Tipp shade battle as tactics thrown out window

By Diarmuid O’Flynn for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary 3-25 Cork 4-19

Tactics? Who needs ‘em! Just throw in the ball and let the players at it. That seemed to be the attitude of both management teams for yesterday’s high-scoring Allianz Hurling League quarter-final in Thurles. First it was Cork, forced to recover from conceding 2-4 without reply in the opening eight minutes, Tipp wing-forward Denis Maher with the first goal inside a minute, corner-forward Niall O’Meara with the second, doubling on a miss-hit shot by James Woodlock.

Recover Cork did, and then some, 2-3 of their own without reply in the next eight minutes, Seamus Harnedy with both goals after switching from centre-forward to full. Now it was Tipperary on the rack but they too got themselves reorganised, fought back, and a third goal before the break — this one from the outstanding John ‘Bubbles’ O’Dwyer — saw them take charge again, 3-9 to 2-8 on 32 minutes. Cork though weren’t done and an Anthony Nash 20m free ‘special’ got them back in the game, then a further three points saw them head for the dressing-room with a most unlikely lead, 3-11 to 3-9.

So, what master-tactic had the Cork management team pulled on the sideline? Shifting Harnedy to full-forward? Pulling wing-forward and captain Pa Cronin deep to help shore up the defence? Not a bit of it, said selector Seanie McGrath: “The pressure was on but the lads settled well, didn’t panic. We didn’t do anything on the line, they did it themselves, got the scores when they needed the scores. That’s testament to their character more than anything else.”

But what about Cronin and Harnedy, astute reactions to what was going on, surely? Again, no. “Pa Cronin dropping deep was part of the plan from the start, that our half-forwards would play deeper. Tipp have so much movement in their half-forward line we had to try to counter that. But Pa takes on the mantle of responsibility himself, he was outstanding I thought, played that role brilliantly.

Seamus Harnedy going to full-forward is part of a rotation policy. We’re not as rotational as Tipp but we do give freedom to Conor (Lehane) and Patrick (Horgan) and those to move around. But Seamie at the edge of the square was a revelation, especially in the air. That was a brilliant take for his first goal, a clinical finish.”

No tactical genius on the Cork sideline then — none with Tipperary either, according to manager Eamon O’Shea. “The most pleasing thing was that the lads sorted things out themselves on the pitch, managers have little effect on the line. People like to think of managers doing this, that or the other on the line but we’re not that powerful really. The players deserve great credit for the way they sorted things out when they had to.”

It all made for a thrilling spectacle, the ball whizzing up and down the field, scores coming in a non-stop torrent. In the second-half though it was Tipperary looking the more impressive and rounded outfit, no more goals but 16 points added to their half-time account, the bulk of those coming from the sublime O’Dwyer and free-taker Seamus Callanan.

Denis Maher, Noel McGrath (brilliant second-half) and Shane Bourke (two) also chipped in up front but even defenders Conor O’Brien and centre-back Brendan Maher (another impressive outing in that problem position) and midfielder Kieran Bergin got in on the act.

There was good reason too though why Tipperary opened the shoulders yesterday, says Eamon — they’re falling back in love with the game. “The spirit is the main thing that came through with the players over the past number of weeks. A manager has to say when he comes out after his team loses that things are going well but they were going well, contrary to what it looked like on the pitch. “It was only a matter of time and when they learn to like the ball they’ll be better. They have to like it a little bit more for my liking!”

Cork did manage another goal in this half, Patrick Horgan’s opportunism after Conor Lehane’s shot was saved by Darragh Egan, and the same man denied Cork keeper Nash with a save from an angled 20m free at the death that would have taken the game to extra-time. They fell short but, says Seanie McGrath, it was still a good campaign for them. “Our target at the start of the year was win promotion, find a few new players. We’ve done that, I think we found three or four players. Even though we lost today, we got what we wanted to get from this league.”

