County Intermediate Hurling Final

The County Intermediate hurling final will be an all North Division affair with Ballina taking on Silvermines at 1.15pm at Semple Stadium next Sunday, October 14. The referee will be Paddy Ivors of Ballingarry. Silvermines defeated St, Mary’s Clonmel by 5 19 to 0-15 and Ballina defeated Sean Treacy’s by 1-19 to 1-10 in the semi-finals on Saturday last. Silvermines are seeking their second county title at this grade, having previously won in 1999 while Ballina are seeking their fist title. The winners will take on the Clare representatives, Ruan, at a Clare venue in the Munster club intermediate hurling championship on Sunday October 28.

Silvermines have won 7 North Intermediate Hurling titles since 1987 but have only gone on to win the County Intermediate Hurling title on one of those occasions, in 1999. Ballina have never won a North or County Intermediate title but did capture the County Junior A Hurling title in 1984 and 1996.
Previous County SH Final meetings – Thurles Sarsfields v Drom & Inch
This will be the third meeting between the clubs in the County Senior Hurling Final. In 2005, Thurles Sarsfields put behind them a run of 6 County Senior Hurling Final defeats since their 1974 success to defeat Drom & Inch on a scoreline of 1-17 to 0-15. Sarsfields lost the 2008 County SH Final to Toomevara before returning to the 2009 final where Drom & Inch yet again lay in wait. In a disappointing final, Thurles won by 0-14 to 0-5.
2009 County Senior Hurling Final – Thurles Sarsfields 0-14 Drom & Inch 0-5
Thurles Sarsfields raced in to a 0-5 to 0-0 lead after 11 minutes and by half-time, led by 0-9 to 0-3 at half-time. With Seamus Callanan being tightly marked by 20 year old Michael Cahill, Drom’s scoring threat was nullified and Thurles could have won this game by more if not for 12 wides. By the finish, Thurles were worthy champions by a 9 point winning margin.
