D1: Colm O’Neill double downs Monaghan

Allianz Football League Division I: Monaghan 1-16 Cork 2-14

Cork made it two wins from two in the Allianz League Division I in an enthralling game against Monaghan in front of 5,248 at Castleblayney on Sunday.

Monaghan led for long spells, with Kieran Hughes scoring the opening goal, but a brace of three-pointers by Colm O’Neill, who had a superb tussle with Ryan Wylie, proved enough for Cork to just grab the victory. Monaghan took a mere 18 seconds to open the scoring through Fintan Kelly, but frees by Donncha O’Connor and Colm O’Neill settled Cork into the game. Kieran Duffy and Conor McManus replied for Monaghan, but the free-taking of O’Neill and O’Connor kept Cork in touch.

Kieran Hughes lit this game up with a brilliant goal on 21 minutes, while Paul Finlay added his name to the scoresheet with a fine point, before O’Connor got Cork’s opening score from play with a tidy finish in the 29th minute. The teams continued to trade scores right up to half-time, with Conor Boyle doubling Monaghan’s lead, only for another O’Connor free – after Dessie Mone had been shown the game’s only black card – to leave Cork within a point at the interval: 1-6 to 0-8.

Monaghan started the second half brightly with points by McManus (two) and Finlay, but their work was undone when O’Neill scored his first goal and Brian O’Driscoll added a point. A Dermot Malone point and a brace of frees by McManus regained Monaghan’s advantage, but O’Neill rattled in 1-1 in quick succession, as the lead changed hands yet again.

Frees by Finlay and McManus were cancelled out by points from play by Brian Hurley and Eoin Cadogan. A ninth McManus point brought Monaghan level once more, but O’Neill’s right-footed point from play proved to be the winner. There was still time for Monaghan to earn another chance to take a share of the spoils, but McManus, who was attempting to take his tally into double figures, saw his free drift wide and time was up, leaving Cork out on their own at the top with four points to their name.