Tipperary edge out Cork in Thurles thriller

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Tipperary have clinched a place in the semi-finals of the Allianz Hurling League following a thrilling three-point victory over Cork at Semple Stadium this afternoon. The ancient rivals hit 51 scores between them as John O’Dwyer collected the Man of the Match award following his 1-7 haul for Tipp. All of O’Dwyer’s tally came from play on a day when Seamus Callanan added 0-8 to take his Allianz League tally to 5-40. Patrick Horgan hit 1-8 for Cork but still ended up on the losing side in a game pockmarked by seven goals, including six in the first half.

In front of 6,615 spectators in Thurles, Tipp cruised into a 2-4 to 0-0 lead with less than eight minutes on the watch. Denis Maher scored the opening goal of the game with just 36 minutes gone before League debutant Niall O’Meara hit an opportunistic goal in the seventh minute. But Cork responded through All Star Seamus Harnedy, who netted in the 12th and 15th minutes to bring Division IB winners Cork right back into contention. O’Dwyer kicked home Tipp’s third goal of the game in the 32nd minute but there was still time for Cork goalkeeper Anthony Nash to ram home an unstoppable goal from a trademark 20m free before half-time.

At the break, Cork were 3-11 to 3-9 in front but Tipp would have the breeze at their backs in the second half. The sides were level twice before Tipp cruised into a 3-21 to 3-15 lead by the 58th minute. There was another twist in the 65th minute when Patrick Horgan took advantage of an error by home goalkeeper Darragh Egan to bag a close-range goal.

But Tipp, despite being pegged back to within a point in the final minute, held on for the win as Noel McGrath and O’Dwyer tagged on late points. Cork had the chance to salvage a draw with the final puck of the game but Nash was denied from a 20m free by a sea of Tipperary bodies protecting the Premier County goal-line. Tipp will play All-Ireland champions Clare in the semi-finals of Allianz Hurling League in three weeks time.

Allianz Football League Division 3 – Limerick 1-13 Offaly 1-12

Limerick defeated Offaly by 1-13 to 1-12 in round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 3 on Sunday March 30th at O’Connor Park, Tullamore.

Riordan strike sends Offaly packing

Limerick 1-13 Offaly 1-12

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

OFFALY were sent back to Division 4 football after they were beaten by Limerick in Tullamore. Only a point separated the teams in the end and the game was there for the taking, but this was very much a Division 4-type performance from Offaly who have endured a miserable league campaign, losing all their games to date.

It was a giant step towards safety for a relieved Limerick side who did just enough to win. With the wind on their backs, Limerick did not have everything their own way in the first half. They led by 0-6 to 0-3 before a David Hanlon penalty goal two minutes before the break gave Offaly the lead. A point form Eoin Hanrahan, who had a superb first half, levelled it up at half- time (0-7 to 1-4) and Offaly were in with a good chance.

In the second half, however, Offaly played with the air of a side low on confidence and Limerick always looked like they had enough in the tank. It was a close run thing, though. In a nip and tuck second half, Offaly got back on terms with 12 minutes left and Peter Cunningham edged them in front with a brilliant point.

A goal from substitute John Riordan handed the initiative back to Limerick with six minutes left in the game. Anton Sullivan was outstanding for Offaly in the second half and he kept them snapping on the winners’ heels as they got the gap back to just a point, but it was Limerick who held on to secure the win.

Allianz Football League Division 1 – Kerry 2-15 Westmeath 0-13

Kerry defeated Westmeath by 2-15 to 0-13 in round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 1 on Sunday March 30th at Cusack Park, Mullingar.

Westmeath relegated as Kerry stride on

Report from the GAA.ie

An opportunist goal apiece from Kieran O’Leary and Paul Geaney in the first and second halves respectively helped Kerry to their expected win in front of 2,700 spectators at Cusack Park, Mullingar on Sunday afternoon, thereby condemning their hosts Westmeath to an immediate return to Division II next year.

