Munster SFC: Tipperary crush Waterford

MUNSTER SFC QUARTER-FINAL: TIPPERARY 1-24 WATERFORD 0-5

By Jackie Cahill for GAA.ie

Peter Creedon’s Tipperary crushed Waterford by 22 points in this afternoon’s Munster Senior Football Championship quarter-final. The Premier County were in devastating scoring form as they set up a provincial semi-final clash with Munster and All-Ireland champions Kerry in a fortnight.

Tipp had ten different scorers on the day but the only black spot on a productive afternoon was the sight of 2014 All Star nominee Colin O’Riordan hobbling off with a hip injury in the second half. Tipp will hope that their inspirational U21 captain will be ready in two weeks as the hosts will harbour genuine hopes of rattling Kerry.

Despite playing against the breeze in the first half, Tipp led by 1-13 to 0-3 at the break, with six different players contributing to the scoresheet. Steven O’Brien was immense at midfield, clipping over three points in each half, but he wasn’t alone as the hosts swamped outclassed Waterford with hard running from all areas of the pitch.

Tipp’s goal was scored by Michael Quinlivan in the 25th minute, as the Commercials forward fisted home from close range after Conor Sweeney’s attempted point from a free struck the upright. As Tipp ran riot, Waterford managed just three points in the first half, two from Michael O’Halloran and a JJ Hutchinson free.

Tipp led by six points before Waterford managed their first score, popped over by O’Halloran in the 13th minute. But Tipp’s goal increased the daylight between the teams and Creedon’s slick charges could have one or two more. In front of 1,641 spectators, Tipp picked up where they had left off after half-time, registering the first five scores of the second half.

Peter Acheson, O’Brien, Austin, Séamus Kennedy and George Hannigan were all on target before Waterford stalwart Shane Briggs, beginning his 14th championship campaign, opened Waterford’s second half account in the 51st minute. But Tom McGlinchey’s Waterford managed just one more point for the remainder of the game, a Hutchinson free, as Tipp piled on the misery.

Christy Ring Cup Hurling Semi-Final – Kerry 6-27 Kildare 0-9

Kerry defeated Kildare by 6-27 to 0-9 in the Christy Ring Cup Hurling Semi-Final on Saturday May 30th at Newbridge.

Kerry annihilate Kildare in semi-final

By Robbie J Dunne for RTE.ie

Kildare 0-09 Kerry 6-27

Kildare’s bid to retain the Christy Ring Cup was ended by a ruthless Kerry side in Newbridge on Saturday afternoon on a scoreline of 6-27 to 0-09. Kerry return to the final, which is their third in a row and fifth in six years, thanks to their 36-point defeat of Kildare.

Mikey Boyle was Kerry’s hero on the day as he notched up four goals and one point before being substituted to a hero’s applause in St Conleth’s Park. He had a hat-trick in the first half before Kildare substitute Mark Grace was sent off just three minutes after coming on and it was all downhill for the Lilywhites after that.

Kerry will play Derry, who overcame Down in the other semi-final, and will be aiming for the round-robin stage of the Liam MacCarthy cup when it kicks off next year. Kerry led 2-09 to 0-03 after 25 minutes thanks to two goals from Boyle and some sharp shooting from placed balls by Shane Nolan.

At this point, Kildare substitute Grace was sent off for an incident off the ball and Kildare found themselves in serious trouble. Matters would only worsen for Kildare when Boyle secured his hat-trick just minutes later and sent Kerry on the road to victory.

Further points from Padraig Boyle, Michael O’Leary and Shane Nolan would push Kerry’s lead out to 19 at half time as they lead 3-13 to 0-03 at the break. Michael O’Leary and Eanna O’Neill would trade points to begin the second half but Kerry would go on to land 2-08 without reply to really bury any chance of a Kildare comeback with 20 minutes still to play. Another goal from Colum Harty really left the scoreline looking disastrous for Kildare as Kerry continued to compound their misery on home soil.

