ELECTRIC IRELAND MUNSTER MHC QUARTER-FINAL: TIPPERARY 1-14 WATERFORD 0-16

Tipperary booked their place in the semi-finals of the Electric Ireland Munster Minor Hurling Championship this evening, despite registering just 1-3 from play. Liam Cahill’s Premier County didn’t play particularly well but still did just about enough to set up a last four provincial showdown with Clare on July 1.

Tipp registered eleven points from placed balls – eight Daragh Carey frees and three points from Brian McGrath, including two crucial 65s in the closing minutes. And Waterford can consider themselves slightly unfortunate to have been pitched into a play off with Limerick, having looked the better team in the first half. With Aaron O’Sullivan picking off four points from play, Waterford were 0-9 to 0-6 clear approaching the break.

O’Sullivan had gone close to an early goal for Waterford, denied by Padraig Hayes, and Tipp didn’t manage a score from play until sub Lyndon Fairbrother pointed in the 26th minute. But Fairbrother was on target again on the half hour mark and in first half stoppage time, Ruadhan Mulrooney scrambled home the game’s only goal after David Gleeson and Fairbrother were denied.

Ahead by 1-7 to 0-9 at the break in front of 2,821 spectators, Tipp went behind after the restart and the second half was level five times. But after McGrath edged Tipp in front with six minutes remaining, from a well-taken 65, Carey put two between the sides.

Waterford’s leading scorer Jack Prendergast responded for last year’s beaten Munster finalists but McGrath struck again to restore Tipp’s two-point advantage. Waterford kept going as Eoghan Murray reduced the deficit again but Peter Hogan shot wide in stoppage time as the Déise searched in vain for an equalising score.