As was the case in most of their earlier matches in the campaign, Westmeath gave as good as they got in the first half. With Kieran Martin, Callum McCormack and Denis Glennon availing of a decent supply of ball from midfield, the home side was deservedly on level terms (0-5 each) after 24 minutes. James O’Donoghue was being well marshalled by Kevin Maguire, with the Kingdom’s biggest threat coming from Paul Geaney.
However, the needless concession of a free in the 25th minute by Steven Gilmore was cleverly exploited by the visitors and Stephen O’Brien teed up Kieran O’Leary to slap the ball to the net from point-blank range.

Glennon and Bryan Sheehan (from a superbly struck ‘45’ from near the sideline) traded points, but Paul Bealin’s men finished the half strongly with points from Martin, Ray Connellan (a free) and Egan (also a free) to go in at the break deservedly on level terms (1-6 to 0-9). Callum McCormack and James O’Donoghue (who was far more prominent on the change of ends) exchanged points within seven minutes of the resumption. The crucial score of the contest arrived in the 44th minute when Eamonn Fitzmaurice’s troops scored their second goal after two unforced errors from the men in maroon and white left Paul Geaney free, and he gave Stephen Gallagher no chance from 12 metres.

Points followed from Geaney (free), O’Donoghue and Geaney (another free) to put the men in green and gold two goals clear (2-10 to 0-10). The introduction of Anthony Maher helped Kerry to dominate the midfield exchanges and the issue was never in doubt during the final quarter. Indeed, it took a great block from Kieran Gavin on Geaney to prevent a third Kerry goal late on, with David Moran replicating the by now-substituted Sheehan’s heroics from the resultant ‘45’.
Scorers for Kerry: P Geaney 1-4 (0-2f); J O’Donoghue 0-5 (3f); K O’Leary 1-0; B Sheehan 0-2 (2 ‘45’); P Crowley, S O’Brien, D Moran (‘45’), D Walsh 0-1 each.

AHL Division 1 Quarter-Final – Galway 1-20 Limerick 1-12

Galway defeated Limerick by 1-20 to 1-12 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Quarter-Final on Sunday March 30th at the Gaelic Grounds Limerick.

Impressive Galway cruise past Limerick

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Galway powered past Limerick to seal an Allianz Hurling League semi-final slot against Kilkenny in three weeks time. The gulf between Divisions IA and IB looked cavernous as Anthony Cunningham’s side out hurled and out muscled Limerick at the Gaelic Grounds.

A first-half penalty from Conor Cooney helped Galway on their way as they dampened a sprightly start from the home side who led by 0-5 to 0-2 after nine minutes. But once Galway plugged a few holes in their defence and denied James Ryan the room to run at them, they finished the half strongly as points from Cooney, the excellent Jonathan Glynn and David Burke gave them a 1-8 to 0-8 interval advantage.

It was more of the same after the break as Cooney, Niall Burke and Padraig Brehony all found the target as Galway opened out their lead to six points by the 40th minute.Graeme Mulcahy pegged them back somewhat with a fine point, but there was no stopping Galway, as Cooney, David Burke and Glynn all contributed handsomely.

Joe Canning made his return to the maroon shirt with 17 minutes remaining, but by the time of his introduction the result was beyond doubt.
Ryan rattled the net with an injury-time goal, but Limerick were outclassed and now face a long wait until they get their defence of the Munster championship underway against Tipperary on June 1.
Scorers for Galway: C Cooney 1-9 (1-0 pen, 5f, 4’65), J Glynn 0-2, David Burke 0-3, P Brehony 0-2, C Mannion, N Healy, N Burke, D Hayes 0-1 each

Cork advance to semis with Tyrone draw

Report from the GAA.ie web site

Cork secured a spot in the semi-finals of the Allianz Football League Division I despite being held by Tyrone at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday. Trailing by 0-12 to 1-5 at half-time, the home side upped their game considerably in the second period, with a goal by sub Colm O’Neill helping to turn matters in their favour. Three late points from Seán Cavanagh, Kyle Coney and Ronan O’Neill earned the visitors a point, however.