Despite the heavy deficit Kildare would finish strongest with scores from Dinny Stapleton, Gerry Keegan, Martin Fitzgerald and Niall O’Muineachain. It was too little too late for Kildare at that stage as the game petered out in the dying stages. Boyle finished with 4-01 before being substituted to the applause of the travelling Kerry support.

Munster SHC: Limerick beat Clare in thriller

MUNSTER SENIOR HURLING CHAMPIONSHIP QUARTER-FINAL: LIMERICK 1-19 CLARE 2-15

By Brian Murphy at Semple Stadium, Thurles for GAA.ie

Limerick moved into the semi-finals of the Munster Championship and a meeting with Tipperary on June 21 after a heart-stopping one-point win over Clare at Semple Stadium, Thurles.

Sub John Fitzgibbon hit the winner for Limerick in the 68th minute, sealing a superb win for Shannonsiders, who were six points clear at the three-quarter mark but found themselves in real trouble when Aaron Cunningham sparked a brave Clare comeback with two superb goals in the closing stages.

After a poor and largely uneventful first half, the game crackled into life at the start of the second half, Clare having lost joint captain Patrick Donnellan to a red card for an off-the-ball incident involving Donal O’Grady which sparked a melee just before the break. That incident added the necessary spice to a game that was memorable to that point only for the performance of Limerick’s precocious attacker Cian Lynch, who hit three points from play on a debut brimful of promise. Cunningham stole his thunder, though, scoring 2-1 for Clare after coming off the bench in the 48th minute.

Limerick, however, looked on course to win comfortably at that point, and were six ahead, 1-16 to 0-13, when Graeme Mulcahy pounced for a goal after 52 minutes. Cunningham responded with a goal almost immediately for Clare, showing the kind of direct running and killer instinct Clare had lacked in support of the brilliant lone front man Shane O’Donnell.

Limerick were then reduced to 14 men when Seánie Tobin was given his marching orders for a shoulder charge within seconds of coming on, and suddenly Clare had all the momentum. When Cunningham knifed through the Limerick defence and hammered home a second goal in the 64th minute, and O’Donnell got off the mark having toiled manfully after a super battle with Richie McCarthy, Clare were level with four minutes to go. However, Limerick dug deep and found a winner in the end, Fitzgibbon striking a fine shot from play over the bar to settle a hugely enjoyable tussle.

As expected, Conor McGrath was not fit to start and was replaced in the Clare line-up by Gearóid O’Connell from Ballyea, who started in midfield, allowing O’Donnell and David Reidy to form a two-man inside forward line. Limerick lined out as selected earlier in the week, Barry Hennessy, Seánie O’Brien and Lynch making their championship debuts.

Clare were short four of their eight All Stars from 2013 – Podge Collins, Conor McGrath, Colm Galvin and the suspended Brendan Bugler – and started like a team still getting to know each other, although neither side had in fact been in competitive action since late March, when their respective Allianz League campaigns ended in disappointment.

Shane Dowling, whose contribution of 0-11 from placed balls was ultimately the difference between the sides, was causing Clare all sorts of problems in the opening quarter, his physical presence on the edge of the square giving his team-mates a target they looked to at every opportunity.

It was the skill levels of and youthful audacity of Lynch, though, that lit up an untidy opening to the game – last year’s minor captain marking his senior championship debut with a superb score on 12 minutes. By the time Lynch had snapped his second of the game stylishly over the bar, Limerick were 0-7 to 0-4 up and must have been very happy with their first 20 minutes’ work.

Slowly, though, Clare worked their way back into the game, perhaps affronted when Lynch audaciously flipped the slither over Domhnall O’Donovan’s head and collected it at speed in another wonderful cameo from the precocious Patrickswell man, who has pedigree running through his bloodlines.

O’Donnell’s movement and willingness to battle up front on his own was giving McCarthy the jitters, while Limerick never seemed quite at ease with having a spare man at the back. When McCarthy fouled O’Donnell in the 25th minute, Clare had the gap back to one, with Colin Ryan firing over his fifth score of the half from a free.

