Carey the Star as Tipp March to Fourth Final in Succession

Published Date: 19 March 2010

Senior star, Sean Carey, turned in a man of the match display as Tipperary powered past Limerick at Semple Stadium, last evening (Thursday), to reach the Munster under 21 football final for the fourth year in a row. Carey was on top of his game, kicking seven points, six from play, as Tipperary called the shots all the way but a dogged Limerick, helped by a goal in each half, always kept them in sight. Tipperary stamped their authority on the game from the stary. With Carey settling them with three early points, they went on to lead 0-8 to 0-3 after 26 minutes. Limerick got a lifeline when David Ward netted in the 28th minute but Carey had his fourth point to leave Tipperary ahead 0-9 to 1-3 at the break.

With the fresh breeze in their favour, Tipperary opened a five points lead after twelve minutes of the second half, but once more Limerick rattled them with a John Riordan goal in the 44th minute. Seamus O Carroll pointed to cut the lead to a point, but Tipperary showed their superior with four points in the closing twelve minutes for a deserved win. Carey was the star of the show for Tipperary but Ciaran McDonald, Alan Moloney, John Coghlan, Bernard O Brien and Conor Sweeney were also very influential. Limerick’s best were Eoin Fitzgibbon, Eoin Joy, John Riordan, Eoghan O Connor and Bobby O Brien.

Carey shows his class to steer Tipp through

Tipperary 0-16 Limerick 2-5

Friday March 19 2010

TIPPERARY booked their place in a fourth successive final with a five-point victory against Limerick at Semple Stadium last night. The Premier County will meet Kerry or Waterford in the final on Saturday week, March 27, still in search of a very first provincial crown at this grade. Former All-Ireland minor hurling medallist Sean Carey, a current senior footballer with the county, was the star of the show with seven points, including six from play. In front of just 200 spectators, Tipp played against the breeze in the opening half and were 0-8 to 0-3 ahead before David Ward’s fisted goal at the Town End rekindled the Limerick challenge in the 29th minute.

Carey hit back with a point to hand Tipp a 0-9 to 1-3 half-time advantage and 13 minutes after the restart, the home side were well in command, leading by 0-12 to 1-4. The visitors looked a spent force but then wing-back John Riordan netted a 44th-minute goal. Seamus O’Carroll’s fisted score a minute later brought Limerick to within a single point but that was the last time the Treaty men raised a flag as a run of four unanswered points secured the win for Tipp.

Scorers — Tipperary: S Carey 0-7 (0-1f), B O’Brien, C Sweeney (0-1f) 0-3 each, P Acheson 0-2, G Ryan 0-1. Limerick: E O’Connor 0-4 (0-3f), J Riordan, D Ward 1-0 each, S O’Carroll 0-1.
