Mitchelstown CBS captured the An Dara Ui Dhonobhain Cup following a 2-17 to 1-5 victory over Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal Blarney in the Munster Under 16.5 C Hurling championship final at Mallow on Wednesday November 26th.

Mitchelstown CBS had a very easy win over Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal (Blarney) in the Munster Under 16 C HC final at Mallow on Wednesday November 26th. From the start the winners quickly gained control. They defended confidently with their midfielders getting through an enormous amount of work that resulted in their attack getting some very good scores. Early points by George Pendle (2) and Cathal O’Mahony opened up an early lead. Blarney settled and they had two points in quick succession. The first following a free out of defence by Declan O’Hanlon to Michael John Shine who pointed and the second three minutes later when O’Hanlon and Peter McSweeney combined for James Dineen who sent over 0-3 to 0-2. CBS upped their performance significantly. Rapid points by George Pendle, James Keating and Dylan Kent opened up a lead 0-6 to 0-2. Blarney had two wides with Adrian English having a very good point for the winners. Michael John Shine pointed a free for Blarney. CBS struck for their first goal when a great delivery out of defence by Jordan Sheehy found Mark Keane who passed to George Pendle who placed Cathal O’Mahony who found the net. Both sides exchanged points with the winners 1-11 to 0-4 clear at the interval.

James Keating pointed a ’65 on the resumption with Dylan Kent putting Mark Keane through for a great point 1-13 to 0-4. There was no way back for Blarney who now trailed by 12 points. Both sides made a number of substitutions. Michael John Shine had Blarney’s last point from a free in the 38th minute. Mark Keane put Cathal O’Mahony through on goal but a superb save by James Walsh denied a certain goal. The winners second goal came in the 43rd minute when a long delivery by Cathal O’Sullivan was finished by George Pendle. Scoil Mhuire replied immediately when David Donovan goaled 2-13 to 1-5. The last few minutes saw the winners add points by Cillian Dollion, George Pendle and James Keating that gave them a very easy win. After the game Christy O’Donovan grandfather of the late Darragh O’Donobhain presented the O’Donobhain Memorial Cup to Adrian English CBS captain in the presence of John Brennan Administrator Munster Colleges Board.

Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal Blarney and Mitchelstown CBS in Munster final

This Wednesday November 26th at 1:30pm in Mallow, the first Munster Under 16.5 C Hurling championship final will take place for the An Dara Ui Dhonobhain Cup.

Two Cork schools have come through from the 25 entries. Both sides have had impressive runs on their way to the final. Mitchelstown CBS had a preliminary round game against Presentation Ballingarry that CBS won easily on a scoreline of 4-20 to 1-14. In the lst round proper CBS played Scarriff CC and they won easily by 3-15 to 1-7. Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal (Blarney) faced Colaiste an Trocaire Rathkeale in their first round with the Cork side having an impressive win by 3-15 to 0- 4.

In the quarter finals CBS played St Joseph’s Borrisoleigh and ran out comfortable winners by 4-14 to 0-7. In the same quarter final stage the Blarney side overcame St. Anne’s Killaloe by 3-12 to 0-13.

The semi finals were played last week. CBS were first into the action in Tallow on Friday against St Augustine’s Dungarvan. The Mitchelstown side trailed 0-6 to 0- 5 at half time. They put in a great second half and helped by two goals by Mark Keane they emerged winners by 2-15 to 1-10. Key players for CBS were Mark Keane, George Pendle, Cathal O’Mahony, James Keating and Adrian English. CBS scorers were Mark Keane 2-1, George Pendle 0-6(0-1f) Adrian English 0-3, James Keating 0-3 (0-2f, 0-1’65) Cathal O’Mahony 0-2.

Scoil Mhuire Gan Smal were in action in their Munster semi final on Monday in Ballincollig against Coachford Community School. Three first half goals helped the Blarney side to lead at the break 3-9 to 0- 9. Coachford got back on terms in the second half closing the gap but a goal by David O’Donovan in the 43rd minute restored an 8 point lead 4-10 to 1-11. Scoil Mhuire with good displays by David O’Donovan, Michael John Shine, Declan Hannon, and James Dineen held out for a 4-15 to 1- 20 win. Scoil Mhuire scorers were David O’Donovan 2-2, Michael John Shine 0-7 (0-6f, 0-1 ’65) James Dineen 1-3, Peter McSweeney 1-0, Darragh McNamara 0-1, Barry Dennehy 0-1, Conor Power 0-1. The final is very much a 50/50 outcome. Both teams have good scoring power with some talented players on both sides.

The cup for this final is the Darragh Ui Donobhain Memorial Cup. Darragh Ui ‘Donobhain’s short life was from 1996 to 2011. He was a student at Desmond College Newcastlewest Co Limerick. He was a very talented young player in both football and hurling. He played with his parish club team Monagea at all underage levels, with his school and with Limerick Under 15s. Darragh represented his county on Development Squads at Under 13, 14 & 15 age groups. He was captain of the Desmond College lst year team that won the Limerick Colleges final in 2009. He passed away on December 12th 2011 as a result of Sudden Adult Death Syndrome.