If Limerick had a ‘spare’ man at the back in the first half, they had two when Donnellan was given his marching orders for felling Donal O’Grady with a stray hurl as the sides went in at the break, sparking a melee which just about summed up an untidy an error-strewn first half.

Clare seemed to gain strength from being a man down and led for the first time six minutes into the second half when John Conlon fired over three scores from play in a spell of dominance. Limerick hit back, and when Shane Dowling found his rhythm with a series of placed balls and then Mulcahy pounced for a 52nd minute goal, hitting a ground stroke past Patrick Kelly with the glee of a real poacher, Limerick were six clear, a man up, and seemingly on their way to a comfortable win.

It wasn’t until Cunningham came on to join him at the apex of the attack that Clare really reached the pitch of the game. Cunningham had hit a superb point within seconds of coming in for David Reidy to show he meant business and his two brilliantly-taken goals had Limerick in all sorts of trouble before they helf their nerve to win it through Fitzgibbon at the death.

Clare and Limerick meet for the 53rd time in the championship, with Limerick leading 34-17 (one game was drawn) from their previous 52 clashes.

This will be their first meeting in the Munster championship since 2008 when Clare won by 4-12 to 1-16 in the semi-final in Thurles. They met again in the 2012 All-Ireland qualifiers, when Limerick won, but it was Clare’s turn a year later when they won the All-Ireland semi-final by seven points.

Last Five Championship Clashes
2013: Clare 1-22 Limerick 0-18 (All-Ireland semi-final)
2012: Limerick 3-18 Clare 1-20 (All-Ireland qualifiers)
2008: Clare 4-12 Limerick 1-16 (Munster semi-final)
2007: Limerick 1-23 Clare 1-16 (All-Ireland quarter-final)
2006: Clare 2-21 Limerick 0-10 (All-Ireland qualifiers)

Limerick are seeking to win their first Munster championship game of the season for a third successive year, having beaten Tipperary in 2013 and 2014. Clare lost to Cork in their opening game last year and beat Waterford a year earlier.

Davy Fitzgerald played against Limerick in the championship on seven occasions, winning three (1993-95-2006) and losing four (1990-1991-94-96). TJ Ryan played against Clare in three championship games, winning in 1994 and 1996 and losing in 1995.

Clare have won only one competitive game since the beginning of April last year. It came against Dublin in this year’s League. Otherwise they lost to Tipperary (twice), Cork (twice), Kilkenny (twice), Wexford (once), Galway (once) in League and Championship. They also drew with Wexford in last year’s All-Ireland qualifiers.

Clare were eliminated from last year’s All-Ireland race after losing a Round 1 qualifier replay against Wexford, having earlier lost the Munster semi-final to Cork. Limerick beat Tipperary and lost to Cork in Munster before beating Wexford in the All-Ireland quarter-final. They lost the All-Ireland semi-final to Kilkenny by two points.

Clare were relegated from Division 1A this year after losing a play-off with Kilkenny. They had earlier lost four of five games.

Limerick finished second in Division 1B this year (three wins, one defeat, one draw) before losing the quarter-final to Dublin by 12 points.

Next Sunday’s winners will play Tipperary in the Munster semi-final on June 21.

Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter-Final – Limerick 3-14 Clare 2-15

Limerick defeated Clare by 3-14 to 2-15 in the Munster Intermediate Hurling Championship Quarter-Final on Sunday May 24th at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Willie Griffin plays captain’s part as Limerick march on

By Jackie Cahill for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Limerick 3-14 Clare 2-15: Willie Griffin played a captain’s part in Thurles as Limerick’s intermediate hurlers got a memorable day off to a winning start.

Adare clubman Griffin hit 2-6 as his side saw off a youthful Clare outfit in the Munster intermediate hurling championship quarter-final, to set up a Munster semi-final with Tipperary on June 21.

Limerick were six points behind in the first half but a deadly two-goal blast midway through the second half provided a winning platform.

