Allianz Hurling League Div 2A

Kerry 3-14 Carlow 0-17

Report from the Kerry GAA web site

Kerry secured a place in the Div 2A AHL Final with a good victory over fellow leaders at the start of the Day, Carlow, at Tralee’s Austin Stack Park on Sunday.

Kerry got off to a good start and points from Shane Nolan, Daniel Collins and Colm Harty inside the opening five minutes showed that Kerry meant business. They led by 3 to 2 when Colm Harty after a great run, set up Padraig Boyle for Kerry’s first goal in the 7th minute. Kerry followed up with 3 points on the trot to lead 1-6 to 0-2 after 10 minutes. The sides swapped points twice in the next 12 minutes, but then Kerry took their foot off the pedal despite playing with the strong wind and Carlow rattled over 4 points on the trot, 3 from frees, and Kerry’s lead was down to a goal with half time looming. However, a fortuitous goal from Darragh O’Connell, whose harmless shot from the wing deceived Carlow keeper Kevin Kehoe, saw Kerry lead by 2-8 to 0-8 at the break.

Carlow continued on the ascendancy on the restart, picking off 4 more points without reply in the first five minutes and Kerry needed a break. Darragh O’Connell pointed and after Carlow marksman from frees David English replied, David Butler and Shane Nolan had two good scores to lead by 2-11 to 0-13 after 20 minutes of the half.

English had two more pointed frees for Carlow but just when the Leinster men seemed to be getting the better of the battle, Shane Nolan gave a peach of a pass to Mikey Boyle and Boyle turned and shot low and hard to the net from a wide angle. Shane Nolan and Brendan Brosnan added points and Kerry were home and hosed.

Kerry play Londan in their final game in Ruislip on Sunday next while Carlow are at home to Westmeath in their final game where a win for the homside would see a Kerry v Carlow final.

Scorers:

Kerry: Darragh O’Connell 1-3, Shane Nolan 0-5, Mikey Boyle and Padraig Boyle 1-0 each, Colm Harty 0-2, Daniel Collins, David Butler and Brendan Brosnan 0-1 each.

Subs: Kerry: Philip Lucid for Paudie O’Connor, David Butler for A. Boyle, Brendan Brosnan for P. Boyle, Tom Murnane for J. Casey and Anthony Fealy for T. Casey.
