Galway hold on to land Tipperary in trouble

Report from GAA.ie

Allianz Hurling League Division IA: Galway 3-16 Tipperary 1-19

Galway beat Tipperary for the first time in seven years to secure their second win of their Allianz League campaign. Goals from Niall Healy, Conor Cooney and Jonathan Glynn laid the foundation but Tipperary never gave up with Seamus Callanan hitting 1-11.

Galway started well against the wind with three unanswered points. Tipperary wasted a great opportunity to draw level after five minutes. Michael Heffernan burst through the Galway rearguard only to see his shot saved by Colm Callanan. And the Galway net-minder was alert to the rebound to deny Patrick ‘Bonner’ Maher with a wonderful save.

Buoyed by their goalkeeper’s efforts, Galway kept on top of Tipperary. The home side led 0-7 to 0-6 before Niall Healy struck the game’s first goal after 20 minutes. The Craughwell clubman left Tipperary goalkeeper Darren Gleeson rooted to the spot with a fantastic finish.

Galway pressed home their advantage with a second goal just five minutes later. Jonathan Glynn was hauled down by Paddy Stapleton. Referee Anthony Stapleton awarded Galway a penalty and showed his namesake a yellow card. Conor Cooney rifled home the penalty to make it 2-8 to 0-8 in favour of Anthony Cunningham’s men.

Galway rounded off the half with their third goal through Glynn. The Ardrahan man soloed through the Tipperary defence before flicking the ball into the net to leave Galway 3-8 to 0-9 to the good at half-time.

The home side were playing with the wind in the second-half and notched another three points in succession through Johnny Coen, David Burke and Iarla Tannian. Shane McGrath and Seamus Callanan kept Tipperary in touch before Burke grabbed his third score of the game to make it 3-16 to 0-16 with nine minutes left.

Galway centre-back Iarla Tannian was then given his marching orders after a second yellow card. Galway were forced to play the remaining eight minutes with 14 men and Tipperary capitalised on their numerical advantage.

Seamus Callanan scored three points, two from frees and one from play, before grabbing a goal for the visitors from a short-range free with just a minute remaining. Galway managed to hold on in the dying moments to emerge three-point winners with a scoreline of 3-16 to 1-19.