Mike Fitzgerald was on the pitch less than four minutes when he blasted home Limerick’s second goal before Griffin struck a beauty. The quickfire strikes handed Limerick a 2-13 to 2-9 lead . The sides were level twice in the early stages, and again after half-time, but Limerick were full value for the win.

At half-time, Limerick were 0-9 to 1-8 behind as Ian Galvin’s sixth minute goal effectively separated the sides.

And Clare bagged a second goal in the 38th minute, with opposite corner forward Ryan Taylor on target. That prompted a response from Limerick and the introduction of Fitzgerald was a masterstroke from boss Don Flynn.

He cracked home the goal that renewed the Limerick challenge before Griffin netted twice in five minutes. 2007 All-Star goalkeeper Brian Murray also played his part for Limerick between the sticks, with crucial saves.

Galvin hit 1-5 for Clare but it wasn’t enough to prevent defeat for the team managed by Donal Moloney, one half of Clare’s former U21 management team. David Conroy also impressed with four points from play, including three in the first half, for Clare.

Limerick were wasteful before the break, registering eight wides, but when goal chances presented themselves, they were clinically taken. Limerick haven’t won the Munster intermediate hurling title since 2008 but victory over Tipp next month would put them within an hour of provincial glory.

For Clare, the dream of a first Munster crown since 2011 came to an abrupt end, despite an encouraging first half.

Munster SFC Q-Final – Clare 0-15 Limerick 0-13

Clare defeated Limerick by 0-15 to 0-13 in the Munster Senior Football Championship Quarter-Final on Saturday May 23rd at Cusack Park Ennis.

Munster SFC: Clare hang on to beat Limerick

MUNSTER SENIOR FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP QURTER-FINAL: CLARE 0-15 LIMERICK 0-13

Clare edged into a Munster Football Championship semi-final meeting with Cork next month after suffering a real scare against neighbours Limerick at Cusack Park.

The hosts looked to be cruising at half-time with a 0-9 to 0-4 lead until Limerick brought a real fight to the contest after the restart spearheaded by Ian Ryan and Peter Nash.

But two late scores from Clare substitute Cathal McInerney proved the difference to send his side into the last four and dispatch Limerick to the qualifiers.

In the opening half Clare started brightest with skipper Gary Brennan embarking on a solo run and fisting over inside the opening 20 seconds.

Robert Browne got Limerick off the mark at the other end before Clare’s best goal chance of the half arrived when Shane Brennan’s low drive was well saved by Brian Scanlan.

Ian Ryan then gave Limerick the lead as Clare’s Eoin Cleary, Pádraic Collins and Shane Brennan were all guilty of kicking wides; but they got away with it as the Banner still managed five scores on the trot.

Eoin Cleary fisted over before Shane and Gary Brennan stretched Clare’s lead, with Limerick starting to give the ball away very cheaply.
Cathal O’Connor’s pointed 45 was followed by Pádraic Collins’ first point of the evening which received a huge roar from the Clare faithful inside Cusack Park.

Limerick finally ended a 20-minute scoring drought when goalkeeper Scanlon dispatched a free but Clare responded with three more unanswered points through Cleary and a double from skipper Brennan to bring his personal tally to 0-4.
Scanlan fired over a 45 for John Brudair’s charges in stoppage time at the end of the half to make it 0-9 to 0-4, with the hosts in firm control of the contest.

But Limerick greatly improved after the restart and despite falling six behind when Jamie Malone scored early on, they would manage to get within a point of their neighbours.

Peter Nash, Stephen Cahill, Ian Ryan and Iain Corbett and Cian Sheehan all contributed to Limerick’s fine revival as Clare were suddenly on the ropes and badly needed a score.

That score eventually came from Rory Donnelly before Ryan kept Limerick just a point behind once more, and David McInerney and Scanlan swapped scores from placed balls to set up a tense finish.

As Limerick fought bravely for a leveller, McInerney popped up again at the death to dispel any chances of a replay by firing over and dragging his side over the line and end a cracking second half of football.
