Ryan fires two goals as Waterford defeat Dublin in All-Ireland minor quarter-final

Waterford 2-18 Dublin 0-19

Report from thescore.ie

CAPTAIN SHANE RYAN fired home two goals to help Waterford defeat Dublin in today’s Electric Ireland All-Ireland minor hurling quarter-final in Thurles. Waterford bounced back from last Tuesday’s Munster final replay loss to Limerick with De La Salle club man Ryan crucially raising a green flag in each half. Patrick Curran, Shane Bennett, Peter Hogan and Cormac Curran all impressed in the scoring stakes as well for the Deise youngsters as they set up an All-Ireland semi-final meeting with Kilkenny on August 10th.

Dublin saw their season draw to a close. After defeat in the Leinster final, they had good performances today from Shane Barrett, Rian McBride, Con O’Callaghan and Chris Bennett but their failure to hit the net cost them in the end. Waterford were in front by 1-8 to 0-8 at the interval with Ryan’s finish to the net in the 14th minute propelling them into the lead. That score helped them go 1-4 to 0-2 in front although the accuracy of Bennett kept Dublin in touch as they cut the gap by the interval.

There was a burst of scores from both sides after the break and Dublin trimmed the deficit to two points on a couple of occasions. But the crucial score arrived when Ryan broke through for his second goal of the match in the 42nd minute after being set up by Colm Roche. That pushed Waterford into a 2-12 to 0-13 lead but Dublin admirably fought back. Substitute Sean Gray made a decent impression and they were only 2-16 to 0-19 adrift in the closing stages. But Waterford finished strongly to secure the spoils thanks to points from Hogan and Bennett.

Scorers for Waterford: Shane Ryan 2-1, Patrick Curran (3f) & Shane Bennett (1 sl) 0-4 each, Cormac Curran & Peter Hogan 0-3 each, Darragh Lyons 0-2, Colm Roche 0-1.

Scorers for Dublin: Chris Bennett 0-8 (6f), Con O’Callaghan, Tom Fox, Eoin O’Conghaile & Sean Gray (1 65), 0-2 each, Rian McBride, Eoghan McHugh & Sean Ryan 0-1 each.
