Allianz Football League Division I: Cork 0-16 Kildare 1-12

Cork made it two wins from two in the Allianz Football League Division I as they produced a strong third quarter to see off Kildare at Páirc Uí Rinn on Sunday.

Trailing by 0-8 to 0-7 at half-time after two Donncha O’Connor points had cut the gap from three to one, Cork roared into the second period and seized the lead for the first time since early in the game as the impressive John O’Rourke, Brian Hurley and Donal Óg Hodnett all got points. Though Darroch Mulhall and Paddy Brophy were keeping Kildare in touch, Cork’s increase in tempo was too much to deal with and had Daniel Goulding kept his shot under, rather than over, the bar in the 49th minute, Cork could have been out of sight.

As it was, further points from Mark Collins and Cathal Vaughan moved Cork four points clear, meaning that Cathal McNally’s injury-time goal for Kildare was just a consolation. Despite Cork getting the game’s first two points from O’Rourke and Mark Collins, they found themselves under pressure as Kildare got on top in midfield and Mulhall, McNally and Seán Hurley all kicked good points for the visitors.

Cork were wasteful with three goal chances as James Loughrey, O’Rourke and O’Connor all failed to beat Mark Donnellan. In contrast, Kildare were motoring well and McNally helped them to move 0-8 to 0-5 clear in the 29th minute. That would be as good as it would get for them, however, as Cork effected a fine turnaround.

Tom Clancy moves to full back, and there are first senior starts for U21s Brian O’Driscoll and Conor Dorman, while Fintan Goold moves to centre back. Eoin Cadogan and Aidan Walsh are with the hurlers for the first time for the next two weeks, after which they will return to the football panel ahead of the game against Dublin on March 1st, and Ruairi Deane comes in at mid-field. Joining the forwards are Donncha O’Connor and John O’Rourke, while Paul Kerrigan is named in the substitutes.

There’s good news for all Cork football fans as Colm O’Neill rejoins the panel, having recovered from a cruciate injury. Patrick Kelly, Jamie O Sullivan and Damien Cahalane continue to make excellent progress with physio Colin Lane and are on schedule with predicted return-to-play targets.

In the absence of Michael Shields, James Loughrey will captain the team.