Despite the victory, for long periods Cork found themselves under pressure, especially in the first half when a Coney-inspired Tyrone looked imperious. Coney would kick six points in the opening 35 minutes, with Darren McCurry also impressing for them as the Cork full-back line struggled to deal with quick ball in. At the other end, Brian Hurley was the brightest light for Cork, for whom Paul Kerrigan had scored a fifth-minute goal to cancel out three Tyrone points in as many minutes from the throw-in.

While Cork suffered injuries to corner-backs Eoin Cadogan and Noel Galvin in the second half, they managed to get on top and O’Neill kicked two good points from frees as well as his 52nd-minute goal from Andrew O’Sullivan’s pass. That made it 2-10 to 0-13 for Brian Cuthbert’s side, and they looked to have secured the points when they were 2-14 to 0-17 ahead with four minutes left. Tyrone had other ideas, though.
Scorers for Cork: B Hurley 0-5 (0-2 frees), C O’Neill 1-2 (0-2 frees), P Kerrigan 1-0, J Hayes, J O’Rourke 0-2 each, M Shields, C O’Driscoll, Barry O’Driscoll 0-1 each.

Noel Galvin (Ballincollig)
Tomás Clancy (Fermoy)
Michael Shields (St. Finbarr’s – Captain)

Brian Cuthbert has made eight changes in personnel and a number of positional switches following the loss to Mayo on March 16th. David Hanrahan, last year’s U21 goalkeeper, makes his senior début, while Noel Galvin replaces Kevin Crowley at corner back. Eoin Cadogan moves to the other corner, with Tom Clancy filling the full back berth. Tomás Clancy moves back to wing back in place of Conor Dorman, while James Loughrey returns to the side, replacing Alan Cronin on the other wing, and Michael Shields moves to centre back. Allianz Football League Division 4 – Tipperary 5-16 Leitrim 0-16

Tipperary defeated Leitrim by 5-16 to 0-16 in round 6 of the Allianz Football League Division 4 on Sunday March 30th at Pairc Sean Mac Diarmada.

Sweeney fires Tipp to higher ground

Report from the Irish Independent newspaper

Tipperary destroyed Leitrim with a five-goal blitz and secured promotion to Division 3 in an entertaining game at Carrick-on-Shannon. Brian Fox had the ball in the Leitrim net within 12 seconds, serving notice of their intentions and they followed up with two points by Conor Sweeney before Emlyn Mulligan got Leitrim on the scoresheet. Two further Leitrim points by Darren Sweeney and Mulligan reduced the arrears but a superb Tipperary goal by Sweeney in the 14th minute put the visitors ahead 2-3 to 0-3. Leitrim reduced the arrears to three points in added time in the first half when Philip Austin finished to the net following a defensive mix-up to widen the gap to 3-8 to 0-10 at the break.

A Darren Sweeney point from play six minutes into the second half looked like the start of a Leitrim revival but it was Tipperary who once more reasserted their dominance with a Quinlivan pointed free followed by Tipp’s fourth goal by Ian Fahy in the 44th minute. The hosts struggled to get back into the game but the dismissal of Robbie Lowe for a second yellow card in the 53rd minute, followed by Tipp’s fifth goal through Conor Sweeney six minutes later, finally killed off the Leitrim challenge.

AHL Division 1 Quarter-Final – Clare 2-23 Laois 2-19

Clare defeated Laois by 2-23 to 2-19 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1 Quarter-Final on Sunday March 30th at Portlaoise.

Clare through despite brilliant Laois effort

Report from the GAA.ie web site

It was far from straightforward against a heroic Laois but Clare survived the potential banana skin to book their place in the Allianz Hurling League Division I semi-finals. Laois lost Tom Delaney to a straight red card in the 22nd minute and fell eight points behind at one stage in the second half, but dug deep to cut that to two when Brendan Redding goaled in the 69th minute. In the end, the Bannermen’s experience showed as they responded immediately with a brilliant Tony Kelly point from wide on the left, before Colin Ryan brought his tally to 10 points with a free.

A seventh minute goal from Neil Foyle after tremendous work by Tommy Fitzgerald gave Laois the perfect start but they were conceding too many frees and with Ryan helping himself to six points, trailed by 0-9 to 1-3 by the 19th minute. Laois had plenty of possession however and only poor shooting – they had 11 wides by half time – prevented them from being ahead.

