cork 1-11

Waterford defeated Cork by 1-21 to 1-11 in the Bord Gais Energy Munster U21 Hurling Championship Quarter-Final on Wednesday June 17th at Pairc Ui Rinn.

Munster U21: Impressive Déise march on

Report from GAA.ie

Waterford recorded their first U21 championship win since 2009 at Páirc Ui Rinn on Wednesday evening, recording a deserved 10-point victory over Cork to set up a Munster semi-final against Clare.

The Déise have struggled at this grade in recent years, but a star-studded team adorned by the presence of seven regulars from Derek McGrath’s blossoming senior side gave an accomplished display against Cork, and they look capable of going all the way in Munster this year, and possibly beyond.

They started slowly against Cork on Wednesday, but with Patrick Curran in outstanding form from placed balls, they turned it around to lead by three at the break. They dominated the game after the interval, and the result wasn’t in any real doubt after they hit five points within the first five minutes of the second half to move six clear.

They hit a goal late on through their outstanding wing-back Shane Bennett, who finished with 1-4 from play, while as well as the exploits of Curran, the match will be remembered for an exhibition of defending from Tadhg de Búrca, particularly in the first half when he seemed to be wherever Cork sent the sliotar.

Waterford led by three points at the break, recovering from a slow start to take control of an error-strewn first half. Cork, playing with a decent breeze behind them, took their chances in the first 10 minutes and points from Martin Brennan (2), Kevin O’Neill and Mark O’Connor (free) left them 0-4 to 0-2 ahead, with Waterford’s early points coming from Shane Bennett and DJ Foran.

Luke Meade’s point sent the unfancied young Rebels three clear, but Waterford finally hit the scoring streak the amount of possession they were having demanded, and they hit six points without reply between the 12th and 25th minute to take a 0-8 to 0-5 lead. With the majesterial De Burca mopping up at the back and launching attacks, Waterford found their range.

Five of their points before the break came from the stick of Curran, all from placed balls as the Cork defence struggled to avoid fouling the physically powerful Waterford forwards. Shane Bennett also struck his second of the half during the purple patch, a brilliant effort from distance on the right. Waterford deserved their lead at the interval, but one thing both sides could agree on – they needed to cut down their amount of wides, with both Cork and Waterford racking up a serious number of misses between them in the first 30 minutes.

It was a different story after the break though, as Waterford made a blistering start to the second half, clinically knocking over five points in the first five minutes after the restart. Cork substitute David Geary got the first point of the half but then Austin Gleeson replied with a beauty before points from Curran (2) and Stephen Bennett came alongside a third from the Ballysaggart man’s brother Shane.

Cork kept in touch with another superb Brennan score – his third of the evening – but Waterford were well on top as the game ticked towards the final quarter, and would have gone nine clear had Patrick Collins not made a fine save from a goal-bound Shane McNulty shot in the 42nd minute. As it was, Waterford led 0-16 to 0-10 with 15 minutes to go. They went seven clear when Curran clipped over the 10th point of a flawless display of striking, and eight clear when Bennett clipped over his fourth of the evening.

Luke Meade’s 57th minute goal for Cork, while extremely well-taken after a fine catch and finish, came too late to make any real difference for Damien Irwin’s side, and in any event it was followed a minute later by a goal from Man of the Match Shane Bennett.
Bennett stormed his way towards the Cork goal down the left, and after having an initial shot blocked, he reclaimed possession amid a mass of Cork defenders and kicked to the net.

Fittingly, Curran completed the scoring for Waterford with his 12th of the match, his fourth from play, and Waterford can now look forward to facing All-Ireland champions and U21 standard bearers Clare next month, with hopes for this Déise crop greatly strengthened by this display.

Munster SFC Semi-Final – Kerry 2-14 Tipperary 2-8

Kerry defeated Tipperary by 2-14 to 2-8 in the Munster Senior Football Championship Semi-Final on Sunday June 14th at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Munster SFC: Kerry east past Tipp into final

By Jackie Cahill at Semple Stadium, Thurles for GAA.ie

Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s Kerry beat Tipperary by six points in this afternoon’s Munster SFC semi-final, to set up a provincial showpiece with old rivals Cork on July 5.

Throw-in was delayed by 15 minutes as just the New Stand was open to punters attempting to gain access to Semple Stadium. When play got underway, Tipp led by 1-1 to 0-0 within four minutes, with two-goal hero Michael Quinlivan netting for the hosts. But Kerry came roaring back to led by 2-6 to 2-4 at half-time, Barry John Keane and Paul Geaney on target with goals before Quinlivan netted his second.

And a run of five successive points after half-time provided the platform for Kerry’s win, which sets up a Munster final clash with old rivals Cork on July 5. Kerry welcomed back Colm ‘Gooch’ Cooper after injury ruled him out of the entire 2014 campaign and the Dr. Crokes superstar scored three points, including two from play.

Tipp registered 13 wides to just five from Kerry and that was a crucial factor in their defeat. But the Premier County, beaten by 17 points in Killarney two years ago, did close the gap and look set for another good run in the qualifiers. Tipp’s U21 captain Colin O’Riordan started well but seemed to be hampered by injury as the game progressed. And another U21 star, Ian Fahey, was ruled out with a hamstring injury sustained during the warm-up.

Scorers for Tipperary: M Quinlivan 2-0, C Sweeney 0-2 (2f), C O’Riordan 0-1, G Mulhaire 0-1, B Fox 0-1, K O’Halloran 0-1 (1 ’45’), B Grogan 0-1 (1f), J Lonergan 0-1
