Courageous Carlow deliver for Rainbow

By Jackie Cahill for the Irish Examiner newspaper

Tipperary 0-16 Carlow 1-14

Anthony Rainbow’s Carlow survived a couple of real hammer blows to get off to a winning start in Division 4 of the Allianz National Football League at Semple Stadium yesterday. Carlow corner-forward Daniel St Ledger was stretchered off with a serious injury in the first-half and the Barrowsiders lost wing back Kieran Nolan to a second yellow card midway through the second half. But the 14 men, with the aid of a second half breeze, held firm and emerged one-point winners. With Brian Fox, Alan Maloney and Barry Grogan in good scoring form, Tipp were six points clear approaching the break, in front of an official attendance of 474. But Carlow struck for a crucial goal from Paul Reid on the stroke of half-time and when Willie Minchin added a point, Rainbow’s men trailed by 1-6 to 0-11 at the midway point.

Carlow defeated Tipperary by 1-14 to 0-16 in the Allianz Football League Division 4 Round 1 on Sunday at Semple Stadium Thurles.

Round-up from the GAA.ie web site

New Carlow boss Anthony Rainbow saw his side get off to a fine start in Division IV with a superb victory over Tipperary in Thurles on Sunday. For long stages it looked as if Peter Creedon’s side would prevail, and they led 0-8 to 0-4 after 25 minutes, with Carlow’s task made harder when forward Daniel St Ledger was forced off through injury.

However, Paul Reid’s goal before the break brought Carlow right into it and despite having Kieran Nolan sent off in the second half, they began to get on top. Carlow finally got into the lead towards the closing stages and despite Tipperary levelling twice, Rainbow’s side did just enough to secure the win.