Paddy Purcell and Matthew Whelan (free) kept them in touch though before Delaney received his marching orders for an off-the-ball incident involving John Conlon. The Laois defender appeared aggrieved by the decision but Alan Kelly was very definite. Stephen Maher was retained in the sweeper role despite the numerical disadvantage and Laois showed their resolve by hitting the front via a monster point from Charlie Dwyer and a Whelan 65.

Conlon and Conor McGrath made it a two-point game once more but back came Laois with a 60m point from corner-back Brian Stapleton and the score of the day from Purcell. McGrath had Clare in front entering injury time when Patrick Kelly made a good save from Fitzgerald. Seconds later, O’Donnell had the ball in the Laois net, after receiving a pass from McGrath and it was 1-12 to 1-9 at half time.

When O’Donnell converted another opportunity created by McGrath in the 45th minute the margin was seven and Ryan made it eight. But this time, it was Clare conceding frees and Maher punished them. Willie Hyland had an inspirational score before the brilliant Purcell set up Reddin to beat Patrick Kelly. Clare’s experience shone through though and while Laois will take plenty from the outing, it is Davy Fitzgerald’s crew that advance.

AHL Division 1A Relegation Playoff – Dublin 4-13 Waterford 1-17

Dublin defeated Waterford by 4-13 to 1-17 in the Allianz Hurling League Division 1A Relegation Play-Off on Sunday March 30th at Walsh Park Waterford.

Goals vital as Dublin relegate Waterford to IB

Report from the GAA.ie web site

A Danny Sutcliffe double alongside Paul Ryan and Colm Cronin goals helped Dublin towards the safety net of Division IA hurling for 2015 against fourteen man Waterford at Walsh Park. Shane O’Sullivan was dismissed on a straight red card after 28 minutes and that helped Dublin recover from a shaky start.

After trailing by five points at one stage, they led by 2-6 to 1-8 at half time. Sutcliffe’s quick fire strikes early in the second half put clear water between the teams. An injury hit Waterford battled with Shane Fives and Pauric Mahony carrying the fight to the finish. Mahony raised ten white flags.

Waterford blasted the first five points as they burst out of the traps. Ray Barry and Brian O’Sullivan scored within the opening minute, and Pauric Mahony tagged on three more (two from frees) to put them five up after merely seven minutes of action. Against the grain, Danny Sutcliffe earned a 21 metre free on ten minutes which Paul Ryan buried to the ceiling of the net. McCrabbe narrowed to one from a free before Mahony and McCrabbe swapped frees (0-6 to 1-2). Stephen Molumphy was forced off through injury but his replacement Darragh Fives made an immediate impression on 21 minutes.

He collected a pass from Seamus Prendergast on the left wing to smash low past Gary Maguire (1-6 to 1-3). Mahony extended the lead to four before disaster struck for the Déise in similar fashion to three weeks previous. Shane O’Sullivan received a straight dismissal with eight minutes remaining after connecting high on Michael Carton. The Dubs cashed in as McCrabbe converted a free before Colm Cronin gathered a pass from Mark Schutte to place a bullet to the corner beyond the dive of Ian O’Regan. Mahony nudged the hosts back in front with his fourth free but Mark Schutte and Ryan O’Dwyer sent Dublin into the lead for the first time at the break by the bare minimum.

Mahony levelled for the third time on the restart. Sutcliffe then struck two goals in the space of two minutes. Paul Ryan teed up the first on 42 minutes and two minutes later he fielded a Michael Carton delivery to rustle the top corner. Seven points to the good, Dublin relaxed slightly and allowed Pauric Mahony land a booming score followed by another from substitute Shane Walsh.

Shane Fives performed a splendid man marking job on Conal Keaney and Dublin went ten minutes without a score but Conor McCormack, Paul Ryan and Alan McCrabbe eased them out to eight. Waterford closed with consolation points from Ryan Donnelly with two and Mahony’s tenth of the afternoon.
